Celeste in the Mocha, OTA, MW.
Antique Apparel was up and running beautifully, and Celeste was beginning to trust her staff enough that she'd decided to take the morning away from the shop to catch up on a little paperwork, work out her staff schedule for the next week.

And so, 10 o'clock found her ensconced in a corner of the Mocha, wearing a pretty floral tea dress and peeptoe sandals, a frappuchino at her elbow as she sat with schedules spread out across her table, her diary splayed open to the page with her staff's availability.

She was very easily distractable, and happy for company.

"Persian," Sibyl said. "Eighteenth century. It belongs in one of the oldest mansions in the city, built shortly before the civil war. We're doing the drawing room and figures from it, with clothes they found in the attic lately. Like one moment in the late 1850s?"

"Sounds fascinating," she murmured. "Piecing together things that would be appropriate for the time." Her own apartment was something vaguely like that, though it had a whole variety of trinkets and furniture from 1900 to about 1960, 1950s lampshades sitting on art deco tables, mixed up with antique furniture.

"Yes, that's what we're doing," Sibyl said. "We have the room, and pictures, and the furnishings. But I need to use my imagination and sense of style to make it come alive so you feel you're right there and then."

"Oh, that would be the fun part, for me," she grins. "Trying to imagine what a lady of refined taste in the 1800s would have thought matched well."

"Oh, we have fashion magazines," Sibyl said. "And yes, it's a lot of fun getting into them and developing a natural feeling for what they would've thought stylish. Putting aside contemporary standards and diving into theirs."

Beat.

"I love my job. I guess you can tell?"

"That much is obvious, yes," Celeste admitted, grinning. "But it's wonderful, that you're so passionate about your job. A rare thing, it seems."

"You can't do a job like that without passion," Sibyl said. "If you don't want passion, you should work in a bank."

"Someone somewhere must be passionate about money," Celeste points out. "So much of our lives revolve around it, after all."

Sibyl giggled.

"If you're passionate about money," she said, "you should probably not work in a bank. Sooner or later, the temptation would get at you."

"...very true." She giggled too, sucking the last of her frappuchino up through the straw. She didn't want another one yet - she'd already had three this morning...

"But I guess any job is better when done with passion," Sibyl said.

"Exactly. I wouldn't feel right gushing about how wonderful vintage fashion is if I was standing there in Uggs and a tshirt." she pointed out, shuddering at the mere thought.

"Uggs deserve the name," Sibyl said. "They're totally fugly. Never mind they're in fashion."

She shuddered, then added, "I can't wear what I'm working on, of course, it's too old and fragile. Otherwise, it wouldn't need me. But I do get tempted by the antiques shops. I recently found these amazing summer nighties from about 1911..."

"Antiques shops are dangerous places," Celeste laughs. "I once spent a fortune on two old suitcases because I could see bits of fabric poking out the sides and the owner hadn't got keys for them." she had found some absolute steals, though, so they'd been worth it in the end.

"There's nothing like it!" Sibyl said. "It reminds me of a sample bags from a candy store. You'd never know what you'd get, but it is always something amazing."

"Oh, that's exactly what it's like," she grinned and nodded. "It's absolutely wonderful." She sat back, sighing happily. "I do miss it, already. I haven't had a chance to have a poke around any antique shops in an absolute age."

"You haven't even sneaked off to the disreputable antiques shop in that alley off the Square?" Sibyl asks, astonished. "I can't believe that! The place is incredible."

"I simply haven't had the time," Celeste says, pouting a little. "Hopefully that can be remedied now the shop's up and running."

"They're in that incredible series of hole-in-the wall spaces down that alley, and they haul out half their stock every day when it isn't raining, so it spreads all over the alley," Sibyl said. "Books, clothes, china, small furniture, mirrors, kitchen implements, linen, fashion jewellery, silver teapots all spilling out at you. And they get new stuff all the time. I can hardly keep away."

"Advantage to working where everybody is totally passionate about their job," Sibyl said. "I can pretty much come and go as I want, as long as I make deadlines and meetings. The problem with applied history geeks like us isn't that we need to put in enough hour, we get so in the flow we must be reminded to eat, or go home and shower and sleep, at times. My roommate is even worse than I. If it's not a Greek vase, it might just as well please stop existing and bothering her. She has this amazing hunk of about her age paying attention to her, and do you think she even notices him unless he talks about the broken Greek cup he asked her to fix? Nope."

Privately, Sibyl suspected that Ruth was well beyond the iffy and wobbly line between geek- and aspie-dom, but that's not something you'd say about somebody else in a conversation.

Well, at least Sibyl didn't. Her parents had already been history and restoration nuts, and raised her to be polite and think of other people.
