Derek is leaned over Caroline's pregnant stomach with his hands on either side, talking to their unborn baby. "You're taking a really long time and Mommy and Daddy are getting really anxious, so...you know, if you could hurry it up in there, little guy..." In the background Caroline laughs and her hand comes into the shot when she smacks his shoulder. He grins and the shot fades out. *~*~* In Caroline's hospital room while she's trying to get a little bit of sleep, Derek's sitting in a chair beside the bed with a newborn Lucas in his arms, looking down at him as if entranced. He lowers one of his fingers to gingerly stroke the newborn's fist and the tiny hand opens, closing around his finger. "You're my second chance, you know that? And I'm gonna be better, now. I am. You and your mom, you make me so much better and I promise you...I will never, ever leave you. I'm done with all the stuff from home. No more betas, no more running into the fray. I promise, it'll be different. You'll have a way better life than I did." The baby's still clasping at his finger, but his eyes are closed and his tiny face is screwed up in what looks like the beginnings of a screaming session. "Shhh..." Derek says softly and the baby's eyes open but only for a second before they slip closed again and he settles. "You're the start of something new." *~*~* "I can't believe you're serious about dressing him in that, he looks ridiculous," Derek complains, frowning slightly at his son dressed as a tiny turkey. "It's cute!" Caroline counters, making a face. "It's dumb," Derek replies, lifting their son off the changing table. "Come on, before Mommy gets anymore crazy ideas." *~*~* Lucas is nearing five months and he's sitting up in a tiny hipster outfit with Joey sitting behind him and holding him up with her hands on his chubby middle while Isaac is sitting across from him with Derek sitting beside Isaac. The baby is watching them both intently and the three adults are still grinning. "Where's the wolves?" Joey asks in a sing-song voice and Lucas's arms flail with anticipation as he grins. Derek and Isaac shift their faces and Lucas squeals, arms flailing again as he dissolves into baby giggles. "There they are!" Joey laughs as Lucas reaches out to touch Isaac's face only to squeal again when Isaac shifts back out of it. "I can't believe how much he loves this stupid game, this is really what you guys do all morning when I leave you with him?" Derek asks, shifting out of his own wolf-face and looking over at Isaac with an eyebrow raised. "What? He likes it," Joey points out. "Yeah, he likes it," Isaac echoes. "And he looks ridiculous, thanks for that, by the way," Derek jokes. "He looks adorable," Joey counters firmly. "You and Caroline, I swear to God," Derek laughs, taking Lucas from Joey and pushing himself to his feet. "Time for an n-a-p, little man," he's saying as he wanders out of the room. *~*~* "Come on, you can do it, buddy!" Derek coaxes, and Caroline is in the background, sitting crossed-legged across from Derek a few feet away on the living room floor. Lucas is trying to walk between them without falling, for the first time. "Come on, buddy, come get Daddy!" Lucas makes it, grabbing one of Derek's outstretched hands and he squeals triumphantly, his other arm flailing as he looks back at his mother as if to make sure she saw it. *~*~* "Ma-lee-ah," Derek says slowly and Lucas is in Malia's arms, looking up at her. The baby grunts indignantly. Malia is significantly harder to say than Ma and Da. "Lucas, can you say Ma-lee-ah?" Lucas grunts again and looks over at his father, lifting both arms in the air only to bring them down again roughly as if to say No, I can't, or I would have already. "Okay, I guess not," Derek relents, as if sensing that very unspoken response. He smiles a little, though, when Lucas seems satisfied with being let off the hook and lifts his hand to press one against Malia's mouth. "Ma!" he manages. "Close enough," Derek replies. *~*~* Lucas is getting better talking. He's learning almost as fast as he's growing, Derek thinks. They're at the orphanage in New York, Caroline holding Lucas on her lap while Derek is fidgeting anxiously in the chair beside them. A few minutes later, Cara is ushered in by a staff member who lingers in the doorway, but lets them interact independently with the little girl. "He's little..." she observes, looking at Lucas. Derek smiles. "He is, yeah." "But he's just the right size to have a big sister..." Caroline offers helpfully and the little girl smiles. She's familiar with them, but this is her first time meeting her soon-to-be little brother. Cara nods, finally, and moves forward, letting Derek lift her onto his lap. "Hi Lucas, I'm Cara," she says and Lucas gurgles a little before he starts babbling excitably and incoherently. "I'm gonna be your big sister, okay? Soon, right?" she asks, the latter question directed at Derek as she looks up at him hopefully. He gives a small smile that falls just short of his eyes, because this process is taking forever and a day. "Soon, I promise." *~*~* Cara's on Derek's shoulders and he's holding Lucas as they head into the nursery where Lucas sleeps. "Hey Dad, could we tell Lucas a story?" "I gotta go to work, sweetheart," Derek replies apologetically. "But how about this? How about we get Lucas in his crib and you can start the story and then Mommy will come help you finish it?" he offers. Her hands settle on the top of Derek's head and she knows the drill when he crouches down slowly to let her climb off. Cara gets off her adoptive father's shoulders and scurries across the room to the little bookshelf where she plucks off her favorite one: Goodnight Moon. "He likes this one," she announces. "It's his favorite." Derek smirks as he's lowering Lucas into his crib. "It's his favorite, huh?" He turns his head reflexively when he hears Caroline approaching to take over so that he can head to work and he leans over the crib bar to give his son a kiss. Then, he turns toward Cara and crouches down in front of her. "Yeah, it's his favorite," she insists. "Well, then I guess that's a pretty good choice," Derek agrees with a smile. "C'mere you, I gotta go," he adds, holding his arms out. The little blonde lets the book drop to the floor and she moves in for a hug, closing her eyes against his chest as he hugs her back. "Have a good night at work," she says. "I will, baby girl," he replies, kissing the top of her head and then letting go of her to get to his feet. "Be good for Mommy." [the video fades to black] |
