Who: Tonks and Marcus
What: Horseback riding and most likely plotting to escape the planet.
When: Day Three, Morning
Where: The stables
Rating: I'm gonna say PG-13
Status: Complete

During the night, the young witch had had a bit of a brainstorm. Not a useful one, like how to get away from here, but still, one that she awoke eager to try out. Much earlier than was usual for her, the Auror bounced out of bed, wearing her oversized Weird Sisters t-shirt that she usually slept in. Glancing around at her room, she screwed up her face and concentrated. The pink walls turned into an equally brilliant purple, and she grinned in satisfaction. She might not intend to stay here long, but she really was enjoying the ability to change these surroundings at will.

She quickly showered and then changed into her chosen outfit of the day. Jeans, of course, because she pretty much always wore them. But this time, she chose a bright purple pair instead of her normal blue jeans. Pairing it with a black t-shirt, she looked into the mirror and nodded in satisfaction. Her hair, which had faded to it's natural brown hue during the night, took just a second to fix. Soon, it was jet black. An unusual choice for her, but she went with it.

Soon she was ready, and heading to the food area. She didn't stop in the restaurant this time, since she was in a hurry to try out her new idea. She stopped by the kitchen, snagged an apple and a granola bar, and as far as she was concerned, she was ready to go. Munching on her breakfast, the young Auror made her way down to the stables. She looked doubtfully around at the large beasts, and then sort of picked one at random that she thought had nice eyes, and wasn't going to kill her. Then, it was time to see if she was right...

Closing her eyes as she clambered on, she tried to pretend it was a broomstick she was straddling. A few large broomstick. And, this time, she didn't fall off. With a cry of satisfaction, she pressed her heels into the beasts flanks and off it went, like a shot, with Tonks somehow managing to cling to the saddle like a burr.

She didn't know how long it had been when she came riding back, having explored many of the trails around the place. Finally, though, she was tired, and headed back towards the stables. No one seemed to be around, really, which the young witch wondered about. But just as she was thinking that, she saw someone in a dark coat walking by. She was riding pretty fast, so she didn't see who it was. Curious, she turned the horse around and cantered back towards whoever it was.

"Hullo, there!"

She waved in a friendly way, and even managed to stay on the horse at the same time, which was damn impressive considering the last time she'd tried to ride, she hadn't been able to even stay on once the horse started moving.

This was definately not going well. She wouldn't have thought that his coat had anyplace for her foot to get so completely trapped in, but clearly, that's exactly what had happened. She yanked her leg, but didn't want to either rip his coat, or break her ankle. Carefully, she sat up halfway, her chest pressing into his side as she reached around his slender body and started groping for her foot. It was hard to see exactly where it was, though, and she really hoped that she wasn't making the whole appropriateness of the situation much worse.

"Um, no. Hopefully not, anyways. Other than that, I didn't have many plans. Lunch, maybe."

Getting her damn foot untangled would be lovely, too, she thought to herself as she struggled to see exactly where her foot was caught.

"I don't know, I guess we could do that. Although I was thinking of taking the time to think of ways to get home, since Apparation clearly didn't work."

Marcus kept his hands to himself and attempted to remain perfectly still as Tonks squirmed under and around him, trying to free herself. He continued to do his best to speak as if none of that was happening. How the hell had she got her foot tangled that badly anyway?

"Lunch sounds good. Later. Right, well, I suppose finding a way out of here is more important than catching up with the others. I haven't found a way yet, either. There is a man here called the Doctor who has a ship, but he hasn't been able to get it to work."

Marcus wondered if he could help Tonks' struggle by rolling to the side or lifting or pushing her, but he could quite see a way. Perhaps it would be more chivalrous than embarassing if he asked about it.

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

The Auror shook her head as she finally found her foot. A fold of his coat had somehow formed into almost a knot. It was amasing, really, the things that could happen when Tonks was around. Carefully, she plucked at the fabric, which gradually loosened and came free. Her leg fell down, no longer wrapped around his own leg, and she looked up into his blushing face, her own pale skin quite pink, and not just with exertion.

