Auberge, Vine Square, Leo and Cindy
Lunch at the Auberge was a tried and tested recipe for gentle enjoyment. And today with the spring sun shining down it was warm enough - just - to sit at the tables outside rather than huddling in the warmth of the little cafe.

Leo held his demi-tasse between his hands to warm them and waited for his guest.

"Oh yes, that's finished," Cindy said, settling at the table. Axminster was lying down very tamely. "It turned out very nice. And I'm already researching the eco-friendly houses for Charlie."

"Good, what have you come up with?" Leo asked. "He was talking about straw bale walls and cow manure as a heating source."

"Oh yes, the cow dung was my idea," Cindy said. "So he's talking about that now after all, and not just the wooden pellets. Interesting, eh?"

Leo nodded. "I get the impression he's torn between what he knows is the best idea and what he can afford. But then," he grinned, "aren't we all from time to time."

"Oh yes, we do," Cindy said. "But the heating, yes, that's something worth holding out for."

Paula arrived with her coffee, and Cindy took it, happily.

Leo nodded and looked across the Square towards his offices. "I'm glad the weather is taking a turn for the better," he said. "Charlie tells me that this time a couple of years ago the Manor was snowed in for days but with any luck that will be a thing of the past."

"Oh, was that when the boilers were broken?" Cindy asks. "I think I heard about that."

"Yes, well it's Good Friday tomorrow and a blizzard at Easter would be most unpleasant," Leo said. "Even worse with no heating, of course. Ah, lunch. Thank you Paula."

"Oh, thank you," Cindy said to Paula, accepting her lunch with a smile.

"Ahh, yes, it's Western Easter. We still have another month," she said.

"That's a good excuse for two celebrations. Why don't you join me for Sunday lunch Western style and then in a month I'll join you for an Eastern one?" Leo suggested. "BEst of both worlds?"

"I'd say that is an excellent idea," Cindy said, picking some salmon off the salad and eating it.

"Glad to hear I haven't lost the knack," Leo said and sneaked Axminster a tiny piece of bacon out of his quiche under the table.

Axminster wagged his tail, and Cindy decided to ignore the rule-breaking; Leo was allowed.

"You always have the knack for excellent suggestions," she smiled at him.

Leo nodded. "Poor child. Well, let's hope the last generation broke the mould and they have a fresh start. I have never spoken to the new Mrs Temminck, she seems a very self contained young lady, but she looks a pleasant type."

"I don't feel the need to speak to her, even," Cindy said. "After all, she's most likely innocent of all my misgivings about the Temmincks. She wasn't even there when Cary fell off the scaffolding, or when I was fired -- to just mention the personal things."

"They have had a tragic effect on so many people around them that I quite understand your need to keep your distance." Leo sipped his coffee. "On the other hand she miht quite like alternative company to Maude Temmincks society ladies or the go-getting females Manny three must associate with."

"If I run into her in the Mocha or something," Cindy said, "I'm not going to be impolite or put her on ignore; of course not! I'm not good at being deliberately rude to comparatively harmless people."

She sipped some of her coffee.

"No, that would not be a good idea at all," Cindy said.

She paused, eating some more of her salad.

"I wouldn't know what to do with him, to be honest," she then ventured. "There's something eerily unsalvageable about the kid."

So Leo dredged a legal anecdote out of his memory - a funny one about how the anti-poultry law in the City had come about - and soon they were both able to finish their lunch and have desert too.
