Kadaj Arrives Out of the Light into the Storm
Who: Kadaj, Anakin and Ayla
When: Day Nine, evening?
Where: Begins in the Lifestream, then by the welcome tablet, then inside...
Why: Kadaj arrives (Worship Him, haha)
Rating: G (I guess)
Status: Complete

Surrounded by the one apparent constant of the Lifestream, the seemingly unbreachable white light that was at once everything and nothing, Kadaj recreated yet again his first visit to Healin Lodge, his first confrontation with Shinra...

Kadaj paced. In both the room from the past and paralleling his duplicate in the pristine atmosphere of the Lifestream.

The room he had been in seemed pleasant, with sunlight filtering in and cooled air making the environment as comfortable as possible for President Rufus Shinra of the Shinra Power Company.

But the two Turks on the floor, writhing in pain as they attempted to get up unsuccessfully, found no comfort at all. Did they harbour mental anguish at their defeat by Kadaj, or was it all physical torment for the time being?

Kadaj paced, moving from stream of light to shadow and back into the light.

Rufus didn't see him move. A blanket softly contouring his body in the wheel chair formed a hood over his head, partially shielding his eyes. He knew Kadaj paced because of the alternating breakage in the light stream hitting him. The blanket gave him something of the look of a monk but he was definitely not a holy man. Though his suit was hi-style and clean creme-coloured, the black stain of the disease, Geostigma, made a blotch on the back of his otherwise pale hand.

The scene continued to play out, uninterrupted by the pacing real Kadaj, until the point where Rufus had commented there would be no more lies. Out in the white light, Kadaj merely had to think to freeze his own private view into his past. He moved into the recreation of the lodge, along the way pushing one of the Turk's heads out of his way none-too-gently with his black-booted foot. The head separated from the body sans blood, and rolled across the floor but Kadaj paid it no heed. Both Turks vanished from the recreation, save for the red-haired head, which opened its eyes and blinked.

Kadaj stared at himself and Rufus, one standing and the other with bowed head beneath the blanket, looking something like a ghost now. How had Shinra convinced him so easily with the lie about no lies? Kadaj had studied both Rufus and himself in stasis many times by now, without gleaning any definitive answer from the entire interrogation. Well, he needed to try something different. He sent his own form away to pace so that he cast alternating light and shadow on himself while he performed what had happened next. Kadaj knelt down in front of the president, seemingly prostrating himself like a penitent before the wheelchair. He knew his pupils formed into Jenova slits. He knew Sephiroth had flashed over him in a quick transformation, having seen the face of rage and hate several times.

A cold realisation overcame him, something that said this had been Sephiroth's will and not his own all along--

Kadaj leapt to his feet more swiftly than a cat but he stopped abruptly.

"What the..."

Never before had the Lifestream changed his virtual location without his commanding it. Maybe he had turned into the duplicate Kadaj and the other one had done this, placing him into some strange place he had never seen until now. An intoxicatingly dangerous place because the wind howled and cold, raw rain pelted him hard. He raised his face into the storm, as if sniffing, and found nothing holy or magical about the lightning, nothing to indicate it might be created by Sephiroth.

Who made this storm then?

He turned to see a plaque only a couple of steps away and moved in front of it rather than rushing inside. The wind ruffled through his silver hair furiously yet it somehow seemed like a rough cuff from a brother who play-battled him. It almost gave him a feeling of being at home, whatever home might be.

There were words to read:

"Welcome to Mirage.
This is your new home.
Your every need will be fulfilled.
You will have a place to live.
You will have food and clothing.
You will have entertainment.
You will have company.
You will not be able to leave.
You will not kill. Ever.
If you have questions, ask my assistants.
Love,
The Planet"

Promises like a bribe, he thought with a mental sneer as he stepped to the nearby door and went inside. He moved confidently, shaking his head to rid it of the rain like a drenched puppy. His leather clothes were slick with the storm and dripped on the floor. One hand poised on the hilt of his sword, Kadaj stopped to size up the first person he saw. He stared at them in a calm, unblinking manner.

"You there, are you an assistant?" he demanded.

Padme sat on her veranda watching the sunset turn the sky over Coruscant to pink and gold; even the sounds of the heavy traffic seemed somehow muted.

