September 28, 2020 - A Meeting of Friends
Who: Neville, Luna
Where: Divination Tower
When: Eveningish time. After classes are over.
Rating: G? XD
Invasion:

Status: Closed / Finished
Summary: Neville makes what he finds to be an exhausting trip up to the Divination classroom to visit with Luna. They have a fun chat about old times, and kids today during which they feel old.

He'd been busy, sure, but that was no excuse to neglect his friendship duties, and so when Neville remembered, and got a free moment, he put away his work for the evening and started up the long winding staircase to the Divination Tower. He wasn't certain that Luna would be up there – and if she wasn't, he would be rather annoyed at himself for wasting a trip – but he thought it was a good enough place to start.

Though he regretted the decision not to check her office first when he reached the top of the tower, somewhat winded – it really had been too long since his last visit. Tugging on the trapdoor – just to get it open, not to actually climb it yet – Neville gasped a bit for air, leaning against a nearby wall.

Peering up the stairs, he weakly called out, "Luna?"

She'd levitated herself a bit, trying to reach something on the very tip top of one of the shelves. When she heard someone call out, she lost concentration as she glanced over and hit the ground a touch harder than she'd meant to, the force of it causing her to tumble backwards onto her behind.

"Bugger," she said, tone wistful despite her actual words. And then, "Yes?"

Getting up, she dusted her hands off on her robes before beginning to brush off her hind end as well, wandering over to the trap door.

Okay. Well, if she was actually up there, he supposed that he could brave a few more steps, and with a sigh he started to climb the trap door.

"You know, you really should give some consideration to relocating," he said, chuckling slight in spite of being winded as he reached the top. He gave an over dramatic exhale to further prove his point. "Do you walk that? Every day?" he asked somewhat incredulously.

She smiled, glad to see an old friend.

"Of course," she agreed, "As do all my students. Apparently you could do with a bit more of that sort of thing." She chuckled a little bit. "It's good to see you, Neville."

And it really was. It wasn't often she got to see her old schoolmates, especially since most of them were not actually in the school like she was.

He chuckled once. "It's good to see you as well, Luna," he said. He was taking deep breaths in attempt to stop his heart from pounding quite so fiercely in his chest. He smiled warmly to her. "I haven't seen much of you since the start of term, and I thought we could use a chance..." he paused, breathing deep again, "...to catch up. Good gracious am I ever out of shape," he said, amused.

He was exaggerating the severity of his lack of air, to be certain - but not by much. He really had thought it had been a long climb.

"You should visit me more often," she pointed out helpfully, "Then you wouldn't be quite so out of shape." Arms extended toward him, Luna embraced Neville lightly before stepping back. "Really, you shouldn't have waited so long. Of course, I suppose the same should be said of me."

She could, of course, have visited him. Between one thing and another, she seemed to have misplaced the time in which to do this.

He returned her embrace, hugging her tightly to him and rubbing her back for a moment before he released her. He waved off her attempt to take some of the blame, and chuckled as he said, "No, you are absolutely right - clearly, I am more at fault because I was in need of the exercise. I'll try to keep that in mind and make this trip more often." He paused, thoughtfully. "I suppose I'll have to make a day of it, gather together picnic baskets and bring my hiking boots..."

His eyes sparkled with merriment, but he didn't keep up the joke for long. "So how have you been? First month go all right?"

"About the same as usual," she replied with a slight smile, "Things have already started to go missing. I think I've gone through five crystal balls already."

Thankfully, Luna usually planned ahead for these things and made a habit of keeping spares. The problem, really, was that she could never catch them at it. And it always came back by the end of the year, so there was rarely any harm done.

He raised a perfectly innocent eyebrow.

"Can you not just look into another and see where they are?" he teased lightly. But he supposed he shouldn't argue - he'd never really grasped the concept of Divination. It was all just convoluted cloud shapes to him. Though he'd seen it have fairly accurate results before, so he wasn't going to argue with it.

She chuckled, shaking her head.

"It's not that easy, Neville," she replied, "I can't force things to reveal themselves. How has your month been? And your summer, I suppose. I didn't see you much over the break."

She'd spent her time at home with the boys mostly. She did worry now, when she didn't hear of them about the school. It meant either they were doing very well and she needn't be concerned or they were into a great deal of trouble and this was the calm before the storm.

"Busy," he said with a smile, brushing off one of the seats before resting in it. "Herbology never seems to be anyone's favourite class," he said, mildly amused. "I think it might have something to do with the fact that some of the plants have a tendency to spit," he said with a grin.

He frowned a bit. "Although," he said. "I swear that some of the students are calling me 'Professor Batman'. Not sure what that is about..."

"I'm sure it's something us older folk aren't meant to understand," she assured him with a smile, "I, fortunately, appear to have managed to keep the same nickname I've always had."

Of course, it was rather different when being referred to as 'Loony' by those you were meant to be teaching, but she had the ability to dock points now and that had proved a decent deterrent if nothing else. Still, she heard whispers well enough in the hallways.

