Who: Marie and Gwen
What: Caught in the hero act
Where: Some alley
When: Evening
Warnings: Violence?

Marie really, really didn't know why she was doing this. All she'd ever wanted was a normal, plain ordinary life; running around looking for muggings to stop was so not normal. The first time it had happened it really had been an accident. It had been almost a year since she'd gotten the prosthetic limbs, but the novelty of running and walking and jumping still hadn't worn off; so when she'd wanted to do a bit of exploring she thought going for a run might be a good way to see the sights. Marie had never expected to stumble across a mugging. She couldn't just pretend she didn't see it though and had quickly gone to help the woman. It had been easier to stop the mugger than she thought it would be. She supposed it helped when they weren't expecting much from a 5'3" blond and your left hook came from a metal arm. She'd been happy with herself for helping the woman, it had been the right thing to do after all, and that was the end of it.

Or at least it should have been.

After that it was like there was a itch just out of reach; she found herself making excuses to go for runs that always seemed to veer off into the bad parts of town. And when she'd inevitably find a mugging, or any number of things, well, she couldn't just leave could she? It was after the fourth time this happened that Marie had to admit to herself that maybe she was going looking for trouble. Marie didn't understand it, but she couldn't resist the pull either. Which was how she found herself in a powder blue hoodie, bike pants, and a pair of dark sunglasses getting ready to interrupt a mugging. Seriously, what was wrong with her?

It was later than she usually ran but it was still early in the night and Gwen just needed to get out. Things were hectic on all fronts, as Oracle, as Gwen, and even though a long jog was a temporary reprieve from things, it was still a reprieve and she’d take what she could get. She slipped on her running gear, pants and a matching tank top in black with yellow trim, and left her headphones. Home and through the park, she decided to take the long way back, unafraid of what the seedier neighborhoods might throw in her path. On the streets or on rooftops, if something was going on she’d stop it no matter what.

It was by chance that she heard it, one angry voice and one terrified one that made her veer to the side and change directions. She could see them in the alley and made her way, though she quickly spotted another figure who had the same idea. Dressed casually and petite in stature, Gwen wondered who she was and worried that she was in over her head. She pushed herself into a harder run. She was farther but maybe she could make it sooner to stop the mugging and stop that girl from hurting herself.

Marie was too focused on the situation at hand to notice the other runner swiftly approaching. 'Well', she thought, 'best to take his mind off the woman first.' "Hey!" she called out in what anyone else would have called a stupidly reckless gesture. "Get away from her!" The mugger was less than intimidated at being discovered by the short blond woman, her pony tail just peeking out of her hood. The alley lead to what was essentially a dead end so the man saw no problem with going after the annoying little good Samaritan first.

'Shit, knife!' Rather than try to dodge as he swung at her Marie quickly raised her left arm to block. The knife easily cut through her "skin", but rather than the yell of pain one might have expected there was only the screech of metal on metal. A few sparks flew from the open cut and Marie swore, realizing he must have just scraped a wire; she'd have to make sure it hadn't done any real damage later. The mugger stumbled back in surprise as the gash revealed a glimpse of silver white metal beneath the young woman's skin.

A very stupidly reckless move and Gwen gritted her teeth as she closed the distance between them. The too familiar arch of the man’s arm, the quick glint of a knife and Gwen’s gasp was caught in her throat. Toolatetoolatetoo— The knife scraped against something metal and it was so startling that she stopped in her tracks. Sparks were in her vision and she forced herself to focus on the hum that she felt beneath her skin.

In her rush, she thought she was feeling the usual technological pulse of the city, the weight bearing down on her as always. Now she realized much of the nearby energy was coming from the girl herself, and not in simple levels like a cellphone. "How..." She said aloud, a second after the man was scrambling back. Hearing Gwen made him turn to look at her. Suddenly he realized he had more witnesses than he started with and tried to make a break for it. "Shit," she muttered as she closed the last bit between them, not caring that the girl was still in arm's length to grab him. Gwen still didn't know what to make of her.

Marie whirled around as she heard another voice. Her heart was pounding from the rush of adrenaline that always came when she did this, and in her distraction it didn't even occur to her that she was revealing her torn arm. Oh this was all going to hell now wasn't it she thought with a groan. The part of her that wanted a normal life and thought this was a terrible, stupid idea and that she should learn to control her impulses pointed was crying out 'you see!' It was a rather childish inner voice.

Realizing the man was trying to get away she quickly swung out a leg, kicking him in the knee. Normally this kind of blow would have been annoying at best given their relative sizes and his desire to escape. Normally though people did not have legs made of metal.

The man gave out a startled yell that quickly bled into painful once fell to the ground. In those few beats, Gwen was right there beside them, and before he had a chance to lash out with the knife once more, her fist shot out and he slumped back to the ground in a daze. Now that was taken care of, though she still needed to call for a pick up, she turned back to the girl, her eyes falling on the torn “arm” for a moment.

