Day 32: Intro
Who: Sarah Williams & Jareth
What: Sarah arrives
When: Day 32, just before sunrise
Where: Garden
Status: Complete
Rating: PG at the moment

It was so quiet that Sarah could have heard a pin drop. If she had been paying attention. She was more focused on something else. Something that had settled in her stomach like an icy ball of dread. Her knuckles were white as she held the blankets tightly to her chest, eyes wide, staring straight up at the ceiling.

It's finally happening.

The clock was ticking in the hallway. The clock that had been there 3 years ago. The one that was safely at her father's house a thousand miles away with Irene and Toby and their perfectly normal, ignorant lives. She had no clocks in this apartment. None that could tick, that is. Yet there it was. Tick. Tick. Tick. Tick.

He's finally coming back for me.

Something about the room changed. It wasn't as dark anymore. Light was creeping in through the blinds? No, it looked more like cracks in the walls of the room. Sarah sat up straight as an arrow in the bed with a muffled cry in her throat. Tears began to stream down her cheeks and she opened her mouth to scream.

Then the garden.

At first she thought she must have passed out or had been dreaming of being in her own apartment a few moments ago. Because this garden looked exactly like the one in which she had been practicing her lines all those years ago on the night she first visited the labyrinth. Upon inspection she saw she was indeed wearing the long, white dress she had used for playacting then and the wreath of flowers in her long, dark hair.

It was all a dream? All of it?

"Am I fifteen again? That's not f-" and she stopped herself, feeling the old petulance rising and the fear subsiding. And as it did she realized that this garden was nothing like the one she had practiced in. In fact, it was so dissimilar that she reached up to be sure she hadn't imagined the wreath of flowers in her hair. But it was still there.

"Where am I?" she whispered.

Jareth pursed his lips and simply looked at her for a long moment. It was something he seemed to be doing a lot of, actually. After all, though he'd been alive for a long time, much of that had been spent simply doing the same thing. This was new, and it was taking him awhile to adjust. Really, he wasn't even used to the idea of Mirage yet, and here he was, having another major thing to become accustomed to.

"I see." He thought about that for a few seconds. "We could try to avoid each other." But he'd been around for a few days, and... "I don't think you fully grasp how small this realm is. It would be completely impossible to not see each other at all..." Especially since they were living so close to each other. He didn't see how it could work. Although perhaps part of that was simply that he didn't want to.

But apparently she wasn't finished, and she could clearly still surprise him. Most mortals couldn't. He'd studied them too long. She, however, was clearly different. Which was something that he should be used to, and wasn't. Well, what was he to say to this latest comment? Coffee... a drink he'd been nearly addicted to while working as an actor, while masquerading as a human. And a chance to work this out. There was really no other answer to give.

"Very well." After all, it couldn't be any stranger than bowling. The memory made him shudder in disgust. "I will need to change, though." He simply could not see drinking coffee as he was. "And I believe you mentioned you wanted to change as well. So, let's go." He snapped again and his room key disappeared. He turned and faced the nearest entrance out of the main building.

Sarah hadn’t thought he could surprise her anymore. At least not with who he was on a personal level. She felt her jaw drop as he agreed to coffee and a chat. He was willing to accept the possibility of negotiating some sort of truce? Nonplussed by his sudden reasonability, she felt herself start to giggle nervously. She recovered quickly though and hid a smile in her sleeve again, giving a little cough and turning to follow him to the door of the building.

"Um, yes, we're a bit over-dressed for coffee," she said lightly, a clear note of amusement in her voice.

Somehow, in the few minutes they'd spent together, she'd managed to partially humanize (to herself, at least) this being she'd feared for years. Part of her still felt raw and fearful in his presence but she was starting to get the hang of holding it in; playing those particular cards close to the vest. She thought that if he saw she was still a bit frightened he might be inclined to taunt or intimidate her further. Let him wonder if she was a little nuts for her change in attitude. Maybe she was.

