The mention of his kid threw Jack off a bit, and he found himself blinking dumbly as his brain caught up. "Uh, yeah. Izzy. Isaiah. He was five when...uh..." His swallowed as his hand waved across the expanse of open air ahead of them. The obstacles. The people. Zenith. "He had a birthday. I missed it." Jack didn't know if the word 'easier' really applied to how it felt to repeat that information as many times as he had. The sting was there, the ache was there, but the words didn't falter or choke on him. That was a win, he supposed.
His hand moved around his person, to the harness, then the pockets of the gym pants he'd been tossed in, feeling the familiar weight of his phone there. Well, that was good to know. He took a step further from the edge, knowing that while he was attached, his device could easily drop if he wasn't careful.
"Yo, guys! Check your pockets for your phones before Family Double Dare officially starts!" He called aloud, making sure not to aim it directly at Jerome to spare his eardrums, then retrieved his device. Upon booting up the screen, he instinctively checked the battery level. Full bar. Good. This wasn't the same as when he'd been alone. There would be power and outlets when they got back to the house. It would be fine.
The image of a gleeful, fauxhawked Izzy and himself hamming it up for a selfie lit the wallpaper in the background and he grinned as he did almost every time he saw that little face. The pang was there, undeniable and sharp, but that was an old hat by now too. He shifted to sidle up to Jerome to show him, adoring pride outweighing the separation anxiety for the moment. "Lookit him. I made that." He paused, waving his hand dismissively in the air as he conceded, "I mean, I had help, but he looks just like me when I was his age, it's crazy."
