Diagon Alley Shopping
Who: Hans Erwan, Tristan Moore
When: August 22, 2020 - afternoon.
Where: Diagon Alley, Apothecary
Status: Complete
Summary: Hans heads out to Diagon Alley to get his school shopping out of the way. First up is the apothecary where Hans immediately regrets his heightened sense of smell. Tristan roams over to have a chat and teach him the fine art of picking out working ingredients for potions. The two joke around a bit more before Hans finally decides to move off and finish up his shopping.

Han took a deep breath through his nose before tapping the appropriate blocks on the stone wall behind the Leakey Cauldron. As the passage into Diagon Alley appeared, he relaxed a little, feeling less tense than he had ever since the distraction of the last Tri-Wizard task had ended.

He couldn’t begin to explain how freeing it was to step back into an obviously magical environment. This was the longest time he had ever spent around the muggle population – he still didn’t know how he was supposed to act around them. Luckily, his thick accent had acted as enough of an explanation for his strange behavior to most muggles.

Shaking that thought off, Hans struck out down the street, making straight for the apothecary first. He had struggled a bit deciphering the letter from Hogwarts (something he took as a bad sign), but from what he could gather, he would need to buy several different ingredients for the Potions class this term.

The blond wrinkled his nose as he stepped into the shop and the strength of the smell hit him.

Had it always smelled so terrible, or was it some side effect of the lycanthropy? Perhaps the warmer air of Britain caused the ingredients to have a stronger odor…?

Whichever it was, Hans stood awkwardly in the door for a moment with his arm lifted to cover his nose in a vain attempt to block the smell.

"Interesting enough, but I find anything on Wolfsbane fascinating. Especially tips, tricks, and shortcuts." He paused before answering the next question.

"Not all of it, no. They make you get extra for when you muck it up," he said, grinning. "But ... yeah. These are just the ... non-standard things that they don't usually keep at school. Or keep enough of." Or something. He'd never really gotten it, either - especially since there'd always been stores of the things for students who had 'forgotten' to go shopping for the ingredients.

Tris continued to rifle through the leaves, pulling out the ones that looked good and setting them aside. Since he reasoned Hans was going to need them, too, he pulled out more than he would have for himself, separating them into two piles.

"Strange." Hans shook his head to himself before scanning down his list for a few more things.

There were some things that his mother had sent in a package earlier that week. It was just the things that weren't easy to send by owl that he needed. Beetles' eyes, bay-tree leaves, a new set of scales.

Noting the two piles, Hans grinned slightly and crossed back over, scales in hand. "Vot? Are you an expert on selecting ingredients, Tristan?"

At least one of them was. Hans was fairly certain he was what they called 'rubbish' at it. Knowing which ones worked best required reading the instructions for potions, didn't it? He didn't have the patience.

Tris grinned slightly. "Fair sight better than your foreign arse is. You wouldn't know a proper bay-tree leaf if it stood up and did the rhumba for you."

Of course, if he ever saw a leaf doing that, he'd turn tail and head the other way, but that was neither here nor there. "I can put 'em all back if you like, let you sort out your own, but ... we had to work with them a bit last year. You want the ones that still have a bit of green on them, and aren't all brown. And certainly not the dark dark brown ones."

"You may put them back," Hans allowed, maintaining a straight face. "I vill just take yours to use. It von't cause me any problems."

He had to grin then, however. It was doubtful the professor would look kindly on his filching items from Tristan's bag in the middle of every class. It was amusing to think about, however.

"Vot do the brown ones do?" Hans' forehead wrinkled as he attempted to recall the word. "Kerfloo?"

It sort of sounded like a sneeze to him...

"Kerflooey," Tris said, emphasizing the bit at the end. "And no. The really brown ones are kind of ... inert. They'll work, but not as well as the ones with some life still in them."

He fished around in the barrel, coming up with a good and a bad example. "See?" he said as he held up the dark brown one, which was drier than the others he had in the piles. "It crumbles. Which would probably be good for potions calling for crumbles of bay-tree leaves, but ... ours wouldn't."

Not that he'd read ahead, or anything.

"It's logical," Hans agreed, tilting his head slightly to one side as he studied the differences. He might need to know this little fact next year. Or if for some reason he lost his purchases of today.

He doubted having the proper ingredients would help him much in the long run, but all the same he'd rather not buy a bunch of stuff that would be binned after the first class.

"I am afraid I do not share the interest for potions," Hans revealed after a second, rubbing the back of his neck as he frowned. "I haff no doubt that I von't be remembering vot that is even called tomorrow."

Tristan paused to look properly horrified at Hans.

"You aren't ... interested in ... potions?" Tris gripped at his chest as he staggered backwards. "Why this is ... all news to me. I thought surely you were the sort that just ... adored and loved everything there was about potion-making."

He leaned dramatically on a shelf (after making sure he wasn't going to break anything on it in his dramatics), shaking his head sadly. "Oh, Hans, Hans. You foreign blokes and your ... non-love for potions. How can I go on under the weight of this revelation?"