He chuckled, and shook his head a bit. "Well, at least you know whom they're referring to when they say it," he offered with an amused smirk. "I always thought you liked the name in school," he admitted. "Well. Not liked, per say, but you never made a big fuss about it."

He grinned at her sheepishly. "Suppose I was a bit daft?" he finished.

After all, she could have just been pretending that it didn't bother her.

"Not daft," she countered, "It never bothered me; you of all people should know that I never paid much attention to what other people thought of me."

She smiled sweetly to him, rather glad he'd stopped by. She didn't want to reminisce, really, but it was good to have a familiar face.

"Did you ever marry, Neville?" she asked, tilting her head slightly, "I can't recall now."

He struggled to reign in his laughter at her question, attempting an indignant expression - it was very difficult for him with how amused he was, though.

"Luna, I'm hurt!" he said, laughter escaping a little through his nose. "I did in fact get married, and you were at the ceremony. Don't you recall giving that lecture on how the cake should not have been made with... with... Dingleshrooms, because they cause mass hallucinations?"

Unable to hold it in any longer, he chortled openly, mock wiping away tears of merriment before he shook his head. "No, I never married," he told her. "I don't think I've ever even been close to considering it," he added.

Luna was nonplussed, eyebrows raised as she regarded him.

"Dingleshrooms do cause hallucinations," she pointed out, "but I don't see why anyone would put them in a cake." She did manage a smile at his amusement, though. "No girl caught your eye, Neville? That's unfortunate."

She, of course, was happily married with two children. Two children about whom she was suspicious since she hadn't heard word.

He chuckled. "Some have caught my eye," he admitted, eyes shining with secrecy. "But nothing that I was really willing to pursue to that extent. I believe that if it's meant to be... you'll know it."

He paused, thoughtfully. "Was it that was with you and Rolf?"

Perhaps he was getting it wrong, and there were no magical fireworks when you met the right person, but rather it was a bond that developed with time and closeness. Was love the sort of thing that snuck up on you, or smacked you in the face at first glance? He grinned. Maybe it was both.

"Rolf understood me," she replied, "I think he was the first person to truly just accept me for who I am." She smiled fondly before realizing that could be insulting. "Not that you lot didn't try, but ... well, I suppose there was a reason I was often referred to as 'Loony'."

Shrugging to that, she let it drop; she truly didn't mind the name, despite her words just then. Still, it stood to be mentioned, and now she had.

Neville nodded, understanding. "There's a difference between accepting someone and their personality quirks, and understanding someone," he agreed. He'd always tried, but he'd never fully understood Luna, or the difference between when she was joking and when she was being serious - but he supposed that was just his gullible nature and Luna's cleverness clashing.

But still, he always thought that he had accepted her for who she was. He wondered if she thought that he hadn't, or if - as he said - she'd meant she hadn't been understood.

Or maybe she was right, and he'd never been able to fully accept Luna. He thought about that for a moment curiously.

"Hmm," she agreed, "I do appreciate that you lot accepted me, though. So many people didn't."

She smiled to him and eased over to press a chaste kiss to his cheek in appreciation. Really, she had enjoyed her friendship with Neville, and still did.

Gaze swinging back to the shelf she'd been attempting to get something down from, she glanced to Neville speculatively.

"Are you taller than me?" she asked with a small smile.

He followed her gaze to the shelf, and looked back at her, rising up slowly.

"Something out of reach?" he asked, frowning up at the shelf and wondering what she was reaching for. He reasoned that he was a bit taller than she was, and might be able to reach it. If not, he could always summon it off the shelf, he supposed.

Though he reasoned that Luna probably would've already tried that. Maybe it was something breakable that he shouldn't be summoning.

"What am I looking for?" he asked as he peered at the shelf, trying to decide how he was going to go about getting the item down.

"Now that's a good question, isn't it?" she mused, trying to remember why she'd been levitating in the first place, "Ah yes, my seventh level Divination book. I put it up there so no one could take it and made it so it couldn't be accioed. The trouble is that now I can't reach it."

She frowned slightly; clearly this plan was in need of some tweaking.

"Did you include a plan for how you were going to fetch it afterwards?" he asked innocently. He thought about how he was going to go about this for a moment before he opted to bring a chair over so that he could stand on it - he figured it was easier than trying to levitate.

He searched the top of the shelf for the textbook, pulling the one that seemed the most likely out and holding it up for Luna, chair wobbling slightly. He gripped the shelf for balance. "This it?" he asked weakly.

"That's it," she agreed with a light smile, "Though I suppose if I'd been thinking properly I could have done that bit myself. I'll have to come up with a better plan for next time. Thank you."

Though she supposed if he was here, it was nice of him to help and was working with that.

He smiled a bit, and tossed the book to the floor, the chair wobbling slightly again as he tried to ease himself off of it and onto the floor. He rather hoped he didn't bring the entire shelving unit down with him.

"Well, at least the students couldn't reach it up there either," he reasoned with a grin, reaching down to the floor to pick up the book he'd dropped - if she hadn't already picked it up. He rather hoped there hadn't been anything breakable or anything inside of it. He paused thoughtfully. "Did you try a sealed cabinet?" he asked curiously. Maybe one of the pranksters had figured out how to break into it.