"I got it, thanks."

She frowned thoughtfully as she listened to him speak. A ship? Well, that could be useful, she supposed, if they were on the same planet as her home. She was doubtful about that, but was pretty much willing to try anything at this point. At home, who knew what was going on?

"A ship? Well, perhaps my magic could help, somehow, but Marcus, do you really think a ship is going to help? It isn't going to get us off this planet. I don't know what's across the ocean, here, so don't you think that we might be better off here?"

As soon as Tonks had her foot free, Marcus clambered off of her as gracefully as he could manage. The moment had been awkward for both of them, and it was probably best to put it behind them. It had been a very long time since Marcus had been that close to a woman, and the last time the two them had been engaged in hand-to-hand combat. He really wasn't used to it, and if he lingered longer in that position he feared his bodily reactions were going to get him in trouble. One couldn't keep blaming some things on one's fighting pike forever.

"Across the ocean? What ocean? Who said anything about an ocean? Oh, you're thinking of a sailing ship! No, I'm talking about a spaceship. One that certainly could get us off the planet."

Dusting himself off, he stood up. Watching the horse warily, he then bent over, offering the young witch his hand.

Still flushed, the young witch gave Marcus her hand, though she was sort of scared she might end up pulling him down again. These things just seemed to happen to her pretty much constantly, no matter how careful she was to avoid them. This time, though, she clasped his hand and rose to her feet, not gracefully, but at least without any serious mishaps.

"A... spaceship? Do they even have those...? I know muggles were messing around with them, but it always seemed like a bad sort of risk to me..."

Every once in awhile, she still found herself forgetting where she was, and then, the whole strangeness of the situation would come crashing down on her once more. There was a slight silence as she straightened her clothes and walked over to her horse, who was watching the whole proceedings with a calm sort of look on his face.

"Right. Okay. A spaceship. Well, I could try a couple of charms, see if anything helps. It's not exactly my area of expertise, but I'll give it a shot."

She patted the horse clumsily, which he tolerated, and then took the reins before turning to look at her companion.

"Marcus, I'm going back to the stables to put this guy back. Wanna come with me? And maybe then, we could have lunch."

She was only being polite, of course, to one of the only people she'd met on this crazy world. It wouldn't do to alienate him, but that's all it was.

Marcus helped Tonks up, then watched her as she adjusted herself and checked on the horse. With the exception of her clumsiness, she moved well, and Marcus could believe that she was a law enforcement agent. Actually, she seemed so honest and open that he found himself trusting her already. It was a good feeling, one he hoped to generate with other residents of this place.

"Anything you could do would be immensely helpful, I'm sure. I don't think even the Doctor has thought about the assistance magic could give his efforts."

As Tonks turned to head for the stables, Marcus fell into step beside her. He enjoyed her company, and was more than happy to spend the day with her.

"I would love to. And lunch sounds excellent. We can talk about what to do with the rest of our day. I was thinking this is a perfect opportunity to explore. We may be opposed by the entire planet, but it's possible the planet has underestimated us and left something lying around that it shouldn't have."

"Okay, come on, horsie..."

She tugged on it gently, nowhere near an expert horseback rider. Of course, since this was pretty much the first time she'd ever been near the things, that was probably to be expected. Still, the horse was tolerant, despite being called horsie, and followed her obediantly enough. As she walked along, she actually tripped less than usual, because of the support the horse offered. Never being one to be quiet, she spoke as they walked together.

"You know, it's kinda strange, when I first saw these horses I kept expecting them to have horns like unicorns or, well, obviously they can't be thestrals cause I've never seen anyone die and I can see them. But they're just horses, aren't they? Nothing supernatural about them. It's kind of... refreshing, actually, not having to wonder what sort of odd thing an animal is going to do next. It just acts like an animal."