Before she could say anything, the other woman’s voice rang out, still shaky and startled but thankful nonetheless. “It was all her doing,” she said, smiling back at the smaller blonde girl. Gwen quickly laid her hand over the cut, not grasping though her fingers tightened ever so slightly on contact. The immediate desire to close the opening in machinery, even if it was a futile effort, almost slipped from her grasp. There was just the barest hint of a push that the electronics would have sensed but then she caught herself. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to help the girl, but doing so without that kind of permission that just felt downright rude.

The woman kept thanking and made her way out the alley, and Gwen used her free hand to grab her cellphone and call in the mugging attempt, but she didn’t let the other girl go. “You should get that looked at,” she said. As the call began to wind down she pointed with her chin to the mugger who was still reeling on the ground, though he was starting to come around. “We need to secure him, or watch him, until the cops get here.” She didn’t exactly relish punching him or kicking him until he was out, but if she had to, she would. The blonde girl probably would do a better job of that, though

Any relief Marie felt at the sight of the downed mugger quickly fled as the other woman's arm closed over her torn exoskin. For a moment she thought she felt something from the arm, a pulse or a push, but quickly dismissed it. Her mother hadn't even attempted to put anything like a nervous system into the mechanical arm, she couldn't feel anything from it. It was probably just another phantom pain, she reasoned; she'd been having those for years.

Marie bit her lip, trying to calm herself down, convince herself that her arm hadn't been seen. It wasn't that she couldn't just admit to the prosthetic, lots of people had prosthetic limbs, but it wasn't something Marie liked to talk about ever. And what if she was asked how she controlled it? She didn't have any kind of remote or anything she could use to explain how it worked, not unless she wanted to go spilling the beans about Creations to some random stranger. Yeah, that, was a great plan. "Um, we could use my hood string?" she suggested lamely, somehow managing to keep her voice from shaking. Ok, cool, she was sort of better at this lying thing than she'd thought. "You any good at knots?"

It was then that Marie realized she was still wearing sunglasses, and it was getting kinda dark out. So she either looked suspicious, like a tool, or both. 'Greeeeat' she mentally moaned. And the worst part was that even after all this she knew she'd still be unable to resist the urge to run around doing this. There was something seriously wrong with her in the head she decided.

Gwen had a fair amount of practice but hid it behind a humble grin. “Been a while but I didn’t earn that badge in Girl Scout’s for nothing.” The hoodie strings were fine, better than what she had on her which was absolutely nothing. She nodded to the girl and took the string, though not before she handed the girl the cellphone. Though the call was winding down, she hadn’t hung up yet. Anything to keep the blonde occupied and there, not running off to hide.

“Did you know her?” she asked, stepping behind the man and pulling him back, trying to tie his hands behind his back. “The one who was being mugged.” She gave a particularly hard tug on the ties for emphasis.

Marie took the phone, trying her best to stealthily pull down the sleeve of her hoodie over the exposed metal. She listened with half an ear as the operator told her to stay on the line. The more time that passed the easier it was for Marie to convince herself that the other woman hadn't seen her arm after all. Marie figured she would have said something by now if she had, right?

"Oh um no, I just sort of saw what was happening, and thought I should help." she said. She wondered if she should take off her glasses. It wasn't like the other woman knew she'd been out looking for crime to stop. But still if she had seen her arm, well she was safer being thought of as a tool. "Guess you had a similar idea?"

"Yeah," she nodded though she kept her eyes down and on her work. Tying up the would be mugger was proving difficult since he was struggling, and now that he was coming to, he wasn't quiet. Screaming to let them go, of what he would do to them when he was free, made her roll her eyes. When he pulled on the ties again and tried to head butt her, she punched him hard, knocking him out and pulling back her hand with a painful wince.

"We get a lot of that around Seattle. People wanting to help. Wanting to make a difference." She looked over at the girl and then around them. Other than the mugger, there wasn't a soul in sight. "Though they don't usually have hardware like yours." She nodded her head to the girl's arm.

She shifted nervously, her wording made Marie feel uncomfortably exposed. Was it that obvious she'd been looking for someone to help? She really hoped not, it would kind of mess up her intentions of keeping this all on the down low. "Hey well, um who wouldn't want to do the right thing." she said laughing nervously.

Marie grabbed her arm instinctively when the woman nodded at it, her fears realized. "I, um." she glanced around nervously making sure no one else was around. "Its a prosthetic." she finally said quietly, hoping that the uncomfortable pause that came when people found out she was 'disabled' would keep the woman from asking how it actually worked.

“You’d be surprised,” Gwen murmured in the face the one woman’s laugh. It was natural instinct to protect one’s own skin. To override that drive, to protect someone else rather than yourself, wasn’t always easy or as common as they would all like to hope.

