Saturday afternoon, around Vine Square [[multipup post, OTA/MW]]
On Saturday afternoon, Vine Square was busy as usual. Many people were about, among them:

  • Sibyl, who was browsing the basket of bits, scraps and ends in front of the Indian shop; they always had interesting little bits that would come in useful at some stage
  • Andras, who was talking to somebody on the phone, throwing around all sort of technical terms while lounging on the steps of the angel statue
  • Chandika, who was trying to keep Hanu under control on his leash while at the same time trying to cheer up little Rahul by promising him ice cream; she couldn't see any, though, and started looking decidedly harried
  • Ricky, who was cheerfully bopping along while making a meandering diagonal across the entire square; he was wearing big earphones labelled 'Bose' that held back his fluffy blond curls
  • Cindy, who was sitting in front of the building that was up for renovation next, just looking at it
  • Urquhart, who was sitting outside the Auberge watching people being busy while sipping a triple espresso.

Cindy smiled up at him. "Sure, why not?" she said. "Take me to your elevator!"

"This way," Allan said, making a graceful sweep of the arm. "yeah the art gallery," he said, nodding at it, "has all the mod cons. And an elevator. It's madea glass too."

Cindy stopped where she was, and succumbed to a gigglefit.

Allan stopped and looked at her. "So 'tis," he said. "At first I thought the same. A glass elevator - pull the other one. But it's true, we have."

"I..." she chortled. "Oh my god! I built it! That comes from all the new people at the gallery. I get invited to view my own elevator."

She kept laughing.

"Ah fegs, you're the lady architect with the name that goes on forever, aincha?" Allan laughed. "well don't I feel stupid." Not an unfamiliar feeling frankly so he was used to it. "Come away in and have a cuppa tea anyway. It's always good to admire your own work."

"Cindy Papadopoulos, at your service!" Cindy said, laughing. "And thanks, I will! Charlie has trained everybody to make decent tea, too, it seems. Is he in?"

"We don't just drink poteen in Ireland, ya know," Allan pointed out without rancour. "No, da Mouse has gone to Georgia with that man of his and the little Princess. Not too sure when they'll be back. Meantime, Leena's in charge and bossin' us all about something cruel."

"Oh, I thought you drank Guinness?" Cindy grinned. "Just as we Greeks all drink ouzo all the time. Anyway, tea will be very welcome!"

"Come on then," Allan said. "So what's that place gonna be? It looks like it's had a long hard life already."

"It's going to be a community center," Cindy said, "which is a polite way of saying 'spare offices that anybody with some sort of do-gooder or non-profit slant can wheedle somebody in City Hall into allowing them to use."

"Cool," Allan said. "Doo gooders can be a pain in the ass, but if you can get over that they do often do a species of good."

"Hence the name," Cindy grinned. "Yes, I hope all sorts of interesting things will come there and make the Square even more colourful."

Colourful, that's us," Allan said with a chuckle as he leaned past her to open the gallery door. "colourful and - and bohemian and - um," he was trying to remember something he'd heard Charlie and Seth say, "ever so slightly naughty."

"Yes," Cindy said. "Ever so slightly naughty. Our unique selling point!"

The girl at the desk looked up and smiled. "Hi Cindy," she said. "Wanna coffee?"

"Do you?" Allan asked her and she grinned and nodded.