She laughed as they walked through the large doors of the stable, and left the horse with a golem who, she had discovered the other day, would unsaddle and care for her horse. Which was good, because Tonks would have had not the slightest clue how to do so. Then, she turned to her new friend with an arched eyebrow.

"Well, now what? Personally, I'm starving. I didn't eat much today, because I wanted to see if horses were like broomsticks. And they are! But now that I know that, I think I want to eat. So, lunch? And then, we can do whatever you want. I've had no really good ideas about getting out of here. I could try on a broomstick but I don't think I know how to breathe in space..."

Marcus walked to the stable beside Tonks, fascinated by the things she said. He had no idea what a thestral was and could not exactly relate to the phenomenon of being surprised by a natural animal not having magical abilities. Furthermore, he enjoyed her natural energetic qualities. He could probably listen to her all day, with natural punctuations when he saved her life after some incident of clumsiness. He watched as the golem led the horse away into the stable. It was all very nice and good that those automatons did the work, but it didn't really help one learn new skills, did it? What if he actually had to take care of a horse someday? Now he'd never know how.

"Yes, lunch is on the radar. I say let's go there now. I have no idea what you're talking about with the 'horses are like broomsticks,' but it sounds like you may be on to something. I know a couple of ways to breathe in space, so if you could get us up that high, we might be alright. Of course, if your broomstick can't go at interplanetary speeds, we may be out of luck anyway."

Leaving the stables, he headed for the cookhouse, Tonks by his side.

As they left the stables, Tonks, of course, managed to trip twice over the doorjam, which took some talent for climsiness. Once, of course, anyone could do, but once with each foot? Completely different story. But, for her, it was completely normal, and she just continued on as if nothing had happened. For her, nothing out the usual had happened.

"Alright, then, we'll eat more of the goo food, which, by the way, thank you so much. You've made me completely paranoid about it, now. I can't stop thinking about it everytime I eat."

She grinned at him, for although the statement was true, it didn't really bother her much, and his company was definately worth any inconvienance, anyways. As they approached the building with the restaurant in it, she kept talking. She never really kept quiet for long.

"Horses are like broomsticks, it's how I got myself to even be able to stick to the bloody things back. I wonder if the bubblehead charm would work in space? It works under water. It might. Broomsticks don't go that fast, really. Faster than the horsie went, though."

Marcus found himself starting every time Tonks tripped, which was getting to be fairly often. He kept expecting her to hurt herself, and wanted to be ready to dart to her aid. Strangely, she acted as if nothing was happening. Perhaps she really was like this all the time. Marcus was going to have to learn to ignore it or go crazy from the nerves.

"Oh, you're quite welcome. To tell you the truth, I'm actually getting used to the idea of the goo. I mean, it certainly tastes like whatever you want, and what else can you ask for; I mean, other than nutrition? But it hasn't killed us yet, so I'm going to give it a pass for now. Besides how do we know that everything here wasn't fabricated out of a formerly undifferentiated mass of goo? The stables, the horses, the fences, maybe the entire lodge itself! How do you think our rooms change to suit our fancies? ... Oh, well, you probably think it's by magic, don't you?"

He grinned back, having fun teasing her about it. He didn't feel guilty about it, since she had brought it up and didn't appear sincerely worried by the thought. As they entered the lobby of the main lodge, he wondered if the other part of their conversation was losing steam.

"Well, I suppose they must be the same at least insofar as you ride them both. What's the bubblehead charm? Can it withstand the enormous cold of a vacuum? Anyway, sounds like your broomstick wouldn't acheive escape velocity. Do you have one with you, by the way?"

Of course, Tonks was completely oblivious to Marcus' alarm. To her, the tripping didn't even register. It was part of how she moved. She didn't understand how it could cause anyone any concern at all. She did notice that Marcus was looking over at her every so often, but then, he probably had to be very observant in his line of work, and she mostly ignored it.

