Who: Madeleine Winters, James Potter, Cale Wright
When: August 18/19
Where: THE QUIDDITCH CUP YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
Status: In-progress

Madeleine Winters was ready for action.

She was wide awake, dressed, armed with a broomstick and bouncing on the balls of her feet. Her mother had already told her several times to settle down, that her excitement was riling up her siblings as well. "No way, Mum!" she'd laughed in response. "Arlen's ready to lay down and take a nap; you'll see!"

"Kit-kit-kit-kit-kit-kit-kit-kit-kit!" Arlen had chanted at that moment, running by with his own toy broomstick. "Let's play! I wanna play!"

"Arlen-arlen-arlen-arlen-arlen!" Madeleine crowed back, grinning before catching sight of her mother's exasperated face. "...all right, so maybe I am, a little bit."

But there was so much to be excited for! She, Jamesies, and Cale had all made plans to meet up, and Cale would be bringing by his own little brother as well. She was confident that he and Arlen would hit it off, and then the three of them would be free, free to do anything they wanted for the day.

"I bet you I can catch the Snitch before you do, Arlen!" challenged Madeleine, bending down to grab their toy Snitch from its small box. It wouldn't fly as far or as frantically as a real Snitch would, meaning that Arlen wouldn't be on a disadvantage on his smaller broomstick. "Let's play until everybody else gets here!"

James had been a drifting wraith of impatience since early that morning. Thanks to his parents' connections at the Ministry he was guaranteed a ticket to the Cup and assured that he wouldn't have to worry with them staying in his hair for any of the trip. They were needed for security, but all James needed to worry with was watching Lilylu.

After the initial disorientation from traveling by portkey, James found himself ushered through security and on towards the rows of tents where witches and wizards were prepared to camp out for the extent of the game.

"You've got things handled, right?" Harry asked, placing a hand on James' shoulder to keep him from bolting immediately to go in search of his mates. "You'll keep an eye on your sister?" Harry's gaze shifted to Albus as well. "You both will?"

"Of course!" James declared, shifting his broomstick to the other shoulder and slinging his free arm around his sister. "When have I ever lost a sibling?"

Harry's expression was skeptical, but he was needed to help manage security. He'd have to trust that his eldest could handle a little responsibility for once. Or at least hope that Al would pick up the slack.

Less than a minute later the goodbyes were finished and the Potter children were on their way through the colourful declarations of team spirit.

"Oy!" James called hopefully. "Madeleine! Cale! You lot somewhere in this mess?"

Madeleine was up in the air, whooping as she watched Arlen make a dive for the Snitch when she thought heard James' voice faintly above the chatter. "James?" she shouted, twisting about for a look around. "Where are you?"

She turned her attention back to Arlen just in time to see him swoop back up, clutching the Snitch in triumph. "Well done, Arlen!" she cried. "Bring it here!"

She waited until he had flown over, then grabbed hold of the broom. "All right, squirt, time to switch back. Jamesies is here now, so I need my own broom."

"Awww, do we have to...?" Arlen wheedled, looking hopeful. Madeleine couldn't blame him, really--her broomstick had been a gift from her father, his way of making up for all the times he hadn't been able to go to Diagon Alley, or Gringotts, or Hogsmeade, or even to Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross. And boy, had he made up for it.

"Yes," she said emphatically, giving the broom a slight shake. "I can only go up a bit past head level on this thing--I was being nice enough by letting you take mine for a go, anyways!"

"All right, all right," Arlen relented with a pout. "But I want another try later!"

"We'll see," Madeleine grinned, holding the broom steady as she slid onto it in front of him. "Now, hold on."

A moment later, the two of them were soaring over the heads of everybody else, laughing merrily as they looked for James.

"Jaaaaaaamesies! Where are you?"

Lily laughed as she spotted Madeleine first and lifted a hand to wave vigorously at the other girl. "Down here!" she called, cupping both hands around her mouh.