Hans struggled to fight down a grin at Tristan's antics. "It is the cold air," he explained slowly. "None of us enjoy potions. I haff trouble even thinking of them without being filled with non-love."

Pausing to fight down the urge to laugh for another moment, Hans gestured vaguely. "You vill haff to soldier on. It is the only vay, I am thinking."

Tristan shook his head sadly as he pushed away from the shelf, righting a set of scales that he'd pushed askew. "I just don't know about you, Hans. Cold air, huh?"

He sighed dramatically. "Well, all right. I'll try to keep my chin up and continue on, but ... I just don't know if I can handle sharing a school with someone who doesn't ah ... love potions the way we all do."

"Perhaps I vill pretend to haff the same love for potions," Hans decided, smirking slightly a he took stock of what he had to buy and compared it to the list. "I vouldn't vant to cause everyone distress. I vill follow your example if ve share a class. Vot is the vord? Mimic?"

Yet another thing he doubted would be appreciated. Was copying everything another student did against the rules? He supposed he would find out.

"So you're going to shadow me? Stalk me? Do everything that I do? You realize, right, by admitting that, you're opening yourself to a world of pranks?" Tristan grinned wolfishly. "I mean, I'm not usually above taking advantage of situations to turn them into pranks, and ... really, just because you're from the great white North or whatever, that isn't going to save you. I'll use you just like I do -- wait, that's not coming out right."

Tris continued to grin though before he waved it off - in the off chance Hans was taking him seriously. "Nah, it's fine. I mean, they do say imitation is the highest form of flattery, so I would be honored, Hans Erwan, if you would mock me."

Pause. "Mimic me."

Longer pause. "Whichever."

"Stalk?" Hans grinned, unable to avoid ducking his head and laughing quietly as Tristan continued on. "Very good. I haff been inspired. I vill try this stalking. It vill be interesting vhen there is the danger of pranks."

It would certainly mean he didn't have to spend the entire year holed up in the library translating his homework more accurately.

"I vill vait to do the stalking at Hogwarts, however. I think I am done here." Hans paused as well to consider his list once more before nodding to himself. He needed a new set of robes now that he would be in a different school, and there were textbooks to consider, but they would all be much easier to deal with after the smell of the apothecary.

"Right." Tris slid one of the piles of bay-tree leaves toward him, if he was on his way out. "It was good seeing you again, and best of luck stalking me at Hogwarts. Lan will probably be very put-out, since that's his job at the moment, but perhaps I can distract him away with a girl."

He paused. "Or by running interference against Madison while I'm setting up pranks she won't approve of."

Which made him pause. "Did you get sorted yet? Or are you going to have to stand up there with all the firsties?"

Hans made a face as he scooped the leaves up. "I vos planning to ask that in my next Owl. I vould hope I von't be made to stand. It seems... demeaning."

That wasn't the actual word he was looking for, but it was close enough. It wouldn't bother Hans to stand in front of the Great Hall at all... it was just the idea of standing up there with first years.

"I am curious vot one I vill be sorted into."

"Me too. Hopefully you'll be a 'claw," he said. Mostly because then he could keep Ravenclaw the only house with werewolves in it.

It would suck to have a Slytherin werewolf or something.

"I can't imagine them making you stand up there. You'd probably scare all the firsties." He paused. "You should, if they make you. Tell them you got skipped and have been standing there for six years."

He paused, then beamed. "No. Tell them you couldn't do the required entry spell, and until you can, you can't actually be a student."

Hans coughed quickly to hide another laugh. Keeping a straight face was becoming a skill of the past at this point.

"Vot sort of influence are you?" he asked, biting down another laugh. "You are the one I'm to mimic? I vill be expelled by All Hallow's Eve."

Hans blinked, considering that for a moment before grinning slightly. "Perhaps that is vot I vill tell them. I vos expelled and I am now re-applying."

Tris blinked. "I thought that was our goal? Getting you expelled?" He grinned. "But that is an excellent plan - though then the firsties will think they can get expelled and come back."

He shook his head. "Anyway, I'm a very bad influence. Lan's worse, though I'm sure you knew that."

"Vos he?" Hans tilted his head to one side, tapping his chin in thought. "I vill be reminded on the first, yeah? Ve shall see vhich of the two of you is worse."

But on that note, he really needed to go get measured for his robes before anymore time passed chatting.

"I haff been entertained, but I suppose I haff to be going." Hans shook his list for emphasis before rolling his eyes. "There are not parents to do useless chores for me here."

"You should hire a first year to do it for you," he said, nodding. "But all right. In that case, I'll see you 'round. On the train if not after. Though you should be in my house, really. I can't very well be competing with a wolf in another house."

He winked to Hans before he turned to continue his own shopping, leaving the boy to take off as he would.

"You vill haff to start vishing now. Vot vith mine being the vinning house, vhichever it might be."

Hans laughed quietly to himself before gathering up his supplies and heading off to purchase them with a farewell wave.

Ravenclaw was the witty house, wasn't it? Hans wasn't sure how much of a fit he was on wit. He would find out when September rolled around.