It had worked so far to simply act as though she was not afraid. Acting. A milieu they both could understand. He was theatrical with his illusions and she with her hidden fears and compartmentalizing away the frustration she felt with having been suddenly ripped away from her life -- again. Not that it had been much of a life. Therapy. Medication. Suicide watches. How stupid she had been for so long! Maybe what she’d needed all along was to literally face her "demons." Here she was doing just that. Strange.

She wondered what their conversation would be like. She wondered if she could drop her guard enough to actually make headway toward making peace with him but keep enough back so as not to push him into anger. That he was unable to control anything about this place made her feel more at ease so perhaps it would be fine. Perhaps things would work and they could live peaceably on this strange Planet even if they never spoke again afterward. She frowned deeply at that thought. She couldn’t force things to go quickly. It might be slow going. He did still see her as the destroyer of his world. This could be very tricky.

"What did you get yourself into, Sarah?" she asked under her breath. It was going to be another dance.

Oh, good. He could still surprise her, as well. Although he realized that it wasn't going to be useful to think of this as a constant power struggle, with whoever had the most power winning, it was hard to change the way he saw things. But he had to admit, she had a good point. They were going to be together forever, not long at all a long time. It made sense to try and work something out...no matter how unused he was to negotiating.

"Just a little, yes." He smiled at her, unavoidably affected by her giggling, as nervous as it obviously was. What did she have to be nervous of? He couldn't think of what, really, except that she'd been afraid of him in the past and such things didn't go away too easily. But that was all guesswork on his part, and the truth was, he really couldn't know.

He led the way to the nearby door, and glanced around to get his bearings. This was not his realm, after all, which he knew as well as the back of his own hand. Finally orienting himself, he realized they'd have to walk halfway around the building to get to their dormitory. Oh well. He certainly wouldn't comment on it, because he really didn't want her to think of him as lost. So he just set off, glancing over his shoulder every once in awhile to see if she was still there. His black-booted feet made little noise on the soft grass, which was still wet with dew from the night. It was, after all, still very early in the morning.

In short order, they arrived at a building that looked much like any of the other buildings around. This one, however, was their new home. With no flourish or fanfare whatsoever, as if he didn't want to call attention to it, he held the door open for her and waited as she entered.

"Down this hallway. Yours is before mine, so I will drop you off and then meet you in a short time."

His smiles seemed genuine now and that was a new twist in this being thrown together against their will by a lonely Planet. She had never in her wildest musings ever thought he'd truly smile at her. It was best not to smile too widely back so she nibbled her lower lip thoughtfully instead as she followed him through doors and nature.

She followed him.

She would never have thought that possible either but then her entire experience with Jareth had been in the realm of the not quite possible. And so if it all of this was possible -- why not a truce? She tried not to hold much hope for it to end well but she couldn't help herself. She was smiling again as he held the door open for her without ceremony other than chivalry and she walked through. Then she led the way to her own door, glancing only once over her shoulder to assure herself he was still there. She stopped with her hand on the knob of the door and turned to face him.

"Really? Coffee? You're serious about this?" she asked, leaning back against the door and looking up at him searchingly.

"Oh, Sarah." His voice was almost... teasing? But not in a cruel way, which was a surprise even to him. "Surely after all we've been through, you don't think I would," A slight pause, "Stand you up?" It had to be odd for her to hear him using such an expression, he figured. After all, he hadn't exactly talked to her in detail about his life as the actor Jeremy.

He stopped as she put her hand on the doorknob, turning to face her. He had been so sure she hated him, but if that was the case, why would she want to have coffee with him? Working out a truce wasn't really necessary with someone if you simply wanted to ignore them, and the idea had been hers in the first place. This day was getting more and more surprising.

"Yes, I'm serious." He nodded slightly. "Just... when you see me, you may not recognize me right away. So I will wear this," He held up a necklace that hung around his neck on a black leather thong, a sort of a crescent moon shaped thing, "Look for this, and you will know me." He turned away, stopped, and turned back. "And remember, Sarah, all you have to do is concentrate on what you want, and it will appear. So when you decide what you want your room to look like, you can make it happen. Right here, 10 minutes? I'll see you then."

