Rest was surprisingly easy to come by inside of the fortress of solitude. After a bit of exploring Clark found a bed, filled with a material that he couldn't quite place. The fibers of it felt out of this world, and yet it was comfortable, almost like sleeping in a sensory deprivation chamber. For once the crickets and the noise of the farm wasn't there to prickle at his mind as he was trying to sleep, there were no restless sheep that he could hear all the way inside of the barn, or the light snoring sound of his father or restless breathing of his mother. There was just peace, and quiet...

And yet that in itself was lonely, and though he drifted off rather quickly in that bed which felt more comfortable than he'd felt a bed before, he would have traded it to sleep back at home again. When he woke, he got a better look at the thing, the shimmering sheet over it, and had to wonder if the bed itself was there in the Fortress of Solitude, or if it was something else created by the planet to make him feel better.

Wandering about the icy cave in his boxers, clark discovered a nook which held a set of worn looking jeans and blue and red t-shirts, the type he commonly wore at home. There was even flannel in there. This, he knew for a fact, wasn't the type of thing that would be present in Jor-El's stronghold. Then again, it wasn't as if he could really go around naked. Despite the fact that his body was well muscled he imagined that the other denizens here would more than likely object to it, and he certainly would be embarassed.

"Kal-El..." came the disembodied voice of Jor-El, and caused Clark to sigh lightly midway through putting on a brightly colored red shirt. "Upon... thinking..." the computer said, as if it meant more 'calculating', but thought better of it, "over the situation for the evening, my Son, I've come to realize that this could possibly be a training ground for you... perhaps you should consider this as an experiment, to show others your true heritage..."

"My true heritage was being born on Earth, Jor-El..." Clark replied testily, not used to having to deal with this sort of things so early in the morning. "And call me Clark, if you really care about me that much. You said yourself, you have no idea who's listening in on our conversation..."

"Kal-El-"

"Clark!" Clark snapped back. "They said I can change this place whenever I want, that means you as well, Jor-El." the youth growled and walked up to the main control panel. Not that he had any idea where Jor-El really was in this place, but it seemed as good enough a place as any to storm up to.

"Clark..." the voice of Jor-El replied, though it showed a clear distaste at the sound of it. "My son, I only meant to suggest that here you could potentially show these people who you REALLY are..."

"I really am Clark Kent, and that's the end of it..." Clark said as he stormed out of his room, slamming the door behind him.

-----------------------------------------------

Glaring a little at the open hallway that seemed like any other resort would be on Earth, Clark began to make his way around the resort. He avoided others, though he may have been seen, until he finally came towards what looked like a barn. In fact it was a little ranch. Not as well up kept as his farm, but it was enough to make him feel a pang of home sickness as he walked up to the animals, looking at them chewing their food.

One of the horses in the stable lightly reared at his touch, but soon calmed down as he stroked it under it's chin, reaching into one of the nearby pails to grab a small treat for it, watching as it happily munched on it. It's teeth looked in perfect condition, and Clark for a moment was reminded of the fact that there was no guaranteeing that any of this was actually real. For all he knew he was hooked up to some machine somewhere, attached to his brain, or this was some trick by a Meteor freak who could read his mind.

"Did you get kidnapped here too, girl?" he asked the horse, not really expecting a reply. "Or are you just like my room, something that I want to see?"

Katara awoke feeling refreshed. She had had quite a pleasant afternoon with a new friend the day before, and she hoped she could see him again some time. He really had been quite sweet. Though a thought occurred to her that she might want to try to find this Temperance woman Miguel had mentioned, she found she really didn’t want to try to escape today. She wanted to get to know the strange horse animals she had seen before. An ability to get used to them and ride them really could end up becoming useful later.

As was customary, Katara spent the first part of her morning getting ready for the day. She styled her hair much as she had done before, with a portion of it tied up, while the rest of her thick, chocolate waves fell around her shoulders. Two loops of hair were clipped to the bun she made of the hair she put up. Today she dressed in a dark blue version of her normal, Water Tribe attire.

When she was finished, she left building E to go to the main building. Her eyes were dazzled by the sight. It must have been over night that the scenery had changed. What had once been a lake had become a vast ocean with a salty scent that teased her nose and a sandy beach. The buildings had changed their outer coverings and were now some sort of white material. The sun was warm on her tan skin. The trees she saw were no longer like the ones before but palm trees. It was beautiful here. A smile moved over her lips, lighting her silvery-sapphire eyes as she moved into the main building for a quick, light breakfast.

When she reemerged into the fresh, salty air she had to restrain herself from running straight to the beach to splash through the water. She could do that later. Katara still wanted to see if the horses were still there, or if the Planet had gotten rid of them with the scenery change.

The waterbender moved to the building that had once been the stable, pleased to see it was at least still there. It was a good sign. She entered it, half expecting to see something other than horses, but they were still there. Just as her eyes moved over a fine steed, she heard a voice, and her attention was drawn to a young man who spoke to a female horse. “Actually, I think they’re real. They may be here just to appease us and not because they were stolen from their world, but I think if they were fake they would look something like the golems instead of living, breathing creatures.” The Water Tribe girl walked toward him and extended her hand with a bright smile. “I’m Katara.”

Clark heard her before she spoke, and turned his head slowly and felt his breathe catch in his throat. For an instant the lithe figure with slightly asian features and dark hair looked as if it might be the girl of his dreams, wandering up the way that she usually did to say hello to him with a bright smile. But as he opened his mouth to speak his eyes adjusted and he saw that it wasn't who he had expected. If she was quick to catch it she would see the slight look of disappointment on his face, which lingered there for a moment after she finished talking, creating something of an awkward silence between the two of them as they stood there in the barn. Clark's bright blue eyes looked away for a moment as he tried to think of what to say.

