It had been three whole days- three days since Coraline had woke up in a bedroom that was not her own. Spending the whole first day in bed, trying to wake herself up from what she thought was a terrible dream, Coraline soon discovered that she was, in fact awake. She couldn't have been in the otherworld either, (luckily no one had buttons for eyes.) By the second day, she'd thought that perhaps her parents had taken her somewhere while she slept in the middle of the night and that they were just out somewhere bringing back provisins. She was convinced they would be returning soon. In the meantime, she examined the apartment. She took out her pen and pad and recorded the number of windows as well as the number of doors. She even became so bored that she counted the number of visible floor boards of the wooden floor in her bedroom and the number of tiles in the bathroom.
The twelve year old girl was not really afraid, she'd encountered worse places- or rather places that seemed wonderful and were not at all. There was nothing particularly threatening about the apartment, nor the street outside. At night it was a bit gloomy but, all and all, Coraline had not left the building only because she didn't think she needed to. She didn't want to miss her parents if they returned. Now that three days had passed, however, Coraline was so hungry she would even eat one of her fathers nothing-but-condiments dinner. She looked out the window one last time, peering up and down the street and frowning.
Coraline sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve as she left the apartment building, not really sure where she was going but it didn't exactly take a super-sleuth to find a place to eat on a main street in London, Ontario. “London, Ontario” that’s what the phone book on the dresser had said. That was where she was. The weather was getting chilly, especially now that the sun had gone down. Coraline rubbed her arms with her hands to try and keep warm. She looked up at the glowing windows of the building that made her feel so short. All of the other kids her age were probably tucked in their beds or, if they were outside, they were probably walking hand in hand with their parents. She sighed, turned the street corner and walked into a small grocery store. It was a good thing that she had found her allowance in her messenger bag, otherwise she wouldn’t have had any money. Even still, there was only five dollars and who knew how long she would be in Ontario by herself. Perhaps she had to find another door to go through. Maybe she could ask a cat for directions.
Picking up a bag of chips, she supposed she could spare twenty five cents and deal with drinking the water of her apartment, even though she was hungry enough to eat a whole box of macaroni and cheese and two whole servings of ramen noodles. The little girl placed the money on the counter and showed the cashier her chips, wondering if someone was going to ask her for rent money. If so, who did she pay? How much was it? When did they collect and how in the world was she going to pay? Maybe her parents weren’t coming. There belongings were not anywhere in the apartment.