With that being said, he headed down the hallway toward his own room. He would change, as he had told her, and then meet her. He had no idea where this would end up going, but it would be interesting, of that he was sure. He keyed open his door and disappeared inside. Getting changed wouldn't take very long, and soon he was ready to go meet her by her room again.

"N-no," she said. "I suppose you wouldn't. Like you said, we can't easily avoid each other here."

The dance had definitely begun. She was twirling now, trying to follow his lead. It was all so confusing all of a sudden. He was teasing her -- gently! -- and giving her promises. Well, he'd given her promises before and he'd always kept them, though she hadn't always liked them. It was a constant surprise with him today. She was almost grateful for the years she'd had to take a step back from it all and look at it from every possible angle. Sure she'd feared him (wasn't that the theme of her life?) but she'd also understood certain things much better after she'd thought long hours about them.

Silently she nodded to him, taking in the crescent moon necklace he showed her. Her brow furrowed as he walked away. More strange steps; more confusion. Why would she not recognize him when she saw him next? Was that metaphorical? Surely not since he'd made the precaution of showing her the necklace.

Frowning thoughtfully she turned her key in the lock and briefly attempted to picture her room as she'd want to see it when the door opened. It was nearly impossible to picture anything other than her childhood room. It kept flashing into her thoughts the harder she tried not to think of it. So giving up and shrugging off everything heavy and pensive, she opened the door and stepped into the room she desired least in the world.

However much she dislike the room, the dresser drawers and closet were filled with enough variety that she was quickly clothed in a plain green t-shirt to match her eyes, jeans and sneakers. She was so grateful to be out of the childish dress and the wreath of flowers that she hoped the room would disappear it while she was gone. Tossing her hair with her fingers to remove any extra flower petals she made it back into the hall before the ten minutes were up.

Glancing in the mirror, it would be very hard to tell that he was even the same being as he had been before. Even he was startled as he gave himself a quick glance, and then shook his head. But this guise was really more appopriate for something like going for coffee. Even if he wasn't quite sure he liked the look he had. It was so boring.

Oh well. Soon enough, he was pushing the door open and stepping through it. Down the hallway, he could see that Sarah was already waiting. Slowly, he approached her and stood a couple of feet away. He, too, was wearing jeans, and a normal, casual button-up shirt in black, with red accents. The strange black necklace he had shown her before was prominantly displayed, and he hoped she noticed. His long, lion's mane of hair had darkened and was much shorter. But it was still the same face looking at her, more or less. Some of the otherworldly air he'd had about him was gone, but his eyes were the same. He was striking, yes, but not necessarily someone that anyone else would give a second look to.

In short, he was Jeremy, the actor. He smiled just slightly. "I thought this would be more... appropriate for something like coffee."

Sarah glanced up from her thoughts when she heard his voice but she didn't immediately connect it with the face she saw before her. It took her a moment, a couple blinks, to see what he'd been before in what he was now. And there was the medallion. Her eyes widened slightly as she took him in. Her mouth formed a small "o" of surprise. He was so altered that he might have been completely human. An average man in a coffeehouse, perhaps with a book under his arm and regular conversations on his mind.

She wouldn't be fooled into thinking he was just average. Not that he intended her to think that. Just... he was so changed and she felt her cheeks flush as her voice trembled slightly. "So, um, is there an actual place for coffee?"

With her fingers, she brushed a strand of hair from her face. It was a pretense to hide the blush that had risen for no reason she could understand -- or chose to understand at the moment. It was also so she could break the stare she had begun without looking too obviously startled by the change in him.

"Or do we have to, uh, imagine one into existence?" she added with a slight smile.

Jareth couldn't help but be pleased by the fact that she was obviously surprised. Of course, one hardly changed major things about the way they looked if they wanted it to be overlooked. But she had reacted quite gratifyingly, and he was more than a little charmed. He smiled and actually winked at her, acknowledging everything without words, and then he turned back to the door outside.