"Uh... Sorry... for a minute I thought..." his hand strayed up behind the back of his head to scratch his raven locks of hair as he offered a rather charming smile to Katara before letting his hand drop, shaking his head at his own silliness and stupidity. Lana was the world to him, but it wasn't as if aliens or random forces of the universe were going to be interested in her enough to kidnap her the way he'd been, right? Then again, Katara looked normal enough, maybe the rest of the people here really were human, and not aliens after all.

"Sorry, I'm Clark... nice to meet you Katara..." he said, and took her hand, not to hard nor too soft, but perhaps exactly the right amount that he should have. It was something he practiced, not gripping hard enough to hurt someone. As he let her fingers fall from his hand after a light shake however, he began to wonder if she in fact was real herself. After all, how far did the illusion extend? But as he tried to think about that, he shook his head slowly. It was silly to go around thinking that everyone was fake, wasn't it?

"Were you kidnapped too? To this place, I mean..." Clark asked as he turned back to the horse as it nuzzled his shoulder, clearly looking for another treat. "Does anyone come here by choice? Have you ever seen whatever it is that runs this place?" he stopped then, realizing he was asking too many questions for her to answer at once, and gave her a moment to breathe as he leaned down to grab another treat from the bucket for the animal.

Were Katana the type to check another out, or even if she were observing him it'd be hard not to notice the way his firm muscles moved on the inside of his shirt, which was almost too tight, or the way his jeans hugged in all the right places. Still, there was a sense of bashfulness about the young man, as he seemed to have a presence that was more meek than the standard jock or warrior.

Katara was very perceptive sometimes, and this was one of those moments. The look of disappointment that settled over his visage for a second immediately after he had looked so happy had her feeling strange. Maybe he had expected to see someone from home, or he simply didn’t want to see her. The waterbender had never seen this man before. She wondered if he was new, or if she had simply never been in the same vicinity as him all this time. It wasn’t impossible. Miguel had been around the same amount of time as her, and she’d only just met him the day before.

The Water Tribe femme bit her lower lip as her hands clasped in front of her, and she looked away from him for a moment. She felt rather awkward in this position, and wished for a moment that she hadn’t spoken. When he spoke, Katara’s grey-blue eyes returned to him. What had he thought? She must have been right to assume he had momentarily mistaken her for another, perhaps one who he’d met here earlier or something.

When he told her his name, she unlaced her fingers and gripped his hand. “It’s good to meet you, too, Clark.” Retracting her touch from him, she spoke again. “I’m sorry if I startled you.”

Then the questions began. She opened her mouth to respond to the first one, but he had already rattled off a couple more before she could speak. When he seemed to catch himself, she answered. “Yes. I was taken from my own world and brought here. I don’t really think anyone has a choice in the matter, but I have met someone who wants to stay here, along with some others who want to find a way back to their own worlds and times like me. I believe we’re standing on the ruler of this land. The Planet controls the happenings of this place. Did you read the plaque? I don’t think any mere person could have so much power. Yesterday this place looked like a farm, now it’s a beach. I’ve never known any who could earthbend to such a degree- not even a friend of mine from my home.”

Katara moved closer to him, reaching out to stroke the neck of the mare to whom he attended. Her gaze flickered to his face again, and she noticed he was a rather attractive man, though he looked a bit younger than she’d first perceived him to be. “How long have you been here so far?” The waterbender asked.

Clark was often rather clueless, but sometimes he had his perceptive moments, so a light frown touched his features as he thought about the way that Katara was looking at him. Sort of the way most girls did in high school that 'what the hell is wrong with this guy?' look, which made him want to start stammering the way he did around Lana when he'd first met her. A part of him just thought that the best idea might be to burst away as fast as he could at super speed and pretend he'd never met her... but then he couldn't really hide from the world here, now could he?

"Oh... No!" Clark said and his blue eyes looked away from Katara as she looked into his eyes, somewhat bashfully. "I... it's just unusual getting used to this world. I'd thought for a minute you might have been someone from my home town..." Clark's tone dropped off halfway through it and it spoke volumes about the way that Lana not being in this world was depressing to him. While he was good at hiding his identity, Clark had never really been that great about hiding his feelings, even when he'd tried to push Lana away for her own safety.

Clark had no issues about rattling off questions, though inside a part of him felt a little like he'd become Chloe, interrogating the first poor victim he'd found with any information whatsoever more than he had. The dark haired girl seemed to take it rather well, however, and Clark listened to her speak, opening his mouth to interrupt once before thinking better of it, his blue eyes looking down as she mentioned the two of them standing on the ruler. For a moment he considered using his X-ray vision in an attempt to see what was in the core of the earth, but given the rude welcome he'd got the last time he'd tried to resist, he thought better of it. Something to do on his own time rather than drag Katara into... and he was trying to keep his identity a secret... sort of hard to do if he was taking punches which sent him flying...

"I've met people who thought they were plenty of things, from Gods to the next rulers of mankind..." Clark said, shaking his head. "So I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 'Planet' was really some psycho thinking that they were in control of the whole world..." But even after he said it, he realized, whomever was running this whole show seemed to have no problem whatsoever dragging him in and keeping him. It wasn't exactly a bluff the sort of power that was being tossed around on a whim here, and that was a frightening concept.

As Clark came up with the treat he saw that Katara had moved a little closer, unfortunately he'd taken a step towards her as he came up as well, making the somewhat closer distance now a bit awkwardly close. His blue eyes flew open for a moment as he stared at her, not leaving her face though his body reminded him of the lithe form that he'd seen walking in the doorway, and caused his breath to still in his chest for a moment, while the horse to the side munched contentedly.

