Gray Arrives
Who: Gray Harkness and OTA
When: Day 28
What: Gray arrives to Mirage
Rating: PG-13 at the most. (I'm hoping)
Status: Complete

Gray could hardly see for the pain from his beating for stealing food as a guard shoved him into his cell for the night. Oh he had known better, he really had, but the little scrap of fish left from his owners' extravagant dinner mixed with not eating anything for nearly three days made him abandon his training for that brief second. What made the beating particularly sting is that he hadn't even gotten the morsel to his mouth. So along with his stomach cramping from hunger his back was now bloody and raw and the offending hand broken.

The young boy curled up on the hard rock floor and cried silently, wondering if anyone would ever come to rescue him. "Mama...Papa...Big Brother....Where are you?" He whispered, closing his eyes and trying to sleep despite the discomfort and pain.

He dreamt of Boeshane and its night time chill, the scent of it ocean air and the sounds of home. It was a bitter sweet dream one that lead to confusion when he woke up to a bitter cold. Gray slowly opened his eyes and looked around in utter surprise and loss as he stared out at a field of snow in front of him and buildings behind him.

Where in the Universe was he?

Andy was headed toward the snow fort again. It seemed just as good a place as any to get high; better even, maybe, because when Andy smoked, he smoked a lot and he had no idea whether the other people in his building would be able to smell it...and if they could, whether they'd be mad. Plus, there was the added bonus of the fact that, come on, it was a snow fort. How cool was that?

As he trudged through the snow, bowl in one pocket with his lighter and his bag of weed in the other, he noticed a small figure out in the snow. When he drew nearer, he noticed it looked like a child. Raising an eyebrow, Andy called out to him. "Hey, kid, it's cold outside. You should get a coat or something before you come out and play in the snow. You're gonna catch a cold."

It made sense to him, anyway. Unless he was a newcomer. Andy paused and then walked up to the kid. "Hey, are you new?" The look on the child's face suggested that he was a little lost...if not a lot lost. Andy shrugged off his coat and shivered, holding it out to the little guy. "Here, man, let's get you inside and figure it out, okay?"

Andy didn't really know much about kids, but he knew that this one was way too skinny, shivering, and scared. The least he could do was get the kid indoors and warmed up and then maybe pass him off to someone who knew anything at all about kids. This, to say the least, was not Andy's forte...

It didn't go unnoticed by Andy that the little guy wouldn't look up at him. Or that he was really, really skittish. The child looked like he was in pain as he tried to put on Andy's coat and started to cry once it was on. Andy had seen this once before. On TV on one of those stupid Lifetime movies, but he'd seen it. This kid had been being abused and if Andy had to take a guess, he'd guess Mirage had ganked the kid just in time...or maybe just a tiny bit too late.

"I'm not gonna hurt you, buddy," he said and hadn't realized that he'd used the mind thing until he heard his own voice echo in his head. It had been reflexive. Maybe because Andy subconsciously realized that it was the only way to get through to him. When he spoke again, though, he made a conscious effort not to use the mind thing. Not if he didn't have to. "Come on, let's get out of the cold, buddy, okay?" he asked, holding a hand out to the kid.

He paused. "My name is Andy. What's yours?"

Andy thought for a moment and remembered that Sidney had written in her journal asking for help after having found a kid. Rose had been one of the ones to reply, he remembered that, and he rememebered, too, that Rose had specifically mentioned having experience with kidnapping. He thought very hard about replying to her to ask his own question and hoped that it showed up on the page.

The little boy didn't take Andy's hand and then he answered in a carefully rehearsed voice. At least, that's what it sounded like to Andy.

What the hell kind of answer was that? That was some pretty nasty child abuse, if that's what this was about, Andy thought, frowning. The kid wouldn't even look at him.