James looked up and grinned. Perfect. Finding Madeleine this quickly meant they could snap Cale up in no time flat.

"How far's your tent?" he called. LilyLu hadn't brought her broom, but he could give her a lift. Al could fend for himself on his broom. James already planned to try to lose him in the air.

"Just a bit over there!" Madeleine called back, pointing vaguely. "Come on, Jamesies, get on up in the air with us!"

Why walk through the crowd when they could just fly on over?

That was all the encouragement he needed to mount his broom in one swift movement and kick off from the ground, enjoying the feeling of the wind in his hair. He hadn't been able to fly much for the past few days, what with preparing for the trip to the Cup and all.

"James!" a small voice called after him, but it was too late.

James was airborne.

Making a few quick loops just to get it out of his system, James leveled off his broom beside Madeleine and flashed Arlen a grin. "'lo."

In the time that had taken, Albus and Lily had gotten into the air as well, hovering just off to the side as the younger red head rolled her eyes at her brother in exasperation.

"Hi, James!" chirped Arlen, giving him a wave. Madeleine rolled her eyes, but the grin on her face gave her away as not really being exasperated by it.

"All right, Lily? Albus?" Madeleine asked instead, looking over to the other two Potter siblings. Then she looked back to James. "So. I move we drop baggage at camp, and then find the bird.

"Your thoughts?" she asked, even as Arlen protested with a "Heeeeeey!"

"First one to catch him gets the points?" James suggested, lifting both eyebrows. "Those're my thoughts."

If Michael couldn't be bothered to show up on time, there was no reason James wouldn't turn him into a human snitch. He didn't have much practice going after snitches, but he was willing to try his hand at it if it meant getting hold of their mate quicker.

"All right," Lily replied cheerfully.

Al offered a vague smile. "All right," he echoed.

James shot him a glance to see what he thought of the plan, but Al ignored him for the time being. He planned to split off from James' more hair-brained ideas of a good time soon enough to meet up with a few of his house mates.

"Deal!"

To say Madeleine liked this plan was an understatement.

Madeleine loved this plan.

They were near the front of camp, so it only took a moment to get back to the Winters' tent. Madeleine swooped down, hovering just off the ground so that Arlen could (reluctantly) swing off the broom. "We're going to find Cale, Mum!" she called in the direction of the tent, before pushing back off and up into the air. And then she asked of James, "Ready?"

A cursory scan of the area to ensure that Cale wasn't already within sight and that they'd have an actual seeking game on their hands...

"GO!"

Cale stretched one arm over his head, then allowed it to drop back down as he strolled through the line of tents that made up Puddlemere United's quadrant of the camping grounds.

Roger stayed close beside him, still enthralled by the toy Quidditch player and broom Alex had bought him earlier. Their uncles had excused themselves earlier, leaving the nine year old in Cale's care.

Not that he minded much. He hardly ever got to see his siblings.

"Where to next?" Cale asked, glancing down at the boy.

"Let's see the other team's camp!" the younger boy enthused.

"All right." Cale still hadn't quite gotten used to the American accent the other boy had picked up, but he imagined that it would seem more natural the longer he was around him.

---

Meanwhile, James was shooting through the air, dodging some of the taller flagpoles that enthusiastic fans had set up, and ignoring that he'd just abandoned his siblings after no more than half an hour since his father had given him his instructions.

He wasn't worried, though. Lils could take care of herself, he knew. And Albus? Well. He wasn't particularly out of sorts about anything happening to him. He'd handle it or James would laugh at him.

"Keeping up?" James called over the wind, smirking as he put on another burst of speed, still mindful enough to scan the ground for his prize.

"Always!" Madeleine shouted back, laughing as she pulled up to slide over to James' other side. "Hey, is that--"

She cut off, banking suddenly. She hadn't actually seen Cale, but she was guessing that maybe she'd be able to feint and gain some time.

