Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:red riding hood, starfire

Who: Katya and Scarlette (and Fenris too!)
What: Comfort of the best friend variety
When: Just as soon as Kat comes down from the roof
Where: Their apartment
Warnings: None!

How she made it to the apartment held together, Katya wasn't sure. As soon as the door to their apartment door shut behind her, the tears started to form in the corners of her eyes. There was so much good in Roger, so much potential, and he was trying to shut part of himself away. A part of himself that Katya loved very much. Worry and concern, and an overall feeling of helplessness and of being unwanted washed over her. This wasn't how things were supposed to play out. How could it be?

She made her way into the bedroom she shared with Scarlette, planning to merely go to bed and do her best to not disturb her friend. The moment she locked eyes with the other redhead, however, the tears came falling down. Katya made a beeline for Scarlette's side of the room and held out her arms, silently asking for a hug that she desperately needed.

Scarlette had overheard half of the comm discussion and was a bit shocked about how many of them had comms yet the one guy said there was no 'we'. That sounded like a 'we' to her. Laying on her bed, Scarlette stared out the window with Fenris at the small mob of reporters hounding the building. "Reporters are the plague of the planet," she explained to Fenris who just saw them as a threat and wanted to do something about it.

The sound of the door slamming shut made Scarlette turn away from the window. Katya had finally returned. Scarlette had respected her need to be alone; she knew the feeling well and would only expect it from her friend should she need it. Still she waited quietly on the bed to see if Katya was ready to talk or if she would need more time for herself. As soon as their eyes met, Scarlette could see that there was more pain in Katyua's eyes than she had left with. Welcoming Katya's hug, Scarlette wrapped her arms around her friend and stroked her hair like she would an animal.

"What happened?" She asked after a moment.

She wrapped her arms tightly around her friend and cried quietly for a few moments. "Everything is such a mess," she replied, voice broken by the quiet sobs that wracked her body. "They fight, all the time. If you aren't one of theirs, then you're nothing. Unwelcomed. You can't have a voice with them! And he...he's going to lose himself in everything. And I can't stop him. I don't know what to do," she sobbed, a fresh wave of tears falling when she spoke about Roger. She was so afraid of losing him.

Scarlette shook her head. Crying + Russian + talking vaguely didn't equate to much n Scarlette's mind. It took her a moment to decipher what was said, as her Russian was rusty after so many years. "Dear, dear... It'll be ok. Who's going to lose himself? The Bat guy?" She was confused as Katya had refused to tell her much on the subject of Roger.

"And if they felt you were unwelcome then they wouldn't have sent you one of those radio things to talk with them." She continued to pet Katya's curls to calm her down. She wished she could understand humans as well as she could animals. The wolves told it like it was and as much as Scarlette was well aware that dogs did in fact lie, they were much more open about everything than a human was.

Fenris jumped down from his spot on the bed and pawed at Katya's leg. He was too small to join in on the hug. He may not have understood most human-speak but he knew when they were sad.

Katya shook her head and wiped away some of her tears. "No, the Bat is what he, Nightwing, will become if he is not careful," she replied, shuddering only lightly as she tried to stop crying to explain. "Nightwing was a big part of why I started to do what I do as Starfire. The masks and the secrets, I do not always understand it. The people I care for can protect themselves. You and Fenris, I know you can take care of yourselves, survive. Same with him. I do not wear a mask. Anyone who sees me clearly as bot Starfire and Katya will know who I am, and I do not hide it." She paused then, and considered the article and her conversation with Job.

"They do not have balance, and they do not trust. I trust them, because I know I am human and they must be too if we all attempt to do the same things. I do not know who any of them are, save Nightwing. I do not need to know. They are human to me. Real. We are not real to them," she said, gesturing to outside where the Media was circling. "They continue to stand by and watch as their world falls to ruin, because they know they can count on Masks to save them. They do not need us, Red. It is good because there is no 'us' to be needed," she added, the last part coming out bitterly.

Scarlette tilted her head still confused. "Why is this Nightwing important? And I'm sure that the boys can play just as hard as us and survive. Maybe..." She paused. She didn't know exactly what to say. Pushing back from the hug, she ran her hand done the side of Katya's face. Scarlette felt like a terrible person next to her friend. She didn't have as much faith in the world, but maybe that was because of the fear she felt that she would never admit to.

"Katya, you trust so easily. Them," She points out the window. "They are idiots if they believe we're anything but real or human. Our world is the same as theirs really. They're just all too afraid to let good happen to them. Maybe they're not use to people wanting to take things into their own hands. They do need us or else we wouldn't have to do what we do." Her voice was calmer than usual, but that burning passion over events still sat heavy in her eyes.

"He is very dear to me," she admitted quietly. "I...have always had feelings for him, since I met him in New York. He is...mesmerizing, Scarlette. There is something about him, it draws me to him," Katya explained, as she smiled and leaned into her friend's touch. She had always been optimistic, and always chose to believe in the good of people. Her view of the world was optimistic, as was her view of the people that filled it.

"It is harder to relate when we are hidden behind a mask," she countered softly, taking Scarlette's hands in her own. Her tears had dried in streaks down her cheeks, and her eyes were rimmed red, but she recognized that burning passion within her best friend. "They need the masks now, because they cannot save themselves. If they cannot be able to save themselves, then I am fighting for nothing."

