Chester is lying on a bed with her girlfriend, Cass, at Cass's parents' house, and they're tangled around each other, snuggling when a little boy scurries in to jump on them. "Aunt Cassie! It's turkey time!" he announces excitably. Cass and Chester are both laughing and untangling themselves so that Cass can grab the little boy to flip him down onto the bed playfully. "It's turkey time?!" she asks. "Oh man, I love turkey time!" Chester says. "We'll be right out, little buddy, okay?" she asks as Cassie lets her nephew up. The little boy hurries back out of the room leaving a trail of turkey sounds in his wake and Cassie leans in to kiss Chester. "Here goes nothing, huh?" she asks playfully. "Oh yeah, first Thanksgiving with your family, I'm not nervous at all," Chester jokes back. *~*~* Cass is sitting cross-legged on Chester's bed in their dorm and Chester is laying on her back with her head in Cassie's lap. "Osmosis," Cassie reads off one of the flashcards in her hand. Chester hesitates. "Uhhhh..." "You know this, baby," Cassie prompts. "Something about semi-permeable membranes and concentration equalization?" Chester asks, looking up. "...close enough." A scream rings out from outside the dorm and Chester sits up. "What the hell...?" "It's probably just people screwing around. Most of the finals are already over and people are just—" Another scream is followed by another and another. Chester gets off the bed and starts toward the window with Cassie on her heels. They both look out the window and down on the quad below, one student is covered in blood and another student is tearing her throat out with his teeth. He looks sickly and wrong. "Oh my God," Cass breathes, clutching at Chester. The longer they watch out the window, the more similar occurrences they see in the crowd gathered down below. "We gotta get out of here," Chester says quickly and she jerks herself away from the window, starting to pack a bag. "Baby, pack. Now. We're leaving." Cassie looks shocked, but she finally starts moving. "Okay. Okay," she says breathlessly. "Okay, yeah." *~*~* The highway ahead is congested with abandoned vehicles and Chester manages to wiggle her truck through some of it before she just can't anymore. The walkers are congregating around a car nearby, presumably eating, when they take notice of Chester's vehicle because it's the only one whose engine is still running. Chester parks and reaches back behind the seats to grab her shotgun out of the back where she'd been hiding it all semester under a pile of blankets so that she could go hunting on the weekends with some of the guys from study group. "We gotta run for it," she says and she looks at Cassie for a moment before setting the gun down over their laps and taking her girlfriend's face in her hands. "I'm gonna be right with you and I'm a good shot, I'm a fucking good shot. Okay? It's gonna be fine, we just have to get off the road and lose them. We're faster than they are, you've seen how they move." Cassie looks white as a ghost and her eyes are red-rimmed and scared, but she nods. "Okay, open the door really slowly and we'll be quiet. We'll be able to get a head start before they even notice us," Chester reassures her without having an ounce of confidence that what she was saying was true. The girls slip out of the passenger side door of the truck and Chester leaves the keys in the ignition and the engine running. They only manage to get to the edge of the highway when the walkers start coming after them en masse and the girls are outnumbered six to one. The walkers are moving faster than Chester remembers them going and Cassie's still in the flip-flops she slipped into before they ran out the back door of their dormitory; she's slow and Chester's trying to slow herself down to stay with her, but she's scared and her instinct is to run. Chester doesn't realize just how far ahead of Cassie she's gotten until she hears her girlfriend scream and she whirls around, nearly falling over with the momentum, pointing her gun and shooting at a walker that's about to catch up. It falters, but she misses its head, hitting it in the shoulder instead. It grabs Cassie and Chester screams as she cocks the shotgun to take another shot. She hits it in the head, this time, and it goes down, but there's already three more grabbing at Cassie and Chester can't shoot them fast enough. "Go!" Cassie shouts before crying out in pain when one of the walkers sinks their teeth into her shoulder, tearing away a chunk of skin with him when he pulls back. Chester's screaming and shooting and she can't make herself go until Cassie's down and she's disappeared under a pile of hungry walkers. The ones who haven't been able to get in the pile start to come after Chester. That's when she finally runs. |
