Where are we now?
Who: Marcus and Legolas
What: A chance meeting
When: Day 8, morning
Where: Somewhere down the beach
Rating: probably PG
Status: Complete

Upon emerging from his room that morning, Marcus had gazed around himself in stunned silence. Something was very odd. He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes and looked around again. He didn't know this place at all! Where once there had been dried grass in the fields and hills in the distance, now there were palm trees swaying on the lawn below his balcony, and the cry of gulls on the moist and salty wind. Looking back at his dormitory, he found that it had changed its exterior, too, and was clad now in bamboo rather than the thick pine logs it had borne at the ranch. What on Earth had happened? Wearing his black fully-covering Ranger outfit was starting to feel like a very warm proposition. Of course, it had been designed for every climate... Marcus decided to leave it on, and to go explore his new surroundings.

After he had made the happy discovery that the large central building was still the site of the cafeteria, he had a tropical fruit salad for breakfast, in honour of the new resort, and headed out for a walk on the beach. He had a spring in his step as he walked. Despite almost a week of exploring, he hadn't discovered anything around the Dude Ranch that would help them escape, and he hoped that this new location would provide more clues to the nature of the Planet and new ideas for escape. Plus, there was just something so beautiful about the way the ocean sparkled on the sand. He hoped the Doctor's TARDIS had come along.

Marcus splashed and stumbled deeper into the ocean, laughing and shouting with the joy of the warmth and fun of it. Then, he laughed louder at the elf's confusion with his comment. He was feeling very comfortable with the other man, despite the gaps between their cultures, and he felt sure he wouldn't be offended by his laughter.

"What? A rotten egg? Um, it's just something you say. I suppose it's supposed to motivate you to race each other. After all, no one wants to be the rotten egg. I mean, they're so stinky, aren't they?"

Diving under the water, the Ranger came up again with his hair slicked back against his scalp, his face wet. Treading water, he looked back to see how the elf was faring.

"Well, it sure is warm, isn't it? Wonder if that's realistic, or just designed for our recreational pleasure."

Legolas, who was used to being around very serious humans most of the time, was pleased to hear the laughter. The only people who had, in his opinion, laughed enough were the hobbits. The humans were all far too serious, and to hear this man laugh made him happy, as well.

"Oh... well, I would certainly not wish to be a rotten egg, that much is true. It seems an odd thing to say, though."

He shrugged the strange comment aside, for now, though he was sure he would think on it later, perhaps while he entered the state that elves have instead of sleep. Gracefully, he dove deep into the water, holding his breath for a long time and surfacing close by Marcus. His long blond hair was darker when wet, and stuck to his face. He impatiently pushed it aside as he shaded his sensitive eyes from the glare of the sun on the water. Suddenly, he pointed off to the left, seeing something he doubted his human companion would be able to.

"My friend, over here there is something to be seen, I think. It looks to be a cove, and I think I just saw..."

He dove underwater, tugged playfully at Marcus' feet, and started swimming off towards the cove he'd seen. He didn't want to get the Ranger's hopes but, but he would swear that he had just seen a grey body jump playfully out of the water in the cove. Dolphins?

Marcus splashed in the water, swimming deeper and deeper, and farther from shore. He wondered how far across this ocean was. It was definitely salt water, but until they explored, by foot or by ship, there was no way they could really say whether it was truly vast, a smaller sea, or merely a small salt lake. It could wait, though. Right now he was having too much fun just playing and relaxing. He had spent a lot of the last week exploring the areas around the Dude Ranch, and what had he really learned?

Seeing the elf point into the distance, the Ranger looked. He saw what could be a cove, but nothing else of special interest. Nevertheless, it could be fun to see what was over there.

"A cove, hey? Let's check it out, then!"

Slipping into his best approximation of a masterful front crawl, Marcus swam after his companion. He loved the feel of the water around his body, but worried about the ultraviolet content of this planet's sun. How long, he wondered, until their bare bodies burned, the rays magnified by the sea water.

Legolas was already swimming quickly towards it. The salt water stung his face in a pleasant way, like nothing he'd ever experienced in his own home. It was nothing like the rivers or lakes he'd swum in. When he opened his mouth, he tasted salt. But it was warm and comfortable, and he decided he liked this ocean thing. No wonder his people had always been drawn to it.