Finally, after a moment of lingering Clark stepped back and looked away. "er... Sorry, I... I... I didn't answer your question!" he said, clearly trying to change the subject.

"I just got here yesterday, actually... you?"

Katara nodded as he spoke. “I’m glad I didn’t startle you. I’m still getting used to this place, too. I haven’t seen anyone who even remotely resembles someone from home. Maybe it’s easier that way.” She had heard the way his tone lowered, and knew that he, like her, must feeling a similar pain in having had to leave his loved ones without a choice in the matter. “I’m sorry you thought I was someone I’m not, even if it was only for a moment.” She hated being the cause of someone else’s unhappiness, and this was no exception.

“In comparison to one woman I had the unluckiness to meet, this Planet is relatively sane.” Katara said, thinking of Azula. Becoming powerful had come at a price for the woman who became mad with it at fourteen- the same age Katara had been. “As far as I know, if the Planet isn’t just a… well… planet, then whoever is behind all of this really is in control of it. If it were a person, though, it would be so much easier to get home once we found him or her.”

When Clark neared to feed the horse, she realized he was close enough that she could feel his body heat. Katara was aware of the sudden tension in his well formed muscles, most likely from being in one another’s personal space. Silver-blue optics lifted to look at him, and a deep blush began to colour her cheeks as she noted the look upon his chiseled visage. Almost at the same instant as him, the waterbender stepped back and looked away. “I… uh…” She stammered, though he brought up the question she’d asked which alleviated the moment of its awkwardness.

“Wow. You really haven’t had time to get used to this place. I’ve been here for seven days. As far as I’ve seen, there isn’t a way out of this place, but I figure I just haven’t looked hard enough.” Katara decided it might be best if she didn’t think about that right now because it left a bitter feeling inside her.

“You seem really comfortable with these creatures. Are you experienced with horses? We didn’t have these animals where I’m from, though there were a couple kinds that were similar- like the ostrich-horses in the Earth Kingdom(even though they don’t really look anything like this) and the buffalo-yaks in the Northern Water Tribe.”

As she lingered close to him, Clark was glad once again that he had learned to control his heat vision, as he felt his pupils diallate slightly the first time he'd really felt the particular urge to well... y'know. The fact that Katara's face flushed as well didn't help things any, as a small portion of his mind whispered to him in the most wicked fashion that she was thinking what he was thinking. But common sense, or perhaps lack thereof took over a moment later and told him that he was being crazy and had just imagined things.

Clark blinked a little. She'd only been here a week, which meant that many of the people here must have been abducted rather recently. He could see why some people might want to stay here, if he'd had a life like Lex's where his father sought to constantly destroy every ounce of normalcy he could have, he might cherish this place as well. But he had Lana... Lana who wasn't really interested, who couldn't ever accept him for what he was. Clark blinked and realized he'd been spacing lightly through what Katara was saying to him, and came back...

Right in time to stare at her wide eyed as she mentioned Ostrich-horses and the Earth kingdom. She didn't seem like she was crazy, which meant...

"You're not from... my Earth at all, are you?" Clark said, somewhat incredulously. She was from another Earth, or perhaps not Earth at all, but another place entirely. The thought of him being an alien was hard enough to swallow, but to think of whole other dimensions made his head spin in ways that made his father's revelations seem like nothing. Taking in a slow deep breath Clark managed to let it out and try to digest all of it.

"Sorry, where I come from we're the only planet with life on it..." he said, biting back the white lie about where HE was from. "The idea that everyone here might be from another planet entirely hadn't really... occurred to me..." Clark admitted sheepishly, and turned back to the horse, looking for a way to change the subject. "So you've never seen a horse before? My father has some of these, and my neighbors have lots..." Lana's family had a few, but he cut that thought from his mind before it caused him too much pain.

"She seems fairly tame, I imagine you could ride her if you wanted to..." Clark said, noting that there was a saddle and gear for the horse nearby. He looked to Katana questioningly to see what she wanted to do...

Katara wasn’t really looking at him as she spoke because, well, they’d had an awkward moment a few minutes before and she still felt slightly nervous from that. However, when she came to the end of her explanation, she noticed he was looking at her strangely. When he spoke, it was exactly as she had thought. He thought she was strange. “No. I don’t think I am. I’ve talked to others, and everyone I’ve met seems to be from Earth. I don’t really know if I am, though, because my world never really had a name. It was simply… the world, and we only named the four nations. I was from the Southern Water Tribe…” Her fingers twined together again, and she felt like she was rambling. What was it about this guy that made her so nervous? She wasn’t nervous in a fearful manner, but his presence made her feel like she was making a fool of herself just because she spoke.

“Oh. Yeah. I think someone told me before that Earth was the only known planet with other people on it. I don’t think everyone here is from another planet, though. No one I’ve met is from a planet other than Earth. At least you’ll have something in common with the others.” Katara said. “Oh, wait! One person I met told me he wasn’t originally from Earth, but he grew up there with his sister and a friend. I haven’t seen him since I arrived, though.” Max had been a really good person, and a comforting presence when she’d discovered she was stuck here. It was a shame she hadn’t seen him again since that first day when he explained things to her. She would have to go searching for him again soon.

Katara’s attention was brought from her thoughts to her surroundings as Clark began speaking again. “No. I haven’t. Do you think it would be all right?” She asked when he mentioned riding a horse. “The saddle looks similar to those they put on buffalo-yaks to ride, but I don’t know if it would be ridden the same way. If she’s tame it should be all right, though.” The waterbender looked around and saw the nearby saddles. When she approached them, she realized they were only similar, but not the same as the ones she’d seen before. “Do you think you could help me saddle her?”