“Beautiful, Isn’t it?”, Anakin noted, surprising her as he entered.

“You startled me”, she gasped, as she turned.

Sitting next to her on the bench, Anakin asked, “How are you feeling?”. He worried so much about her when he was away.

Padme smiled and answered softly, “He keeps kicking”, Looking down at her belly fondly.

Also looking at her belly, Analin grinned and asked, “He?! Why do you think it’s a boy?”

Laughing, Padme placed his hand upon her belly and replied, “My motherly intuition”.

He felt a kick and wondered at the miracle of life…at the love between himself and Padme! “Whoa! With a kick that strong, it’s got to be a girl!”. They laughed together and it felt so good…it was like the time they spent together on Naboo years ago…so carefree.

After a moment of silence, Padme offered, “I heard about your appointment, Anakin. I’m so proud of you”.

Anakin’s face took on a serious look, “I may be on the Council, but…they refused to accept me as a Jedi Master”.

“Patience. In time, they will recognize your skills”, she soothed, knowing her husband’s temper.

Needing to vent, he grumbled, “They still treat me as if I were a Padawan learner…they fear my power, that’s the problem”.

“Anakin…”, she tried to intercede, to soothe him, knowing a rant was coming on.

“Sometimes I wonder what’s happening to the Jedi Order…I think this war is destroying the principles of the Republic”, he raged.

Worried now, Padme had to ask, “Have you ever considered that we may be on the wrong side?”.

Looking at his beloved Padme suspiciously, Anakin queried, “What do you mean?”

Hoping to get through to the Anakin she knew who could be open-minded, she presented, “What if the democracy we thought we were serving no longer exists, and the Rebulic has become the very evil we have been fighting to destroy?”.

His mind apparently already made up, Anakin, snapped, “I don’t believe that. And you’re sounding like a Separatist!”.

Pleading now, and scared, Padme all but begged, “Anakin, this war represents a failure to listen . . . Now, you're closer to the Chancellor than anyone. Please, please ask him to stop the fighting and let diplomacy resume”.

Angry now, Anakin yelled, “Don't ask me to do that, Padme. Make a motion in the Senate, where that kind of a request belongs. I'm not your errand boy. I'm not anyone's errand boy!”.

The air shimmered around him and the word ‘boy’ echoed into a hall that was strange to him. The Jedi knight faced a bank of windows where a fierce storm raged outside…not the beautiful sunset he had been viewing on Coruscant…and where was his Padme? “PADME!!!!!”, he screamed for his missing wife. He drew his lightsaber and began to turn when he heard…

"You there, are you an assistant?"

Turning completely around, he came face to face with a slender white-haired youth.

“What planet is this?”, he asked the youth, gruffly, “Are you so far away from civilized space that you don’t recognize a Jedi Knight?”.

Kadaj swiftly stepped back to attain a stable, prepared stance. He drew his double-bladed sword even more quickly than he moved away, balancing it with full confidence and strength almost like a casual afterthought, but another warrior wouldn't be deceived by this.

The man wasn't a fighter of any sort he had encountered before. He couldn't miss the other's power and some sort of magic almost crackled in the air.

Questions before possible distraction though: "So! Shinra has bribed a new breed of Turks, has he?" he countered. Kadaj held his precious Souba pointing down slightly, seeming almost relaxed.

When the youth stepped back and drew a double-bladed antique sword, Anakin frowned...he didn't have time for this nonsense. He had been transported somewhere against his will and he didn't know if Padme was safe.

"Don't be a fool, boy", he warned, "Put away your antique weapon. I have no idea what you are babbling about...Shinra, Turks. Are they the ones who brough me here? If so, I demand you take me to them immediately!".

His eyes darted to the side where a man made of stone approached them, smiling pleasantly. It was dressed in strange clothing and had what appeared to be two keys in it's outstretched hand. It pointed to the keys and then to each of the men...and then it turned to point to a map on the wall behind them, a diagram showing what was obviously apartments or dorms.

Anakin kept one eye carefully on the boy with the antique sword.

Now the stone man was pointing to a place just outside the door on the map and...walking towards the door, indicating they hould follow him.

