Day 20

Day 20
Who: Bob and OTA
What: Bob goes for a walk.
When: Day 20, noonish
Where: Vinyard grape vines
Rating: PG probably
Status Incomplete

Bob was not a happy Guardian. After arriving in this strange place, yanked away from his friends and family at a horrible time, he had stayed in his room. His room here, which looked like his apartment in Kits Sector back in Mainframe, down to his old car in one corner. For the past few days, he had tried to take his mind off of what must be happening to Dot, Enzo, Matrix, AndrAIa and the rest back in Mainframe. He tinkered with his old car for a while, before realizing it was actually attached to the walls of the room. That had occupied approximately two cycles, as far as he could tell. Strangely this place had gradual changing light, rather than the abrupt change he was used to. Then, he attempted to contact various people and places in the Net via Glitch. That hadn't worked either. He then spent a cycle alone and feeling sorry for himself before deciding that this was no way for a Guardian to behave.

Setting out from his apartment, Bob was quite startled to find that this place had reconfigured itself in his absence. Where once there had been white sand and water, there were now long rows of some form of plants. He decided to set out for these. It seemed to him that if this huge a change had been made, it had to have been for a good reason. Walking outside, he found it quite bright.

He began to walk amongst the vines, noticing a heady odor that he had never experienced before. He had set out in the morning, and quickly lost track of time, wandering amongst the vines. He found it incredible peaceful. Another thought occurred to him. He had not seen a single game cube descend in the entire time he was here. Could he perhaps ahve found a system where the User did not visit random destruction down upon it's citizenry? This was the only explanation which occurred to him at that moment, and he continued to think and wonder after this as he wandered.

Bob looked up to see the woman approach. He half smiled. At this point, he thought, any company would be good. He had been alone with his own thoughts for so long, he had begun to depress himself. This was much like when he had been trapped in the Web. In that case, the Web Riders had been the ones to end his isolation. In this case, It would be this person.

"Hello. Yes, I am definitely thinking too much and would like some company, if you don't mind." He extended his hand to her and continued "I'm Bob, Guardian of System 452, called Mainframe." He paused for a moment, considering his current situation.

"At least I was Guardian of Mainframe, until I got sent here. I hope everyone's all right back there. Before I left, they were in horrible danger from a cunning virus named Megabyte. He had taken over the Principal Office and..." He sighed, and continued, "I'm sorry. I seem to be going on a bit."

Kibeth blinked a few times in confusion as the young man introduced himself. She'd never heard half the words he used. She gave him her best 'unsure but game' smile as he realized he'd been rambling.

"It's okay." She said cheerfully. "This place is rather strange. I think it leads one to babble a bit." She shook his offered hand and gave him an encouraging smile. "I'm Kibeth by the way. Lately of the Old Kingdom, though not directly from there. Kinda a long story. Not really important now"

She made a couple of notes in her notebook, marking down new things that would need marks. She didn't want to forget anything.

"So how long have you been here?" she asked when she'd finished.

"It's nice to meet you Kibeth. And I think I've been here about 6 or 7 cycles." He glanced down to his arm, where Glitch attached. "Glitch: timekeeper," With the command, Glitch changed into a watch.

"Yeah, 7 cycles. Oh, and this is Glitch, my keytool." He thought again of Mainfraime, and once again hoped that his friends were doing well without him. With a start, he realized that the conversation had paused for a little bit while he thought. He shook his head, and continued.

"I've never seen a system like this Mirage before. Is this much like where you come from?"

"Cycles?" Kibeth asked, tilting her head to the side, trying to figure out what sort of time measurement he was using. She watched as the thing on his wrist changed shape into one of the strange 'wristwatches' she'd seen during her brief visit to Ancelstier. He called it a keytool though, and she was pretty sure the Ancelstierian watches couldn't change shape. But maybe his world was more like the Old Kingdom with looser rules of possibility. Maybe he just had different names for things.

"I suppose it's like this in parts" Kibeth said in response to his question. "Though not parts I've been to, at least not recently. I wouldn't really call it a system though. More like a place. Some say it's a resort, but I've never been to a resort before so I can't speak for sure." She peered at his wrist again. "Where'd you get that fascinating little thing?"

"Glitch?" asked Bob, indicating his keytool. "All Guardians have them. They act as sort of a partner and general troubleshooting toolkit. Watch." He held out his arm off to the side of them both.

"Glitch: cutter." Blades sprouted from Glitch's central wheel. "Glitch: shield." The cog wheel retracted it's blades and enlarged to become a shield. "Glitch: view scope" The keytool once again transformed, this time assuming the shape of a telescope. "Glitch: system scan" Glitch returned to it's original shape, with the cogwheel slightly enlarged and displaying statistics about Mirage.

"I have to admit," continued Bob after this demonstration, "this place is not a lot like my home. Mainframe proper is a lot larger than this place, and I miss the city sometimes."

Kibeth watched wide-eyed at the demonstration of the strange device's capabilities. Not even Prince Sameth could create something like that. And there was no tell-tale scent of magic, Charter or Free about the thing.

"Facinating..." she said as it started displaying information about Mirage. She looked up, slightly startled as the young man started talking again. She'd almost forgotten about him in her fascination with the object he wore. She smiled a bit to cover her inattention, and looked around. "Mirage isn't very big I guess. I've traveled a lot so I'm not a good judge of size anymore. But it changes!" she said brightly. "It was near the ocean when I got here."

Bob started at her revelation that the resort was changeable.

"You mean they can reconfigure their firmware that quickly? The only time that happened in Mainframe was when the whole system crashed and had to be brought back from a backup copy."

He shuddered, remembering that time. The whole city ruined and falling into the sea around him. Then the User rebooted the system, restoring everything to normal. This reminded Bob of something he had been wondering for a while.

"What about this system's User? I've been here for a while and I haven't seen a single Game Cube."

(OOC: Sorry about the extremly long delay. Student teaching put an unexpected strain on me.)

Kibeth gave her best unsure but game smile. This young man kept using the oddest words. If she hadn't known better she'd have thought he was speaking another language all together.

"I don't think Mirage has a backup copy. Or 'Game Cubes'. Though there is a room full of games. It's really neat, though I don't know most of them. How would you copy a world anyway?" Maybe he knew some strange form of Charter magic that she didn't. That would be facinating
