When Relm had first received the news that she was going to be part of the actual assault team, she was stunned. She didn't understand her reaction very well, considering how hard she'd been expecting to have to fight to even get to go. She would have been happy to sit in the room with the other sorceresses. Well, she wouldn't have been happy, but she would have settled for the allowance. Now she knew that she was expected to do greater things than that. She was a sorceress and it was time she started acting like one. A real one. She talked big and when it came down to it, she was certain she'd be able to handle whatever came her way, but that didn't stop her from getting a little nervous. She'd studied under Edea and that crazy bitch was strong. The woman had the kind of charisma that left her audience in awe. As if to underscore that, the screens that loomed overhead cast her larger than life. Her bold words and cool even tone almost caused her to shiver. This woman knew what she was doing. This woman knew what she wanted. For a moment, Relm thought, This woman is going to kill us all. When the hell had everything started getting so fucking serious? No one expected to see any kind of war or problems ever again. No one actually acted like it outside of Dona. The sorceresses she'd trained under had never emphasized it, or maybe she hadn't stuck around enough to learn. She knew the moment they'd hit the ground that it wasn't a training exercise. She'd known before then, but it had become real. She was actually there. It was actually happening. They weren't in the training center fighting monsters for practice. Even if they were under Edea's control, they were fighting people. People were dying all around her, and she had to try and keep that from happening to her allies. She'd been all smiles and boasts to her friends, but as she moved closer her expression grew more grim. Paint brush in hand, she didn't just copy the SOLDIER as she had done men at the garden. No, they moved. They fell into rank, and they laid on the damage their models had dealt out. She had to focus on them, as she did it. The only problem was that the usual time she had between them being confused or scared from what was happening wasn't there. She had to paint faster, bringing them to life at a pace she wasn't sure she could keep up. She had to remember that the cadets were there. Dona was there. She was not alone. If only she could have held onto that thought when Edea swung the SOLDIER in front of her. The sight of the bullet catching him right between the eyes had caused her to pause. She didn't know why she processed it any different than the ones they'd been cutting through to get to the room that held the rogue sorceress. Maybe it was just because she'd so casually tossed the life away. She hadn't even blinked. She looked bored. The scene played over and over when she tried to close her eyes to rest. Relm had tried to bury herself in helping others. There was much healing to be done and much talking to do. She had to listen to new strategies being drafted. She had to remember so many things. So many things she'd forgotten so easily had begun to surface, others laid right out of her reach. The worst if it was that Seifer was dead. He was dead, but they had to keep going. The shift in the mood of the group was palpable, but somehow she managed to keep up her usual attitude. She wondered if she was even human. The scariest thought was the idea of turning out like Edea one day. Were all the sorceresses capable of doing so? She didn't believe she could ever callously toss a life away the way she did. Would she actually be able to take a life. She'd aided others in doing so, hadn't she? The memory of battle chilled her to the bone. She would be going back in the morning. Maybe it'd be easier the next day. She wasn't sure she wanted it to be easier. She didn't want to become numb. She didn't want to share Edea's dead gaze. Her pilgrimage was almost done. She had expected to just get out of it and go about being a sorceress and being fun and amazing for the rest of her life. It had never occurred to her just how much responsibility would come with the title. Yes, she'd be in charge of many different things including training new sorceresses behind her, but she had never expected to use her power in an actual battle situation. The fight put her in a situation, which she was not accustomed to. It faced her off against enemies she, for once, wasn't sure she could defeat. Dona's presence had been the anchor that kept her head on straight. She wouldn't rely on her again. She would not become a burden. She would become stronger. Tomorrow. Tomorrow she would be stronger. |