"Where are you going?", Anakin asked, "Can't you speak?"

The golem shook it's head 'no'.

Anakin figured he wasn' going to find anything out by standing still, so he followed the golem, "I have a bad feeling about this", he grumbled.

He held his lightsaber in a defensive position as he passed the boy, "Are you coming, White-hair?".

Outside, the wind and rain whipped at his skin and tore at his clothing as he read the plaque.

The Jedi's face grew darker than even the storm raging around them, "I will have a place to live? I will not be able to leave?! I HAVE A PLACE TO LIVE!!!!", he roared, as he threw his hand out and sent the stone man flying far out of sight. In his anger, he followed, felling trees with a single swing of his lightsaber, until he found the stone man rising up and brusing himself off. The foolish golem smiled at him and handed him a key.

"What are you doing?", Anakin growled, "Come with me!". It nodded and followed him. The Jedi stopped in front of the white-haired boy, "What is this?", he pointed to the golem, "Who is 'the planet'? Am I to believe an actual planet wrote that?".

A little sneering smile moved over Kadaj's lips at the words "antique weapon" and "I demand". He simply stood his ground, waiting to see what further actions would be necessary. This was one angry man, Kadaj noted, and such anger told truth; the stranger really didn't know about Rufus Shinra. His eyes narrowed slightly but before he could respond, he noted Anakin's eyes dart to one side.

Kadaj shifted his position slightly so he could watch the wierd-looking man that came towards them, and still stay wary of Anakin. The latest arrival to this strange tableau had an odd face that looked like... stone? Damn grinning rockface and clumsy-seeming rock hands, one which offered keys to them. He observed this thing pointing from keys to himself and Anakin, before it turned to gesture at a map on the wall.

A feeling of bored impatience at the creature indicating they should go outside -- Kadaj already knew what was out there -- but he sheathed Souba for the time being and trailed along just to see what happened. Obviously the arrogant, angry stranger couldn't tell him where they were so he wasn't any more helpful than Stoneface.

But watching someone was the smart thing to do. And Kadaj sure got more than he expected after Anakin's blood-stirring roar. He blinked his eyes with the cat-slitted pupils while trying to see where the golem-thing landed, blinked against the raging rain. He saw Anakin's pursuit and it seemed as if trees fell before the glowing sword. Was that some new form of Materia? No, he doesn't seem to know about Shinra and--

His hand automatically closed around the hilt of his double katana but he kept it sheathed while the other man railed questions at him. The storm wasn't letting up. It seemed to gain strength but it was a thrill rather than something he feared as the wind blasted them.

"I don't know," he roared back. "I just got here!" He glared at Stoneface and grabbed the key from its mineral-veined hand. "We might find answers inside," he bellowed into the storm and turned away to go through the door once again.

Kadaj stopped in front of the map. He glanced down at the new-looking key clasped in his wet leather glove.

Anakin noted the boy's hand on the handle of his sword but chose to ignore it...if that gave him comfort, so be it...it was no threat to him. It was the youth's replies to his questions that truely mattered and those were unsatifactory.

"You just got here?!", the Jedi echoed, "PERFECT!", he rolled his eyes, also taking his key from the golem's hand and returning to the lobby of the building. "E101", he noted, looking at the key, "It makes no sense to go to our rooms. We'll find no answers there". He looked at the map on the wall.

"Hmmm...Library...Computer Room...Restaurant...we need to find an area with the greatest number of people. That way we will have the best chance of finding a sentient being with the answers we need who is willing to speak with us", the Jedi Knight thought outloud.

Heading straight ahead down a marked hallway, Anakin called back, "I'm heading to their Restaurant, Whitehair, if you'd like to accompany me".

Kadaj found his room, F200, on the map just out of curiosity, before he followed the other man in the direction of the restuarant. Going there was indeed the logical thing to do so he didn't mind. He had no objection to being called "Whitehair" since it was true. Catching up quickly, he glanced at Anakin (whose name he didn't yet know), wondering first and foremost about only one thing: "What powers the blade of your sword, Jedi Knight?"

Anakin followed well marked signs to the restaurant, turning to the white-haired youth as they walked, “I suppose there’s no harm in you knowing”, he patted the handle of his weapon, “A lightsaber is powered by special crystals”, he shrugged, “…with a little help from the force, naturally”.

