WHO: Marcus & Faith
WHAT: A chance meeting
WHEN: Day 31
WHERE: Down by the dock
STATUS: Complete
RATING: PG-13 for Faith?

Marcus had to admit, he was finding this new forest lake setting of the resort very relaxing. Though it often surprised Earthers, there were not that many heavily forested planets in the galaxy, and he himself had not visited most of them. Perhaps it was his British ancestry, but he felt somehow energized by the current surroundings. He knew, of course, that beyond the mountains that encircled their picturesque oasis there was an inhospitable desert as far as the eye could see, but he tried not to think about that. The air was clear, it wasn't too hot, and the activities on offer almost made one consider staying, if one only had a choice.

This day, Marcus had taken time to wander down to the dock that extended out into the lake from the bottom of the lawn that ran down to the shore from the lodge. Many other people appeared to be off on activities, including his dear friend Tonks. It seemed as good a time as any to relax by the water. He could see several people swimming, and it looked like a boating party was just breaking up. Maybe he would see someone he knew.

She had to admit, she didn't hate it here. Okay, so there were some really weird people around, no doubt about that. But then, as a Slayer, she came across quite a few of those anyway. She hadn't been given a choice about being taken here, but aside from that fact which somewhat rankled at her independant spirit, she wasn't having a horrible time. After all, if you weren't allowed to kill at all, it made it impossible to kill by accident.

Faith's good time, she suspected, was going to get even better. The boating thing was over, and it had been pretty good, actually. She'd decided that going swimming was the thing to do, and as such, she'd ducked behind a tree and quickly dressed in the skimpiest bikini that she could imagine. It barely deserved the name, but then, Faith wasn't exactly the shy type. Probably people saw her changing, but she didn't care.

When she poked her head out from behind the tree, she saw the dark-haired man who had been glaring at her during the snowball fight, just standing there. Her mischevious spirit was awakened, and she smirked slightly before leaning casually against the tree which had been her dubious shelter. "You gonna start giving me dirty looks again, man?" She called out, and several people turned to look. She, however, simply stared at Marcus. She sensed this would make him uncomfortable.

Faith's voice from behind Marcus made the Ranger jump about ten feet into the air. He hadn't noticed her hiding behind the tree, and probably wouldn't have come down to the shore if he had. He would not soon forget the way she had pursued him, once upon a time, the way she had been stronger than him, the way he had not been able to stand up to her in a fight. He had been lucky to get away from her. It had given him a start to see her at the snowball fight after successfully avoiding her for so long, but nothing had come of it. Now, however, she was standing right behind him, and wearing an outfit that left almost nothing to his somewhat threatened imagination.

"Dirty looks? Whatever are you talking about?"

Had he given her angry looks at the fight? He hadn't meant to. Or was she talking about lecherous looks? He found her twentieth-century slang somewhat difficult.

For about half a second, she considered going over to him. But the way he was looking at her, sort of like she was some sort of viper or something, made her think if she did she might just give him a heart attack. So she stayed where she was and continued to call out to him, much to the amusement of the other people around.

"Yeah, I figure either you just really dig blondes, or you're gay. Cause you sure the hell don't look like the typical man who wants to grab me by my hair caveman style." She examined her fingernails in minute detail before looking at him, her eyes alight with mischievious energy.

"So, what gives?"

She couldn't be serious, could she? Did she really expect him to believe that she was confused about why he did not look at her with barely-contained lust? The incident between them had not been so long ago that he could believe that she had forgotten, not did he think it possible that she would not make the connection between the way she had treated him and the aversion he now felt towards her. Or maybe she really was crazy... Maybe she had a completely different memory of that day than he did. Maybe she still thought they should be together. Well, if that was the case, he was intimidated, but he was going to have to do his best to explain to her that her chances may have been slim before but now that he and Tonks had expressed their mutual love, there was no chance at all.

"I'm dreadfully sorry, my dear, but you really are going to have to give it up. You see, I'm not gay, and I don't have a particular preference for blondes, but I am spoken for."

He hoped that covered it, though he feared it was insufficient. At least she was staying over by the tree. That gave him room to run, if she decided to ignore his words and have it her own way again.