"Not here, you're not," Andy assured him. "You're safe here. From...whatever. Whoever. I can promise you that, kid," he added, giving his hand a gentle shake in front of the child. "Come on, man, it's cold outside. Please come with me? We'll get in where it's warm and figure out what's going on okay? Get you settled and all that."

He felt a jolt and cringed as he saw Rose's answer to his inquiry in his head. The page appeared in his mind's eye and she seemed to think maybe she could help. When the pain went away, Andy nodded to himself. Maybe she could shed some light on what to do. Girls were better at that stuff than he was.

"I don't know about you, but I'm freezing my butt off...I promise I won't hurt you, but please come with me," Andy repeated.

It took a lot of effort not to just use the mind thing and tell the kid to come with, but he refrained, however difficult it was. This kid seemed to have been through enough on his own; he didn't need Andy in his head making him do things.

Giving the little boy a small smile, Andy closed his hand around the child's gently. "Gray? That's a nice name. It's nice to meet you, Gray," he said. To himself, he sounded like an idiot, but he'd never really had to deal with kids; he was out of his element. The one thing he did know was that he had to treat this one with care; like he was fragile, because...maybe he was.

Andy led him slowly toward the buildings. "Where are you from, bud?" he asked in an amiable tone, hoping to get Gray to open up a little bit, or at the very least to trust that Andy wasn't going to hurt him. "I'm from the United States. Earth," he added to gently prod the boy into answering.

"Whoa, now..." Andy said, stopping in his tracks. Okay, that was a whole new can of worms and Andy wasn't sure if Rose would be able to help, anymore, but he was definitely not letting her off the hook, now. Master? That sounded like something a slave would say. Or a kid, in this case, who was more than just knocked around. Not cool with Andy.

"Master? No, no...no. Not me." He shook his head, eyes wide. "It's not like that, bud. At all," he insisted. "Just call me Andy, okay? Don't tack on that Master thing. You don't have to and I'd rather you not, honestly..."

He could see the pain on the child's face when he looked down, and the tears. It sort of broke his heart.

"You're on the Planet. Mirage. The names are interchangable, I think. I'll explain a little more when we meet my friend, because I'm bound to miss some stuff and I'm sure she'll be able to help me."

He paused. "Are you hurt? You want a piggy back ride or something? I can carry you, if you want, if it hurts to walk, Gray," he offered, frowning slightly in sympathy.

"God, no!" Andy gasped. He crouched down in front of Gray and looked him in the eye. "No one will hurt you here, least of all me. If someone ever tries to, you just let me know and I'll kick their butts, okay?" he asked, smirking slightly at his own use of gentler words than he'd normally have used.

Andy's smirk fell away at Gray's response. Blood? Jesus... "That's okay, buddy, don't worry about it," Andy replied. "I have lots of clothes and a shower up in my room. I'm gonna take you there first, if that's okay. You can take a nice, warm bath, if you want, and we'll get you some clean, dry clothes. And...clean up your cuts so they don't get all infected," he said awkwardly, assuming that there had to be some, if Gray was worried about getting blood on him. "Here, just put your arms around my neck and hang on until I stand up again, and then I'll do all the work, okay?"

"Fine, I'll just tell 'em off," Andy replied, compromising. "I won't let anyone hurt you, anymore, all right?" That was the point Andy was trying to get across, anyway.

Gray wrapped his arms around Andy's neck and Andywrapped his arms around the little boy's body before standing, sickeningly surprised at how easy the child was to lift. Andy wasn't a strong guy, but Gray was awfully light; he hadn't gotten a good look, but he guessed that if he did, he'd have noticed that Gray was emaciated.

He shifted himself so that one of his arms was beneath Gray's bottom and the other on the back of his head if only because he had nowhere else to put it and thought, by the way Gray was acting and from what he remembered from the Lifetime movie, the kid's back was probably taking the brunt of the beatings. Easier to hide the resulting injuries, that way, if the movie had any basis to reality.