He surfaced for air close to the cove, and gasped suddenly. Just a few short feet away from him, an inquisitive, small, playful gray whale surfaced and sent a stream of clicks and whistles towards him.

"Marcus! Dolphins!"

He reached blindly behind him, found the other man's arm, and drew him forward. His dark eyes fixed on the whale, who was watching them just as intently. He smiled at did his best to imitate the noises, clicking and whistling back to it. Slowly, it came closer, and let the elf put a slender hand on it's melon.

"You can touch her, if you like, my friend. She likes to be touched, and played with. Shall we swim with her? I have never had an experience like this in all the long years of my life!"

Marcus had been swimming in earnest, and was somewhat startled when Legolas reached back and grabbed his arm. Nevertheless, he interpreted it as a playful act of eagerness and excitement, and he enjoyed the spirit in which it was intended.

Surfacing quickly, he was surprised and delighted to find the dolphin swimming right in front of them. Taking the elf's invitation, Marcus reached out and pet the porpoise's head affectionately. He imagined she was smiling about the attention.

"Wow. She's amazing! How do you know so much about her? Friends, are you?"

Marcus, not afraid of the animal, who was clearly more comfortable in the water than he, swam up alongside her and stroked her wide flanks.

As Marcus petted the dolphin, the elven Prince kept a look out. He knew a little about the sea, mostly from books, but he was pretty sure that they tended to... his suspicions were confirmed when another grey body broke the surface, and came swimming over to them. Legolas held out his hands in welcome.

"We are friends, yes! And this one, he is our friend, too!"

He'd always had an affinity for natural creatures, being an elf, and he was really enjoying himself around these dolphins. They were playful and mischeivious, just like he himself was. He ran his hand over the back of the porpoise, and his hand latched on to the dorsal fin.

"Follow if you will, Marcus!"

The dolphin started swimming, much faster than Legolas could have done on his own. It felt rather like flying. When the animal started to dive, Legolas reflexively took a deep breath and went under water with the male dolphin.

Though he couldn't be called foolhardy, Marcus was certainly willing to try new things, and that included things that came with an undetermined amount of risk. Not to be outdone by the playful elf, Marcus grabbed on to the fin of the other dolphin, and hung on tightly as the porpoise swam after its fellow.

When the second dolphin had shown up, Marcus had felt a little wary. Despite their good nature, these animals were far more comfortable in the water than he and Legolas, and they would outnumber the two companions easily if a third arrived. Nevertheless, Marcus put his faith in the sea mammals, whom stories had always portrayed in a kind light, and held his breath as his delphine partner dove beneath the waves. He hoped it knew that he could not hold his breath as long as it could. He wondered how long Legolas could hold his.

Underwater, Legolas kept his eyes open, which stung the delicate orbs but there was so much for him to see. The female joined her friend and they swam together. The elf was delighted to see that his new friend, Marcus, was clinging on to the dolphin. This was, definately, the most fun he'd had in a long time. He waved over, not sure if the Ranger could see him or not.

Suddenly, the dolphin started swimming for the surface, and he braced himself. In broke the surface of the water and leapt high into the air. Relfexively, he took a deep breath as his head cleared the surface, and he held on to the sea mammal until it reached the height of it's jump. Then, far above the water, he straighened up his body and dove down, splashing down at the same time as his new dolphin friend. Quickly, he surfaced, and looked to see how Marcus fared.

"Well, my Ranger friend... I hope you are enjoying yourself as much as I am."

Marcus had not risked opening his eyes underwater. At the speed the dolphin was traveling, he was worried it would mostly hurt with no gain. Therefore, he was caught by surprise when the dolphin broke the surface and leapt into the air. Clinging to the dolphin's fin as it flew, he took a deep breath then rode the animal back under the water, letting go once they were underwater again. Surfacing and sputtering a bit, he looked for his new friend.

"Wow! That was amazing! I have never done that before! Yes, Legolas, I am definitely enjoying myself."

Treading water, Marcus looked around them, and noticed they had been carried far from the shore. Not too far, but far enough that he didn't want to stay out too much longer.

Playfully, the dolphins started squirting water at each other. Legolas shrugged, decided that when in the sea, do as the sea creatures do, and started splashing Marcus. He supposed it was some sort of dolphin way of showing affection or something.

Still, it was getting late, and swimming was tiring. The angle of the sun was actually past the highest point, which meant that it was well after noon, and they'd been here all morning. It hadn't seemed like that long...

