WARNINGS: PG-13 or so.
STATUS: Complete

The explosions were behind her, now. The bus was speeding away, and the dark-haired Slayer looked back. How could she not? Sunnydale had been a big part of her life over the last few years. And now, it was gone. She had seen Buffy kiss Spike, and then there had been fire everywhere. She'd barely gotten out, and couldn't imagine how Buffy could have. It was impossible, the blonde must be... gone.

Only then there was a thump on the roof, and a smile lit up Faith's pretty features. Her and Buffy had never been the best of friends, but she was glad that the blonde had made it. Her dark-eyed gaze turned back to the hole that had been Sunnydale, and she sighed. It was gone. Completely. But her voice was completely steady as she spoke. "Hey, hold up. It's over, we can stop." The bus skidded to a stop, and people started piling out of it.

Her attention turned then to the handsome black man in the seat. He was bleeding from several places. Faith felt regret, almost, when she realized that he was going to die. Robin Wood, the principal who had asked her for a chance. A man that she almost felt was worth giving that chance to, just on the terms of persistance. He'd said he would surprise her, if she gave him the opportunity. But he wasn't breathing anymore. His eyes went blank and dropped half closed. He was dead.

It didn't seem proper that he should have his eyes open even partway, so the Slayer reached out to close them. At which point, he started to breath once more, and smiled at her. "Surprise..." he whispered. And she was happy, that was the really strange thing. She was happy he'd survived. So happy, in fact, that she couldn't handle it. Smoothly, she rose to her feet and left the bus, leaving him to the care of those more inclined to enjoy healing others.

All the others were outside, mostly, except for a few of the newly-made Slayers who were taking care of the wounded in the bus. Buffy stood in front, of course. That was just her way. Willow, Xander, and Dawn were close by. Faith went to stand behind them, and shamelessly listened in on their conversation.

"So what do we do now?" She cut in after this was said, deciding that she'd been quiet long enough. "Yeah, B, so what..." But whatever she had been about to say was suddenly cut off. Though the Hellmouth had been closed, something large was opening up beneath her. A black hole, and as everyone turned to look, she disappeared within it. Of course, she didn't scream. It wasn't her style. But she did go out fighting, trying to hold on to anyone or anything to keep herself from being sucked in.

All to no avail, though. She thudded to earth once more, and a chill wind blew, lifting her hair from her neck. She shivered. The jeans, light shirt and jean jacket she'd worn had been fine for California. But it was freezing here. And snow kept blowing into her, making her many wounds and lacerations sting. She grabbed her elbows and hugged herself protectively, trying to ward off the chill.

She had had no time to adjust to this. No time to figure out what was going on. Someone was walking towards her, someone with a billowing black cloak. She could tell that he was very pale, had black hair, and she instantly came up with a nickname for him on the spot. "Hey! Skeletor! Over here. Where the fuck am I, what's going on? I don't think I'm in Sunnydale anymore, Toto."

For the third day in a row, Snape had gone out into the cold alone. Though he had gleaned from the accounts of others that many had disappeared, he was not as able as they to simply assume that the vanished had gone for good. He was determined to seek his Slayer until he either found her or found evidence that led to an answer about what had happened to her. Though he had not intended to form any, he had formed a genuine bond with the girl, and he was not prepared to relinquish it easily.

So he had searched. He had searched the lodge. Then he had searched the recreational facilities adjacent the main buildings. Now he had begun to search the wilderness surrounding the resort. Prepared as he was to uncover some grim sign indicating the mass abduction and slaughter of his former fellow incarcerates, Snape was completely stunned to see the very woman he sought appear before him amid the blowing snow. As she called out to him, using the same ridiculous name she had given him when they first met, he hurried his steps towards her.

"Faith! I am... glad to have found you. I have been searching for days. As for where you are, you are still on Mirage. As for what is going on, I'd hoped you could tell me. Where have you been? Do you know anything about the others who disappeared?"

To say that Faith was taken aback would be a definite understatement. This strange man was acting like he knew her. Which was fine, whatever. Some people were insane. But he knew her name. It was a little hard to chalk that up as coincidence. But she fell into a ready stance as he neared. She didn't want to be anywhere near him until this made some sort of sense.

"Woah, big boy. Back the fuck up." She spoke calmly, though she was not doing nearly as well inwardly. "One more step and I will hurt you." She spoke with a sort of confidence that would seem almost silly from someone as small as she was, but then, she wasn't what she seemed. "Back up and try again."

The dark-haired girl eyed him warily, waiting to see if she was going to have to fight him. To be honest, she didn't want to. She was tired. It had been a long day, what with saving the world once more and all. But at least he looked like he would be a pushover, so that was good. Probably have to worry more about snapping his spine with a kick than about him actually being a threat. She didn't really want to kill again, not a human. Assuming that's what this guy was. He looked kinda creepy, so it was up for debate on that point.

"Okay, brother. Time to explain how the hell you know my name." She flicked her dark hair back, although the wind almost immediately tugging it in front of her eyes again. "And woah, what are you tripping on? What the hell sort of place name is Mirage? And as for where I've been... man, it's pretty radical. You got about five hours? I don't even know where to start."

Snape stopped, but he didn't back up. Was she joking? No. She didn't remember him. She didn't remember Mirage either. What had happened to her? That at least she seemed to remember. He palmed his wand and held his arms away from his sides in a ready posture that was meant to look non-threatening.

"I have six hours if you need them, and I can help you start. I know your name because we have met before, here, in this place. You and I had a... partnership. Three days ago you vanished, along with several other people who had been living here. I have been searching for you since. My name is Snape, and I am your Watcher."

He hoped that some of those details jogged her memory. If she had forgotten who he was, she would likely have forgotten what he could do. She still thought she could beat him in a fight. He did not want to have to repel her attack, but he sensed he might have to.