"Are you hungry?" Andy asked. "Tired?" He wasn't really sure what he was supposed to do to help Gray, but maybe asking would be a good start.

I could use some clothes in this kid's size and a first aid kit, if it's not too much, Mirage, he thought at the Planet, hoping that the stuff would be waiting for him when he got back to his room. And a friggen instruction manual, while you're at it, he thought miserably to himself in addition.

When Gray rested his head against Andy's shoulder, Andy assumed he wasn't hurting the boy and started toward the resident buildings.

"Four days?" he asked, frowning. "All right, we'll definitely get you fed. You can eat as much as you want, okay? Anything you want, I'll get the Planet to give it to us," he promised.

He could feel his shoulder being wet with tears. Andy panicked. What had he done wrong, now? "What's the matter? Am I hurting you?" he asked quickly as he trudged down the hill and back to the resident buildings. The closer they got, the more hopeful he felt that Rose would be there waiting. As if on cue, he was hit with another mental image of the pages of his journal and she'd answered. She'd meet him at his room. The pain faded and Andy sent a mental reply as he reached Building D.

He stopped in front of the door and frowned. How was he going to open it with no free hands? Gray was resting his head on Andy's shoulder, so he tried the door with the hand he'd had on the little boy's head. Unfortunately, it wasn't his dominant hand and the door was heavy; it didn't move.

Taking a deep breath, Andy leaned back slightly and grunted with pain as he felt the muscles in his back protest. He didn't dare try to switch hands, lest he inadvertently hurt Gray by shifting him. Leaning back would allow him to keep Gray balanced against his torso and still be able to use his free hand without having to move his arm too much. With a bit of effort, he pulled the door open and jammed a foot in the way of it so that it couldn't close on him as he took better hold of Gray and stood straight again, slipping inside.

"All right, home sweet home, bud," he said softly. He decided that even though he normally bounded up the stairs like an excited child, Andy would do better to take the elevator up.

The walk down the hall wasn't terribly long and Rose wasn't there, yet, but Andy had blind faith that she'd keep her word, so with his left hand (this time, much easier and successful), he opened his room door and headed inside, shutting the door behind himself. He crouched with another cringe and grunt of effort and set Gray gently down on his mattress on the floor. There were, thankfully, a few sets of clothes that were probably Gray's size folded neatly up near the pillows, a first aid kit set beside them.

Stretching his arms over his head and letting out a sigh of relief, Andy shook his head as he looked down at Gray. "You don't have to trust me, yet. Shit, I wouldn't trust me if I'd been through what I think you might've been, but you will. You'll trust me eventually," he assured the boy. "I'm gonna help you and I'm gonna make sure nobody else hurts you ever again, okay?" he asked. Because, well...shit, it was just wrong what had happened to this kid and no one should have to endure that; especially a defenseless child. Even Andy knew that. He crouched back down to be level with Gray and took up the first aid kit. "You don't have to feel bad. Honestly."

Taking a deep breath, he looked down at the first aid kit and then back at Gray. "Look, I'm not gonna lie to you, dude, I don't know what I'm doing. But it can't be that hard. So...where's it hurt the most? I'm gonna try and fix it," he said gently. "And you're not a bother, so don't even worry about it, Gray. Seriously."

Mentally, because he was too busy with this to look for his journal, he replied to Rose to let her know that they were in his room and she could let herself in.

"My friend is on the way. She knows more than I do about stuff like this," he added to Gray awkwardly. "I left my door unlocked so she can just come in...so don't be scared. She's a friend. She's safe."

Oh, God, you're kidding me... Andy thought as Gray answered where it hurt and something rather dirty came to mind first. Andy was not even going to touch that with a ten foot pole.

