Day Thirty
Who: Shannon Rutherford & the Doctor
What: Shannon arrives
When: Day 30, mid-morning
Where: Out near the lake
Rating: PG-13 (unless you count a couple of f-bombs)
Status: Complete

There. A few feet ahead, Vincent was sitting, staring back at them panting, his tongue lolling out lazily, as if he had no idea just how frustrating his disappearance was for her. Stupid dog.

Sayid said that he'd circle around behind Vincent and Shannon nodded, agreeing quietly as she started forward slowly. For a moment, she felt a swell of relief in her chest, because Vincent was just sitting and watching them, unmoving. But then, the dog seemed to catch Sayid's movement in his peripheral, because his head turned just slightly and then, with one last quick glance in Shannon's direction, he took off into the jungle again.

Shannon bolted forward and soon realized that Sayid was also no longer in sight. "Sayid!?" she shouted, looking around - half for him and half for the damn dog - as she ran. Her foot caught a root and sent her sprawling, landing flat on her face. She laid still for a moment to fume silently, but then she heard the whispers and sat up quickly, whipping her head around. She'd heard other people talking about hearing the Others whispering. Sayid, for one. The whispering seemed to change its place of origin and Shannon turned her head again, eyes wide in the darkness. She was shaking, now, and terrified. The whispers moved again and Shannon, too, moved her head, whipping it around toward the sound, only, this time when she did, it was suddenly daylight. And she wasn't in the jungle anymore.

Jumping to her feet, Shannon looked around, shivering in fear and disorientation. What the hell? There was a lake where the camp - and thus, the ocean - should be. She felt a sink in the pit of her stomach... The Island could do some pretty messed up stuff, she knew, but it didn't even look like she was on the Island anymore, at all, now. The weather was similar, but it was a bit chillier than it had been on the balmy night she'd been in two seconds ago. And, clearly, just looking around at all the buildings, Shannon could see she wasn't exactly in Kansas, anymore, as they said.

"From one Craphole Island to another?" she asked herself, confused. That's when the irritation set in. "That's just great," she snapped. "That's just great!" she shouted angrily. She spotted someone in the short distance and knew right off that it wasn't a fellow survivor of flight 815. So, either she really was in a completely different place...or that was an Other and she should book it. She was leaning toward the former. "Hey, you," she snapped. "What the hell is this place?"

She was teetering again, wasn't she? So the rather prickly pear was actually a fragile one, wouldn't be the first time the Doctor had run in to one of these. It was sort of cliche, if you asked him - that the pretty mean girl on the outside be all hurt and mushy on the inside. Not that he was judging, just observing.

"We pick names that describe us. I'm the Doctor because I fix things. I make things better," he explained, but it was clear she was already off in her own little world which he supposed was well enough.

She was headed on down the hallway in the direction of the showers.

"Nice meeting you," he called after her, shuffling off in the direction of the mens changing room.

Shannon heard him call out to her and she turned her head giving him a vague, disinterested wave, before heading into the ladies' shower.

Running water. Hot running water. With enough pressure to actually do the job! Oh, this was heaven. Michael's makeshift shower in the caves had been okay, but not even close to the same as a real shower.

It was probably the longest shower Shannon had taken in her whole life and it was...glorious. But afterward, Shannon realized she really wasn't in the mood to listen to the Doctor and his jabber-jaw any longer. Whatever, he'd live. She dressed and went back out, deciding she would do better just to leave him there.

So instead, she looked down at the key and noticed that the room number was engraved into it. Good, she wouldn't have to ask that guy for help, after all. Especially since she noticed one of those weird creepy stone things in the room, suddenly.

"Which way to here?" she asked, holding out her key to it. The Doctor had been right; it didn't speak. It pointed. "Thanks for nothing," she muttered and stalked off.

It didn't take her long to find her room on her own and when she did, she was pleasantly surprised to see that it was enormous. It wasn't, really, a room at all. It was laid out just like the apartment she'd had with Nora back in LA. Once again, the Doctor had been right: a little slice of home. Shannon smiled and went inside, closing and locking the door behind her.

Finally. Peace and quiet. She could worry about how she got here, where (really) she was, and whether she'd ever see Sayid again, later. For now...it was time to read a good book and have a lie down. Or! Yes! She hurried to the back room that she and Nora had used for practicing their ballet and was beyond pleased to see that the wall-length mirror and bar were still there in all their glory.

"Awesome," Shannon breathed and kicked off her sneakers, heading over to the bar and taking great pleasure in doing a simple plie.

This place wasn't so bad after all...