He walked a few more steps and without turning notified the boy, “My name is Anakin Skywalker. You may call me Master Skywalker or, if that makes you uncomfortable, I suppose I can allow Anakin, since we are in a pretty odd situation and you’re not really under my command”.

When they finally reached the doors to the restaurant, Anakin entered without hesitation…he stood for a moment and surveyed the large room and the people eating and moving about. Most tables had 3 or 4 persons…not great for his immediate need. His eyes settled on a table with a beautiful young woman with long blonde hair and an open, friendly face. He turned to his companion, “There, she is our best bet”, he noted, before heading straight to her table.

With a charming smile, the Jedi Knight stopped across the table from the lovely blonde and asked, “May we join you for a moment, Miss? It seems my friend and I are lost and we’d be so grateful if we could ask you a few questions”. Not only did he give her his great big puppy dog eyes, he used the force to persuade her also…although, something in her eyes told him that he really didn’t have to do that.

Ayla had taken care of the tea for Yvaine that morning and checked her cast. Since then, she'd really had nothing to do. The storm hindered her from venturing out to hunt or swim. Swimming brought back delicious memories, however. And she was currently musing on them when two figures approached the table she'd chosen to sit at in the cafe to eat dinner. She raised her blue eyes and smiled at the both of them.

She noticed Kadaj right away. His hair color drew her gaze and her eyes widened slightly. She'd never seen hair that color, not on a youth. It always came with age. She wondered if it were magic that gave him the appearance of youth while he was really much older. Her gaze traveled back to the one who'd spoken, then. He was attractive, even with the scar over his eye. His eyes were also the same color as her own. She smiled and leaned forward slightly.

"Yes, you are welcome to sit if you like." She gestured to the chairs. Her long blond hair was tucked behind her ears and cascaded down her back. She pushed the plate of half-eaten chicken and greens to the edge of the table and interlocked her fingers. "You are new to Mirage, correct?" They had that look. The one where they hadn't quite accepted the fact that they were stuck here. The one where they still thought they would be able to go home.

She felt compelled to help them, as if she would have to even if she wasn't already willing. It was strange and she wasn't sure she liked it. She shook it off and sat back, settling her hands in her lap. "What can I help you with?"

Kadaj listened with interest when the Jedi knight answered his question. In particular, his mind focused on "lightsabre", "special crystals" and "the force".

The force must be like the Lifestream he decided when the other revealed his name. Kadaj took this information in too, without reciprocating with his own name. Not intentional rudeness in this case because so far he did like Anakin. He merely wasn't well-versed in finer aspects of social interaction.

Not to mention that letting others talk often revealed more than the speaker realised.

This was when they went to the table of his companion's choosing. As soon as he noted the direction Anakin headed towards, he focused on the woman sitting at the table. She wasn't like any woman he had ever seen. Not that Kadaj was used to seeing a lot of females with the sort of life he had lead.

He saw she seemed surprised about something when she looked at him. That might be a topic to ask her about. His interest momentarily went to the plate she pushed away from herself. Was that good manners?

"Yes, we are new," he answered and he sat down in one of the chairs, glancing to see if Anakin did the same.

The young woman was even more beautiful close up, Anakin noted as he took his seat across from her…she was kind and gracious too, it was evident in her expression and her body language. “You are very kind to allow two strangers to join you, mi’lady. My name is Anakin Skywalker. I am a Jedi Knight so I assure you that you are in no danger…Whitehair and I just arrived here and”, his eyes looked back and forth, “well, we’re not really sure where here is”.

Anakin looked at the food that the woman had pushed aside and his stomach growled…he hadn’t eaten in quite some time. With all that was going on, he shouldn’t even be thinking of food, but he needed to eat to stay in prime form. He wondered what sort of food they ate here…most worlds had some form of fowl and some form of mammal and vegetables. He looked at the lovely blonde and asked, apologetically, “Would you mind if I ate while we talked?”, he grabbed a wooden man that was passing, “A menu please?”. He was presented with a menu immediately. Patting a small pouch on his belt, the Jedi remarked, “Hope they accept Imperial Credits here”.

