There were certain things that had to be done before bed. Not cleaning-things, not really. The housekeeper took care of those things – the turning down of fresh sheets for both girls, the doing of dishes, the putting away of whatever had been taken out of place last. For Allyson, there were more pleasant routines. She always made herself a last cup of something warm to drink. She always snuck a cookie or two onto a plate. She usually settled into comfortable pajamas and unpinned her curls.
Some nights, she just added bits to that routine. For instance, some nights she stirred together two cups of delicious hot cocoa. Some nights she snuck four cookies onto a plate. And some nights she draped a big blanket over her arm, balanced all the other things together, and carefully slipped out into the hallway with them. Peter was there, standing guard. Of course, he did not particularly need to guard the apartment. Bathos didn't strike Ally as dangerous. But having him there was rather delightful, and she hadn't complained in the least.
"Are you sure you don't want to come in and sit on the couch?" It wasn't the first time she'd asked, and she didn't truly expect the answer to change. That was why she'd come equipped with cocoa and chocolate-chip cookies. Settling all these things down took a moment or two and a little maneuvering, but she managed not to break all her cups and saucers. Soon enough, she was sliding down to sit against the wall and unfolding her warm blanket, half of it offered Peter's way.
"You were telling me about the mermaids," she reminded – a demand cleverly disguised as a gentle nudge to regale her with one of his stories. Peter always had the most delightful stories.