Clark blinked and tried not to stare to much at Katara's explanation of her world. It seemed rather simple, if there were only four tribes of people. He wondered for a moment if she could understand at all that on his planet there were literally billions of people, so many that it was almost like the grains of sand on a beach. But then she mentioned that most of the people here were from earth, which made Clark wonder if in a way she wasn't from Earth herself. If they didn't call it Earth, or her Earth was more primitive than the Earth that he knew, it was possible. But when he started to think about it that much it reminded him too much of the comic books he'd read as a kid and made his head spin.

And then she said it.

Clark paused, and ever so slightly paled as she mentioned someone from another world. Could it possibly be another Kryptonian? Could it be someone like him? Then again, Jor-El was a kryptonian too, and he was about as oppressive as it got. If there was another kryptonian here, they might be more interested in forcing Clark to embrace his heritage rather than being a friend. Then again they could simple be from another world entirely... it was... possible. "Like... an alien?" he said slowly, hoping that Katara would volunteer some more information about him. "Where was he from?"

As she turned towards the horse he nodded a little and smiled. "Uh, well, she might be a little faster than a yak, so you should be careful..." he said, nodding as she asked if he could help her with the saddle. He'd had plenty of experience dealing with horses, and it wasn't like he had anything to fear from a stern kicking from one, so he took the saddle from her under one arm, his biceps flexing slightly as he held it.

"The important thing is to let them see what you're doing so you don't spook them. Try to keep a hand on her side at all times so she knows where you're at..." he said, touching the horse lightly and then sliding the saddle onto her back, then slowly leaning underneath, perhaps giving Katara an unintentional view of his posterior in his jeans as he fastened the saddle underneath the horse, then grabbed the bridle and a light bit, putting it over the horse, and holding it so that Katara could get on without the horse rearing, though it seemed as gentle as a lamb.

"See, nothin to it. Now just put your right foot in the stirrup there and swing on over her lightly..."

If she’d known he thought there were only a few tribes around the same area, she would have set him straight, but as it was, she had no idea he had even thought that. In the mean time, she did notice the look that passed over his face when she mentioned the one person she knew of that wasn’t originally from Earth. Did he know the boy perhaps? “An alien? I guess it could be considered that. I mean, I guess any being from a planet other than one’s own could be considered an alien. He didn’t know what other planet he was from. He only knew that he was left on Earth when he was a baby. Is something wrong? Do you know him? His name is Max. I think he’s a little younger than I am.” She hoped she hadn’t said anything wrong, and part of her even wished she could take back what she said.

Katara looked at the mare as Clark spoke. “Yeah. She looks built for better speed.” Instead of actually helping her, he did the whole thing himself. That was fine. She watched what he did so she could learn how to do it herself by observation. The waterbender didn’t catch the view he might have given her because she had moved from her position to watch his actions more closely. It was actually a simple procedure, settling a horse, and it wasn’t wholly unlike saddling a buffalo-yak. She knew the next time she was to ride a horse, she could do it herself.

As he held the reins, Katara had her foot in the stirrup a split second before he instructed her on mounting the creature. This was exactly the same way to mount a buffalo-yak and an ostrich-horse. “Mmhmm. This actually feels a lot like sitting on the back of a buffalo-yak. Not much to it at all. Are you going to go riding with me?” The Water Tribe femme asked with a bright smile.

Clark made no noticeable face when she mentioned Max, the stranger who'd been left on Earth as a baby, which perhaps might give something away in itself. After all, what sort of person wouldn't react with shock or awe at such a story? Clark kept tight lipped for a moment and then blinked. "Weird, I wonder how he knew that he was from another world... kind of strange to think about isn't it? Aliens who look exactly like humans?" he laughed a little, trying not to sound too nervous and make small talk about the whole thing. A part of him felt as if any moment Katara was going to point at him and go 'I know you're an alien too, Clark!', but alas, the Waterbender did not.

Saddling the horse wasn't a big affair, and he could feel Katara watching him, seeing what he was doing. He imagined that she wouldn't be asking twice with the way she studied, and if she'd saddled other creatures similarly on her planet it would be a breeze. Now Clark wanted to ride one of the creatures from her world, to see exactly how different it was, but it seemed like that wasn't going to be happening any time soon. Maybe though, the planet would make the rest of the resort change to what he wanted like his room... from the looks of it though, it wasn't happening any time soon.

Watching as Katara hopped up on the horse flawlessly he gave the mare a light pat on the neck and opened the gate for Katara. The horse, well trained, simple ambled out slowly as if it were used to doing this sort of thing all of it's life. At Katara's question Clark paused, and then nodded a little. Best not to think of how it was sort of like the way he and Lana used to go riding some times. Then again, just like Lana he couldn't imagine this Katara girl was interested in him in the slightest, so what was the harm in taking a nice ride? It would at least get his mind off of the fact that he was stuck here.

"Just give me a second and I'll saddle another horse..." Clark said as he walked to the next stall and got the other mare ready. She seemed as docile as Katara's and Clark had to wonder if the temperment was part of the breeding, or just something that the Planet forced upon the creatures. Then again, he couldn't really be sure that the horses, or Katara were real. Sighing a little Clark guided the horse out of the stable beside Katara's mare, watching as the two horses lightly sniffed at one another happily and began to walk side by side.

"So..." Clark said, trying to break the ice once again. "Tell me about your world..."