Once she saw how fearful the girl, at least in regards to her arm, Gwen took a step back and smile, the very picture of apologetic. She hadn’t meant to scare her and if anything, she wanted to help. But she knew that she was a stranger, and her power was more than a little invasive for the blonde woman, so she pulled back. “It’s a very impressive prosthetic. Nothing I’ve ever felt—seen before.” Her smile pulled up again tightly, her slip up obvious, her word choice intentional. Just to see.

"Ah yeah, it's not exactly a common model." she said with a weak grin. That sounded better than 'my mom made it' didn't it? Distracted though she was it was impossible for Marie to miss the slip up. Despite her own hope not to be poked and prodded at with questions it was impossible for her to hold back her own curiosity. "Felt?" What could she possibly mean by that? For a moment her mind wandered back to the strange twinge she'd dismissed earlier as a phantom pain (even if they had become less common since she'd gotten the prosthetics) but she dismissed it. That didn't make any sense, how could that possibly have been her?

. . .unless she was a Creation too. The thought sparked some hope in Marie. She would still prefer to keep quiet about her legs, but at least she wouldn't be the one to let the cat out of the bag because she had no possible way of controlling her arm without her ability. Tired of not being able to see in the waning light Marie pushed her glasses up onto the top of her head. Without the glasses it was easy to see the hope in Marie's eyes. If she was a Creation than this situation wasn't quite as bad as Marie had thought it was.

"Yeah. Funny thing, that," she said with a small smile once she the girl noticed her slip up. And though it was an odd thing to say, when Gwen looked over at her, it wasn't fear or shock or even worry or disbelief that she saw on the blonde's face. It was hope.

Gwen could handle hope.

Without the glasses, she could get a clear view of the woman's face and with that bit of faith, she extended a hand out for a shake. "Gwen." A noise in the distance caught her attention, and she spared a moment to look toward the incoming sound of sirens before turning back to the girl. "Which of the three buildings do you live in?" If her subtle admission to an odd power didn't seal the deal, her knowledge of the three Creation residences should have. She inclined her head back toward the streets, so the girl could pick an apartment building, and therefore at least a direction to flee in.

She felt a smile tug at her lips as she shook the other woman's hand. "I'm Marie." She felt her smile grow wider at the other woman's question. So she was a Creation! Well okay that wasn't so bad then. Half the reason she was so determined to hide her limbs was the fact that she couldn't explain how they worked without her ability. That wasn't to say she had any intention of running around her apartment building without her exoskin (she didn't want to be stared at like some kind of circus freak or whatever) but at least it wasn't a total melt down freak out type moment.

"I'm in Bathos." she admitted.

Bathos. Well at least that was where she lived. “Come on,” Gwen said, a gentle nudge on her other arm down to the direction of the building. “The police will be here any minute now and unless you want to explain what happened, we should get out of sight.” She cast one last glance at the mugger, glad that he was out before he could give their faces one last look, and then she smiling back at Marie as they walked the short distance home. “How long have you been in Seattle?” Easy questions first, before she went to the heavy stuff, like where she got the hardware.

Yeah she would definitely like to avoid questions from the police. Questions tended to lead to insistence that she go visit a hospital, or something to get herself checked over. She didn't think she was lucky enough to run into two Creations tonight, and wasn't willing to test the theory. Trotting along beside her Marie considered the question. "Well I've been in the city for like a month maybe? But, um, I moved" she put extra emphasis on the word, assuming Gwen would be able to figure out she meant crossed over. "when I was fifteen." She tilted her head a bit looking over at Gwen. "What about you?"

"Just a few years," Gwen replied easily. Thankfully she didn't need to explain any of the hows or whys that were associated with her move. Though it might have helped to explain that she had been once paralyzed, if only to further some connection, the story was just too long and complicated to explain. "Did this..." she cast a quick glance to Marie's arm, "happen before or after the move?"

Marie bit her lip, wondering just how much she should tell Gwen. She already knew about her arm, and Marie supposed in for a penny in for a pound right? Her legs she'd be keeping quiet about though, at least for now. "The replacement came after the move." she said awkwardly. "But, well," she swallowed hard. "I was six when I. . . There was a car accident." She closed her eyes tightly for a moment, trying to push back the memories.

She'd been so young then, and the memory had blurred around the edges over the years. Dad had been trying to make her laugh, singing some ridiculous song completely off key. She thought she might have been pouting over not getting some sugary cereal she'd wanted. Marie hoped she hadn't been, she didn't want to have been mad at him the last time she saw him. After that everything was a blur; it was nothing but pain, and bright lights, unfamiliar voices all around her. She remembered the hospital clearly; waking up and realizing her legs and arm were gone had been like something out of a nightmare. Sometimes she still wondered if she was going to wake up soon.
