Who: Winnie and Sam
What: Grocery shopping for their vigilantes
Where: The store
When: Backdated to the morning of the no good bad, BD <-- Before Deadpool.
Warnings: None

Cherrie's impromptu dinner of pie and milk had made Winnie realize that if food was going to happen in 602 Hamartia, a woman was going to have to take care of it. She'd done a few jobs since that night, jobs for actual pay, and she intended to put the money to good use - Nesquik and canned soups and ice cream. Well, she was going to do that after she went and bought the new wrench set she'd been eying at the parts store.

She'd woken up that morning, put her ear to Jack's door and verified he was inside and snoring slightly, which meant he was alive. She had already realized Jack, who was out all night, every night was probably involved in something dangerous. She'd even peeked into his room and seen the white paint, and that (combined with the scar and the strangely colored eye) had sent her looking around on the internet until she found what she was looking for. Of course, that didn't change a thing for Winnie. He still needed to eat; it just meant she'd need to pick up some Band-Aids while she was out.

With the wrench kit heavy and safe in the messenger bag she wore over her work coveralls (sea blue), she walked into the grocery store and headed straight for the Nesquik.

"You need you some better ones," Winnie said, and she grabbed some gauze and tape and antiseptic and dumped it in the basket. If she'd known it was a monetary concern, she would have told Sam she would pay herself. Jack didn't make her pay rent, and she still had enough money left after the wrench set to cover this and then some.

When Sam admitted she didn't know what had hurt her, Winnie tipped her head curiously to the side. "Did you not see whatever made them marks?" she asked, disbelieving. "Come on," she said a moment later, tugging Sam toward the register. "You're gonna tell me everything that happened."

Pride wouldn't let Sam admit otherwise. She chewed on her lip as Winnie kept loading up her basket. Alright. She could come back and return things. She'd have to get a gift card with the money back on it - that was how things worked at the grocery store - but it would work out, possibly. Rory was supposed to get her a new lightbulb after all.

"I was asleep," Sam explained. She bit back a sigh before following Winnie. "There's nothing to say-" She didn't even know her. Or whether she was a Creation or Human. Just her name.

But there clearly was no way of getting out of this. She unloaded everything - including Winnie's items put gently to the side - before pulling out her thin wallet. She managed to get out enough to pay for her items with a quarter left behind. Damn it. She needed more babysitting hours. She waited on the other side of the register for Winnie, frowning slightly. No manners would make Sam run for it - but she was unsure about trusting her.

Winnie handed her half of the money in smallish bills. "I got to get some too, but I can't afford it all if I don't need to. Mind if we split the boxes? I got someone at home's prone to trouble," she told her vaguely. She didn't wait for a response before grabbing the bag and looking over her shoulder at the blonde. "I live in Hamartia. You nearby?" she asked, because even the humans knew Hamartia was a building. The girl hadn't known about the Reavers, so she might be human, but then she might not. Winnie had given up trying to tell Creations from non-Creations right on moving, because it was a waste of time.

"So, you're sayin' you dreamed somethin' that could leave marks like that?"

After a brief moment of surprise, Sam accepted the money with a small smile. "Thanks." It reminded her she could use some of it on Rory - explain it away like that. She tucked the money into her wallet, slipping that into her back pocket of her jeans. Out the door and abreast with Winnie, Sam let her arms swing with the weight of the bag - finding a full amount of 'groceries' pleasant. When she was younger, she would have complained about it.

At the mention of Hamartia, her eyes darted sideways. Okay. Creation then. "I live there actually," she said casually. "Fifth floor. Are you new?" Sam wasn't sure she'd meet everyone yet, but she tried to meet as many people as possible who lived in the building. She couldn't let Winnie in her apartment though; Rory was sleeping. "Well, yes. But no. My mind is coming up with something to explain it. These things don't happen in your dreams." That was logic speaking. Sam liked dreams well enough regularly, but even she knew how they worked. "My subconscious comes up with something - I don't always remember-" Sometimes she blacked out in her dreams from the pain or she was too distracted to notice she'd been bruised or cut until morning. "But I woke up with the cuts after."

"I just moved into to 602 recent," she told Sam. "I live with a roommate, well, he's more like an older brother I care for," she nodded toward the bag of groceries then. "And he don't eat real good. He don't sleep real good either, come to think of it. His name's Jack." She paused and listened to Sam's explanation of the dreams and the injuries, and she thought on it a moment. "Maybe that's your ability, what you can do, makin' dreams real," she suggested. "Stranger things have come. I've met people can fly, and people can open doors into places not here and not home, dreamin' things to life wouldn't be so far stretched then."