"The idea of eating goo is just....yuck, don't you think? Well, no, obviously you don't think so, you just said that. Well, I do, that's for sure. And, yes, of course it's magic, what else would it be?"

She tilted her head as she turned to look at him, vageuly amused that he was teasing her, and nearly walked into the doorframe because she wasn't paying attention. She turned around just in time to avoid probably giving herself a concussion. Again, this wasn't unusual, and she didn't comment on it as she ducked around the attacking doorframe and into the building. Only when she was safe inside did she look towards her companion again.

"Bubblehead charm, lets you breathe underwater. Like this."

The witch pulled out and waved her wand, and a sort of transparent force shield appeared around her head. She smiled and winked at him before dispelling the charm.

"I dunno, I've never tried it it space. It would be dangerous, wouldn't it? I don't know much about space at all, really."

Marcus let go of his held breath as she avoided slamming into the doorframe. Clearly she was used to it, but he was still getting there. He found them a seat at a table, and ordered eggplant parmagiana. Everything here was cooked so perfectly, he wasn't scared to order anything there. Where he was from, it had been impossible to grow eggplants, and many other fruits and vegetables, and it would have been exhorbitantly expensive to import them. He was definitely starting to enjoy the restaurant, even if it was a little too easy.

"Ah, I see. It makes a bubble over your head. Well, that should have been obvious. Let's see, space... Space is very cold, cold enough to kill you if you don't have protection. Also, once you escape the planet's gravitational pull, you would have to be able to stay on the broom without its aid."

It was obvious that she had never become acquainted with anything like space-travel, and he wondered how much of his speech made sense to her sometimes. Still, she took it well, and returned it with speech that was equally baffling to him.

She settled down at the table and tucked her long black hair behind her ears as she got comfortable. When the golem looked at her for her order, she bit her lower lip in thought for a moment or two, thoughts of vats of goo dancing in the back of her head, and then decided to order something she'd heard of, but never tasted.

"A burrito, please!"

She wasn't even fully clear on what one was, but figured she might as well be adventerous. Her food came quickly, and it didn't look too scary. She picked it up and took a bite. Beans, cheese, sour cream... it was really good, actually! She fell to eating, and speaking in between bites.

"Cold, really? Does that mean you need to have warm clothing on all parts of your body, not just your head so you can breathe? That's pretty much all of what I understood from what you just said. Gravitational pull? I don't know what that is, but I'm pretty good at staying on my broomstick. I wonder if the planet would provide me with a broom? Mine's in my flat in London, of course."

Marcus cut his lunch, and tried to absorb Tonks's comments as he chewed. Mostly, it seemed she had caught the gist of what he had said, but clearly she did not have the scientific education needed to put it all together.

"Well, you need more than just a jumper actually. It takes more of a completely self-contained, sealed suit. You see, space is so incredibly cold because there's hardly anything in it. It doesn't have any air to speak of, it's just... space."

He took another bite and thought about whether what he'd just said would make any sense to her. He decided it wouldn't.

"Um, how about this: in space it's about minus two-hundred-seventy degrees."

He decided to leave it at that. He didn't know how to make it any plainer.

"Can't you get a broom from the stables or the kitchen?"

She frowned thoughtfully. Despite her lack of scientific education, she was not a stupid woman, and put the pieces of what he was saying together as well as she could. To be fair, he was doing a really good job of explaining, too, which helped. She was pretty sure she had a basic understanding of the situation.

"Well, with the bubblehead charm, the air instead stays the temperature of the air that's around when you cast the spell, so maybe, if it could be expanded to cover your whole body, if could protect one in space. I think I might work on that."

She took another bite of her lunch and then set the burrito down, licking some sour cream off her fingers with obvious relish. She thought about what he had said for awhile longer, and then finally shrugged, with a grin and a laugh directed his way.

"You know, I hadn't thought of that. I bet I could get a broom. It wouldn't be as good as the specially built ones, but I bet it'd work. Thanks, Marcus! Of course, I still don't know if I could even push through that thing you were talking about before, about um... what did you call it? I forget, but I get the idea you have to go very fast. Anyways, how far is it from planet to planet? They always look so tiny from Earth, just like stars, really."