Katara figured he didn’t know Max by the lack of expression on his features. That was too bad. It would have been nice to know that Clark at least had someone with him with whom he could know and automatically connect because they’d already had a bond. Then again, he might not want anyone else to suffer through being held prisoner on this rock the way she didn’t want anyone she knew and loved to go through this.

When he asked the question, Katara thought about this a moment, but she couldn’t come up with a definite answer. “I don’t really know how he knew because he didn’t tell me how. Maybe alien babies comprehend more and remember more than human babies?” She couldn’t remember anything before she was about three years old, and she’d never met anyone else that could. “Oh! Maybe it just depends on what age he considers to still be a baby. He could have been a toddler, and figured that was pretty much the same as a baby.”

It was sort of strange being on the horse’s back. Buffalo-yaks were wider and a lot fluffier so they could survive better in the frozen tundra of the North Pole. This mare was smaller boned, and her light brown fur, flecked with white patches was extremely short, giving the impression of suede when petting the pelt.

When Clark opened the gate, Katara gently urged the horse forward. Riding a horse was quite simplistic, far more so that she’d first imagined it would be. She waited patiently for him to saddle another mare to prepare her for riding. This man was very well built, and she wondered what kind of work he’d done in his home. Perhaps he dealt with horses all the time, as he seemed skilled in dealing with them.

The two mares started out at a slow trot, to which Katara was accustomed as buffalo-yaks had a very similar way of walking, though they had a heavier gait due to their heavier builds.

How many times had she explained her world to people? She was beginning to lose count, but she wasn’t irritated about having to explain it. After all, they explained their worlds to her, too, and it was always quite interesting.

“My world consists of four nations. There’s the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation which are on their own continents. Though the Water Tribe is one nation, there are three different ones. There’s the Northern Water Tribe in the North Pole, the Foggy Swamp Tribe in the Earth Kingdom, and the Southern Water Tribe in the South Pole where I’m from. There’s also the Air Nomads which have four different Air Temples in the North, South, East, and West.

“In each Nation certain people are able to bend the element of their heritage. I was the only waterbender in the South Pole for about fourteen years, but there were a lot in the North Pole and the Foggy Swamp. The Fire Nation has firebenders, the Earth Kingdom has earthbenders, and the Air Nomads had airbenders. The last airbender in my world is Aang, but he told me that everyone among the Air Nomads could airbend, but in the other nations only some people can bend.” Katara suddenly realized that Clark probably wouldn’t have any idea what bending even was, and a light blush tinted her cheeks.

“Sorry. Bending is controlling the element to do what you want. I can fight and heal with mine, and I’ve seen other people create architecture with theirs. I could probably do that, too, with ice if I wanted. Here, let me show you.” The waterbender released the reins of the horse and gripped the mare’s sides with her thighs. She then proceeded to remove the stopper on the water skin she carried with her all the time. With a wave of her arm, a stream of water began to exit the water skin to float into the air wherever she led it. Silver-blue eyes moved to Clark, and Katara smiled. “See?”

Clark was a little puzzled about what exactly her friend Max was. He certainly didn't remember anything from being a child, which he presumed to mean that another kryptonian on Earth wouldn't have the super human ability to just know where they were from. Then again, perhaps Max had found relics to Clark's ship, and they'd told him about his heritage. It was all too much of a mystery to really unravel here and now without talking to Max himself and seeing. With any luck though, even if the other guy was Kryptonian, he would want to escape as badly as Clark did, and once they had... well... Clark would deal with that when he came to it, he supposed. Thinking ahead and plotting wasn't exactly his strong suit.

As he looked at Katara from behind he tried not to think about how deliriously sexy it was to see a woman riding a horse. Perhaps it was because it inspired images of her riding-... Clark shook his head before he approached to the side of her to draw the thoughts from his mind. He was certainly barking up the wrong tree, and there was Lana to think about... but then she and he weren't exactly going to have a perfect relationship, even if he made it back home this evening, he reminded himself.

Letting his horse trot a little, he relaxed in the saddle the way one might if they weren't the slightest bit afraid. After all, if he got tossed from the horse, or even if the horse decided that it was going to do a merry little dance on his chest it wouldn't hurt him. At the worst it would knock the wind out of him, but he doubted a horse could even manage to do that. Which was nice for Clark because it allowed him to be free and enjoy the ride more fully, and the dark haired young woman that he was with. His blue eyes studied hers intently as she mentioned her world, and the tribes.

It seemed a rather primitive world, from what Clark could tell. Tribes usually meant no actual countries, no technology. Then again, he'd felt a peace with the Native American tribes which had painted the caves which were near his home. Perhaps it was better the world that she lived in, a world without too much fighting, from the sounds of it.

As Clark listened to the story of Aang, however, he looked away. "That's got to be hard, being the last survivor of your people..." Clark commented as he stared off into the distance for a moment, feeling the heavy burden of Kryptons legacy pulling at his mood. He tried to let it go his best as Katara explained what water bending was before he could ask her what she meant by it, watching her intently as she uncorked the jug of water, his eyes widening slightly as he watched her make it dance in the air. Still, he didn't seem as shocked as she might have expected him to be.

"Can you do that to anything?" Clark asked questioningly, "Even the water inside of people?"

“Yes, I imagine it is. He had a hard time with it for a long time, but I think he’s basically okay now. I’m sure it still hurts a lot, though. He has to learn how to cope with these things, though, or he won’t be able to do his duty properly.

“I guess it would have been important to say that he’s the Avatar. In my world, the Avatar is the only person who can bend all four elements, and he- or she depending on the incarnation of the time- keeps balance between all four elements. He’s also the bridge between the world of the living and the Spirit World.