"I thought that might be too obvious," she admitted, "The students now are a great deal craftier than we ever were. I believe that may be saying something."

She smiled to him and moved to inspect the book. Not that she expected any damage, but you could never be too careful.

"Well that's all right then," she decided after a moment before sitting on the desk itself, legs dangling down.

Perhaps not a proper way to sit, but her preferred position nonetheless.

Neville chuckled, moving to return the chair from where he moved it before sitting down again.

"You might be right," he said with a grin. "Dangle a locked chest in front of some of them, and even if they don't care what's it it, some of them seem to consider it a personal challenge to do everything they can to pry it open," he peered up at the shelf. "Guess that's the only way. You'll have to owl me the next time you need the book to go up or down, so that I know to start on my three day hike up those stairs."

He smirked at her teasingly.

"I'll make the picnic basket myself," she promised with a slight smirk of her own, kicking dangling feet as she regarded him before looking about. "Do you ever miss it, Neville?" she asked, "The sense of adventure we once had in these halls. It's hard to believe any of it ever happened at all."

It really was, from this perspective, she thought. But then, that had been many moons ago.

He paused, and it was on the tip of his tongue to say, 'no,' but... well. He was talking to Luna.

"Sometimes," he admitted quietly, looking at the ground. It sounded - to him - like a horrible thing to say. He missed being constantly threatened from all sides, being constantly fearing for his life and the lives of his friends? "But... it was less the adventure for me, and more the way it... brought everyone together," he said queitly. "There's less of that here now. They'll... never understand the way a war can bring people together. With everyone fighting for the same cause."

He sighed, looking away, "And let's hope they never have to."

He turned his gaze back to Luna. "How about you? Do you miss it?"

"Sometimes," she echoed, "But like you said, not so much the danger as the camaraderie. It was nice to have a group of friends like that."

Not that she didn't have friends now, but it was different somehow. She didn't have the same ties she'd had back then. But these things changed as you got older, she thought. It was unlikely it would ever be the same.

He was going to tease her about how they were still her friends, but he understood what she meant - it wasn't the same now that they were older, and all living elsewhere, instead of just being at Hogwarts. Heck, it had taken him a month just to brave the stairs to come up and see her.

"Odd," he said quietly. "That times of such danger should bring people that close together, and times of peace should bring them apart. I'd imagine that if things grew difficult again, similar relations would develop between the students and professors here. Perhaps we would rekindle old friendships that had died..."

For a moment, he fancied that if there were another war, that he'd somehow be called on to help out with it, like before - but he supposed that was silly of him. Harry likely had other people that he could call on, and wouldn't really have use for a Herbology professor. He smiled sadly.

"It is a bit odd, isn't it?" she agreed, "But I suppose it's someone else's turn to have adventures now, right? We're just the professors now."

Because really, when had they ever included the professors in their shenanigans, save Dumbledore? Hardly ever, really, except where they got in the way. Well, she'd just have to do a good job of getting in the way.

He chuckled. 'Just the professors' seemed like such an understatement to him now, looking in from the outside. How much had McGonagall done for them during the reign of the Carrows? And how much had Snape done for them, in hindsight? Or done for Harry, at least.

But he knew what she meant - it had been the students who had been in the real thick of things, forging the relationships, honing their skills. But he didn't think they'd exactly be left out of the fun. Their fun would just be a slight different.

"Right," he agreed, an amused expression on his face. "And perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps they can develop relationships that are just as strong without the... ah. Questionable benefit of war," he grinned.

Neville chuckled softly. "Indeed!" he said, making a fist and pounding it lightly on the table. "They have it far too easy. We should assign additional homework assignments and be tougher on the pranksters to make up for it!"

He turned his head to peer over his shoulder as if expecting to see a student who was going to start spreading the rumour that Longbottom and Scamander were plotting extra homework assignments to.... make up for the fact that these students hadn't suffered through a war. He laughed out loud at the ludicrousness of the situation.

"By that logic they're children will be completely prepared for the next war," Neville pointed out, finding it very difficult to keep his laughter contained long enough to string the words together.

"Ah, but heroics skip a generation," he said, as the thought came back to him. "So perhaps our professors did not talk about us this way, as we were heroic? That still leaves us free to talk about kids today. With their pranks and their attitudes," he stuck his nose in the air. "Good thing we were never like that."

He thought he might be talking himself in circles now. But logic had flown out the window quote sometime ago, so he went with it anyway.

She hopped down from the desk like a woman half her age might do.

"Guess I haven't changed that much, right?" she ventured with a grin, "I mean, I'm now head of the 'claws, but other than that, I'm still the same as I was when I was but a slip of a girl."

He smiled at her warmly. "I think you've changed," he shared with a smile. He certainly had an easier time understanding her now. Though he supposed that could just as easily be contributed to the fact that he'd changed.

He did wonder when he should go, start to make the trip back downstairs to his room, but he reasoned that going down would be a whole lot easier than the trip up had been, so he wasn't overly concerned with it. Though maybe Luna wanted to go to bed at some point, and he should leave her to that.