Sparrooooooooooooow... where aaaaaaaare youuuuuuuuu...?

She was going to win!

He wasn't quite as well-trained as a Seeker, but Madeleine's distraction actually helped him rather than hinder. When he looked to see what she was going after, James gaze momentarily lighted on the two boys down below.

James nearly cackled.

Not even waiting to see if Madeleine had seem them too, James dipped into a sharp dive, racing toward the smaller of the two unsuspecting boys, then pulling up suddenly and breaking. Slowed down enough to not risk taking the little boy's head off, James snatched him up and pulled up again.

--

Cale only heard a muffled squeak that gave away that something had happened.

Then James was crowing, "The smaller one is the snitch, then?"

Cale blanched. What was his dorm mate doing?

"Potter! Put him back!" he demanded. It never even crossed his mind that Madeleine couldn't be far behind.

"What? No way!" Madeleine's response could have been to either the fact that her attempt at faking James out had failed, or to his claim that the smaller of the two brothers was the Snitch. "The game was to find Sparrow!"

Speaking of whom... Madeleine rocketed downwards, pulling up just in time to avoid smashing anyone's head in. "Hullo, bird," she grinned at Cale, giving him a jaunty wave. "Hop on!"

Cale eyed the broomstick warily before giving up. He knew better at this point than to argue. James was likely to rocket up into the clouds just to force his hand if he pushed it too far.

Gingerly Cale swung a leg over the broom and took his place behind Madeleine.

"And just what mad things have you two decided to do?" he asked, frowning slightly.

"Hang on!" was all that Madeleine responded with. And then they were shooting upwards, quickly reaching the same level as Jamesies again.

"You hadn't shown up yet," she explained then, a laugh in her voice. "So James and I decided to come and find you!"

"And kidnap us both?" Cale wondered skeptically.

"Hey, it's not bad," Roger assured, beaming from his position on the front of James' broom. "It beats walking!"

Cale shook his head. Children really weren't that magnificent at decision making.

"And now that you've found me?" he continued, looking round at James.

"We get ready for the game," James decided brightly. "In case anything excited happens. None of the players are half as good as yours truly, but you never know...!"

Merlin. Cale had known it was a mistake to agree to meet up with these two during the last of his summer break.

"Hey!" Madeleine protested, shifting just enough to glance over her shoulder back at Cale. "I didn't kidnap anybody! You climbed on that broom of your own accord."

As James spoke, she leaned forward, slowly bringing the four of them closer together. "So this's your brother, eh, Sparrow? He doesn't sound much like you, does he?"

Then she added, "And I fly circles around you and you know it, James Potter!"

Ignoring the fact that there was no way to actually back up that claim. Ignoring it outright.

James laughed outright.

He was convinced he was Merlin's gift to Quidditch and not even his best mate was going to convince him otherwise. He would admit that Madeleine could keep up with him. Sometimes. Maybe. But that was about it.

James angled his broom toward where the enormous stands had been set up a ways off and offered a one-armed shrug. "Sounds mental to me, but I won't call St. Mungo's on you."

Cale ignored James in favor of answering for his brother. "He's been off in America," he explained, lifting an eyebrow at the younger boy.

"You guys are the ones who sound weird." Roger interjected firmly.

James turned to peer at the boy over his shoulder and was rewarded by Roger making a face, then rolling his eyes.

"Most of you guys don't even say your 'h's," Roger protested. He would have waved his arms over his head in frustration, but he didn't dare. He hadn't been on a broom many times before and he didn't really want this time to be his last.

"It's 'blokes' or 'you lot'," James instructed, amused now. "'Guys' just sounds off."

"And we do so say our 'h's," Madeleine said, piggybacking off of James' words. "Everybody knows it's herbs, not 'erbs."

"'Erbs" just sounded like a bad rendition of a French accent, to her!