"I think, my newfound friend, that we had better head back. I do not know about you, but I find myself growing hungry."

Marcus splashed playfully back at Legolas. He had no ideas about it being a dolphin way of having fun. He knew it as a human way of having fun. When the elf suggested heading back, though, Marcus was quick to agree.

"Yeah. I'm feeling hungry, too, now that you mention it. I'm also not sure how much strength I'll have left once we reach the shore. These dolphins took us pretty far out."

Turning back towards the resort, Marcus began to swim in a regular stroke, one that he would be able to maintain all the way in.

With a series of clicks and whistles that he meant as a farewell to the playful porpises, Legolas scratched them both on their melons and then turned around to swim back to shore. He was much less frisky and playful on the way back, having used a lot of energy in getting to the dolphins, and then playing with them.

Finally, he swam close enough to the sandy beach that he could touch the bottom with his feet. He stood, the salty water running down his body as he waited for the Ranger to come on shore, as well.

"I have come to a decision about dolphins, Marcus. I have decided that they are every bit as fun as I had heard they were. I hope to see them again soon."

Marcus reached the shore not too long after Legolas, and strode out of the water onto the sand. The sun was warm, and he enjoyed the way it dried his skin' nevertheless, he was worried about damage from its ultraviolet rays.

"As do I Legolas. That was a lot of fun!"

Laughing and smiling from the joy of it all, Marcus headed for the changing hut, assuming the elf would follow him. He was somewhat tired from his morning's exertions, and wondered what restful thing he might do next.

"So, what are you thinking about for the rest of the day, my friend?"

Legolas, who didn't even know what UV rays were, was less worried as he strode fully naked over the sand. It didn't take long for him to be dry, but the salt water made his hair stiff in a way he didn't really like. It also made his skin itch a little.

"I believe I shall find some fresh water and bathe in it... the salt has made me itchy. Then, I shall eat, and perhaps after that, go to the library or something of that sort, something inside."

He walked into the hut and started pulling his clothing on, sincerely glad he'd come and met this man who reminded him so much of his lost friend.

"And you, my Ranger friend? How will you occupy the rest of your day?"

Marcus dressed himself again in his full Ranger uniform, after drying himself with a towel that had been provided. Despite how much he'd enjoyed being naked, the sun on his bare skin, the water surrounding him, he felt a happy familiarity as he robed himself once more. When you've visited enough environments where venturing out naked is enough to get you killed, you welcome the security of clothing.

"Well, I'm feeling a little guilty about not making a more focused effort to see whether this new environment offers more in the way of an opportunity for escape, but I suppose I did explore the dolphin cove. I think I'm going to have some lunch and then do something restful, like lie by the pool."

Legolas nodded, a slight smile on his face as he clothed himself and strapped his knife belt back into place around his waist.

"Of course... you and that strange woman with the pink hair are planning to escape. Good luck... I, myself, think it is quite impossible, but perhaps you will shock us all and succeed. Maybe then we can all go home."

He reached out and clapped the other man on the shoulder, a way of showing that he considered them friends, and had enjoyed their time together.

"I hope we meet again, my new friend. I enjoyed the time we spent together. May the Valar go with you."

Then, he smiled and turned away, going out the door. He didn't know it, being too caught up in reflection about the time they had spent together, but he had left his bow sitting on the ledge. He didn't notice, and quickly ran off towards his room, and the waterfall there that he used as a shower.

Marcus returned Legolas's gesture with a clap on the shoulder of his own. It was a friendly gesture, and not so different from that of several alien species he had encountere.

"Well, she doesn't always have pink hair, but, yes, we are giving it our best shot. I, for one, left in the middle of something rather important, and I'd dearly like to get back to it. Anyway, I'm sure we will meet again. The place isn't that big, is it?"

Fully dressed now, Marcus followed Legolas out of the hut. He was very hungry and was already going over his options in his mind. He was so preoccupied, in fact, that he didn't even see Legolas's forgotten bow, let alone realize it had been left behind.

"Well, in any case, I wish you the best of luck. I have enjoyed meeting you. You have a similar aspect to one I knew in my own world... I would have you as a friend, if that is acceptable."

He smiled and bowed slightly before turning towards the main building. He felt like he'd made a friend, and as always, he was glad for it. He wore a smile as he wandered off about the rest of his day.