Her dark eyes widened in scornful amusement as he spoke to her. "Alright, someone's been into the crazy pills again." It was a bit of a defense mechanism to make fun of things when she was scared, upset, or nervous, and this certainly counted on at least two of those fronts. But she didn't like to look like she was feeling anything, so the hasty layer of scorn got thrown up to protect herself.

"No, seriously. How did you know my name?" She tilted her head to the side and pursed her lips. "I've never been here, dude. Seriously. What the hell?" When he relaxed his pose, she lowered her own attack-ready one as well. But that didn't mean she was off her guard. "Snape? Seriously? Nice name. I think I prefer Skeletor."

She sighed and shook her head, approaching him cautiously. "Look, man, you're behind the times, alright? I don't need a Watcher, haven't for a long time. I don't know how you even know what that is, but whatever. You aren't mine. So cut the shit, okay?"

None of this was making a hell of a lot of sense to her. She couldn't have been here before. She'd remember. And she didn't really care to think about how he knew all these details about her. "Well, whatever mind-reading mojo junk you're doing doesn't matter. Let's see. How far back you wanna go? Cause most recently I almost watched my boyfriend die." Which was overstating the case, because Robin had not been her boyfriend. But she was a dramatic creature at heart. "Also, Spike blew Sunnydale up. That's the short version."

Snape took a deep breath. At least she was talking to him. That meant a fight was less likely, although one could never be sure with Faith. Clearly, in her mind, she had been away for more than three days. She was wearing a different set of muggle clothing than she had been the last time he saw her, but that shouldn't be a shock after three days. The rest was difficult to say, thanks to the blowing snow. The real question was, had she been away to a familiar place where time flowed at a different pace, or had she or someone else created her memories to cover a different reality.

"I see. That sounds dramatic. Are you sure you haven't made any of it up?" He sensed that her resolve was firm, but he wanted to introduce the possibility into her head. "I assure you I am not reading your mind, but do truly remember... being with you, here, only three days ago. I am surprised, I admit, to hear of your boyfriend and of the destruction of your... hometown?"

Snape was starting to suspect there was no way to talk Faith out of this mindset she had. Perhaps there was some action he could take to remind her...

A particularly strong gust of wind blew snow onto one of her worse lacerations, and she winced. Actually, she wasn't feeling so hot. She thought her lower lip was swelling, and also was fairly sure she was getting a black eye. Undaunted, she leaned down and picked up a cold handful of snow.

"Excuse me? You're the one saying I've been here before and you're asking if I'm crazy?" It was a bit of a sensitive subject for the Slayer, the mental health question. "Hello, pot? This is kettle." She slapped her handful of snow against her eye, trying to lower the swelling before it turned into a nasty black eye.

"Woah, hold up." She looked at him around her snow, a smirk forming on her face. "You're 'surprised' to hear about my... oh, no. Do you have some sort of thing for me?" She looked him up and down, very, very obviously. "Sorry, but my boyfriend is way hotter than you." Which wasn't a lie, exactly. Robin was a cutie. Just not exactly her boyfriend. "But, yeah, good old Sunny D bit the big one." Her voice was uncaring, though deep down, it hurt. She looked away from the man in front of her and sighed just a little.

"Look, man, can we just get the hell out of this snow? I'm freezing my god damned tits off."

Snape was not enjoying this meeting as much as he had hoped to. Faith did not remember him or Mirage at all, and the bond they had formed was non-existent as far as she was concerned, which meant it was non-existent, period. His defenses started going up, and he snuffed his lingering disbelief.

Why was she doing that with the snow? Taking a closer look at her, he noticed that she had several significant cuts and bruises. Her young body was just as well-formed as before, and he started to get an erection from the simple memory of their previous liason.

"Yes. Let's get you out of the snow. Why don't you come to my rooms. I have... medicines that can treat your eye. And I have no idea what you're talking about, having a 'thing' for you. I do not have a thing of any kind for you, and I never claimed to be hotter than your boyfriend."

The smirk didn't fade. She might not be able to see his erection through his robes, but the way he was looking at her was clear enough. She'd always been a beautiful person, and was well-used to people looking at her with desire in her eyes. Perhaps if she was a nicer person, she wouldn't have reacted the way she did.

"Dream on, dude. I'd rather fuck a horse." She dropped the snow, mostly melted into water now, and turned away. "No thanks. I know exactly why you want to get me into your room and, yeah, that just ain't gonna happen, mister." Of course, that might be different if she hadn't just had such a climactic situation with Sunnydale exploding. Now, if she'd been taken in the middle of all that, all bets would be off.

She started walking, really having no idea where she was going. But it was perhaps telling that she pointed herself right toward the dormitory her room was in. Almost like she knew, on some level, where it was. "Later, Skeletor. And hey, hang around if you want. I might get desperate enough and then you might get lucky. If I go blind."

It was all very cruel, and Faith really wasn't a bad person. What she was was alone on a strange world, confused, and scared. What better to cover it up with than her false bravado?

So, that was how it was to be, was it? She didn't just have no memory of him, she had no compassion for him either. Well, at least that meant she was the same woman, which only made this more difficult for the former Potions master. What she clearly did have, was a cruel streak wider than his own, and a deep need to scar anyone that came near her. It was a pity, really. She had no idea what she was missing.

But Snape did. As Faith walked away from him as one might walk away from a bug one has vengefully squashed, Snape thought only of what had briefly been, what could have been, but never would now. He had never truly understood, deep down, how a young woman as stimulating as she could find pleasure with a man such as he, but he would never be able to forget that it had happened.

Leaving her to stumble her own way to her key and room, Snape headed to the cafeteria. He needed to deal with this somehow, but first he needed to eat.