It wasn't often that anyone had the pleasure of seeing Faith looking completely out of her element. But it was certainly happening right here and now. She blinked, actually having no idea what to do or say for a moment or two. She turned his comment over in her mind, but it was no good. No matter how many times she worked it over in her mind, it still didn't make the slightest bit of sense. For at least a minute, she was silent.

"Hey... you gonna start making sense anytime soon?" Give up? What was she supposed to give up? And how was making conversation some sort of declaration of interest? It really didn't even make the slightest bit of sense to the brunette girl, and for once, there was no deceit or mischieviousness in her eyes as she looked at the dark-haired ranger.

"I really don't care if you're dating Cleopatra, you know." She informed him, starting to get annoyed now. "You're nothing special, anyway. I dunno why you apparently think you're like the hottest shit ever, but just so you know, you're not." Man, this guy had an ego, if he thought that she was just going to want to hook up. Sure, she'd sleep with him, but only if it wasn't too much work. Really, the only reason he'd interested her in the first place was because of the dirty looks.

Well, what was he to make of that? She sounded serious, like she really didn't understand what he was talking about. Could that be possible? Could the Planet have done something to her? Now that he looked more closely at her, it did seem that she looked different, too. Was she the same woman that had assaulted him? Marcus paused, then began speaking carefully.

"Your name is Faith, is it not? You are a trained martial artist with deceptively great strength? If so, are you not the same woman that attacked me several weeks ago, here on this planet? If not, I am very sorry for my mistake."

The Ranger did not relax, but was not quite ready to run either. If this woman was simply someone who closely resembled Faith, he had some serious apologizing to do. An accusation of rape, even one made silently, was not something to be taken lightly.

It was rare that Faith actually got pissed off about something. Usually, she tried not to care about things enough to actually get mad. But this had gotten to her for some reason, and her large brown eyes were narrowed at him, her slender arms crossed over her chest in annoyance. Her voice was sharp as a dagger as she spoke.

"Yeah, I'm Faith, but I'm not trained. It's natural." She continued to glare at him as she spoke. "I'm strong, I'm quick, and I kill vampires. But a couple of weeks ago I wasn't even here, I was back in good old Sunny D planning to save the world, so really, just get the hell over yourself, okay?"

She thought about the whole situation for awhile longer before frowning slightly. "Anyway, why would you be all glarey and stuff if all I supposedly did was..." She thought more. "Wait, attack you? Why, you a vamp?" It was sunny out, of course, but that didn't stop her from glancing around, trying to see if she could find a stake or something in case he got all fanged and ugly or something.

Marcus was sympathetic to Faith's anger -- after all, he was accusing her of something very serious -- but he got confused when he realized she was angry about other parts of what he said. It was proving difficult to match up what she was saying with what he knew had happened. It did sound like she was the woman in question, but not only did she not remember the incident, she had other memories from the same period. Marcus quickly held up his hands in self-defense.

"No, no, I'm not a vampire! Look, sunlight; no burning." he bared his arm briefly, keeping his distance from the slayer, who looked ready to leap on him. "It's only there was a woman named Faith here three weeks ago who looked remarkably like you. She had your abilities and your accent, too. Clearly, you remember being somewhere else, but I promise you I was attacked, and it left a rather strong impression on me."

One of her comments confused him. Why wouldn't he glare at her if she had attacked him? It wasn't exactly a polite way to treat someone.

"Well, I wouldn't say that all you -- she! -- did was attack me. The attack was, how should I say, erotically-motivated, and despite your -- her! -- obvious general desirability, I was not interested. The woman did not take no for an answer."

It was getting to the point where Faith was actually getting a little nervous herself. She disliked losing control through anger, though she usually more than made up for it when she fought. But she'd learned a few things in jail, so she took a very long, calming breath and consciously forced her arms to uncross. When she thought she could speak without screaming several moments later, she opened her mouth once more.

"Yeah, you don't have the dangerous thing going on, def not a vamp." She raised an eyebrow at him as he continued to speak, but then frowned briefly when he mentioned one particular point. "Hey, wait, hold up. I don't have an accent..." But that was quickly forgotten as he continued with his explanation.

