She must have thought about it while she slept, though she couldn't seem to remember her dreams. But there was no other reason for her to have awoken with a plan fully-formed in her mind. It was really, really early. The sun was barely rising. In normal situations, Tonks wouldn't even be awake yet. She liked to sleep until at least 10 am or so, but this had pulled her firmly out of her sound sleep. There was something she needed to do, something that simply wasn't going to wait on her convienance.

With a sigh and a yawn, and an undeniable surge of excitement and nerves, she slipped out of bed and wandered over to her dresser. Her pajamas were soon off, and she was clothed in a manner that was fairly odd even for her. Although she enjoyed bright colors, she seldom picked out anything near as nearly blinding as she did today. She didn't even try to match up the colors, so that her top was a bright orange and her pants were an eye-piercing shade of pink. She had literally picked out the first thing that she'd found in the drawers, and it showed. She looked rather like a toddler who is learning to dress themselves, actually.

It didn't matter, though. She distractedly changed her hair color to a bright blue that made the whole outfit just that much brighter, and didn't even glance in the mirror to see the effect she'd achieved. Soon enough, she was outside a room very close to hers, the one that housed the Ranger who had come to mean quite a bit to her. There was something that she really needed to do if she was going to get any rest at all, since the whole thing had messed with her to the point where it was hard to think about anything else.

With barely a hesitation, she raised her hand and knocked on the door. Hopefully she wasn't going to wake Marcus up, but she doubted it. He didn't seem like the sort to sleep in. As she waited to see if he would answer, if he was even in, she clutched her hands tightly in front of her, just under her breasts, the nerves surging inside of her to the point where she wondered if someone had cast some sort of nausea hex on her. But she still waited. She would see this out.

Though the subject really should have been dropped when she ordered her own drink, she found that she had far too much nervous energy and she continued rambling on on the subject. "I don't know why anyone would want to drink cold tea. What's the point, anyway?" She took a deep breath and then kept going. "You should really take that cold tea and head it up with a nice warmth charm."

She was so far beyond what would count as polite, and she realized it suddenly and looked at him apologetically. This was going just about as badly as it could be. She didn't even know what she'd come to say, except to have this out, but this certainly wasn't it.

"Oh, bugger it." She muttered to herself before turning to him. There was far too much thinking involved, and she decided that it wasn't worth her time. "I love you." Her cheeks colored up again, but she didn't look down from his blue-eyed gaze.

When Tonks went on again about the negative qualities of iced tea, Marcus knew something must be working on her. It wasn't like her to be this impolite. When she came out and told him she loved him, he knew that must have been it. Despite his joy at hearing the words, Marcus's stomach turned flips in anticipation of his own confession, and a chill went over him in apprehension of the moment. He took her hand and looked into her shining eyes.

"Tonks, I love you, too. I think I have for a little while now, and I think I've known since I rescued you."

He decided to stop while he was ahead. What if she had come to tell him that she loved him but they couldn't be together? It was possible, seeing as she believed she was fated to die young and in the arms of a hairy man-beast. Even if that were the case, though, he was glad he had made her aware of his feelings.

What had she been expecting? She had no idea, but it certainly wasn't this. Actually, she'd never come out like this and simply told someone she loved them, for the very good reason that she'd never been in love before. She gasped, but once the shock wore off, her eyes were shining with delight.

"You... you do?" She captured her lower lip between her teeth and chewed at it for a second, contemplating her next move. "How come you never...?" Apparently, though, she decided that didn't matter. Her emotions were too strong, and she rose up and flung herself at him.

The intention was to land in his lap, but being Tonks, she instead tripped over thin air and went sprawling. Her head rested against his leg, and she decided that was good enough as she clung to it blissfully.

Marcus, surprised by Tonks' sudden leap towards him, had flung his arms out to catch her, expecting her not to have complete control of her trajectory. He was again surprised, however, by just how little control she actually had. When she landed hugging his knee, he was mostly just happy she had not hurt herself.

"Are you alright down there? Yes, yes, I really do. Can I take it you're pleased?"

Stroking Tonks on the head, he knelt down slowly, meeting her on the same level, on the floor. Taking hold of her shoulders he attempted to detach her from his leg and hold her before him, where he could look into her eyes.

It was more than a little embarassing, or it would be to most people. Tonks, however, was used to such things. Not that she regularly threw herself at men, but just the fact that she spent more time tripping than walking normally had to say something. However, when he shifted down onto the floor with him, she was more than happy to wrap her arms around his neck instead and cling to him.

"Well, I guess so." She smirked slightly at him, a little manic, her eyes gleaming mischieviously. "It's not the worst thing that's ever happened to me, anyway." She pulled away and smiled and him, gazing in his eyes. "So, you really, really do?"

She paused for awhile, simply to look into his eyes, and then raised a hand to rest it on his cheek. "Why? I mean, why would you love me? I don't get it."

Marcus hugged Tonks back, enjoying the sensation of holding her in his arms. It felt good to be so close to her, to have so much contact with her. He could have done it for a lot longer, and was slightly wistful when she pulled away to look him in the eye.

"Yes, I really, really do. Don't take me wrong. It's not the kind of thing I say lightly, but I truly mean it. I know you're going to say it can't be, because I've got my world and you've got yours, but I just can't help it. You are the most beautiful, fascinating, and amazing woman I have ever met. You continually surprise me, and continually delight me. For as long or as short as we have, I don't want that to stop."

Smiling into the hand placed on his cheek, he took one of his own from her shoulder and touched her face, too. It meant a lot to him to see the look in her eyes.

She was really torn, actually. She knew herself well enough that if she tried to do all the things she wanted to do, she would fall all over herself and get none of them done. So she contented herself with simply touching his face and feeling his hand on her cheek. After awhile of that, though, she giggled softly and rested her head on his shoulder, clinging to him.

"I don't say it at all, really." She thought about that for awhile. "I mean, my parents perhaps, but it's not the same at all, is it?" Her head shifted up and she allowed her lips to press lightly against his throat. "Not the same at all. But I'll say it to you and I'll mean it."

She sighed softly at some of his words. "Yes, well. There is that, isn't there? You and I aren't from anywhere remotely near the same place. And there's still the war, but... I guess I'm just a romantic, because I think love is worth it."

Marcus held Tonks to him, reaching up to stroke her bright hair. What a pleasant pose in which to have a conversation! Marcus found he enjoyed it even more when he felt the witch's lips brush his neck. Shivering with pleasure, he smiled broadly.

"I think love is definitely worth it. I think it's rare enough as it is, and I think we need to reach out and grab it when it presents itself, even if it might be for only a short while."

Continuing to stroke her hair, he leaned back against the couch and pulled Tonks' torso with him so she was leaning against him. He had so rarely allowed himself a moment like this, and wanted it to last forever.