“Four years ago, Aang ended a war that lasted one hundred years. The Fire Nation was trying to take over the world. They destroyed my village, and they tried to destroy the Northern Water Tribe. They lost. The city was big, and the waterbenders were powerful. Aang also joined with the ocean spirit to defeat them.

“A little less than a year later, the Fire Lord and his armies tried to destroy the Earth Kingdom completely to make them lose hope, so they would be easier to conquer. If Aang hadn’t taken away the man’s bending, he would have succeeded because the Earth Kingdom capitol fell to them a few months earlier. Ba Sing Se was supposed to be the only city left that couldn’t be breeched by the Fire Nation. Aang is truly a powerful man, though. Without him the world would be ruled by the Fire Nation.

“Even if Aang doesn’t have the airbenders any more, the rest of the world have become his people, so he isn’t alone. He has friends and we’ve become his family.” Katara looked at Clark when she finished, a light blush tinting her cheeks. She’d been rambling again, and she felt silly.

When she demonstrated her ability, Clark seemed only mildly surprised, but that was all right with her. He may have seen something similar in his own world, or he was simply more accepting of things like this or both. She paled a little when he asked her if she could bend the water inside people, and she looked away from him.

“I can bend anything that has water in it. I can bend the water out of the air if I want. I can make plants seem to move by bending the water in them, or I can pull water from them, but that leaves them dried up and dead. What you asked about is called bloodbending. I can control a body’s movement by bending the water within them. I don’t like to do it, though. I don’t like having that kind of control over another person.” Katara had only done bloodbending a couple of times. Once she had to do it to her teacher to keep the woman from making Aang and her brother kill one another. Another time she had been in a murderous mood, and forced an innocent man who she’d thought guilty to his hands and knees with it. It was her greatest shame.

In an attempt to change the subject she forced a smile over her lips and looked at him. “Do you have any special talents?”

Clark was beginning to think for a moment that he'd been wrong as she talked about the Avatar. From the sounds of things, it sounded as if these were more like Native American nations than simple tribes. Earth had experienced it's fair share of genocide, so as she talked about the fire tribe Clark frowned slightly but let her go on, a light smile spreading across his face as he listened to the way she talked about Aang. He'd been friends with Lana when she'd talked about Whitney, her then boyfriend to know that there was something more there than Katara was openly talking about. Perhaps it was a mutual relationship, or perhaps she, like Clark, was attracted to someone who never knew it. Clark paused for a moment, and then couldn't help but comment.

"Aang sounds like he must be very special to you..." he said, his eyebrows raised in a suggestive manner as his blue eyes studied her face to see if there was perhaps some indication that she was interested in the guy. If not, a little teasing never hurt, if so, it was good to know, because he felt... what did he feel? Was it just attraction in a physical sense, or was it because she looked like Lana, or was it something else entirely?

She could learn his secret, Clark realized. On her world, he would be special in his own way, but he wouldn't be locked up and studied somewhere... he'd probably be revered as a proud warrior rather than a freak who had powers and wasn't even really meant for the world he was on. A part of him leapt at the idea, and he felt his heart begin to race as he looked at Katara with a new found optomism, when he realized that she'd not even really expressed the slightest romantic intention in him. She was just being nice, and from the sounds of things, she was really interested in this Aang guy.

"Sorry to bring it up..." Clark said, noticing the way that she got somber as she talked about blood bending. He'd thought that maybe it would be something of a novel idea, or something that she would think was possible but had never tried. From the looks of it she had indeed tried it, and the experience was unpleasant. Clark had experienced his own fair share of unpleasantries when it came to his powers, and what sort of havoc they could cause. Hell, when red kryptonite was around him he turned into the world's biggest asshole...

As she looked to him and asked him about powers, Clark just laughed it off. "Where I come from, people don't usually have special powers like that... most people just do normal work, and lead boring lives..." Clark replied, chuckling a little and looking away from Katara and then back at her. It wasn't really a lie, just a deception... but he couldn't just... come out and tell her that he was some freak alien from another world... could he? A part of him longed to say something, but in the end, the habit of staying quiet won out, and Clark instead looked down at the horse as it trotted along beside Katara's.

"The people that do have special gifts on my world are usually hunted down by scientists and put inside laboratories and cages so that they can be studied, so normal people can figure out how to use their powers to benefit society..." Clark's voice sounded somewhat sad when he said this, it was clearly a practice he didn't agree with.

A soft smile spread over her lips at Clark’s comment. “Yes. He is. Aang and I were together before…” Her smile faded. “…before I was taken here. I don’t know what’s going to happen to us now. I have to find a way back home. I was helping the Earth Kingdom recover from the war, and I know everyone I miss misses me just as much if they even know I’m gone. I don’t know how much time has passed in my world even though only seven days have passed for me. I don’t know if anything is going to be the same when I make it back, though. That thought frightens me. What if when I get home…” Katara couldn’t say it. She couldn’t voice the horrible thought that when she got home everyone she’d known and loved might be gone. It had been so horrible for Aang when he’d gotten out of the ice burg only to find out his people had been wiped out completely one hundred years earlier. Even if it would be a smaller scale for Katara- being just her friends and family and not her entire culture- it was still a terrifying thought. Losing her mother had hurt so much; she didn’t know if she could lose anyone else so suddenly.

“It’s all right.” She said consolingly. “It’s just a bad memory. I suppose a question like that would be a natural thought from anyone who knew bodies had water through them, but didn’t know the limit of waterbending. I set my own limits. Besides, bloodbending is only possible when the moon is full because that’s when a waterbender’s ability is at its peak.” Katara added.