After looking over the menu and making his selections, Anakin folded his hands and looked at Ayla, “Do you know how we came to be here and if there is a way off of this planet? Is there some form of ruler here? Do you know why we..”, he indicated himself and the whitehaired boy with his thumbs, “…were brought here?”. He touched Ayla’s hand, “I don’t mean to be rude, asking so many questions, but I was taken away from a wife who was heavy with child”.

"I'm pleased to meet you, Anakin Skywalker." She flashed him a white smile and turned to Kadaj. "What are you called?" She heard Anakin refer to him as Whithair, but she thought that was more a description rather than a name. She knew that shaking hands was custom with some people, but neither man offered a hand, so she didn't either. "My name is Ayla, I am Medicine Woman." She wondered why Anakin told her she was not in danger. Was he normally a dangerous man? He was acting kind enough. She nodded to Kadaj's reply about being new.

"Here is Mirage. A Planet. A world probably unlike your own. The Planet thinks and feels, it controls those men of stone and wood, it creates and destroys whatever it likes, and it makes your room look the way you want. The Planet is very powerful, and so far no one has found a way to leave. The Planet is the only ruler." She watched Anakin order his food, waiting patiently until he was finished. His attention returned to her and she continued to anser his questions.

"I believe you were brought here because the Planet wanted you here. There are many people brought from different worlds and times. Most are different and do not know one another, but there are others who have friends or family here as well." She paused for a moment, wishing the Planet would see fit to bring Jondalar here. She missed him terribly. "The Planet is fickle and does not care that you were taken from family, friends and the only world you knew. I think it enjoys it." Her tone took on a small amount of bitterness. She was in one of the better positions here, she only had Jondalar and her son to miss. But she never would have seen her son again, even if she had continued to live in her own world.

She looked down at the hand that touched hers and her heart broke for him. He was taken from a woman he loved, a woman who was carrying his child. She looked at him with wide blue eyes and shook her head sadly. "I am sorry, Anakin Skywalker. Unless the Planet wishes it, you will probably never see her again." Ayla did not know how to lie. And beating around the bush, softening things, were not in her nature. She told the truth. Even if it hurt.

So being polite was like a game that gained you a smile, Kadaj concluded as he watched the woman's reactions to Anakin and himself. He stared at her continuously, almost without blinking, before and after he answered: "My name is Kadaj."

What Ayla explained about Mirage didn't seem altogether foreign and he nodded slightly here and there during her commentary. He made general comparisons to the Lifestream from his own world until she opined that Mirage enjoyed separating people from their family and friends.

His green eyes focused on Anakin's hand touching the woman's pale one. How strange to exchange such a touch that wasn't a rough cuff from a brother or a blow from a sword. Only Aeris in the Lifestream had been something like this, though she touched him more with her voice and a form of healing energy.

"So Mirage has a Lifestream and you're an Ancient?" he wondered.

Then he imitated Anakin from a few minutes ago, asking for a menu. Not that he had much of an idea about what to order. Back on Gaia, they had either stolen their food or bullied people out of something to eat.

Anakin cocked an eyebrow, so…Whitehair is called Kadaj? Interesting name.. He nodded and lowered his eyes with respect to the woman when she gave her name, “Ayla”, he repeated.

When the woman began to explain that the planet they were on was actually a sentient being who had abducted them because it wanted them here, Anakin could feel his well known temper beginning to take hold…the table began to shake and then all the tables in the restaurant began to shake and all the lights in the restaurant began blinking…the Jedi Knight’s brow creased and his fists clenched. The woman told him that the planet didn’t care that it took him from his beloved Padme and his unborn child…that it probably enjoyed it and that he most likely would never see them again! The tables and chairs were shaking violently now…Anakin was enraged…suddenly, in the empty chair at their table a vision appeared to him and spoke, ”Ani, this behavior is ill befitting a Jedi Knight. These people have done you no wrong and you are frightening them. A true Jedi keeps a clear mind and an even temper so he can best assess a situation from all sides”. The lights ceased their blinking and the furniture remained still…Anakin took a deep breath and exhaled sharply, “Of course you are right, Master Qui-Gon”, he admitted apologetically. The Jedi Knight didn’t feel it was strange to receive a visit from his Master’s deceased Master as he was now a part of the force. “How can we get off of this planet, Master?”, he asked, half knowing he would not get a simple answer. Qui-Gon Jinn smiled as he faded away, “Trust in the Force, Ani”.

