Tobias jerked a little when Chase offered to go with Owen to investigate the markers. He had the fleeting thought that he ought to with them but Tobias knew he would be useless and scared the whole time and weirdly enough, he didn’t want Owen to see him as a coward. At least Chase already knew he was. And he was maybe selfishly disappointed because Lennon would latch onto Felix and Tobias would maybe be left to fend for himself. But he knew Chase would worry about Kiley until he knew if she was okay so he doubted he’d be able to change Chase’s mind about going.
Owen didn’t protest when Chase said he’d go. He sort of had a feeling that if anyone volunteered in this group, it would be Chase. And while he didn’t want anything happening to the guy, he felt like having someone there to watch his bag would be beneficial. He glanced at Felix while handing Tobias some of the supplies to take with him.
“If those markers represent someone it doesn’t matter if it’s going to be dawn soon or not. They might need our help now. I’m not sure I can sit around or sleep in good conscience if there are people out there stuck, or worse. It’s not fair to them to make them wait for us while we’re waiting for the sun to come up. So, dumb or not, I’m going to go. If it’s a trick or a mistake, I’ll own it.” And if everyone managed to check in on the network, even better though he thought that would be unlikely.
With the minimal supplies he’d need now, Owen glanced at Edwin. “I’ll message you as soon as I find him, if I do.”