It wasn't at all long before her demeanor changed once more. From angry, to baffled to... apparently amused. He was really getting to see many different moods today, that was for sure. Faith started laughing, and not just a polite little chuckle, either. "You think I tried to rape you!" She finally said, as she fought to calm herself. The idea should have been offensive, but instead it amused her to no end.

"Look at me." She pointed down at her toned, fit body, displayed for the whole world to see in the skimpy bikini. "I don't gotta rape anyone. So even if I was here in weirdo land, I wouldn't have gone after you." She thought about that for a moment. "Unless I'd been fighting, cause damn, that makes me hungry and horny, but even then, no means no and all that jazz." Truth be told, she was telling the truth, though only partly. She wouldn't ever rape anyone, but not because of how attractive she thought she was. Ironically, it had more to do with insecurity, and maybe even something that could almost pass as ethics. But she wasn't going into that, not with this stranger. Probably not with anyone.

Marcus found that, despite the vividness of his memory, he couldn't help but be convinced by Faith's sincerity. The testosterone flowing through his veins could attest to the fact that she was not short on animal magnetism, and he could easily believe that she did not have to fight for lovers. It was becoming more and more clear to him that the woman that had attacked him must have been incredibly similar-looking to but different from the woman in front of him. Well, either that or it was the same woman only she had been somehow enchanted and had since lost her memory, but that seemed a little too far-fetched.

"Madam, I am truly sorry. I have accused you of a horrible act. Can you ever forgive me?"

Marcus was truly sincere himself. He might only have eyes for Tonks, but he would never forgive himself if he felt he had been remiss in his honourable treatment of anyone he had wronged.

"Please, if there is any way I can make it up to you..."

She'd been thinking just as he had, but about something very different. Okay, so she had a bit of trouble focusing on one thing sometimes. "For real, though, no accent." She looked at him and suddenly grinned at him. Obviously, moods for her were not all that stable. "You do, Limey."

But then she was pulled back from her musings by his apology, and truth be told, she was more eager than usual to accept it. Maybe normally she would have just kicked his ass, but when she really thought about it, how often did someone actually end up apologizing to her? Homeless, basically friendless, she wasn't exactly the sort who usually got, or even deserved, apologies.

"Yeah well..." She was slightly uncomfortable now, and crossed her arms over her chest again. Not in the same way as she had when she was angry, now it was much more of a defensive posture. "It's alright, geez, don't wet yourself, seriously..." She muttered the words, trying to put off his apology. It wasn't something she was that used to.

The slender woman held onto her own elbows, creating a sort of defensive space between herself and Marcus. Of course, there was a physical distance there, too, but it wasn't enough. Or it didn't feel that way. "It's all good, for real. No harm no foul." She smirked at him slightly. "Does that mean I get no more dirty looks at snowball fights? Bummer."

Marcus noted Faith's stance. With her arms crossed, she appeared to be covering herself up, despite her scanty garb. It seemed a clear sign that she wanted some distance. Now, was that because she found the idea that she had assaulted him distasteful or did she really find his offer obsequious, as she had said. Either way, it was evident to the Ranger that she was not eager for his companionship. That was fine. They had already said what needed to be said. A few pleasantries, then, and he would be off.

"Well, I daresay I could give you a dirty look if you asked nicely--In my previous life I was a sort of interstellar police officer, so I've had some practice--but no, I won't be giving them to you behind your back for my own satisfaction."

Despite the banter, the young woman looked sincerely uncomfortable with the conversation. He supposed he ought to end it, and let her get to her swimming.

"Okay, then." She flashed him a bit of a smirk. "I gotcha beat for dirty looks, though, I was the motherfucking Slayer, baby." She laughed, feeling more than a little uncomfortable now that she wasn't really mad anymore. She had to fight the urge to bit her lower lip, a nervous habit. "You never saw a dirty look until you saw a Slayer girl give one to a bloodsucker, for real."

Deliberately, she uncrossed her arms from across her chest and held her head back. She wasn't about to let her feelings be known, and hardly being a mind reader, she had no idea they already had been. She finally half-shrugged, gave a jaunty wave, and then an ironic little salute.

"Well, if we're done, I'll be getting the hell outta Dodge... if it's all the same to you. Keep it real." With that, she was off. That had been an odd little conversation, and all in all, she was glad it was over.