The waterbender looked to the man who rode a mare beside her. Tyler had told her before that people on Earth couldn‘t do things like bending. “Just because someone can’t bend, doesn’t mean they’re not capable of great things. Not everyone in my world can bend, but many of them are highly skilled in specific arts, and every bender has weaknesses that can disrupt their ability.” Her gaze studied his features, and thought slipped into her mind that he was keeping something to himself, but she wasn’t quite sure.

Clark’s last remark had her wondering if he was one of those who had to hide as to not be taken into custody like that, or if he was simply an activist against it- maybe both. Katara didn’t voice these thoughts because he hadn’t offered to share, and she didn’t want to push him. “That sounds horrible. In my world everyone helps each other, whether they’re a bender or not. I think that’s a greater benefit to society than trying to harness powers and torture people in order to do so. The waterbender did offer one ray of light on her thoughts, though. “I haven’t found a single person here yet who would harm someone with special powers if they arrived on this Planet.” Her smile became warmer.

Clark felt a sudden icy stab hit his chest as she confirmed what he'd been thinking, and his blue eyes looked away for a moment as she confirmed it, as if perhaps afraid that she might catch it in his eyes. He felt ashamed, not because he'd done anything wrong, but because he'd been checking her out, when she was trying to get home to someone that she cared about. He winced a little as she talked about the fact that she might not get back to see the person that she cared for. He could only imagine how he'd feel, if Lana truly wanted him the way that he wanted her, how crazy he would be to find some way off of this rock to go back to get to see her... Katara must have been feeling the same and it made him feel all the worse until finally he turned towards her, somehow seeming a lot more mature than he had just a few moments ago, giving her a comforting smile and looking at her with the confidence of one who'd seen more things than he was telling to her.

"I'm sure that you'll be able to find a way to get back to him, Katara... and I think if he's the sort of person that deserves you, that he'll be waiting for you, no matter how long it takes." Clark replied firmly. "If... there's anything... at all that I can do to help you get back home... let me know."

He got quiet then, perhaps lost in his own thoughts, listening to hers about how even the smallest person could change the course of destiny. "I think being normal is actually better. I mean, if you have these gifts, that no one else has, then you almost sort of have to use them to help people, and fight for what is right. You can't just... relax..." the way he said it spoke volumes about how he felt about people with special gifts, and was probably a little to telling about the fact that he might have been hiding something himself. Still, it was pretty clear that Clark wasn't going to be volunteering any information on the subject unless it was absolutely necessary.

"It is pretty horrible, but people on my world are scared of what they don't understand. Things like 'magic' without having a real explanation of why it happens causes them to freak out, and anyone who has abilities that they can't empathize with themselves tends to become more of a monster than a real person to them, so they don't think about it like experimenting on one of their friends so much as just.... a creature."

At her last comment Clark gave her an uneasy smile, but it was clear he wasn't convinced. "Maybe the planet only selects good people... but I think anyone, under the right circumstances could be dangerous..." Clark replied quietly. "Even normal humans when pushed can do horrible things... If you had the power to do anything you wanted when someone else didn't... well, it'd be even easier to do those things without any consequences for you..." It was something that scared Clark about his own powers. Jor-El wanted him to lead the planet, to guide mankind into an era of peace.... by ruling them with an iron fist. The very idea of it sent chills down his spine.

“I hope so, but if time passes more quickly for him than it does for me, I don’t want him to be alone and unhappy. If a lot of time has already passed, I hope he finds someone to love. I’m still going to try to find a way back, though. I have family and friends in my world who I know will miss me, and if only a week has passed since I left, then it’ll be all the better that I get back soon.” A sickening feeling settled in the pit of her stomach at the thought that she might really never be able to leave, that she would be stuck here for the rest of her life, but she couldn’t give up hope. She had to find a way, even if it killed her.

“Don’t you want to get home, too? I’m sure there are people that miss you and people that you miss, right? We could help each other find a way out if either of us comes up with a plan, or learns about a plan.” Katara offered. Even if Miguel wanted to stick around here, she didn’t, and she knew most others wouldn’t want to stay, either.

The waterbender looked at Clark, her brows furrowing. “Why wouldn’t you want to relax and help people, even if you didn’t have a special power? I use my waterbending to help people, and Aang uses his bending to help people. My brother, Sokka, doesn’t have the ability to bend elements, but he tries his best to help people when he feels he can.

“I think I know what you’re saying, though. Sometimes it’s nice just to relax, but if you have an ability that greatly helps people, you can’t just leave them to fend for themselves. I made a promise to myself, though. I will never ever turn my back on people who need me. I just can’t. Even if I couldn’t waterbend I would find a way to help.”

Katara thought a moment on what he said. “Yes, I can understand why people would feel that way in your world. Sometimes my brother has felt weak in comparison to Aang, Toph, and me. Toph’s an earthbender we’re close with. Humans generally don’t enjoy feeling weak and powerless. When there’s someone around who has the ability to be greater and stronger than them, they might freak out about it and find any way they can to make themselves look stronger in comparison. Often they do this by turning others against the gifted person. I’ve seen it happen on my world, too.”

The Water Tribe femme frowned as he spoke once again, remembering that horrible day when she met her mother’s murderer. “I almost killed someone when I was younger. My mother was killed in a Fire Nation attack on our tribe because she claimed that she was the last waterbender there to protect me. The current Fire Lord helped me find the man. I was filled with venom and hatred, and when I saw him…” Her eyes were downcast as she spoke. “It was raining and used my waterbending to freeze the water and form ice spikes of sorts. I was going to fling them all at him to kill him, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t do it. I never discovered if I was weak for not having the guts to end him, or if I was strong for being the better person and sparing him. The man was so pathetic, though. I… I don’t know…

“Maybe what it comes down to is that it doesn’t matter if you have the power to do something. It’s the choice in the long run to do what you think is right at the time that makes a person good or bad. That man killed my mother, an innocent woman, but I didn’t do the same to him, even though I had the power to do it.”

