Multipurpose multipup, Manor, morning, OTA
Leo had actually been into the office on a Sunday, not unheard of but not a regular occurrence, because Carnahan had called him to say that some papers from Pangolin had been misdirected to his office and that he had, shamefully, forgotten to mention it. He had offered Leo Sunday evening dinner in recompense and Leo had accepted cheerfully, then had put the phone down and cursed and got down there sharpish. Now he was back, envelope in pocket, considering options and ready for tea - possibly iced because it was a warm day.

Vincenzo greeted Lawyer Beck on his way through the lobby then settled back in his seat and eased his collar. It was hot. He might have to fetch the one of the fans from the security suite. They didn't need ALL of them in there.

Ruth had finished her laundry and paused to look in the mail room. She felt - restless - and couldn't work out why.

On impulse she spoke to the young man at the security desk and he smiled and agreed to keep her small package of laundry, neatly folded inside a pillow case, in his cupboard until she came back for it, and she hitched her purse under her arm and went for a walk. Maybe to the park - or the Square.

Though she would probably end up at the museum.

The lack of the pool house was being felt quite keenly by some of the residents so Charlie had obtained an extra large and extra tough paddling pool and obtained permission to put it on a sunny patch of ground not far from the gazebo. Overnight he and Nick and Phil had put it up and filled it and now the sun was busy warming it.

He sat on the grass laughing as Nia, in a very frilly swimsuit, dipped her hands in and squealed and ran about shaking them and going "brrrrrrrrrrr". The way the temperature was rising it would soon be milk warm and he might even have a paddle himself.

Nia gave him a reproachful look but curled her legs up when Charlie lifted her towards the pool again.

"No," she said.

"All right," Charlie sat down again and dried her feet then whispered to her and she nodded and got off and pattered about collecting daisies for a daisy chain.

The daisies shouldn't have been there but Charlie had missed them so much he had sneakily sown seeds one spring and the following year they had sprouted beautifully.

The Manor could be a kind mistress to those who loved her.

Chandika had got up and wandered over, followed by Hanu, who had been dozing with his head on her elegant sandals, but didn't like to stay behind.

"Hello, Charlie!" she said. "That's such a nice thing for you to think of and get permission for. At least the kids can splash around a little. Who is redoing the pool house up there, once the insurance mess is through?"

In cases like that, there always was an insurance problem, wasn't there?

"How did you know it was me?" he said. Perhaps a little guiltily. He could have picked up one with flowers or My Little Ponies but it had been automatic to select the one with X-Men on. Charlie had had a crush on Wolverine for more years than it was comfortable to recall.

Then he laughed and added, "Insurance companies don't mess with the Manor. We pay biiiiig premiums and they pay up with reasonably good grace. They did make some noises about the quality of the initial build but their adjusters will have approved that way back when so ... The restructuring is almost done. The redecorating will be starting soon."

No mention of the anxious salvaging of original fitments and careful restoration of same. They would look lovely again once they were back in place.

"Oh!" Chandika said. "I just guessed! If anything good and sweet and clever happens around here, it's usually you."

She came closer and grinned at Rahul, standing in the pool and not shivering valiantly. Hanu put his head on the rim and looked at his little master, astonished.

Rahul waded over to him.

"Oh, I just thought," Chandika said, "that it would be a fun idea to add a little wading pool for the younger children, up there. But I guess they're much too far along to suggest it now."

"Yes, sadly," Charlie said. "The priority was to get the service resumed as quickly as possible. They have made some changes to the structure and there is a shallower area but it's one where parents will need to be in the pool with their children to make sure they don't stray out of it. Less chance of accidents that way."

"Of course," Chandika said. "Children need looking after. And it's good there's so many services and facilities. It's almost like a vertical village."

Charlie chuckled and he put out his arms to Nia who was carrying the daisies carefully. "A vertical village just about sums it up," he said, "only a lt less so than it was. People don't gossip nearly as much as they used to I've noticed. That can be a bad thing as well as a good one. On the one hand people aren't poking their nose into your business. On the other if someone's in trouble and being brave about it, how are you supposed to know to help them?"

Chandika giggled.

"Perhaps I should make a point of gossiping more," she said. "All the parents with the kids at the day care! There's always something to talk about."

"Please tell me they've been gossiping about our art classes," Charlie begged, busy threading daisies. "I left enough flier with Penny for everyone to have got one plus spares for friends."

"Oh yes," Chandika said. "Of course, I guess it's not for the very little ones. But Rahul might be big enough to learn something."

"We're doing them for little ones too," Charlie said, watching Rahul paddle between daisies. "Unless they are babes in arms we should be able to find them something they can play at. Finger painting and such. Kids Rahul's age can try just about everything. Well, maybe not blacksmithing, or using power tools, but lots of other things.

"Oh please!" Chandika giggles. "Don't mention power tools when he's in the class, he'll want to use them. He's such a little man at times!"

"Every man should know how to use power tools," Charlie said, his expression serious, his eyes laughing. "And it would be better for him to learn how to use them safely and get in good habits than try and figure it out for himself later and drill through his own thumb."

"Would you teach him that when he's old enough?" Chandika asked. "I can't. I'd drill through my own thumb as well."

"Of course I will," Charlie said. "He could come down to my workshop some time and help me mend something."

Another useful skill to learn. In Charlie's opinion too much got thrown away that would be prefectly usable with a spot of glue and a squirt of WD40.

"And I guess you have all the power tools right there?" Chandika asked.

Rahul didn't hear. He was too busy wading around in the cold water.

"They mostly make a horrible noise," Charlie said, "but they can be useful in the right hands. Your mum says i can show you some time, if you'd like. Not today, though because today nia and I are making daisy chains. Aren't we?"
"yes," Nia said and leaned against him with a smug and very possessive smirk.

"I have two daddies," Nia said. "A big one and a lickle one. Lickle one likes daisies. Big one likes me." She grinned. QED. Obviously Deacon would be delighted to be festooned in daisies if SHE did it.