"Okay, your hand..." Andy decided, first, taking Gray's hand gingerly in his own. He winced. It looked badly broken and maybe had been for a while. "Shit..." he muttered. He had no idea how to deal with broken bones. Maybe Rose would know how to set it. Andy let go of Gray's hand. "Okay, never mind that, because I'll probably end up making it worse and I'll let Rose figure that out. Your back?" Andy asked. "I'm gonna lift up your shirt, okay? So I can see," he explained as he moved behind Gray very slowly. If his first inclination was right, Gray would likely not take well to Andy being behind him, so in an effort to reassure the boy, he kept one hand gently on the child's shoulder and carefully stripped Gray of the jacket.

"Hey, Mirage, how about some food? What do you want to eat, Gray? Just ask for it out loud and my room will have it. Anything you want, bud," he said as he very slowly lifted up the back of Gray's shirt. He winced and hissed, closing his eyes the moment he could see the tear marks in the child's skin. Slashes of raw skin on top of already raised, scarred skin...

Andy felt sick.

In over my head, in over my head...way over my head... he thought, trying to take his mind off his own nausea in response to what he'd seen. "Arms up, so I can take your shirt off," Andy said quietly. "I can't do anything with it still on, buddy."

Rose, please hurry, he thought desperately at her, and hoped, wherever she was, she'd get his message.

"Fish, good. Great! Mirage. Fish!" Andy rambled as he took the child's shirt off and dropped it on the floor, swallowing hard against the renewed wave of nausea that rolled over him at the sight of the blood caked into the material. His eyes moved around the room until he noticed the plate of fish up on his dresser. "See? Check that out. Talk about room service," he said quickly with exaggerated cheer as he rose to his feet and crossed the room to retrieve the food for Gray. He crossed back and crouched down again, holding the plate out to the boy.

"I know you don't like me behind you, but it's not like that," he assured Gray, looking into his eyes and keeping his voice even and gentle. "I will not hurt you, I promise you. It might sting when I use the peroxide...well, it probably will sting, but they'll get infected if I don't. But that's it. I'm just gonna clean these cuts and patch 'em up...and then I'll sit right next to you, or in front of you, or wherever you want me to until Rose comes and helps me figure out how to fix your hand."

He didn't move right away, wanting to make sure Gray understood that his motives were innocent. After a short pause, he finally moved again, crawling over the mattress to sit on his heels behind Gray and taking the peroxide out of the kit and using one of the pristine white towels in it to create a barrier between the boy and the bed. He pressed the towel up against a scarred but unbroken bit of skin on Gray's lower back just above the boy's waistband and took a deep breath. "Sorry, sorry...this is gonna sting," he warned and tipped the peroxide bottle to let the liquid trickle over Gray's upper back and down. It flared into bubbles immediately and Andy winced reflexively for Gray. "I'm so sorry," he apologized, frowning heavily, "but it'll hurt more later if we let it get infected than it hurts now to clean it..."

Andy heard Gray cry out softly and then continue on as Andy dabbed the towel gently against the little boy's back to mop up the loosened blood that had been dried onto his skin.

"Oh, God...dude, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. I know it hurts and I know I promised I wouldn't hurt you..." Andy breathed, feeling his heart break all over again. "Essential pain, I swear, I swear. Almost done, Gray, I promise, I'm so sorry..."

He tossed the towel aside, next and reached for the gauze. Then, he paused. "Uh...maybe I should let 'em breathe for a bit..." he said, more to himself than to Gray. He hesitated and then set the gauze back in the first aid kit. Rose would know, he hoped, what to do, but for now, he'd let them alone, because he'd been the bad guy long enough for one day as far as he was concerned. He stood and crossed behind Gray, heading for his personal stash and stopped again. If he was leaving the gashes open to the air, he probably shouldn't be smoking while in the same room. So, he paced for a moment and then asked Mirage for a couple of sodas which almost immediately materialized on the dresser where the plate of fish had been.

