[Rachel is pounding on the bathroom door, screaming at her to come out and that it's her turn. She has to pee and no amount of makeup will fix her ugly anyway. Matilda ignores the whining and inspects her face very carefully in the mirror. She reaches for the lipstick on the sink and paints her lips a deep purple before touching up her fake eyelashes with another coat of mascara.] "Oh, I love you baby." [She pouts to her reflection in her best Marilyn Monroe impersonation.] "Happy birthday, Mr. Conroy."
"MATILDA! Get out of the bathroom! I'm going to pee in your room. I swear, I will pee all over all of your big ugly--"
[She checks her hair one more time in the mirror and opens the bathroom door. Rachel shoves past her and slams the door behind her. Matilda appears unbothered as she laces her high heel boots and adjusts her stockings. She grabs a clutch from her bedroom and sneaks out of her window and down the fire escape of her foster home.
She walks the dark city streets alone, radiating confidence uncharacteristic even for a sixteen-year-old girl. She turns the corner and stops outside of a hotel. There's a much older man waiting anxiously. When she sees him, she gives him a big smile which he quickly returns. He leans in for a kiss and she turns her face slightly so his lips touch her cheek.] Happy Birthday, Pete. [She whispers into his ear.]
"I'm the luckiest man in the world." [He says. She winks and starts inside. He hastily removes his wedding ring and pockets it before following her inside.
In the room he orders champagne for two to celebrate "a new life." She asks for him to adjust the AC. When his back is turned she removes a small pill from her clutch, crushes it, and drops it into his champagne glass. When he comes back she hands it to him.]
"A new life." [She repeats and drinks her champagne. He smiles and empties his glass before starting over to her for a kiss.]
"Give me one second, Baby." [She whispers.] "There's something I got a little something special for your birthday." [She grins and moves slowly to the bathroom, closing the door gently behind her. She sits down on the ledge of the tub and begins to play Candy Crush on her cell phone. After almost an hour she peeks out of the bathroom and finds Mr. Conroy fast asleep on the bed. She hurries to his wallet and removes all of its contents. Six hundred dollars in cash and five credit cards. She reaches into his coat pocket and removes the wedding ring, slipping that into her purse along with his cuff links.
She blows him a kiss and walks out of the room, pulling her hair out of its bun and shaking it loose as she walks. When she gets outside she rounds a corner and grabs a bag from behind a dumpster. She changes her shoes and pulls on a pair of jeans and a sweater before running to the bus stop just in time to catch the bus.
She takes a window seat and leans against the glass. She frowns at her reflection and takes a tissue from her bag, rubbing off the purple lipstick she's decided is hideous. She'll never wear it again.]
