Alfred had been given permission to "outdo himself" and outdo himself he did. Wayne Manor was polished to a shine and decorated to the nines. The catering had been meticulously planned, with Alfred making several of the recipes himself. The ballroom had a stage that would have a live band with dancing for most of the evening and Zatanna's magic show at other times.

The only cause for complaint was due to the guest list. With all the plus ones, it was all a bit chaotic. While everyone either needed an invitation or to be with someone with an invitation to get in, it seemed that wasn't much of a barrier to entry.

Bruce realized a little too late that the conversation was heading into dangerous territory. Not the flirting, that was fine, rather the reminiscing. It was impossible to remember Barbara as Batgirl without remembering why she wasn't. He managed not to look at her chair, though that wasn't enough to keep out the images, the pictures Joker had taken to drive Jim mad. Barbara, naked and bleeding to death on the floor. How he'd laugh to know he'd gotten to the Batman as well.

This wasn't the time or place for this. Bruce Wayne had no reason to be so worked up over her injuries. He never said anything real as Bruce Wayne anyway. Settling his Bruce Wayne 'mask' firmly back in place—had it slipped for a moment? He wasn't sure—her responded to the second part of her comment.

"Rich and handsome. Glad we've got our priorities straight. And I see you generously left off my many character flaws" He chuckled, not at all ashamed of her implied characterization. "Though I'm afraid you're mistaken on one point. I've never been eligible. I like women too much to inflict myself permanently on one. I'd drive the poor thing to the madhouse in under a week. Why any of you put up with me, I've no idea." Which was a true in a couple different ways.

"Because," Barbara smiled, leaning in close. "Underneath all that polish and all those character flaws--" The ones he had invented for his public persona. "--is a good guy. One of the best guys." She leaned forward a bit more, pressing a quick kiss to his cheek. She sat back properly, still all smiles. "Thanks for taking some time out of your rotation for me. It was really good seeing you again." It felt like it had been too long since they'd been face-to-face. "Happy birthday, Bruce."

She wheeled away from the billionaire, tossing him a grin over her shoulder. That had been a nice distraction from all the uncomfortable parts of this soiree. Now, if she could just track down Dinah maybe they could make an early retreat.

Bruce watched her go, warmed by the compliment and perhaps a little annoyed with himself at how much it seemed to mean to him. He didn't do this for the praise.

There was a touch of something else too. Something he couldn't quite put his finger on...

But then he was being called away, surrounded by more well-wishers and parasites. Shrugging the feeling off as nostalgia, Bruce focused his attention on the newcomers.
