Day 8
Who: Sailor Neptune and Mamoru
What: Arrival
When: Early Afternoon
Where: On the beachfront
Rating: PG
Status: Complete!

Dying had hurt more this time. That was Sailor Neptune's first thought as the world collapsed into blackness and she felt her life bleed out. Maybe it was because it had taken longer. Still, as her soul floated in the blackness, she felt consumed by the feeling of failure. They had failed to protect the Princess. She and Uranus had pulled their last, desperate gambit and it had failed. And she hadn't even been able to hold on to Uranus in their last moments.

She drifted in the void, nothing more than a scrap of consciousness that hadn't quite faded yet. Then, suddenly, she felt warmth and weight again. Could it be? Was she being revived? If anyone could pull if off, it would be Sailor Moon. Neptune felt herself smile. That girl really could do anything. It would all be all right, and she could reunite with her beloved!

Something twisted sharply and she felt herself hit ground hard. Sandy ground. That wasn't right. They were in downtown Tokyo, not near the beach. But she could feel the gentle rhythm of the tide pulling at her and hear the sounds of the waves. With a nearly inaudible groan she pushed herself up and looked around. This was definatly _not_ Tokyo. She checked and realized she was still in senshi form. Well that was good at least. If something bad happened, she could at least fight. She looked around for someone who might know what was going on.

It had been a strange day yesterday, and that was an understatement. He simply was not used to the persistance that the girl yesterday had shown, and he wondered if life was like that here. In that case, he decided, he should just hide in his room. He did not want to deal with that odd girl again, nor anyone else like her.

Eventually, of course, hunger had driven him out. Cautiously, he made his way to the restaurant. No one assaulted him, even though he saw many people. This made him feel better about the whole thing, and he had an excellent breakfast of curry rice. He'd gotten very used to that while being a college student, and he needed that familiarity right now.

After breakfast, he headed outside. He wanted to see more of this place. Once there, he blinked slightly. He was quite sure that yesterday, there had been stables and horses around. It was quite different now. This was a very strange place, if it changed everyday like this. He shrugged and wandered down to the beach. He hadn't been to a beach in a long time. He would even admit that it was pleasant.

He saw someone sitting up, looking dazed and confused. She looked familiar to him, somehow, though he was still fairly far off. But something about her pulled at his half-buried memories that had recently been freed by the power of Princess Serenity's crescent moon wand. He frowned, stopped, and stood still, just looking at her.

Hearing the soft crunch of feet on sand Neptune quickly stood up and looked around. She caught sight of someone else on the beach, and carefully edged closer to see if she could figure out who it was. Her vision still was a little off, from the sudden bright sunlight, so she blinked a few times to clear it.

When her vision cleared, she couldn't believe her eyes. Of all the people she expected or hoped to see, Mamoru Chiba was the very last she would have thought of. And he looked sort of different that she remembered, but it had been a while. And he was at least a familiar face in an unfamiliar place.

"Mamoru!" she called, as she jogged towards him. "Where are we? Where's the Princess?"

He was shading his eyes, not having been around the sea very much. The sun glinted off the waves and dazzled his eyes, so that he couldn't see many details about the girl, although he was fairly sure she was a female. Something about her shadow, though, it was familiar to him in a way he had not expected.

Gradually, he started moving again, and met her halfway. Dim memories stirred within him, of himself dressed up in a odd sort of outfit, Prince...? And a woman by his side. In front of them, a row of girls, princesses, and among them...

He stopped in his tracks as she got near enough to see clearly. He hadn't been wrong. Very carefully, acting on memories from long ago, the man dropped into a bow in front of her, respectful, not obsequious. Respecting her position.

"Princess Neptune. Welcome."

Neptune backed up a step as Mamoru bowed. She bowed back, a proper greeting bow, a bit confused.
"No" she said, with a slightly nervous laugh. "Just Sailor Neptune right now. No need to bow." She shook her head again. This was getting weird.

"Where are we?" she asked again.

He looked slightly taken aback as she spoke. The girl he had known back on the Moon Kingdom was different somehow. It was obviously the same person, though, and this confused him.