"Here," he said, crossing his bedroom again and snatching up the bottles, holding one out to Gray. "Hope Dr Pepper's okay...I think the room knows it's my favorite one, so it just always shows up," he explained a little apologetically before taking a seat on the floor, Indian style, in front of Gray. "I'm done, I'm not gonna do anything else until Rose comes, okay? So, go ahead and have your fish. I have a feeling that if you want it bad enough and think it hard enough, it'll keep refilling the plate until you don't want anymore."

Rose had rushed when she had got Andy's message. She may not know everything, but from what she'd seen and learnt she knew enough to help. She didn't know her way about that well yet, but luckily she knew about the way the rooms were set out. She didn't bother bringing a few things, knowing that the planet would give here whatever she needed.

When she got to the room she knew belonged to Andy, she knocked gently before walking in. She tried not to look so shocked at the young boy she saw, putting on a gentle smile as she closed the door and walked closer.

"Hi I'm Rose," she told the young boy, but tried to not sound too patronizing.

Rose smiled gently at the young boy before being pulled aside by Andy. Next thing she knew she could hear him in her head, could hear him talking, but he was far from moving his mouth. She nodded as she listened to him, her gaze turning to Gray. After Andy had spoke...well in her head anyway, she stepped closer to Gray, kneeling down so she was looking into his eyes.

"Gray, love. Can you tell me where you were before you came here? Where are you from?"

Rose listened as the young boy spoke, taking note of what Andy was saying. So he was a slave, and a very ill treated one at that. The very thought that a young boy was treated this way made her blood boil. When he curled up, Rose felt her heart reach out for him and she gently lay a hand on the boys hair.

"You're safe here, sweetheart. I'm gonna take a look at you, okay? See if I can fix anything that you have hurting. So can you tell me where it hurts? I promise I wont touch, just have a quick look."

Rose nodded, reaching for the kit.

"I'm no doctor, but I can do some things like this."

She began preparing to cast it up, knowing that she might not be able to make something fantastic, but could at least make it durable. She looked up at him as he explained how he got his injury, frowning a little but saying nothing.

Gray turned to give Andy a look of belief in the man himself mixed with unsureness before falling into a contemplative look and watching Rose, curiously. For the moment he looked his age, lost, unsure, and terribly small with only one thing jarring the picture. The aged look in his eyes.

"If I'm ever returned...they won't be pleased with the fact I was missing..."

"No need. Happy to help."

Rose smiled sweetly up at him, checking the cast before tidying everything away. When she had finished, she looked back at him.

Rose had noticed Andy looking at him, but tried not to make it obvious. He seemed to be someone Gray really trusted, so there had to be something good in him and Rose was slowly beginning to see it. She smiled when Gray took her hand, and she began to stand.

"Do you want to sleep in one of our rooms tonight or would you rather we find your own?"

"That's fine, love. You'll want some peace and quiet to sleep, don't need us moving about and annoying you! But you wouldn't get in the way, so I'll show you my room too, and if you need me you come get me, okay?"

She wanted to explain the journal too him to but thought it bes to wait until he was in his room.

Rose smiled a little as Gray yawned again.

"Do you want me to carry you sweetheart? That way if you get tired you can just fall asleep."

She squeezed his hand gently, letting him know she wouldn't mind if he wanted carried. After all, right now she wanted the best for him.

Rose smiled, nodding.

"'Course you can. Don't worry, I'll walk slow enough that you don't have to let go of him but I'll still have to walk fast because of the snow."

Standing up, she quickly pulled off her hoody, pulling it around him.

"There, can't get you too cold. Now if anything hurts, you tell me okay?"

Carefully, she picked him up, ensuring that she had a tight enough grip on him but that it wasn't too tight.

"Just lay your head on my shoulder if you like."

Rose smiled as Gray snuggled against her a little, before heading out. She noticed the look on his face as he saw the snow and grinned down at him.

"Once you get some sleep you can play in it all you want. But we need to get you warmer clothes first as well. Now, where are those golems with your key? I got told they came with one."

Just as she finished speaking one appeared, seeming to hold a key.

"That was fast."