"No, there's a cafe." He paused and thought for a moment. "Though doubtless if you were to wish for coffee, it would appear wherever you wanted." But for this meeting, it was probably better for it to be in a more neutral place than either of their rooms, and that was the only other option he could see.

With one last look at her, in which he was rather blatently enjoying the way her cheeks looked as the blood rushed to them, he turned and started for the door. In large part, he would admit to himself, this was to keep them both busy and active so she couldn't think twice about this and decide she'd rather hide from him in her room. Not that he could blame her if she did, not really.

"So... how long has it been, Sarah, in your world? You are not 15 anymore." This was blindingly obvious to him.

She followed him to the door and then pushed a step closer so that they were side by side now. No use in appearing as far behind as she felt in all of this.

"Ah no, I'm not 15. I'm almost 19 now. It's been a little over 3 years. But for you it's only been a few days, is that right?" Could that be right? It seemed so strange that he should be so okay after everything when it had all happened for him such a short time ago. Of course, that could just mean she assumed he'd been more invested in the game and his kingdom than he actually had been. That thought alone made her remember to be on some sort of guard around him. He was an illusionist and a charmer. He could possibly be working this to some vengeful advantage for himself.

That she would not allow to show on her face. If he was not planning some kind of ambush or trick, he might be offended with her having thought he was. Again, she danced along a step behind his lead. It was not a power struggle per se but there was certainly a lack on her end. He seemed to have such an advantage because he knew just how to waltz around her. Graceful and confident while she was turbulent and clumsy. And he had always appeared to know her better than he should have been able to know her. It was a little unnerving but she was not going to run away from this opportunity. Not now.

Originally, Jareth had wanted to fall into step with her. But he'd been confused about that desire, because it was so contrary to how he usually was. And then, she'd been nearly jumping out of her skin everytime he'd so much as looked at her, as well. But she'd surprised him, and not unpleasantly, by walking beside him of her own volition. He didn't say anything about it, but he noticed.

"Ah." Still so impossibly young at 18 years old. But, really, to him, all humans were young. Even those on their death beds at the age over 98 were too young for him to even fully understand. So her age wasn't that big of a deal to him, and in fact, he didn't really understand completely what it meant.

Unaware of her thoughts, for he was no mind reader despite how he would like it to appear, he walked beside her to the door and, once more, gallantly held it open. "Yes, to me it has only been a few short days. Right after you..." But surely that was not something to talk about when trying to figure out a truce "Right after that, I was taken here." In fact, he hadn't really had so much as a minute to figure out what was going on. First, he'd been taken, then forced to bowl, and finally she had arrived. He'd been in motion too completely to actually catch up, in truth.

She was gaining confidence of her own now. Taking liberties of language and movement. Pushing the envelope. She knew she was just convincing herself more than anyone of that confidence. But she lifted her chin further, pushed her shoulders back. Just enough to not appear to fold in on herself. Being so overly thin, she always looked small and that wasn't what she wanted right now.

Nibbling her lower lip in a pensive half-smile she passed through the door that he held open for her -- she could get used to this part! She felt so compelled to say something, anything that showed some remorse. It didn't feel right that she should regret anything she'd said or done to him so she consciously had to tell herself to keep the apologies in her head. There might come a time for them but she didn't think it was now. That would be a total reversal of everything she'd thought and felt for years. It didn't make sense and so she would hold her tongue. She just couldn't think of him as an enemy right now, in this moment.

What's wrong with you, Sarah? Why isn't he the enemy anymore?

"I'm - I'm glad that you were not -" she began almost shyly and then stopped, uncomfortable with the sentiment she'd been about to give voice to.

Abruptly she changed the subject. "So did they have coffee in the castle beyond the goblin city?"

Jareth glanced over just the slightest bit, and smiled a little. It could have been mocking, but wasn't. Yes, he had changed a little, what with almost being destroyed. It was probably impossible to pass through an experience like that without being affected somehow. Even a couple of days ago, he would have mocked her mercilessly. Now, though, he just smiled.

