Evening, Multipup, OTA/MW
Emma was mooching about in the gardens, half-heartedly throwing a ball for Lily, while engrossed in an "Anatomy for Artists" text book. She'd got the reading list for her classes in the fall and discovered that many were in the Manor Library! Yaay!! She tossed the ball over her shoulder, only to hear an "Ow!" from behind her. Shocked she turned to face whoever it was, "Oh gosh, I'm sorry, I should have looked!"

=====

Ang was waiting for an elevator, in her purse were a few leaflets and a paper bag with two boxes in it. The smell from the Mocha was beginning to turn her stomach, and she really hoped the lift would hurry up. She turned slightly as someone approached, a faint smile passing across her face, "They seem really slow tonight, I've already been here a few minutes."

=====

Icene was sitting in the Mocha, half-listening to the buzz of conversation from the other patrons, and enjoying a large cappuccino and a lemon muffin. She had some paperwork she was finishing up, but it was mostly revision of evidence notes as she had a court day on the Friday. She looked up as someone stopped next to her table, "Hi, er, need to share? Feel free."

=====

Spencer was in the gym, on a treadmill, and running his way through ten miles of sheer unadulterated thinking time. He'd deliberately picked one where he could see the TV screens, and was watching them rather than the mirrors, but he caught the door moving with his peripheral vision. He smiled in welcome, but kept running.

=====

Jane was in the laundry, wondering how some people managed to get their sheets so very dirty, and yet claim not to know how chocolate and strawberry stains got on them. Still, it was part of her job to get these things clean, so she was busy applying stain removers, and setting the sheets in the washing machine. She did turn slightly when the door opened, stuffing the last sheet in the machine quickly so they wouldn't see it, or worse, think it was hers! Just the thought had her blushing and her head dipping down.

"Yeah, everyone seemed to have fun, and the food went very well." So well in fact that Jane had only had to carry back empty dishes afterwards, "The weather was very good, fortunately. Were there any plans for a wet day, like, um, barbie in the ballroom?"

"I don't think there were any formal plans," Nick admitted. "But Charlie and I are Brits, we allow for bad weather automatically and had decided to set up table and chairs in the conservatory. We'd have still cooked outside though. Can't barbeque inside - it wouldn't be the same. There are some garden awnings that would have kept the wet off."

"Of course, this is the Manor, I figured there would be some plans in case," Jane chuckled, "It's sometimes nice to know you're not wrong about some things."

She put soap powder into the machine, added conditioner, and then turned the machine on. "Did it take long to clean up after? I kind of ran out on that since it was my day off."

"No, not long," Nick said. "That's the nice thing about the informal type of event. We had more help than we knew what to do with." He chuckled. "I had an ex-football star helping me with the cooking and at the end there were tenants all over the place with black sacks picking up garbage. It was cool. But then," he grinned, "that sort of event they weren't going to be wearing their Jimmy Choos."

"Their what?" Jane looked at him blankly, and then sat down in a chair, her uniform settling into creases that had been there since lunch. She wasn't overly fond of the apartment on 12 with the wooden floors, she wound up polishing them on her hands and knees.

She tucked her feet under the chair and looked up, "I'm glad they all helped out though, I just, needed some time to myself after all that socialising." Oh wow, she'd spoken to Travis briefly, Memphis while eating, and that was pretty much it, other than passing a few plates that people wanted while filling up her plate for more food.

"Yeah it was a busy afternoon," Nick said. He unscrewed the cover and lifted it off then knelt to take the side off as well. "You got any holiday booked yet?" he asked, glancing up at her.

"No, nowhere to go really, and, given all the leeway I got when I started, I guess I've not got enough left to go anywhere with anyway. Not after the trip back to San Diego to get my divorce." Jane looked down, "It's ok, there's always next year I guess."

"You could swap a couple of shifts," Nick suggested. "Get a long weekend and go - I dunno - New York for the galleries and museums?"

"I don't, um, I don't do well in crowds." Jane shook her head, "Too many people is, unsettling, scary even."

She shrank back a little into her chair. "I like things quiet, the country is nice round here, empty in places, it's beautiful."

"Well there you are then," Nick said. "A nice little country inn and a few days quiet. Believe me, in high summer the City gets pretty steamy. It's good to get away to somewhere cooler even if it's not for long."

"That sounds, hot, maybe I should try and find somewhere nice to hide out for a few days," Jane smiled. "Maybe, if I can get the time off."

She shook her head, "I can just see Mr Ruprecht saying yes to that, he was pretty uptight about me going to San Diego to get the divorce finalised. didn't seem impressed when I got back in time either."

Nick shrugged. "Ruprecht can be an ass," he said. "But he only takes notice of the maids if they take notice of him. It's Mary-Anne Baker who makes up the shift lists. You should try speaking to her if you just want a couple of days."

He grinned. "The maintenance guys have got it sorted. We all cover each other and if we don't ask he can't say no."

"Is that how it's done? I'll have to remember that." Jane chuckled, "I'll definitely talk to Mary-Ann, she's a very nice lady."

The washing machine she was using changed it's cycle, drawing her attention briefly. She looked at it, then down at her hands in her lap, "It's another big step forwards though, to leave the City, even for a while?" She wasn't really aware that she'd spoken out loud.

Nick grunted, unaware that she hadn't been speaking to him. "You went all the way to San Diego to do something horrible. I'd'a thought going somewhere nice that YOU chose, when YOU want to go and YOU decide when to come back would be a bit easier."

Jane looked up, unsure, "I did rather didn't I? That's nothing though to having driven all the way here from San Diego via Mexico and most of the Eastern Seaboard. So why am I scared of going less than a hundred miles?"

It sounded so daft when she said it out loud, "Maybe I can do that, take a small trip, just a short one. I've been out for drives in the car, picnic lunches," well, one picnic, and precisely two other drives, "I reckon I could, maybe just, do a night away to start with?"

"Yeah, start small," Nick said. "Look in the book and pick a nice quiet little family motel with cable in every room, drive out there, spend the night and drive back. Remember," he shrugged, "you can come back any time you like if it doesn't feel right or you get lonely."

Jane nodded, "I'll try it, definitely, maybe go on a Saturday after work, then come back on the Sunday. It shouldn't be too hard. Really it shouldn't."

She looked up, "Any recommended directions?"

The washing machine rumbled to a stop, then switched from pre-wash to wash and started up again.

"Why not head out towards the mountains?" Nick said. "There's a little town called Pikestaff, less than a thousand people but they've got a really nice little motel, old fashioned y'know." He smiled. "And there's a little store that sells everything and a diner."

"I'll have to try that then, might be a good idea to get a local map or something first? So I can find my way and if I do get lost I might be able to find my way back?" Jane shook her head with a smile, "Even if I did do the longest trip map free, considering this time I'd be coming back it might help?"

"Every road for a hundred miles signposts to the City," Nick said with a chuckle. "I can't see you getting so badly lost you can't find your way back."

He finished fitting the filter and began to screw the side back on the machine. "You could always get one of those GPS things. Tom-toms or whatever they are called."

"I still don't understand how those things work, I'm far happier with a paper map, I can read one of those." Jane grinned, "Plus a map won't tell me what to do all the time, and allows for me to take a side trip without telling me I'm going the wrong way and to turn around."

John had had one, and was forever bragging about it, but Jane had hated it. That oh so superior voice demanding they do this that or the other when road closures and traffic meant they were better off doing something else entirely.