"Very well, then, Sailor Neptune. I have some bad news for you. You've been taken from Earth. We're on a planet called Mirage, as far as I can tell."

His own understanding of the situation was still a little hazy, actually. He'd spent most of the previous day hiding in his room, hoping that he could stay away from the strange pink-haired woman who had attached herself to him.

"Mirage?" she said, taken aback. "But I assumed that Sailor Moon... The Silver Crystal..." Something was very, very wrong here. There was a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach

"Where's everyone else? Sailor Moon, the others..."

He frowned at the mention of Sailor Moon. It didn't really seem fair to him that he'd only just realized his feelings for her, and then she was taken away.

"Yes, Mirage. I don't think Usagi has anything to do with this, Neptune. I thought it was the Dark Kingdom at first, but..."

His voice trailed off at he looked at her for a long time and then abruptly turned around.

"I'm going to do my best to explain this, but these was this plaque I read that helped me a lot. Hopefully, it will help you, too."

Neptune felt a cold chill settle in the base of her spine. If it wasn't Usagi... She focused her energy and called in the Deep Aqua Mirror.

"Plaque?" she asked, gripping the mirror tight enough to make her knuckles go white under her gloves. "What kind of place is this?"

It was odd, talking to this girl. Like he knew her, but he didn't. He only vaguely remembered her from the past... or future, actually. His past and his future. Honestly, it gave him a headache trying to figure it all out sometimes.

"I don't know. I just got here yesterday. It looked like a ranch, and now it looks like a beach."

He shrugged and headed towards the building where he'd seen the plaque. He would do his best as tour guide, but hardly knew where he was himself.

Neptune followed him silently, looking around as she did so. It looked like a perfectly normal beachfront to her. The sea even felt right. This was getting stranger and stranger by the moment. And the cold feeling in the base of her spine was spreading to her whole body. She'd asked about the others, but in truth there was only one senshi she was worried about. She glanced down at her mirror. She could find out. The talismans were linked, so she could use the mirror to find the sword, and by extension Uranus. But she couldn't bring herself to do so. Not yet.

"How... how long have you been here?" she asked, as something clicked into place. If Mamoru had been revived at the same time she had, why did it seem like he knew more?

The young man was perfectly happy to walk in silence. He wasn't a big talker, actually. But he knew that she would have questions, and he would have to do his best to anwser them. Too bad he hadn't had the same, but that was just the way things happened. The little he knew, he'd picked up by himself.

"I've been here since yesterday... and I'm not really sure why you're here. You're from my future, aren't you?"

He looked at her curiously, wondering. He didn't remember much about her, really.

Part of her wanted to just ignore him, to just break out running, as fast and far as she could. Run away from what he was implying, find some way back home. But she knew that wasn't possible. You couldn't run away from things.

"Yesterday." she said "But the Dark Kingdom was destroyed two, three years ago Luna said." She shook her head. "That can't be right. You don't remember the Messiah? Neherenia? Your daughter?"

She was silent for a long moment. "It doesn't matter, does it? We're here, and..." she paused again. "No one else is here are they?" she finished quietly.

He looked at her with a confused expression, not bothering to hide it. If it offended her, well, it offended her. He'd never particularly been one to try and hide things out of fear of that particular outcome. It put some people off, of course, but it didn't worry him. Anyone worth the effort would accept him for who he was.

"Yeah, yesterday. Who? What? I have a daughter?"

The last one had his eyes widening, as any man would do if someone said something like that. Panic went through him.

"I'm not even married!"

He pushed open the door and pointed to the plaque.

"Read that. Yes, you are correct. We're here, and I haven't seen anyone else that I know here. We're alone, there's only strangers here."

"Well, you did give Usagi a promise ring before you left for America" Neptune said, trying to distract herself. "Though I guess that was a different version of you or something. Because I remember you, but you don't remember anything I do." She gave Mamoru a small smile with little actual happiness behind it.

"But yes, you do have a daughter. Or will. Or something. Sweet girl, loves you to death."

Neptune followed him into the room and picked up the plaque and read it. And then read it again. And a third time.

"We can not leave" she said quietly to herself, her voice cracking slightly. "No." she said a bit louder. "No, this can't be." She held her mirror in both hands and looked into it. "Space Sword. Find the bearer of the Space Sword. She has to be here."