Anakin wanted to growl and destroy something, but he kept his temper under control like a good Jedi…he smoothed out the sleeves of his black tunic and looked up at Ayla, “Thank you for being truthful and to the point, Ayla. I appreciate that. I’m sorry if my temper scared you. I’ll try to watch that…I…wouldn’t have hurt you…I don’t use the dark side of the force”.

Kadaj was talking about strange things. Anakin wondered if the boy ingested mind altering drugs. “What is this Lifestream, Kadaj? Ayla hardly looks like an ancient to me”.

The wooden golem placed Anakin’s food in front of him with a smile and left immediately. “This smells delicious”, the Jedi remarked, his hunger taking center stage, “I hope I shall like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. It looks similar to foods we have…only one way to find out…”. He was starving and he did indeed enjoy his food and cleaned his plate.

Ayla smiled at Kadaj when he gave her his name. She nodded and divided her attention between both of them, speaking to them equally as she made eye contact. It was still difficult for her, sometimes, making eye contact. Especially with men. But after three years of not having to abide by Clan rules, she had mostly gotten over it.

The shock was evident on her face, however, when the table beneath her hands began to rattle, and then the other patrons' tables began to shake, and the lights began to flicker. Her blue eyes widened and she glanced around her, then back to Anakin who looked as angry as anyone she had ever seen. He reminded her of Broud whenever he would look at her. Cold, angry, calculating. She shuddered and looked away from him, glancing down into her lap. She heard him speak, but when she looked, he was speaking to the empty chair at their table.

The shaking subsided and she flicked her gaze back up to Anakin as he not only thanked her but apologized. She merely nodded then looked back at Kadaj as he asked her if Mirage had a Lifestream and if she was an ancient. She furrowed her brow because she didn't know what a Lifestream was, and she really wasn't that old.

"I am not an ancient. Not yet. I am getting on in years, however." To the Clan, an old woman was in her 20s. Ayla was only 17, but she also had a 6 year old son that now lived with the Clan. She did everything early according to modern tradition, but late according to Clan tradition. She watched the golem arrive with the food they had both ordered and folded her hands in her lap to watch quietly.

Kadaj surprised himself when he naturally returned Ayla's smile. He simply knew he liked her and he never went wrong following his instincts. The same way that he knew Shinra could never be trusted, this lady could very much be believed. It didn't occur to him to question, for Kadaj never second-guessed himself.

As he nodded subtly at her explanation of what the Planet was doing, their table started to shake. At first he thought it was an earthquake while his body reacted in quicksilver silence, having him leap to his feet. A slight glow emanated from him, originating from the suddenly bright ball of materia concentrated beneath the sleeve covering his left inner wrist. He glanced around, his eyes following the spread of shaking throughout the room. Lights flickered around them. His senses didn't register the deep rumble of earth, however. The sound outside was still from the raging storm and nothing else.

Kadaj glanced at his companions again and his stare froze on Anakin. Remembering the unexpected display of anger when Anakin had sliced down great trees with the glowing sabre, he suddenly understood this was also Anakin's doing. Was the fool going to destroy them because of a tantrum? Would the Planet stop it? Something apparently put a stop to this, since the other man spoke to a chair. Kadaj could see the air waver a bit like a mirage but Anakin obviously addressed someone sitting there. Then all seemed to return to normal with the vanishing of the wavery air.

The man spoke about a dark side of some force. As Kadaj slid back into his chair, still gripping the hilt of his katana, he wasn't so sure this darkness didn't use Anakin. Kadaj no longer displayed any sign of glowing. He understood a lot about using darkness and it abusing him. It seemed Anakin didn't, even if he possessed tremendous power over physical elements. What gave him such powers?

He decided to direct their discussion back to his own concerns and both of them had reactions to his comments.

"The Lifestream is the energy of the planet," he answered Anakin. "It's where the spirits come from and return to. It's where I was when this planet stole me."

He focused his green stare on the woman. "By ancient I didn't mean you're old, Ayla. The Ancients lived centuries ago," he explained simply.