"Shall we head back?" she asked then, turning her broom toward the camp and gesturing.

She hadn't come to the Cup to get into an argument on the English versus the American accent, after all!

"If you want to sound a bit like Hagrid you could say 'erbs," James mused. He followed Madeleine's cue regardless, angling back toward camp. He pondered racing for a moment, then decided against it.

Cale might sulk for the entirety of the game if he did. And James really didn't want anything to be a downer today. It was Quidditch. It was going to be brilliant.

"What exactly is our plan?" Cale tried again. "You lot said earlier that I wouldn't need to worry about tickets..."

"We've got the best," James bragged. It wasn't entirely true, but because Harry had such a top job in the ministry, he'd gotten them all fairly decent seats. He'd even gotten one for Cale after James had declared he needed his personal entourage of Madeleine and Cale with him at all times.

"Well, we'll go back to camp first," said Madeleine, setting off towards the Winters' tent. "Arlen's there, as are Nan and Grandda." She didn't mention that they could leave Roger with them, but she imagined Cale would likely remember the conversation they'd had about that without her saying so. "James and I--" Oh, look! She was putting words in his mouth! "--thought that we could go through all the peddlers and get something for the game before it started! And then of course, we have to be there for the game itself."

Not that she was excited for the game, of course. Not at all!

Except for that she really, really was.

"Who d'you like for the Cup anyways, bird?"

"The Quafflepunchers, I s'pose," Cale answered. He was only a touch distracted. Being on the broom hadn't been so bad at first, but the longer he was aloft, the more nervous he became.

At least Potter wasn't the one flying. Cale had learned long ago that despite all of James' bragging about being the best, riding when he was the one flying was suicidal.

James scoffed. "Puddlemere all the way, mate. The Quafflepunchers won't last ten minutes! It's almost not worth it to have even got tickets."

Touching down at the Winters' camp, James waited for Roger to climb down before dropping to the ground. He hadn't planned on seeing the vendors first, but now that Madeleine had mentioned it, it didn't seem like a bad plan.

"Cally wouldn't know a good Quidditch team if it bit him," he decided.

Cale ground his teeth, reminded for the umpteenth time why he usually avoided his dorm mate during the summer.

"The Quafflepunchers?" Madeleine repeated, wrinkling her nose. "Really, bird?"

Anybody knew that the Quafflepunchers didn't stand half a chance against Puddlemere! But Madeleine wasn't going to press the issue, instead dropping down until she and Cale could dismount. With that, the broom was thrown up over her shoulder, and Madeleine was darting into the tent. "Arlen!" she called. "Arlen, come out here!"

Time to see if their plan would take!

The plan had worked like a dream. Apparently it had never crossed Roger's mind that there might be other children his age to play with. Immediately he had declared to the other boy to watch what he could do, then stood on his hands with an accomplished air about him.

Taking advantage of the distraction, James had struck off in the lead to their next destination with Cale reluctantly trailing along and making a point to strike up a conversation more with Madeleine than with his fellow dorm mate.

By the time they had climbed up to the box where their tickets had landed them a spot, James was loaded down with as many souvenirs as his pocket money could buy. Among them was a rosette that cheered on Puddlemere for him whenever he prodded it, a trick wand that shot of small, harmless fireworks, and a box of over-sized bertie bott's.

Spotting Albus sitting with Scorpius (he couldn't believe his brother had invited Malfoy along!), James made straight for the available seats farthest from them and took his place.

Cale chose one seat over, making certain that he'd have Madeleine as his Potter buffer. He'd already bought his souvenirs and left most of them with his brother.

"Do you have to do that?" he asked, giving James an annoyed glance as the other Gryffindor shot off another firework.

"'Course," was the immediate, somewhat distracted reply.

"Most definitely!" Madeleine laughed, cheering as the firework in question burst into color. "Come on, Sparrow, live a little! It's the Cup!"