The mirror clouded over for a long moment, and then cleared, showing nothing more than Neptune's reflection.

"Iiiee" she said, sinking to the floor. As she did so her fuku disolved away, leaving her in her high school uniform. "We were supposed to burn in hell together" she said, her voice barely more than a whisper.

He shook his head, and if he hadn't seen such strange things in his life, and especially since coming to Mirage, he would have thought she was completely and totally insane. Even so, it was hard to swallow. But if it helped her to talk about it, well, he could put his doubts aside. Anyways, everything he remembered about Princess Neptune said that she was not the type to lie.

"A daughter. With Usagi. Who I'm going to marry. This is all a little hard for me to take, since I only just discovered that I'm Prince Endymion."

He glanced over at her as she read the plaque, pondering how odd it felt to be able to talk to someone who knew who he was. Neptune, he realized, was the first person he'd ever admitted to being Prince Endymion, except of course Usagi when she had awakened his memories. But his pondering changed to concern as she fell to the floor, and he went down onto his knees beside her.

"Princess... I know it's a lot to handle, but you can do it. Anyways, yesterday I was alone, and now you're here. Perhaps, the planet will show mercy and bring our friends."

He glanced down, refusing to show how much he wished that would happen. To see Usagi again right now, that would be the best feeling in the world. And maybe it could happen, since Neptune was here. There was a chance, wasn't there?

"I'm no princess." she said softly. "I was a warrior. Now..." She took a deep breath to steady herself.

"Just call me Michiru." she said, her voice sounding dull even to her ears. She stood slowly. "I'm sorry, I was just... I apologize. I shouldn't let myself get carried away like that. I'm hardly the only one here who's been separated from their... from people they care about."

Her eyes narrowed as she looked at the plaque again. "This... Planet has a lot to answer for."

"The way I remember you, you were a princess. You and all of the other Sailor Senshi. And... of course, Usagi..."

He sighed and rose to his feet, knowing that she probably didn't want his help. Even though, to his surprise, he wanted to give it to her. Of course, he was Tuxedo Mask, and she was a Sailor Senshi. It probaly wasn't that surprising that he should be drawn to protect her.

"Michiru. And, of course, you can call me Mamoru. And now there's two of us. Maybe more will come."

He glanced over at the plaque himself, having more time to fully read it. The last time, he'd been being harassed by the pink haired girl. It still didn't make that much sense to him. He sighed and turned away.

"We need to find your room, Michiru. Last time, a golem came and gave me a key. I don't know if that's how it happens all the time, though."

As if summoned by his comment a golem entered, holding out a room key. Michiru let out a short, humorless laugh and took it with a barely polite bow.

"Service" she said bitterly, as she looked at the key. "C 155. I assume that's floor and room?" She glanced back at the golem. "Don't suppose the things provide maps too"

"No, but they will point you in the right direction if you ask them. I don't think they talk."

He took her question seriously, as he was in the habit of doing, and waved the stone creature off. This was someone from his own world, someone who made sense to him. Or, at least, most of the time she did. He would show her himself.

"I'll show you. I'm in the A building, and the C building can't be too far from that, can it? Your room is in C dormitory, first floor. I'll show you."

"Thank you" she said and she turned the key over and over in her hand. She took a deep breath and forced a smile. She would make it through this. Right now she'd go along with this. Maybe Mamoru was right and the others would show up.

If not... Well, the Planet had a lot to answer for, and she'd start demanding answers.

"I do apologize for my behavior. Much has happened in a short time, even before coming here."

"You're welcome."

He led the way out into the open air again, towards the dorms. He knew this had to be hard, but, well, at least he was here, and not the girl who had greeted him.

"No, it's not a problem. I left during a time that was very... busy. I had just found out..."

Long habit made him cut off his words, though, even with her. He just simply was not really used to talking about this with, well, anyone. He found C dormitory fairly easily, and pushed open the door.

She favored him with a long, thoughtful look. His was different than how she remembered him. Less... self-assured. It was almost endearing.