Marcus was impressed by the young witch's ability to comprehend what he was saying, despite having no real background in such things. She was really a very intelligent woman.

"That sounds like an excellent plan. How long does it last again? And how does the air inside replenish itself? It's no good being trapped in space in a big bubble and running out of oxygen."

He finished his lunch, and ordered a plate of watermelon, just for fun. He was really starting to enjoy this restaurant, now that he was almost certain the food wasn't poisonous or drugged.

"Well, to escape the atmosphere you have to go several times the speed of sound. Do brooms generally break the sound barrier? It's quite a long distance between planets, even planets in the same system. I wonder if this planet has any sentient neighbours."

Tonks finished off her burrito and ordered some tea and cookies to finish off her meal. After all, witch or not, she was British. When it came a short time later, it was just as excellent as all the food here seemed to be.

"It lasts until you dispel it, as long as you can concentrate on it. Course, if you get knocked out or something, it ends, too. I don't know how the air inside stays fresh, it just does. Magic, you know? I was under water for hours once, and the air never ran out or anything."

She dunked a cookie into the hot tea and ate it, though she knew that her mother would be horrified by her behavior. But, then, her mother wasn't here, was she? She listened to Marcus' explanation, which went far beyond anything she even remotely could understand. She looked at him blankly.

"Sound has a speed? That's kind of... scary, really. Next, you're going to say that light has weight or something like that."

Marcus watched Tonks dunk her biscuits, amused that she was taking tea directly after dinner. He admired the charming faith she had in the power of magic, and wondered if magic would even work for him given his natural scepticism. Inspired by her example, he ordered some tea for himself, Minbari tea, just to see how diverse the kitchens' recipe lists were.

"Amazing. Nothing works like that in world of science. You have to cover all the bases, all the time, or something is bound to go wrong. And believe you me, when you're out in space and your ship's onboard computer goes wonky, you are in big trouble."

All in all, it sounded like her bubblehead charm was really useful. He wondered it she could envelope more than one person in the bubble. She might be able to create a bubble craft!

"The speed of sound is about 666 miles per hour. And actually, light does have weight, in a manner of speaking. It's borne by particles called photons, which have mass. It's not very much, of course, but it's weight of a sort."

Marcus sipped his newly arrived tea (perfect!) and waited for the expression on Tonks's face. He wondered if she would catch the reference to Christian mythology in his explanation.

His explanation only had her looking at him blankly, her tea rapidly-cooling and the cookies completely ignored. He had been speaking a little bit above her head the entire time, but she'd been able to understand most of it. Now, everything he said was basically gibberish to her. He might as well have been speaking a completely foreign language for all the understanding she had. She tried going back and picking apart the sentence for words that she knew, hoping to make more sense of things that way.

"I do know what a computer is, a sort of muggle way of trying to do magic, as far as I can tell."

And that was about the limit of what she could understand. Speed of sound, light having weight, it was all too much for her brain to even try to understand, or to make sense of. The number he mentioned didn't have any significance to her in the slightest, and she passed it by without really even thinking much about it.

"I think you'd better stop, Marcus. My head is about to explode."

Marcus realized by the look on Tonks's face that he had completely lost her. He had only been repeating commonly-know scientific beliefs, and hadn't thought they would be above anyone, but it seemed scientific knowledge was stuck at somewhat of a medieval Earth level in Tonks's magic-reliant culture.

"Sorry. Wouldn't want that. I'm sure you think much better with your head in one piece. Don't worry about any of it. None of it seems useful at the moment for getting us out of here."

Finished his tea, he looked to see if Tonks was also done her lunch.

"I don't think a computer is actually magical, but they do sometimes seem like magic to those who don't understand them."