That felt familiar but that was Sam's lie. Except most days she worried about both her and Rory eating. After all, she'd taken him in. "I don't think I met Jack," she said thoughtfully. And she'd met quite a few people. At the question though she shook her head. "No, that's not mine. I've already figured it out." She'd already told the world via screwing up on the forums - a demonstration for Winnie couldn't hurt.

With an overdramatic roll of her eyes Sam muttered a wish under her breath - too quiet to make out the exact words. Her grocery bags vanished with out a sound, just a shimmer of glitter. Sam brushed her hands before glancing to Winnie. "They'll be by the stairs. That's where things usually go and where I end up when I wish things." She rubbed her hands on her pants to get the rest of the glitter again.

Winnie looked mighty impressed at the glitter, and she looked up at Sam's face. "Wait, how's that work?" she asked. "You can just send things where you want with wishes, but they always end up goin' to the same place?" she asked. "What sort of wishin?'" She tipped her head to the side, a curious little bird in the morning sunlight. "Why not just wish yourself them bandages then? Or wish away whoever was hurtin' ya in your sleep?" The questions were a ramble, all fast and thoughts and no planning.

She put up a finger, because good faith confessions deserved good faith confessions in return. She nodded toward a junker of a car on the corner, one that had been there for months and wasn't going nowhere soon, and she concentrated on it. A visible swirl of unimpressive gray circled the car for just a moment, and then the engine rev'ed to life, sounding like a brand new motor.

"Not always. I have to say the right words or it screws up or doesn't work-" Sam glanced sideways, biting back a sheepish smile. "I think there's a limit on other things, but I can do most anything with myself. Except it all undos itself after a certain amount of time. I don't know how much, it seems to change." She was guessing it was around thirteen hours though; that was how long it lasted. "Later on, the bag will end up in my hand. It's just how it works. It's not permanent."

As for sleeping, Sam shrugged. "I don't know. I think I'm sleep walking. I used to do it when I was little. I thought goblins played with my toys while I was in bed, but it was in my dream....or that's what my dad said." Even if that didn't make sense now.

She fell silent though as Winnie put up a finger. She looked off to the car and her breath caught as it came to life. Utterly delighted - and understanding the motion entirely - Sam grinned at her. "That's amazing."

"Not as bein' able to make wishes!" Winnie insisted. "You're like a a genie that don't got a lamp to worry 'bout." It was true. She imagined all the things she'd wish for if she could - momma and daddy and for the Reavers never to have come, for Jack to get on well with the pretty blonde next door, for a 1965 Impala in cherry red to come through the station come morning.

"We should get you one of them webcams," she said finally, when she'd stopped dreaming and wishing on things. Her feet starting up again on the walk to Hamartia. "And leave it on while you're sleepin,' see if it happens again."Or, we can have us a a sleepover and figure out the same. I don't sleep so much lately, and I got the whole livin' room to myself. Jack, he's out nights."

"Except the time limit. Having a lamp might be only slightly better." And Genies didn't have their wishes screw up on them left and right. They were getting closer to the building now - just a block away.

She made a small sound, agreeing and again not. Webcams cost money and she wasn't sure she could wish one perfectly into shape. "Maybe," she said. Sam never wanted to sleep again and no matter how foolish that thought was, she was clinging to it. Even for an experiment, finding herself in the shadowman's clutches again...Sam shivered right then, with the sun actually out for once. "That'd be nice," she said with a hint of a smile. "I can't tonight though - I mean, if you were offering for then. I have to...study." Or follow Rory to a vigilante meeting.

"It ain't. Havin' a lamp means people can trap you proper, and make you go grantin' wishes for them," Winnie told Sam with as much solemnity as Winnie could ever manage. She walked a little longer in quiet, stopping in front of the building, the sound of the car engine far off in the distance. "We can do it whenever you've got a mind to. I work durin' the days, but I'm home most nights. You go on up and take care of them cuts, and I better get down to my shop. I'll get in touch tomorrow, and we can split up them bandages too?"

It did seem incredibly grave and Sam had to laugh. It felt good to do it - like she hadn't in a long while. "Alright. Maybe." She stopped when Winnie did, wiping her hands on her pants again. "Works for me." She stuck out a mostly-glitter-free hand again. "I'm S. Caulfield on the forums. And I'm in 505 if you need to drop by before." She could always hide Rory before - and he knew not to answer the door.

"Winnie Kay, in 602," she said, with a very grown up handshake and only the tiniest of bounces on the heels of her feet. "I'll get in touch. You keep the lights on when you're sleepin,' and you call me if anythin' happens that seems off."

Then, with a little nod and a smile, she turned away from the building and headed back to Cap.