She placed a hand lightly on his arm. "I am sorry. I can't imagine what that must be like." She moved past him and into the room. Her breath caught in her throat as she looked around. It looked exactly like her room at home. Every last detail of furnishings was perfect, right down to the water stain on the bedside table. She walked over to the bed in stunned silence and fingered the corner of the covers. She could feel her eyes start to sting, but she refused to cry. Not here, not in front of someone else. She closed her eyes for a long moment, and then opened them again. Turning back to Mamoru she said "This planet has a nasty sense of humor."

"Yeah, but I think you can imagine, actually. I think you can imagine very well, since you're in the same situation."

He smiled at her and peered into her room, curious about what it would look like. It obviously affected her, but he couldn't see why. It just looked like a normal room to him. But it wasn't any of his business.

"Do you... want me to leave you alone, Michiru?"

He didn't really want to leave her, since she was a link to his former life, but he had basically run off to be alone the first opportunity he'd gotten, and he couldn't blame her if she wanted to do the same.

Part of her wanted nothing more than to be left alone. Part of her wanted to cling to anyone or anything that reminded her of what she'd been torn away from.

"No." she said finally. "I'll be alright. Perhaps you could show me around? We could talk or whatever. We at least know the same people." She let out a short laugh. "Well, sort of at least. And about not being able to imagine... I meant being ripped away when you'd just figured out who you were and such. I _know_ who I am and such."

He nodded and smiled at her a little, glad in a way that she hadn't sent him away. Of course, he would have gone if she had. He liked being alone too much not to respect it when someone else wanted to. But he knew her, and it was just good to have someone he knew around. Not that he and Princess Neptune had ever been the best of friends, but they had at least been aquainted.

"Right, then. I think the first place I should show you is the restaurant... it will give you whatever food you order, anything at all. Also, this room? It can look however you want it to."

He'd discovered these things through trial and error throughout the evening and night last night, and this morning at breakfast.

"Mmmm" she said, noncommittally. As hurtful as it was that the room was so much like her one at home, it was a island of familiarity in this unfamiliar land.

"Lead on then" she said, pulling the door shut behind her. "So the resturaunt will give you anything you want, the rooms will change to what ever we want... Will this planet provided _anything_?'

"Yes, that's right. It will give you anything you want to eat. Just tell the waiter thing and it will bring it."

He frowned at her question thoughtfully before speaking.

"I know it gave me clothes, and food... I don't know if it will give you absolutely anything. But I noticed there's a lot of things... there's a library and... I guess it seems like the planet doesn't want us to get bored."

He shrugged and led the way out of her dorm building towards the main one with the restaurant.

She followed him towards the restaurant, mentally noting were things were so she could hopefully find her way around without too much trouble. It did not do to appear lost.

"So" she said, as they walked "I know far more about you than you do of me, but most of that information comes through Usagi and Chibi-Usa's sweet, but admittedly biased opinions. Tell me a bit about you"

"That could be. It wouldn't surprise me. I think it, the planet, just really doesn't want anyone to leave. Maybe if it distracts us, we'll be happy. I don't know. I'm having a hard time with the concept of a planet wanting us around, anyway."

He opened the door to the restaurant and headed in. He'd been in here only once, when he'd been driven out of his room by hunger this morning. As she spoke, he looked over his shoulder at her.

"I know next to nothing about you... I remember you as a Princess, slightly older than you are now. Well... about me... I don't know what to tell you. Obviously, I'm not Japanese, I was born American and raised Japanese, but spent most of my life in Tokyo. I'm... well, I was before... a student in college. What else is there to say?"

He gave her the simple version, not comfortable much with talking about himself, and changed the subject as soon as possible.

"Past life memory can be a little unreliable" she said with a half smile. "It's misled me a number of times."

She looked around the restaurant curiously. It looked much like any other restaurant, though with markedly fewer people. And no hostess.

"Are we supposed to seat ourselves?" she asked.

"As for me? Well, a lot of it doesn't matter now. But I am Michiru Kaiou, world-recognized violinist and painter, who still managed to fit being a senshi around that." He wasn't the only one who could be vague.

He shrugged and wandered over to the table, indicating the golems with his head.

"Well, they don't seem to be about to seat us, so yeah. I mean, this morning at breakfast, I did."

