INDEPENDENT RADIO: Transcript from "Groucho Marxist," 2 June 2010
Welcome to the live stream of Groucho Marxist, an independent podcast hosted jointly by the generous folks at Students Creating Radical Change and The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest! We come live to you every Wednesday from our humble studios in the neighborhood formerly known as College Park and 24/7 via podcast! We’re going to lead you into the show with an old classic from one of our favorite bands before we get to headlines. MCROY: Hey, New York City! Nita McRoy here at the Groucho Marxist Studios for today, the first Wednesday in June! Holy crap, time flies – already halfway through the year, are we? My usual partner in crime, Kurt, couldn’t make it in because he had to do something with his family in Jersey for some federal holiday that apparently happened sometime within the past week, so welcome to the airwaves the one and only Kenya Heady! HEADY: Hey there, airwaves. Long time, no guest spot. MCROY:Wait until Thanksgiving and I’m sure Kurt will keep you rolling in opportunities to bitch about everything from patriarchal oppression to the price of soybeans. Anyway, now it’s time for everyone’s favorite feature: Back Page News! HEADY: You know the drill, everybody; hell, even I do. Before we get to the main meat and potatoes of the show— MCROY: —or quinoa and tempeh, if that’s your thing— HEADY:—we like to look through the news that wasn’t, isn’t, nor ever will find any accolades on the New York Times’ front page or CNN-A’s first news brief. First on our docket today: a case of mailbox bombings on Memorial Day. MCROY: We know, we know: what’s the big deal? Bunch of kids had a little too much fun with their fireworks and went postal in the most literal sense of the word. It’s only garnered a shred of attention in the police blotters and presumably for good reason, given that it’s a bunch of random explosions that you usually get on a federal holiday devoted to loving and respecting our armed services or whatever. HEADY: Problem is, kids usually aren’t this organized. Looking over at the reports, you’ll notice that out of all of the “reports to United States Postal Service property,” there’s only five, all of which are on a specific block in each District. District 1 gets first block north, 2 gets second block south, and so on. And to wit, they always have a description of “painted debris” included. There’s never really any mention of what they mean by that, especially given that mailboxes are always painted, but I’m guessing they mean that this is a little something special that the NYPD is trying to keep quiet about. MCROY: We here at Groucho Marxist think there’s a little something to be said about these “bombings.” Clearly, they didn’t hurt anybody, so why cry about it? But why keep it quiet, NYPD? Keeping public, organized vandalism on the down-low seems a little… well, dubious to us here at the studio. If I was a betting woman, I’d put down some money and say that we were dealing with a bunch of people that didn’t want the rest of the public to think that we weren’t still angry about a little something called the Housing Riots. As it is, I’ll just say it. |
