Day 14
Who: Cassie and the Weasley twins
When: Afternoon
What: Escape to Hogwarts, er....
Where: Art Gallery
Rating: Wicked PG
Status: Complete

They looked at a painting. They started out in a normal pose, standing before the canvas and letting its abstract imagery bounce off their retinas. From the twins' expressions, someone might have thought the visual bouncing hurt. George tilted his head to the right. He blinked. "It's a red and green pepper mating..." He titled his head in the other direction.

Fred turned his back to the art, then he bent down to look at it from between his lanky legs. The way his orchid-coloured jeans framed his face, his legs making an inverted v-shape, he looked like an abstract sculpture. "It's dancing Christmas ornaments," he suggested.

George brandished his wand to move a few upholstered stools together. He laid down on them with his head nearest the canvas in question. He repositioned himself so his head hung upside down over the edge of the furniture. "I see what you mean -- I think."

Fred curved his body so he could put his head on the floor and he performed a headstand. "I wonder if it'll change how it looks when the blood rushes to our brains?"

His brother waved his wand at the painting. The picture rotated on the wall about 45 degrees. "How's that look?"

The other twin would have nodded except even a wizard couldn't nod when standing on his head. "I don't think it improves anything."

Neither of the lads paid any heed to someone who came into the gallery. They weren't facing in the right direction. Unless something weirder than the art they studied had waltzed in, they wouldn't notice right away.

While a hot beach resort was simply lovely, there was only so much sun and sand that Cassie could stand. She wasn't a fan of bathing suits and she had the sort of pale skin that burnt within minutes of sitting in the sunshine. She had spent the morning sitting in the shade and reading and had managed to finish yet another Mishima novel, and so for the afternoon she decided to do something a little different. She had seen the art gallery before, but had never ventured inside, so she decided that she'd give it a shot.

The sight that greeted her on entering the gallery was not one that one normally expected to find, but she couldn't help but smile. The two young men looked about her age, and they really just reminded her of her friends back home, goofing about in a place that was meant to be somewhat... serious. She hadn't even noticed the fact that the painting was round the wrong way, she was too busy watching the boy standing on his head.

She gave a delighted laugh, clapping a hand to her mouth as the sound echoed around the room. "Oh, wow," she said between giggles. "You're like, a proper gymnast or something!" she grinned.

The lads reacted the moment they heard laughter. As George shot up into a sitting position, Fred plopped his feet back on the floor and looked at her while on all fours.

"Hello, luv," they chorused to the girl, giving her huge matching grins.

"Beg your pardon, I'm not at all proper!" Fred protested indignantly.

"I'm George and he's Fred," said a laughing George. If her outburst had been noisy, the twins created an even more un-gallery like ruckus.

Their rather failed attempt at composing themselves only served to increase Cassie's amusement. She lifted her hand slightly, giving them both a coy wave of the fingers in response.

"Oh, no, of course not! You're very... improper?" she corrected herself, quirking an eyebrow.

She looked between the two of them as they introduced themselves, her expression growing more and more puzzled before the grin spread across her face once more. "Oh, wow. You're like... matching! That's so cool!" she gushed, as if it were just plain coincidence and nothing to do with biology. "I'm Cassie."

Fred and George looked at each other for a few seconds, visually comparing notes on the clothing Mirage had given them to date, teasingly misunderstanding her.

"Oi luv, his trousers look like soggy grass," said Fred of the dark brown t-shirt with a bright red apple on it.

"And his are coloured orchid," George ribbed both his brother and the girl. His shirt was orange.

Laughing, they imitated her wave. "Hello Cassie! Nice meeting you."

"So do you mean you come unmatched?" George wondered, grinning.

"Where's the other you?" Fred added, playing.

Cassie scrunched up her nose as the two of them compared their physical appearance; they were clearly a couple of jokers, just the sort of people Cassie felt comfortable with. She had been starting to think the planet was just full of complete boers. Old bores at that. These two even had English accents! It was practically like being at home.

"Oh, me? I don't know, maybe I've got another me out there somewhere!" she grinned, giving a coy little shrug. "You two from England, then? I'm from Bristol," she explained, glancing over their shoulders at the squint painting and raising an eyebrow slightly. "How did you get it to stay like that?" she asked, nodding toward the painting that seemed to be defying physics.

"Oh yeah, Bristol?" Fred chatted back at the friendly girl. "We're from Ottery St. Catchpole. Ever heard of it?" He was smiling the entire time he talked, happy to meet someone actually from a place not far from their home.

Meanwhile George turned to look at the askewed painting, crossing his arms over the orange shirt and mock-thoughtfully putting a long-fingered hand to his mouth. "Magic," he responded, "that's how. We're trying to figure out what it's meant to be."

Cassie thought about it and then shook her head slowly. It sounded like a small town, so she wasn't too surprised that she hadn't heard of it. "No, sorry, what county is that in?" she asked, hoping it would shed some light on the exact location.

"Wow, yeah, magic, of course," she agreed, although she made no attempt to hide the hint of sarcasm in her tone. She squinted at the painting, tilting her head from side to side as she tried to figure it out herself. "It's... um.. wow, it's like a child's finger-painted Christmas card!" she decided.

"Devon," the boys answered.

They smiled knowingly at each other when she sounded sarcastic. Both of them got their wands and continued their discussion about the painting.

"I think I agree with you now," George said as he waved his wand and the artwork shifted position on the wall. "It's some kind of Christmas ornaments." He winked at Cassie.

Fred waved his own wand and sent the picture revolving in the other direction. "No, no, you were right about it being mating peppers. What colour do you suppose the sprogs'll be?"

"Oh, devon! I know Devon, of course!" she gushed, overly excited by the mention of somewhere familiar. "Devonshire cheesecake, love it!" she laughed.

Cassie's eyes grew wide as the boys turned their attention to the painting once more. She placed a hand on her forehead, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment before having another peek at the painting. "Oh wow, it's like I'm tripping or something," she said. Still, she wasn't about to believe that they really were doing this with the little 'wands' they were carrying. She'd seen enough magic tricks in her life not to be taken for a fool. She moved forward to the painting, but instead of looking at it she reached to pull it out a little from the wall.

She frowned deeply as she found nothing untoward lurking on the wall, and turned to the boys, arms crossed over her chest and a confused expression on her face. "OK, a couple of magicians, then. Pretty good, too!"

"But I didn't see you fall," George commented, giving the girl a quick look of concern.

"We're wizards," the twins said in perfect unison to her comment about magicians.

"Though some of us have been magicians in the muggle world," George said with a laugh.

Meanwhile, Fred moved over to the painting, which he tapped with his wand. The artwork altered. Colours changed hues or moved around on the canvas, some brush strokes hopping into different positions while others flowed like mini streams. Once finished, it had turned into a portrait of the Weasley twins, smiling out at the world.

"That is just some of what wizards do!" Fred announced. His counterpart in the painting winked.

"Oh, no, no. I mean like high," she tried to explain, not realising that they didn't have a clue what she was on about.

Cassie raised a cynical eyebrow, but as she turned to the painting once again there was very little she could do to deny their claim. "Oh, wow!" she exclaimed, pressing her hands to her head as if trying to make sense of it all. "Oh, wow, that's insane!" she laughed, not really sure what else to think.

"So there are a lot of wizards in England, then?" she asked.

They laughed at her reaction as it finally hit home they were indeed wizards.

"Yes," they answered in unison.

"There are quite a lot of us," Fred added.

"Enough to have our own government and all," George contributed.

"Obviously we hide away from muggles."

"But there's no need to hide it from you here, luv."

George and Fred grinned at her.