He frowned thoughtfully as she spoke. He vaguely remembered Princess Neptune playing beautiful music on the violin, but only because she'd mentioned it.

"Michiru. The name suits you. And you paint, too? Very talented. Being... who I am, I can understand the senshi thing more than most, I guess."

Which was the understatement of the year, probably. He'd been a college student, had a social life, and had to constantly be around to protect Sailor Moon. It had been busy, to say the least.

She sighed very softly to herself. He could have at least picked a table and offered her a chair. Ah well. She crossed to a table, pulled out a chair and sat down.

"There's a lot to remember" she said "Don't worry too much about it."

She looked out the window, silent for a long moment. "I always dreamed of becoming a famous violinist and playing concerts all over the world." she said, still staring out the window. "Once again it seems like destiny has other ideas"

Being who he was, he was oblivious of her lack of contentment with him not 'being a gentleman', a habit he didn't have much use for. Of course, there was a part of him that would do that, the Prince part, but he had made it clear she wasn't Princess Neptune, she was Michiru. Anyway, he had very little practice at being a Prince. It had occured to him that he should hold her chair, but he just wasn't in the habit.

"Alright, I won't."

He settled himself down and looked with distaste at the golem as it walked over to them, waiting for their order. It still reminded him uncomfortably of the monsters he had had to fight as Tuxedo Mask, and he suspected he would never fully trust the creatures.

"All I wanted... I didn't have any big plans to be famous. I just wanted to go through college, get a normal job... I've never had a normal life. I wanted it."

Michiru looked up at the golem and smiled a polite smile. "I would like some shiozake-filled onigiri please. With some tamagoyaki please"

She turned to stare out the window again. "I suppose I never did, as most people would define 'normal'. My parents had me in music lessons since I was five, and my father expected nothing less than perfection in every aspect of my life. But compared with discovering I was a senshi, I suppose it was normal for me."

She sighed and turned back to Mamoru. "But that is the past. Tell me about this place."

After his companion placed her order, he followed suit. He really had developed a taste for certain foods while he'd been a student, and it had carried over.

"I'll have a curry rice, please."

He watched as the creature went away, and then turned his full attention to the girl who was the only link he had to his own world. He barely knew her. But circumstances had thrown them together, and he would do his best to make friends with her. Even if making friends didn't exactly come easy to him.

"Yes, let's leave the past in the past, and figure out the present. I don't know much about this place, only what I've overheard. And, of course, I read the same plaque you did. From what I understand, though, this planet chooses people and brings them here. It seems to be random. No one is really sure why... maybe it's just lonely. But there's no rhyme nor reason to it, really."

He shrugged before continuing on.

"It changes, too. For example, when I came here, it was a ranch. Now, it's a beach. I don't know how often it changes. But all our needs, and a lot of things we could possibly want, are filled. The only thing we don't have is freedom."

She looked at him and shook her head slightly.
"There are things more precious than freedom" she said, more to herself than her companion.

"Maa, there I go again" she said, with a false brightness to her tone. "So random people from all over the world get snatched up and brought here? Strange."

She looked out the window again. She could just see the ocean between the buildings. "Well if it changes a lot I will definatly want to get down to the beach tonight before it disappears."

"Are there?"

He looked at her with a raised eyebrow, and then looked away and shook his head slightly. It didn't really matter, actually. And it might be better if she was right, because they were well and truly trapped.

"I don't think it's just our world, Michiru. People from all over. Not just from Earth, either. It's confusing, but I've seen so many different types of people..."

He followed her gaze out the window and nodded, laughing softly. He loved the ocean, and didn't spend a lot of time near it while he was on Earth.

"If you want, after we eat we can go down there. I haven't spent much time by the ocean, so it would be nice."

She smiled in spite of herself. In some ways he was so much _younger_ than the Mamoru she'd known. It was kind of amusing.

"Other... worlds?" her mind immediately flashed to the Starlights, but she doubted that's what he'd meant. "What kinds of people do you mean?"

He frowned, sorting over the things that he'd seen over the last day, and trying to figure out exactly what gave him that impression.