If he wanted to add more, the others wouldn't know since more food was brought to their table just then. While Anakin commented on his own meal, Kadaj gazed down into his bowl of noodles and chicken curiously. He picked it up to sniff the food. This whole experience was different from either eating packets of military rations, stealing food from the people of Edge, or simply relying on Materia to power his jumbled genetic structure. He thought the chicken smelled a little like Chocobo, so did it taste like Chocobo too?

Then he laughed.

This young woman thought she was ‘getting on in years’? Anakin was astounded. Did her race have a short life span? Maybe her station in life customarily died young? The Jedi began to fume…maybe she was a slave like he had been…and his dead mother. His cheeks burned with shame…he had frightened her and caused her to lower her head in fear of him and she had been kind enough to offer him a seat and help him. He cursed his temper.

Anakin’s hand, once again, reached out to touch Ayla, but as her hands were in her lap, he brushed her cheek gently, “I really am a very good man, Ayla”, Anakin soothed, “My temper was for my lost wife and unborn child. I apologize once again for frightening you…”, flowers from vases on every table hovered over to their table and meshed together in front of Ayla to create a colorful and fragrant bouquet, “…will you forgive me?”, he asked, presenting the flowers to her and giving her ‘puppy dog eyes’.

The Jedi Knight listened with interest as Kadaj described this ‘Lifestream he spoke of…it all sounded very peculiar…almost as peculiar as the boy himself.

“This Lifestream sounds strangely familiar to me, Kadaj, although I know it by another name. However, it cannot be what you speak of, because people do not come and go into it and out of it as they wish”, Anakin related, “You say that spirits come and go into this Lifestream…and you were taken from it? Are we to believe then that you are a spirit?”.

Intertwining the fingers of his real hand with his cybernetic hand, Anakin wondered, “Do you know of the Force? Speaking very basically, it’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us and binds the galaxy together”.

She was surprised to feel his hand on her cheek and she resisted the urger to jerk back away from his touch. But he was apologizing. She gave him a tentative smile and was surprised to see the flowers converge in front of her and she reached her hands up to grasp them. She gave him another shy smile and nodded in response to his question.

She turned her attention back to Kadaj as he explained the Lifestream. She didn't know what he was talking about, and had a hard time wrapping her head around it, but Anakin seemed to understand at least to a degree. "I did live long ago, at least according to many of the people here." She wasn't sure how to explain that, but they had already moved on and Anakin was asking Kadaj if he knew what the Force was.

She put her face in the flowers and inhaled, mentally naming them all and going over their medicinal qualities. She lifted her eyes to watch the two men converse, wondering if they had any other questions for her about Mirage.

Kadaj got a whiff of the flowers just then and he moved his chair further from the bouquet. He refrained from uttering "Yuck" but no matter how else Aerith had touched his soul in the Lifestream, the gentle flower girl and Ancient couldn't get him to admire anything that smelled so sickly sweet.

He was going to respond to Ayla when Anakin's comments caught his attention. What the man said was interesting. He nodded, quietly uttering "hnnn," to himself. About to answer this male who made him feel wary and edgy despite his once more assuming a calm demeanor, Kadaj changed course again when Ayla looked up from the pointless, useless flowers.

"Then perhaps you are an Ancient, Ayla. We also call them Cetra, the people who first lived on my world. But I don't think you're one of my ancients. The three of us have come from different worlds, haven't we?" He kept it as simple as possible for them, not getting into how his origins were traced to not one but two worlds. Or perhaps more. He didn't know where Jenova had come from all those centuries ago.

He focused on Anakin. "You don't believe in spirits? Who were you speaking to then, Anakin?" His eyes briefly lingered on the chair where he had seen something make the air waver. There was a half-laugh in his voice which could be construed as mocking: "I didn't go in the Lifestream because I wished; I was killed in battle and thought I answered the voice of Mother.... But yes, energy field would describe the Lifestream and you don't believe that living things are only physical, do you?" Where Kadaj had been, he knew either all was physical or nothing was. All of it was just a matter of perspective, merely an explanation.