And she was certainly living it up herself. Madeleine was sporting a Puddlemere United "tattoo" on one cheek, that moved about and would unleash a shower of (harmless!) sparks whenever points were scored for the team. But her real pride and joy was an absolutely gargantuan, plush, dark blue top hat emblazoned with the Puddlemere bulrushes. It was perched on her head, singing "Beat Back Those Bludgers, Boys, and Bring That Quaffle Here" at the top of its tinny little lungs. She'd seen it on a man in the marketplace, and although he'd told her it had been a custom job, he'd swept it off his own head and dropped it on top of hers. "But I think that a loyal girl such as yourself has far more need of it than I in this hour," he'd chuckled, bowing low. "Once the Snitch has been caught, you may return it to me."

The memory made her grin, reaching up to touch the hat again. She still couldn't believe he'd given it to her so easily--it was so neat!

"How long've we got until it starts?" she asked, hanging over the edge of the stands and surveying the pitch. "It's gotta be soon, right?"

"It's gotta start now!" James declared, heaving the most exasperated of his put upon sighs and sinking low in his seat.

They couldn't keep Quidditch from him forever! It was unheard of -- especially with this much excitement keeping the stands buzzing. If they waited too long, James was certain that someone would try to fill the gap in entertainment.

Not to name any names, of course.

Lily suddenly lunged over the seat behind him, nearly upsetting a dark haired woman. "Look!" she cried, pressing her omnioculars to her eyes as she tried to not fall straight over the seat.

Getting at least a little caught up in the excitement, Cale pointed toward the top box where the announcer had just come into view, voice booming as he welcomed everyone to the Cup.

"About time," drawled Malfoy behind them, but James was too focused on the teams shooting out on broomsticks to hex him.

"All right!" Madeleine cheered, punching the air as she squinted upwards. "Let's go, Puddlemeeeeeere!"

As the balls were released, the Quaffle thrown up in the air, the entire stadium went up in raucous cheers. For an instant the Snitch was in front of them--just long enough to go zooming upward--and then the game was on.

As the hours passed, the score totals kept going up, with no sign of the Snitch. Madeleine took to keeping score of how many times a Beater managed to either break a bone or knock somebody off their brooms, rather than anything else. (There was a second score she was keeping, too, of how many times Scorpius Malfoy said something that made her want to get up and knock his teeth in, but that was a score that she was keeping to herself, rather than sharing with the rest of the group, thank you!)

At one point, Madeleine leaned over toward Cale, about to make a comment about how McCallen, who'd just been shown on the wizarding version of a gigantic telly screen at a football match, had a brilliant black eye forming up--but then she was on her feet.

"Look!" she shrieked, pointing furiously. "He's seen it! Ginnerty's seen it!"

"Dive, you daft prat!" James roared, coming up out of his seat to pump his fist into the air. The Snitch had angled for the ground at that moment, and the other Seeker had also spotted what was happening and pulled up short to join in the race to the turf.

Lily had been distracted momentarily by the conversation she had gotten into with the dark haired woman from before, but at Madeleine's shriek, she had lunged back over the seats again, this time actually slipping into their row. She recovered quickly and stood up in James's seat to see over her brother's head.

As she struggled with the omnoculars to get them to focus on the action, James whooped and set his rosette to playing. "Bet everyone a galleon he catches it and the other Seeker smashes his face in!"

And that?

That was when the Bludgers crashed the party and slammed into Ginnery's broom.

And then the Snitch was gone rocketing off so quickly that the other Seeker barely had time to stop his dive.

Noting James' nearly heartbroken demeanor, Cale tried to offer his sympathies. "Erm... I'm sure he'll get it next time, Potter. Our bloke didn't snatch it either, yeah?"

"Potter," Scorpius drawled.

Cale winced, knowing what was coming.

"What was that about a galleon? For every one of us, wasn't it? Shall we be expecting you to clean out your pockets before or after your team's humiliated?"