The day was nice, and the air was warm. She didn’t really want to think about all of these depressing topics at the moment. Getting to know a person was great, but sometimes it brought her down a notch in her level of happiness. “What did you do before you were brought here?” Katara asked.

Clark paused at Katara's words, and smiled a little. "I know what you mean. There was someone that I wanted once, more than anything, but... she and I can't ever really be together, even if I find a way home. So I hope that she can find the right person for her, even if it kills me to think about now..." Clark forced a smile when he looked at Katara again. She had the chance that he didn't, a chance to be special AND get the person that she loved more than anything. He was certain now, if there was any doubt before that he would do whatever it took to help Katara get back home, even if it took nearly all of his strength to do it.

"Yeah, my friends and my parents are probably freaking out right now..." Clark said with a light chuckle, reaching back to run his hands through his lightly tussled raven locks, going from serious looking to a goofy farm boy in a matter of seconds. "I'll do anything to help your plan, and if I can figure out a way myself to get off of this place I'll let you know... so far though, it all seems to be locked up rather tight..." Clark said with a soft sigh.

"What I meant was that if you were helping people all the time, you might not have a chance to relax. When you can only do what everyone else can do, then you're no more obligated to help the world than anyone else is... but if you could save the entire world... make almost anyone's problems go away... don't those problems become yours? Isn't any misfortune you don't prevent your fault...?" Clark said, his blue eyes staring down at the ground as he tried to figure out the right way to phrase it. "It just seems like a terrible burden..."

Clark nodded. "I think it's just a part of being human. Even in school, students that are smarter or try harder are made fun of by other students who don't. Sometimes if they're really gifted they're outcast and called a freak, just because they were born different than anyone else..." Clark sighed quietly. He didn't like thinking about this sort of stuff, because when it came right down to it, he was the ultimate over achiever, without any effort. He'd never had to learn like Whitney how to kick a football over 100 yards. He was born strong enough, fast enough, tough enough to clobber an entire football team without breaking a sweat... but it also meant that he could never really participate in sports either, because it would be...unfair.

Hearing her story Clark stiffened quietly and let her speak before offering his words of condolence. "I'm sorry... I can't imagine what I might do if someone had taken someone I loved away from me..." He couldn't even imagine it, the idea of his father or mother or Lana or any of his other friends getting seriously hurt, or worse, killed, caused his blood to boil. Clark had the ability to kill almost anyone, and he always tried to be mindful of it, but if someoen he knew had really died... he would likely just... snap."

Greatful for the opportunity to change the subject Clark leapt on it, though without his powers in the mix, it was really rather boring to talk about his life. "I'm still in school, and in my free time..." Clark tried to think of something to say other than he beat up super powered beings and saved innocents from them on a regular basis... "I mostly just help around my father's farm. It gets a bit crazy there in the fall..." And Clark began to delve into detail for Katara there the ins and outs of milking the cows, getting up early, helping his father repair tractors or building fences... it was kind of easy when he got started, and Clark supposed that was because a part of him had always dreamnt of settling down on a farm of his own someday... just like his father.

Katara wondered why Clark and this girl he claimed to want more than anything couldn’t be together. “Maybe she’s just confused?” She offered. “Before Aang and I got together, I knew he liked me, I just wasn’t sure what I wanted, but in the end we were together.” The waterbender simply assumed it was something like that, and put her words out there for consideration. Another part of her wondered if maybe Clark had abilities the rest of people in his world lacked, and if that was why they couldn’t be together. Of course, that was silly to her. Aang lacked powers she would never know, yet they were together happily.

“Thank you. I’ll help you however I can, and once I actually discover a plan, I’ll let you know.” So far, though, he seemed to be right. This place was locked up really tight, and there was no discernable escape route that could be found. Maybe she was simply looking in all the wrong places.

Katara immediately thought of Aang, and how he had felt after the fall of Ba Sing Se. He had felt like he’d wronged the world twice by allowing all of this devastation, even while it hadn’t really been his fault. The first time had been when he’d frozen himself in ice for one hundred years, the second when he was killed in the underground city after unlocking his Avatar state. A shiver ran through her at the power of the memory. She was so glad she hadn’t used the water from the Spirit Oasis on Zuko, so she still had it to bring Aang back to life. “I can only imagine the burden it must be, but after the war, my world was mostly peaceful once more. During the war, though, Aang felt terrible about his inability to fully help the people who needed him most. He knew he had to help them, and he couldn’t really rest until he did.”

The waterbender thought a moment. “I’ve never been in school, but I’ve seen that happen far too often. Once Aang went to a Fire Nation school in disguise, and one of the people there didn’t appreciate his creativity, so he tried his hardest to make Aang miserable. It was terrible. I don’t understand why anyone would purposely seek another’s unhappiness.”

Katara captured her lower lip with her teeth. “I guess no one really knows how they’ll react when put under stress like that. It all depends on the person and the circumstances, I guess.”

She enjoyed listening to him discuss the life he’d had on his father’s farm. Just because it was simple life without the action of bending and saving the world, didn’t mean it wasn’t interesting to her. Her life in the South Pole had been simple, with daily routines and chores that filled her days. Life there had been enjoyable, and Katara often missed it. “You really seem to enjoy life on a farm, and I saw how good you were with these horses.” The waterbender said, patting the side of the mare’s neck on which she rode. “I bet you have a good connection with animals, a calming presence or something. You should raise some of your own if you get the chance.”