Anakin smiled wistfully as he watched Ayla smell the flowers…it reminded him of Padme…she buried her face in the flowers like that and took in their scent. It showed that the woman, like his beloved wife, was full of passion…she didn’t do anything halfway. He liked that. He noted the fact that she said she lived ‘long ago’ and stored it in his memory for later, should he need it.

The young Jedi looked around the room and wondered about some of the people there. “What do you do to earn credits? Are there jobs here?”, he asked the lovely cavewoman. Anakin considered that he could see himself in government, military or maybe he could establish a Jedi Council here on this planet.

Anakin’s musings were interrupted when he could feel someone’s eyes on him…he let his own pale blue eyes shift to the side to catch Kadaj studying him. Then the white-haired boy made the mistake of speaking to Anakin in a mocking tone.

“Did I say that I don’t believe in spirits?”, the Jedi asked irritably before turning to look at Kadaj…the scar along the right side of his face seemed to be getting redder, “Who I was speaking to is my business. What I believe is my business. Your business is to watch your tone when you speak to me or I shall give you a very real very personal demonstration of the Force.

Ayla neither agreed nor disagreed with Kadaj's asessment of her heritage. She did agree that they all came from different worlds, so the idea that she was one of his ancients was relatively impossible. She gave a barely imperceptable nod of her head before returning her attention to Anakin. Even if the young man had a temper, he was more polite than Kadaj, more engaging with his questions.

Shaking her head in compliment to her verbal answer, Ayla began to speak. "There are no jobs that need to be done. And there is no need to earn any sort of credit. Everything is provided. Although, if you need to occupy yourself, there are any number of activities. I am sure the golems would neither argue with you about relieving some of them of their duties if you wished to maintain or serve somewhere within the resort.

She didn't like the way that Kadaj and Anakin were speaking to each other. She was not used to violence between humans. Even if neither of them were human, they appeared human. The same way the Clan appeared human. Angry words were not foreign, but they were rare. She was uncomfortable, and it showed on her face. She was finished with her dinner, and the young men didn't ask her any other questions.

"I should go. I have a patient to attend to. Excuse me." She smiled and slid out of the chair she was sitting on. Taking the flowers she hesitated at the side of the table, looking down on the two men from her height of six feet. "It was nice to meet you both. If you have any more questions, I would be happy to answer them. Good day." She nodded her blond head and stepped out of the cafe, heading for her cave of a room.

Kadaj gave Anakin a sneering look but he decided to not say what he was thinking, which was how could someone without the discipline to control their temper be considered a knight? And after all, it was only Anakin claiming the title of Jedi - whatever that was. No one was there to make his claim authentic.

His pupils narrowed as thin as they could be without vanishing in the green irises. They returned to almost normal when Ayla left rather abruptly. Well, she certainly didn't like him but he could live with that. It was enough Kadaj knew he would be less likely to tell lies to her than Anakin. For if alternating between nasty temper and apologising simply to seem mannered wasn't a lie, he didn't know what was. The true measure of the Jedi revealed itself in the way the man addressed Kadaj and not how he treated Ayla.

Kadaj got to his feet and bowed slightly to her when she walked away, noting she hadn't stated where she might be found to answer those questions. He then gave a slight bow to the other man and also exited the cafe, deciding he should find his room before doing anything else.

His laughter wafted down the hall.

Ayla, weary of Kadaj herself, Anakin figured, had decided to leave; he stood and bowed his head, “Good day, Lady, Many thanks for your assistance”.

He turned and looked at this sneering youth. The manner in which he spoke and the expressions on his face…so grandiose for one so young. This boy was a mental deficient, probably plucked from some planet that believed in inbreeding their royal families or some such nonsense. That’s the only way Anakin could explain an obviously handicapped kid being in possession of such a sword.

Anakin pitied him, but that didn’t mean that he had to baby-sit him. Jedi Knights were not nurse-maids. He made up his mind to speak to one of the rock creatures to keep an eye on Kadaj so he wouldn’t hurt himself on that sword.

When the white-haired boy bowed and took his leave, Anakin returned the bow and watched him retreat down the hallway. Hearing the laughter, Ani sighed to himself, “Poor simpleton”. Removing his own key from a pouch on his belt, he decided to check out his room and maybe meditate for a bit.
