When Centro finally opened its doors to admit the Creations lined up outside, they saw a restaurant transformed for the occasion. Members of the night’s security team were lined up outside in their dark uniforms and masks, checking tickets and verifying names against the lists that they held on clipboards before admitting anyone through the front doors. Persons attempting to enter without a costume were turned away without apology. Once inside, patrons were directed to several large trunks that overflowed with elaborate hats, masks, and other concealing accoutrements of all styles and colors. Whether dressed as a princess, a vampire, or something far more obscure, an appropriate addition to their disguise was not hard to find. The Mad Hatter was tapped by Centro to make the disguise accessories for the masquerade. He imbued these items with his ability while he was constructing them - thus, they have a variety of unusual effects on the wearer. Not only do they lower the inhibitions of the person wearing them, they also render them totally anonymous even to those who know them well, and make the worries of the outside world seem distant and unimportant. The revelers were then greeted by a silver-haired pixie in her matching mask who handed them tickets in exchange for their outerwear, which was hung up in the Champagne room: the space was now a coat-and-bag check area closely guarded by a Creation with the ability to detect thievery. The Main Dining Room was cleared of all tables save for a row along each of the outer walls. Patrons were free to seat themselves here or along the main bar if they wished to be served by the waitstaff (all Creations, hired from a private company along with the catering staff so that Centro’s regular employees were able to enjoy the party free of their duties), or else take advantage of the costumed servers who circled the room with trays of beverages and hors d'oeuvres. The overhead lights were dimmed and the center of the dining room was converted into a darkened dance floor, illuminated only by the purple and orange strobes that lit up the support columns. Music originating from a hidden DJ booth reverberated through innumerable speakers throughout the first floor. Downstairs was found to have a distinctly different flavor. The Lower Lounge had been turned into an altogether more intimate affair, with well-known local musical acts performing at the piano while the waitstaff distributed glasses of Centro’s best wines and champagnes. The Mezzanine was now a smaller lounge, made cozy and inviting with comfortable furniture and curtains of heavy fabric that could be strategically draped for partial or complete privacy. The Cantina was emptied of all tables and played host to an art installation put together by one of Centro’s best patrons, a darling of the contemporary art world who brought in most of the donations that had funded the party. The installation projected clips of vintage horror films on soft white curtains that covered the walls and set them to music, featuring mash-ups of classical pieces and mainstream pop acts. At the second bar located outside the Cantina, a more specialized Halloween-theme menu of food and drink featured cupcakes inspired by ravens and brains, chocolate-covered ghost pretzels, Halloween bark, pumpkin patch puffs, and varieties of candied apples. Also available were drinks like the pumpkin spiced rum lattes, the Bloodied Brain, and Devil’s Blood cocktails. Centro began to fill up as soon as the doors opened. Throughout the restaurant, the members of staff took a collective breath behind their masks. They each knew they were expected to do their part, however small, to make this year’s Masquerade a legendary event. After all, Halloween was serious business. |
