PSL: When Steve Met Carol
When he was finally released from the hospital Steve spent two days testifying before Congress then he left DC behind without a second thought. Tony was kind enough to offer him a place to stay in the newly named Avengers tower but once he got settled there he started looking for a place in Brooklyn.
Most surprisingly, Sam came with him. Apparently, he was willing to stick with him not just for finding Bucky but in general too. Steve really tried not to let the search for his best friend consume him but he wasn't like Sam who had a job with the VA in Harlem. He lingered on the outside of Sam's life, still working on cleaning up Hydra and trying to find Bucky.
Sam called him up for lunch one day and no excuse would discourage him. It had been awhile since they'd done something together outside of looking for Bucky so Steve went. Sam had picked a diner near the VA that was popular with the locals. They had had lunch there before so Steve walked in without hesitating until he saw that Sam was not alone. There was a blond woman sitting next to him and they were talking casually. He frowned but wasn't rude enough to walk out when he suspected something.
"Sam," he said when he got to the table, "Who's your friend?"
"Steve!" Sam grinned and gestured for him to sit across from the blond woman. "This is Carol, former Air Force, and she works at the VA with me. I thought it would be nice if she joined us for lunch. I'm sure you don't mind."
Sam had that look, the one that meant Steve shouldn't ruin this by being Steve. Nat had a look like that when she tried to get him out dating. This was a set up. If Sam and Nat had joined forces Steve could see a lot of eye rolling in his future.
"Hi," Steve smiled politely because he wasn't an asshole but he really didn't know what to do. "I hope you weren't waiting long."