"I met a girl with pink hair, and she said she was from a place called Wonderland. She talked about some Queen who went around beheading people. I didn't make a lot of sense. And I saw a person with very odd ears, very pointy. And some of the people don't dress like we do. Actually, most of them don't."

It was just a general impression of strangeness that he was trying to get across, but he wasn't sure he was succeeding.

Michiru twisted a lock of her own aqua hair around a finger and gave Mamoru an amused look. "Pink hair? How odd" she said in a tone that indicated it wasn't odd at all.

"Still, I've never heard of 'Wonderland'. It seems strange."

She felt a brief shiver of unease. "These... others. Are they, hm, dangerous?"

He spared a quick glance for her hair, catching her tone of voice, and had the grace to at least look a little amused by his little social faux pas.

"Well, her hair color was hardly the only thing about her that was strange. She followed me around like a puppy dog until I slammed a door in her face to keep her away. And clingy doesn't even begin to discribe her."

He looked up as their food arrived and nodded his thanks to the unresponsive golem.

"Wonderland... but she seemed quite serious about it. Dangerous? Only to your mental health, if they all are like the girl I met. But I should warn you, the one with pointed ears had a weapon, a bow." He frowned. "Now that I think about it, many of them had swords or some other weapon. But we can't kill here, so I would hope they can't, either."

He raised his eyes to hers and smiled at her.

"If they are dangerous, though, we'll just have to show them we're just as dangerous. We're not normal people, no matter how much we wanted to be."

She picked up the chopsticks that the golem had brought with the food and delicatly picked up one of the onigiri. She looked at it for a long moment and took a small bite.

"Ah, they really can make anything here" she said. "This is almost as good as the ones Setsuna..." he voice broke off. Setsuna was dead. And now she'd never be able to apologize for what she and Uranus had done.

"Being a warrior is no game" she said, favoring Mamoru with a scathing look. "It is a calling that few could answer. I have made many sacrifices for that calling, and was willing to make many more."

He returned her scathing look with a disbelieving one. He'd tried to reach out to her, make her feel comfortable. Sure, he wasn't very good at it, but he had been trying, and she was just rude back.

"Are you seriously telling me that, Neptune? Me, of all people? Do you seriously think that I don't know that? That being who I am, that fighting, would be a game to me?"

He looked away from her, down at his food, and picked up his own chopsticks.

She gave him a long, cold look.

"You don't know." she said coldly. "You were taken before you had to make the kind of decisions I've had to make. You are a protector first, a warrior second." she could feel her eyes start to burn, so she closed them and looked away. "I would have done anything to save the world. Anything."

She opened her eyes again and looked at him. "I would have killed innocents if it had been nessesary. I did betray my friends. I am condemned to hell for what I have done. Yes, I do think you don't know"

His blue eyes grew cold and icy as she spoke. His entire body stiffened up, and he withdrew from her, both physically and emotionally. Standing, he left his food practically untouched and stepped away from the table.

"Well, then, Michuru Kaioh, you don't know a damn thing about anything. If someone doesn't have the exact same experience at you, you point at them and say they can't know."

He bowed to her, stiffly, and turned away. He was not going to sit here and be told that everything he had done was useless, because it was different than what she had done.

"I hope you enjoy the rest of your day. Goodbye."

Michiru shrugged as she watched him get up.

"I do not coddle Chiba-san. I will not lie for the sake of your pride. You are who and what you are, a guardian to the Princess. I am a soldier. "

She turned back to her food and continued eating, though the food felt heavy in her stomach. Had she been too rude? No. She couldn't forget what had happened, even if it hadn't yet for him.

"It's interesting, really..."

The young man turned around and looked over his shoulder for a minute before looking away again.

"Because I do not remember the Princess Neptune being as you are. I wish I had her here with me, and not this rude, bitter girl. That would suit me much better."

He nodded to her and then turned back around. He'd been so happy to have someone here that he knew, and then only to find she was someone he couldn't abide being around... it was quite a blow.

"Good day, Kaioh-san. Enjoy your food."

As he walked away, he found himself sincerely hoping that whatever happened to change her into the woman he had known from his previous life, would happen soon. For now, though, he did not need to be told who he was. After all, he was a prince in his own right. He didn't need to be told he was merely a guardian to the princess.
