Op-Ed: Letter to the Editor Seattle's Masks are a controversial subject. Some hate them, some love them, and some just couldn't care less. I understand that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but gunning down a man in Starbucks is crossing a line that I hoped people had the decency to stay away from. Apparently I was wrong. First of all, there's no proof that Mr. Ames is the Bat, and even if there was that doesn't give anyone the right to do what Mr. Eels did. It was done out of revenge, plain and simple, which was misguided in and of itself. Mr. Eels' son wasn't wrongfully accused. He is not in any sense of the word a victim. He broke the law and was forced to face the consequences, which is called justice. We can't make excuses for criminals just because they're our children, siblings, spouses, or any other kind of close relation. Breaking the law is a choice that comes with repercussions. It's common sense, which seems to be something we're lacking these days. Even aside from that, the fact that some of us are killing Masks is downright sickening. Doesn't anyone realize that these are people who sacrifice themselves to protect us? They don't get paid, and they definitely don't receive even half of the gratitude they deserve, but they do it anyway. Yes, they work outside the law. Yes, some have questionable methods. The bottom line, however, is that these Masks don't have to risk their lives for strangers. They don't have to fight to keep the streets safe and put criminals behind bars. It's a choice that most of us would never have the selflessness or courage to make, but instead of being grateful we turn on them. We mock their efforts and even try to kill them, and I'm getting tired of it. One day there won't be any Masks left, and when that day comes we'll finally come to appreciate everything they've done for us. Unfortunately by then it will be too late, and we'll have no one to blame but ourselves for it. Signed, Sick and Tired. |