"The masks are to protect us from harm in our normal lives though. Everyone wears masks figuratively. Or so some movie said. They just need the courage to save themselves, and that's what you're fighting for." Scarlette tightened the grip of her hand around Katya's.

"And if he is dear to you then he will never be like the Bat because he has you, and no one with you in their lives could become cold to the world like the newspapers say the Bat is. And if you've known him since Musings, then you're even more connected."

"Can they have that courage without knowing us?" she asked softly, dropping her gaze to their hands connected between them. Katya was always very personable and did her best to be as friendly as possible to everyone she met. She glanced up at Scarlette with a hopeless look on her face.

"He is too stubborn. He must try, and as much as I hate myself for it, I hope he does not succeed. I just hope he realizes that he is not alone soon." Kat sighed and shrugged. "Things are complicated with them. I feel as though we should be a team, but what else can I do? It is obvious they do not want or need me around."

"Life would be boring if they didn't need us at some point." She smirked. "Well, we can show them that teams work. It will be you and me and Fenris." Fenris howled in response. "Then it can also show Nightwing that he doesn't need to be alone either."

Looking at their hands, Scarlette smiled again and pulled her out into the hall. "Come on, let's have a drink and then play dress up with our costumes... you have something you wear that separates you as Starfire right? If not I think we should take this time and go through our closet." They couldn't go out because of the mob, but they could act like they were 11. If she had a punching bag she would have suggested some sort of work-out. Or even go out to the woods for a late night run.

Katya grinned, warming up to the idea already. Yes, she and Scarlette could show them what it would be like to be work together. To trust someone implicitly. Granted, they had years of friendship behind it, but they would, at least, not turn away anyone if they wished to work with them.

"Life is never boring when we are together," Katya countered, letting Scarlette pull her out into the hall. "I have my costume, but no mask. My hair generally does a good job of hiding my features," she replied with a shrug, taking out the glasses while her friend picked out the drink of choice.

Scarlette held up a large bottle of Skyy Vodka and a smaller bottle of Orange Juice. "One or both?" She smirked. "Well with that mass of hair I have no doubt it hides your features if done right." She chuckled and set the bottles on the counter and grabbed a bag of chips from another cupboard.

"Come on, drinks first and then we'll do a random fashion show. Oh maybe we can creep some reporters out by hang from the building? Or I can get some of the strays to howl from different directions quietly until the reporters are freaked out and leave." Scarlette was more excited about the idea of messing with the reporters now than the dressing up portion.

She took the bottle of Vodka and smirked. "One, unless it has been that long since you have had the hard stuff," she teased, opening the bottle and taking a swing. At Scarlette's suggestion, she shook her head enthusiastically.

"No no, we cannot do anything to the media persons. The Bat," Kat shook her head a second time. "Let us have fun inside, my friend. And tomorrow, we will replenish your stocks with something stronger," she added, handing the bottle to her best friend.

Scarlette smiled. "Speaking of the disapproving populace of Masks. I met Arrow the other day. He seemed to know that this was going to happen." She practically danced over to Katya and grabbed the bottle for a swig of her own. "He's an amazing Archer, better than my father was. It's like his movements were so precise and at the peak of ability. I could only wish for something like that."

Scarlette was more than impressed with the Mask and wondered why it was The Bat all over the news instead of him. People didn't seem to appreciate the talent and work that went into those skills. Tucking her legs under her as she sat on the couch, she smiled. It was a brief meeting but something she'd liek to repeat again if she could get lessons.

Fenris waddled out of the room with Scarlette's red cloak wrapped around him and half in his mouth. It was a wonder that the thing didn't smell heavily of do.

Katya held the bottle away playfully before handing it over with a smile. She stuck her tongue out at the mention of Arrow and meeting him. "Why did you not tell me earlier? He is nicer than some of the others. When you are not challenging him, that is," she replied with a grin, taking the bottle back and taking a swig of her own. Sharing the bottle with Scarlette had never bothered her before, and it certainly wouldn't start to now.

"You are just as good! With the potential to be better. We will train you. I would offer to get you a communication device, but I am 'on the outs' as they say. Being associated with me will do nothing but bad things for you my friend," she replied, slightly bitter about the last part. She took another swig of the vodka before handing it to Scarlette.

Scarlette frowned for a moment, before wrapping her arm around Katya's shoulder. "I'd rather be friends with you than any number of broody bastards who wear masks to be able to express their broodiness." She took her swig of the vodka. There was no way it was going to last long.

"Let's just be you and me and start are own group. If they want to play with us then we let them, if they don't... well then it's their loss. Anyway... Arrow mentioned something about communication... I'll just throw up a private post to him and see if he answers." She smiled. "If nothing else I'd really like lessons by him." She looked down at the bottle before handing it off and grabbing her cloak to put it on. "He reminds me of my dad... and I started to do all of this because of him."

The night would be full of drinking, childish playing and lots of tears, but that's what made their friendship strong enough to just start again where it left off. Scarlette adored her like a sister she never had and would never let her be alone again. Neither of them would be.