Their conversation was falling into a pattern. A quick flurry of words, and then a long silence as they both thought about it. Or that's the way it seemed to him, anyway. There was another long silence as she thought, and he wondered what she was going to say. They were almost at the main building when she spoke again, and he raised an eyebrow and half-turned toward her to listen to her more attentively.

Her words had him smiling, just ever-so-slightly, but in a genuine way. And when was the last time he'd smiled this much, anyway? At least in this sincere sort of manner, that just wasn't something he did so often. Mocking, sardonic expressions, yes. "I'm rather glad of it, myself." And that was enough, he figured. That was all he needed to say.

Jareth shook his head. "No. There was no coffee there. The ground wasn't suitable for coffee bushes." Although, after he'd come back from his time on Earth, he'd sincerely wished there had been. "The cafe is ahead, just around the corner of this building here." He pointed, and figured it would be easier to simply walk around that corner than to go inside and try to find it that way. Ironically, he still tended to get somewhat lost in the many corriders and hallways inside the main building.

"I'm sorry to hear that. Coffee is a very wonderful thing. I couldn't imagine life without it."

As they approached the cafe she found herself feeling a bit anxious. This was it. They were about to have something like the ultimate conversation. She told herself to relax and returned his smile as calmly as she could manage. "I hope they have something strong. No coffee water. I think - well at least I will need it. I was sleeping when this all began. It was the middle of the night and I was in bed."

She walked in the direction he had pointed, keeping stride with him and glancing at his profile periodically. The difference in his appearance was still a little distracting to her.

"I'd even taken something to help me sleep. Valerian root and chamomile tea. I stopped taking the more heavy things they gave me because I never seemed to actually... relax. But sleep isn't all that important when there's coffee."

She knew she was chattering now. They were almost to the door of the cafe and mere feet from the civilities being dropped and business being discussed. She was sure he was a shrewd negotiator and she still wondered if it would be their last conversation. To buy herself another second before it all began, she stepped forward and held the door for him.

"Entrez-vous, s'il vous plait, monsieur."

"No... I missed it while..." But that was enough of that, and the instant he said even that much, he wished he could take it back. Maybe she wouldn't notice. It had been a fairly minor slip. "I'm sure it will be fine." Because, of course, they weren't here for the coffee. He'd seen mortals do this, occupy their hands with food or a drink so that they could talk more freely. It felt less awkward, he supposed, to them.

He wasn't stupid, and he thought he could probably guess why she hadn't been able to sleep. He could be wrong, of course, but he rather thought that most mortals would be rather terrified after having a family member kidnapped, and needing to go rescue them. It happened once, so their illusions of safety were shattered. So he shrugged, knowing that he could put her to sleep if she allowed it, but not knowing how to offer and assuming she would not want anything like that.

Strange, how suddenly she was all words and he couldn't find anything appropriate to say. He didn't want to go into his life as Jeremy, or mention how he had known her mother. Oh, the hatred that would cause... it would be best if she never knew. But when she was talking about things and he could only think of responses from that time on Earth, it made things rather awkward in his head.

"Sleep isn't all that important when there's coffee." He agreed with her assessment, knowing it was true, and hoping she would assume he knew from his time spent on Mirage. It could happen, he supposed.

And then, she surprised him all over again by holding the door for him. He tilted his head to the side and nodded slowly before inclining his head just slightly in thanks. Then, he passed through it and into the cafe. It was a standard place of it's type, and he smiled slightly as he glanced around. "That table in the back, it's fairly private." While still being in a public place, he thought but didn't say. "Shall we?"

She lifted a brow quizzically at him. He'd missed coffee? He hadn't had any in his realm but he knew how it was cultivated. That seemed odd but she reminded herself he was immortal and perhaps he hadn't always been just a goblin king in an underground labyrinth. That struck her with a bit of wonderment but she brushed it aside to focus on the task at hand.

She started back toward the table he'd mentioned and began to chatter again. "I used to spend a lot of time in Starbuck's or rather Barnes & Noble in the café. Reading and drinking coffee made everything so easy to forg- Um, yes. This is fine. This is um good."

