After the day of fun at the Mini-Golf place, Kate was excited to get back to the Facility so she could take a quick shower and get ready to hang out with Scott and Cassie. As much as he was looking forward to spending more time with Scott, she was a little nervous about seeing Cassie. What if this Cassie was different from the one she knew? What if this Cassie hated her?

She headed to the game room to meet up with them, nervous and excited. Nervoucited? And hungry. Kate always wanted a slice of pizza. She turned into the room, grinning brightly.

"How dare you," Kate teased, moving quickly across the room toward the sofa. She was staring at Cassie. Somehow this Cassie was totally different from the one she'd known, and yet... it was the same girl.

Kate's eyes were filled with unshed tears. "I love cheesy bread," she said, giving a little laugh. "Thank you!"

Then she settled on the sofa, eyes still on the young girl. She could hardly believe it.

"Wow." What else can she say? She swung her head back to her father. "I guess someday in the future I might be able to fight with you too."

Scott's heart warmed just as it sunk. Cassie actually fighting bad guys in some other reality didn't really hit him the same way as it did just the thought of her doing it in this one.

"Plates are on the table," Scott said, gesturing at the stack of them. "Help yourself."

Kate shook her head with a chuckle. "Don't jump into things too quickly, Cass. Maybe we can do some trainings first. First Aid, Safety, Self-Defense... it's a good start. It might take years and years for you to be ready to actually fight like a superhero." ...hopefully that was the right thing to say. Kate glanced over at Scott.

"Plates? Pssh. I guess." She grinned as she loaded up a couple of slices onto her plate. "This is a lot fancier than when I have pizza with Clint." She gave Cassie a wink.

"Oh goodness. Your costume was black and red, and you had this mask," Kate lifted her hands as if to draw the outline of the mask shape on her own face. "It was full coverage, from the collar down to the gloves. Black pants. Really classy." She grinned.

"I wore purple. Usually with bare shoulders and hips, and fingerless gloves. It's easier to control the bowstrings that way." She glanced over at Scott. "What's your dad's look like?"

	"The first time I saw it, I thought it was an old motorcycle suit," Scott said. "I'll show you it sometime." Cassie was practically bursting at the seams for her dad to stop talking so she ask her question. "Can you draw it for me?" 	Kate set down her pizza, dusted her hands on her jeans, and accepted the pen and paper plate from Cassie. "Brilliant." She grinned, then uncapped the pen and drew out the shape of Cassie's uniform. Artist she was not, but by the end of it she was pretty pleased with the outcome. She held the plate out to Cassie. "This part's black, and this part's red." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Kate nodded. "Pink is a pretty fantastic color." She beamed as Cassie jumped up and ran off toward her room.

"She's better." The idea that Kate was harboring the secret about Cassie dying in her world hit her like a punch to the gut. She turned her attention to Scott and cleared her throat.

"She died in my world." --she'd planned on saying it more tactfully, but it just leaped out like that. A rush of emotions climbed up her throat and tears spilled down her cheeks. "She died in battle, and there was nothing I could do to save her, and I didn't want to tell you but I just couldn't keep it secret anymore, and I just want to hug her. I'm so, so sorry."

"What?" It took a moment for Scott to process what Kate said. He knew that Kate's Cassie wasn't his Cassie, and for a second he felt both grateful for it. It only took another moment for him to feel guilty for feeling that way. He couldn't imagine how his alternate reality counterpart might have felt. He couldn't imagine his own life without his Cassie.

And yet, here was Kate living without hers.

"Hey," Scott said softly, trying to catch Kate's gaze with his own. "Come here."

He wrapped his arms around her. "If you wanna hug Cassie, you should ask to hug her." Scott feels his heart clench again at thought of his Cassie not being around. "She's a huggy kid."

The relief that he wasn't mad at her for keeping the secret washed over her. Kate couldn't help a little sob from escaping as he wrapped his arms around her. She leaned in against him, trying to keep control. Cassie would be back in a moment, and Kate didn't want her friend to see her this way. Especially given how young she was.

"I will," she laughed through some tears. "I'm going to hug her like there's no tomorrow." It'd been years since she'd hugged her friend, and she couldn't wait to do it again.

	There was so much Scott wanted to ask, but he didn't feel like he was in a position to ask it. Not now, anyway. Cassie would be back soon and the last thing he wanted her to see was the both of them getting teary-eyed. If she hadn't been so emotional over Cassie, she would have realized how amazing it felt to be wrapped up in his arms. But she was recovering from the outburst of emotion, wiping at her face and trying to stop the tears so that Cassie wouldn't come back to think something was wrong.

Kate sat up a little and pulled her arm from around him. "We can talk about it Friday." She cleared her throat. "Not really the best first date conversation material, but..."

	"First date?" Scott repeated, completely taken aback by it. He hadn't been aware that it was a date. Or that Kate was even interested. But just as Scott said it, Cassie came noisily racing back in. It could have been a joke. In one of those "if you agree then it's a date but if you disagree then it's totally a joke and haha I'm so funny" middle school ways.

But then Cassie was back, and Kate was wiping any last remnants of tears from her cheeks. Her eyes were still a little red, but she was smiling. She sat up.

"Yes. Everything is great." She offered up her arms. "Can I have a hug?"

	Kate reached forward and wrapped her arms around the younger version of her friend. She hugged Cassie tight for a long moment, then finally pulled back with a grin. "Okay, what are we watching? I believe I was promised dinner and a movie." (Reply to this) (Parent)