Quickly, the young witch drank the rest of her tea and polished off her cookies. She was comfortably full, and ready for more fun, and whatever else her day would bring her. Still feeling slightly naughty that she didn't have to pay, she rose to her feet and looked down at her companion for the day.

"I dunno, Marcus, I think someday I'm gonna have you sit down and explain things from the beginning. Maybe then, you'll make sense every so often."

She smiled at him to show she wasn't really annoyed, and tilted her head to the side. Dark hair flowed over her shoulder as she looked down at him curiously.

"Ready to go? And... what do you want to do now? I dunno, I don't think we've made much progress in the whole 'getting out of here' field, do you? At this rate, the war will be over before I get back."

Marcus smiled, amused by the thought of beginning at the very beginning. Where would that be, exactly? The Big Bang? Quarks? Relativity? Fertilization in the womb? He wondered if she would ever actually ask him for that lesson.

"I'm more than ready. Let's go!"

He also got up from the table, not feeling strange at all about not paying. The Rangers' training facility on Minbar had had a cafeteria, of sorts, in which he hadn't had to pay, but had had to work in the kitchens. In this place he likewise didn't expect to pay, but he always felt a little guilty about not helping with the washing up.

"Well, I figure we would just wander out of the compound again, and see what we come upon. If you think it would be faster, we could attempt to ride those horses."

Not getting the joke, she simply smiled back and headed for the door. She, of course, nearly tripped over a table leg, a chair, and her own feet, but made it there safely in the end. She wrinkled up her nose at the mention of the horses.

"Thanks, but I'm sore enough..."

She cut herself off there, because she really didn't want to talk about how her thighs were sore from being clenched around the broad back of the horse she'd ridden. It just wasn't the sort of thing you said to a man, not usually. So she changed the subject.

"Let's just walk, and see where we end up, yeah? Hey, Marcus? When you were on top of me, I felt something poke me. It was hard. What was it?"

What she had felt, of course, had been his fighting pike, but she didn't even know of it's existance at this point. And she didn't realize just how suggestive her comment could have been taken.

Marcus flinched as Tonks stumbled her way to the exit. Apparently resting hadn't calmed her flaring case of clumsiness. It was just the way she was. Interesting that horse-riding made one sore. He wondered where it affected one... oh! Well, he wouldn't pursue that.

"Alright. No horses, then. Yes, we'll walk and see where we end up. Maybe we should just walk in one direction. I wonder what the Planet will do if we attempt to spend a night in the wilderness."

Following her out of the main building, he looked around the yard, trying to decide in which direction to head. Towards the lake, the river, the mountains? The mountains were probably the most promising. He blushed when she asked her question. Luckily, there were two true answers to that, so he could cover one with the other without lying.

"Oh, that was my fighting pike. Here. Let me show you."

He reached into his pocket and drew out the small, grey cylinder. He gave it a quick shake, and it instantly extended into a long, metal pole. He gave it another shake, and it instantly collapsed back into a palm-sized object.

Tonks faced the mountains, which seemed to be where he was considering going, since he'd looked in that direction longer than the others. It made sense, she supposed. Actually, any direction was basically as good as any other, as far as she was concerened. It worked for her, though.

As she waited for him to answer, she leaned casually against the side of the building. For once, she actually managed to stay leaning there, and not fall over as had been known to happen. Her eyes widened as he shook the small cylinder. It extended to full length, and then collapsed back on itself.

"I thought you didn't know magic! Hey, can I see? Accio fighting pike!"

Obediently, the pike flew out of his hand and into hers. She held it very still, having not understood that the shaking was a part of the process. When it stayed compact, she frowned.

"Hey, Marcus, it's not working..."

The witch pushed away from the wall and started walking. And, then, of course, predictibly, she tripped. Just a little, but enough to shake her hand. The weapon extended to it's full length. The luck that had kept her alive despite herself up to this point was still with her. The pike didn't smack her full on in the face. Instead, it slammed moderately hard into the far left side of her forehead. Most of the force of the weapon went past her into the air.
