Joel people watching at the coffee shop

Joel returned from the meeting with his editor. All was going well in his moving to the city and country. While he missed living in his house and having his cat, he was relaxing more each day in the decision in moving.

Upon returning he decided to check out the coffee shop and see what he could find there.

He came in and found himself a seat in the corner, positioning himself to people watch for a few minutes.

It was a good time to see the people who lived in the Manor.

A middle-aged man at a nearby table glanced up as he seated himself, then did a polite and surreptitious double-take.

"My goodness," he said. "What a surprise," and smiled. "I'm sorry. Fanboy moment over."

Joel smiled at him. "Quite all right." No one had said anything as of yet which was strange. He was used to having at least writing a few autographs a day when out and about.

"Fan?" he asked.

"Well yes," Leo admitted, grinning, "but not in any alarming way, I can assure you. I watch your shows on cable and used to read your columns. You have a nice succinct style that I enjoy. Have you moved into the Manor?"

"Yes, last week." Joel told him. "Thank you for the compliment."

"We are on long term hiatus. I needed a change of scenery. Everyone would stop me to ask what is happening. After the hundredth time I decided a location change was in order."

"An Englishman in America sort of thing."

"Snap," Leo said with a grin. "Well, half and half actually. I hope you enjoy the Manor. It's a very friendly place."

"I'm finding it so." Joel smiled. "Joel Castilloux," he offered his hand for a shake and to find out mroe from the man he was talking to.

Leo half rose to take and shake the offered hand. "Pleased to meet you Mr Castilloux," he said then seated himself again. "I'm Leo Beck of Arliss, Beck and Carnahan. I live up on nine. Have you met many of your neighbours yet?"

"No one on my floor. I may plan an open house in a week or two once I'm satisified with my apartment. Free drinks always bring neighbors around."

"I'm on the seventh."

"Lawyer?" he asked of what his occupation was.

"Oh yes, sorry," Leo said. "Yes, it's one of the older more traditional practices so I sort of - um - fit in. An open house is a good idea. You've got some nice neighbours. There's Miss Brandon - lovely girl and a very up and coming chef. Mr McLaren - he's a - well with the Fire Department in some capacity. There's Fidel - Latin lover type and a bit of a party animal but I'm told he parties OUT of the Manor - and he shares with Sibyl Grey from the Museum. I don't know the others apart from by sight." He smiled. "The Manor is as bad as a village for gossip."

Joel laughed when he first heard that it was a traditional practice that Leo sort of fit in. "Fitting in is unique, is in it?" He knew the feeling. He fit in between the other two in work in front of everyone.

He listened about some of the Manor residents. He knew in any place there was gossip. There was gossip among the women on his street back in London. No movement gone unseen.

"Sounds like an interesting group. Do you know of a good caterer to get with to have such a party?"

"It depends what sort of catering you want," Leo said. "Miss Brandon is excellent but I'm not sure that she does parties as such. A serious chef bucking for more Michelin stars. There's Gaston at the Auberge - his red onion tarte is a thing of beauty. Or Gil at the Flamingo Lounge - he catered the last Ball here and provided drink too and he's 'in-house' so to speak. Lives on the eighth floor somewhere."

"I'll have to see about getting with Gil perhaps. Would like to keep in 'in house'"

Joel sat back. "I need to see about getting a new phone contract? Can you recommend who has the best service?"

He had a service for his laptop. His solicitor saw to that, but didn't know about his communications. He was using his phone from England but knew the roaming fees would kill him.

"you never know what you have to remember when you move."

"There's not a lot to choose between AT & T and Verizon," Leo said. "I'm with Verizon because, at the time, they offered a slightly better deal for their international plan. By now," he grinned, "AT & T could have them beaten into a cocked hat. Do you need anything special set up in the way of computers? Secure connections or anything? The in-house IT service is very helpful - patient - even with the computer barely literate, like me."

"When it comes to computers I'm a cock up. My mates always make fun of me. I didn't get a texting phone till one was given to me as a present for I wouldn't buy it." Joel laughed. "I'm to old fashioned," he joked.

"I think what I have is good for the computer. I rarely take it out of the home. But if that changes I'll ask more."

"It is nice to have everything in one spot," Joel looked out into the lobby. "The bookstore any good?"

"Mostly best sellers, travel and cookery books - what one might expect of a small establishment," Leo said. "There's a shelf of romances, some fantasy and sci-fi titles, thrillers. But they'll order anything you want and are very quick. And there's a library too - past the elevators and along that corridor. Very nice."

He wondered briefly if he should mention Barbara, the see-through librarian, and how she never seemed to be quite touching the books she carried. But he decided against it. He didn't want Mr Castilloux to think he was peculiar.

"I'll haveto check out the library books. Maybe some travel books about New York or history books. I think I'm going to lean my column to exploring the historical references.

"The nice thing about writing my own column I do what I want to do.

"I promised my friends to take lots of pictures. They gave me a digital camera thingy that I can load them on to the computer and send them."

"Any one into historical sites in the Manor?"

"Several," Leo said. "For a given value of historical anyway. There are some people who work at the Ashford museum living on seven. I believe Fin Welch is keen on the subject but then he's a jobbing writer so his enthusiasms tend to be about whatever subject he's addressing at the moment."

"Know that feeling. I go from cars to social issues. What ever gets my fancy."

Sipping his coffee. "Ashford Museum? Have to check into that."

Pulling out his small notebook he jotted down the information. He looked up, "Losing my memory," he explained.