Sliding easily into one of the seats and gazed up at him half-expectantly, half-hesitantly. Her nerves felt as taut as a violin's strings and she hoped it didn't show in her expression. So she started talking again. "It smells delicious in here. I can just imagine all the variety they must have here on a magical Planet. How will we ever decide what we want?"

Other than the raised eyebrow, which he pretended not to see, she didn't react much. It could have been worse, actually... he walked to the back after her and slid into the seat across from her. Well, it was time to see if there was any way a truce between the two of them could work. There was always the option of just ignoring each other, after all... an option he didn't much like, truth to be told, but one that might be the only choice if this fell through.

Well, he'd just have to do his best to ensure that the negotiations worked. He settled his hands on the durable denim of his jeans. They might not look like much in his opinion, but they had advantages. Even if they weren't remotely tight enough to suit him. He smiled slightly, and listened to her chatter on until she came to a stop.

"Just think of whatever you want and tell that golem there..." As if summoned, the creature came to the table and waited expectantly. "Espresso, double shot." He told it, and then raised an eyebrow toward Sarah to see what she ordered. He was almost glad for the necessity of ordering, which put off this conversation for even a few seconds longer.

Instead of ordering her coffee directly from the golem as he'd recommended, Sarah closed her eyes briefly and imagined the tall, steaming, nutty-scented drink she wanted. If Jareth was right, the Planet would just drop the drink in front of her without the necessity of the golem. She could have magical powers of a sort! Wouldn't that be a fun way to start a... conversation for a truce. No, no, that would not be good. Her eyes snapped open and she smiled sweetly at the golem.

"I'd like a hazelnut latte, please."

Her stomach knotted a little and she turned her gaze back to Jareth as the golem scurried away, presumably to have their order handled by actual hands. She smiled at him pleasantly and then looked around the room which was rather non-descript as far as cafes went. It looked like the sum of the parts of every cafe she'd ever been in before. Nothing discernible to make it stand out as special. That was calming in a way.

She folded her hands on the table and played with her fingers for a moment before taking a deep breath and speaking, her eyes on her hands. "So, do you think we have a shot at figuring a way around this whole pink elephant?"

Jareth watched her curiously as she closed her eyes. Moments later, the green orbs snapped open again, and he couldn't help but wonder what she'd been doing. It was probably slightly odd, but he'd never even considered ordering his food the way she had. He should have, since he was well-used to wishing whatever he wanted into existance, but for whatever reason he just hadn't thought of it.

The golem, given it's orders, stumped off. Now, there was no reason not to look at the girl on the other side of the table, and slowly, his mismatched eyes turned to do just that. He didn't look down, as she was, though it was somewhat tempting. Tackling things head-on like this wasn't exactly his style, he prefered a more subtle approach.

"Well, it seems to be that the best way to deal with this is to be direct." Talking around it, it had already been made all too clear, wasn't going to work. He sighed softly. "I suppose I should go first, since it's my idea." But where to start?

"Direct. Very well. I kidnapped your brother to make him my heir. I didn't expect what happened between... us." And it was true. He'd thought to use her childish story to gain access to Toby, but that had all changed. "But things changed."

Keep it together, Sarah. You wanted this.

She kept her eyes on her fingers, not trusting herself with the emotions this was going to bring to the surface again. His heir? That just would not make sense in her mind. And of course all she had to go on with the immortality was the play she'd loved so much and had memorized. The Goblin King was immortal in that setting. He had also loved the girl... So perhaps the play was not entirely accurate.

"Your heir? Aren't you immortal, Jareth? Why would you need an heir?"

She lifted her eyes to look at his face, her expression purposefully blank and as neutral as she could make it. "And why my little brother? Weren't there any babies languishing away, forgotten in some foreign orphanage who could have benefited from being the heir to a kingdom?"

The golem had returned with their coffees and Sarah was grateful for the heat between her fingers as she grasped the red ceramic mug in her palms. She held the mug until her hands were red and painful from the heat and then she took a sip.
