Day 6 - Closed-
Who: Brigitte Fitzgerald and OTA
When: 12pm
Where: The Garden
Why: Research and exploring
Rating: PG
Status: Completed!

It was another cloudless, beautiful day in Mirage when Brigitte awoke. Every morning she was getting more and more use to waking up in her resort room so opening her eyes this morning to see the same dark wooden dresser, French doors to the balcony and whitish yellow walls no longer surprised her. Thanks to the past few nights of great sleep, Brigitte was nearly smiling when she woke up. That smile wouldn’t last when she went to the bathroom and notice small yellow flecks in her irises. It was a wake-up call to Brigitte, reminded her that just because she was human now, it didn’t mean she was going to stay human.

A lot of myths had it that werewolves changed on the night of the full moon but for Brigitte and her breed of werewolf, that was only partly true. For them the change was a longer process that started about a week after they had changed back to human. It started slowly with increased appetite, sex drive, mood swings and slight physical changes that would continue until the full moon when she would be forced into a complete transformation. For the past year Brigitte had been struggling to find a cure with little luck but she had lost sight of her search upon arriving at Mirage. Seeing those yellow flecks reminded her.

Brigitte dressed lightly in jeans, a white tank top and a blue shirt before gathering her journal and some of her supplies in a knapsack. It was later than she thought so she simply grabbed a sandwich from the kitchen before heading out. She had seen a garden a few days ago and made a note to check it out later but forgot.

It was lovely garden with various right coloured flowers and plants. It seemed to be divided between a vegetable patch and a more traditional flower garden but Brigitte wasn’t here just for the scenery. Immediately she began walking around the flower patches, looking for a specific purple flower.

Brigitte nearly jumped out of her skin when the man cleared his throat. She had been so engrossed in her search that Brigitte hadn't heard him approach which was stupid of her. The werewolf might not have enjoyed having heightened senses but she should have been using them to the best of her advantage. Brigitte recovered from her shock quickly and straightened up to see an older man close by.

"Hello", she replied, not in an unfriendly manner but certainly wary. It was clear she had just met another resident but since he had offered to aid her search for monkshood, Brigitte could only assume he wasn't entirely new here. "I'm Brigitte", she offered her name, "And...uh, I'm looking for a specific type of flower".

The slender girl reached in her knapsack for her journal. It was a simple black hardcover book with lined pages but inside were Brigitte's notes over the past year from her research. More importantly however, there was a picture of the plant she was looking for. Brigitte headed over to Elminster and opened the book to show him a picture of the monkshood.

"It's called monkshood or aconite", she explained.

Elminster had not heard of a flower called monkshood. However, once Brigitte handed him the picture, he recognized it immediately.

"Ah, you mean wolfsbane. Strange, I've not heard it called by the names you mentioned." he said. He thought back to what he knew about the plant. It was somewhat anesthetic, and he remembered that it had something to do with lycanthropes. He filed that information away for later use.

"So, tell me, what was the world like where you came from?" He continued as they walked, searching for the flower, "I myself am from a world called Abier-Toril, on the continent of Faerun."

"Wolfsbane, yeah I forgot about that name", Brigitte admitted. "Aconite is the scientific name for it and Monkshood's just what they call it were I'm from", she further explained as she closed the book once more and put it back in her knapsack. Not that she was trying to be rude but Brigitte had a lot of personal notes in that book so she didn't like to show very often.

As the older man helped her search for the flower, Brigitte listened quietly as he asked about her world before telling her the name of his. "You're from where?" Brigitte, her forehead wrinkling slightly. "Sorry, I've never heard of it. My world is...pretty much like this one", Brigitte answered. "I mean, my world isn't a resort or as nice as this one but it's similar in terms of technology and style. I'm from a small town in Canada called Bailey Downs".

Normally Brigitte normally didn't admit to being from Bailey Downs. Technically Brigitte was wanted for questioning by the police back in Canada but it was obvious that Elminster wasn't about to report her to the Mounties. Since he was from a world Brigitte hadn't heard of, she was willing to bet he didn't know what a Mountie was.

"What about your world?" she asked curiously.

"I must admit I've never heard of this Canada. Ah Faerun, where to begin? My world is more a world of magic than technology. Though the Lantanese are looking to change that." As Elminster said this, his eyes began to take on a far-away look to them. He was remembering the days of his youth, when the whole of Faerun was new. Nowadays, he could teleport anywhere on the face of the continent and know right where he was, just by looking at it.

"There are numerous races populating the face of my world, far more than appear to be here. In some ways, it seems rather ... uniform here, with so many humans about. But, this is a whole new world to explore, something I've not had in a good hundred years or more." Thinking for a moment, he concentrated and conjured an illusory globe of Abeir-Toril above their heads.

"That is my world. And I've a feeling I may not see it again for a very long time. But enough of me, what of you? Tell me of yourself, and why you're seeking such an odd plant"

Elminster's world sounded like something out of a fantasy novel and if it wasn't for the fact that Brigitte herself was now on a different planet she might have wondered if the old man was suffering from dementia. When he mention a hundred years, Brigitte had to stop and stare at him but that wasn't nothing compared to the shock she received when he conjured up a globe in mid-air.

"Holy shit", Brigitte breathed, stepping back slighly and looking up at the globe. "That's...that's incredible". When Elminster asked about Brigitte, she let out a weak laugh. "Well, I can't do anything like that", she admitted. For a moment Brigitte debated what she should reveal about herself. Normally she kept the whole 'being a werewolf' thing to herself but since arriving on the planet she had learned there were others who knew about werewolves or who were different species themselves.

Since Elminster clearly had special talents himself, Brigitte decided that her being a werewolf might not freak him out like it would some of the others. "Well, I'm seventeen, from Canada as you already know and...and I'm a werewolf". Brigitte didn't pause to see his reaction but just talking. "I'm looking for monkshood because I want to find a cure for lycanthropy and monkshood, or wolfsbane, suppresses the change. For a little while anyway."

"Ah, that explains a lot." said Elminster, "Though I had always thought it was belladonna that was supposed to cure lycanthropy and then only if administered within the first hour of the bite." He taped a small portion of his magical power to asses her condition. Indeed, she was a werewolf.

"I may be able to help you. My magic is normally powerful enough to break the curse of lycanthropy which afflicts you. However, this place seems ... distant from my source of magical power. But I will do my best." He closed his eyes, and concentrated on attempting to cast the spell which would break Brigitte's curse. He bent his entire will towards casting it, but for some reason, the spell would not come. It was as if something or someone was blocking access to that particular spell.

"I am very sorry, Brigitte. It appears I cannot access that spell. It's as if someone's will was blocking my mind from accessing it. Strange. Well, I will continue to help you look for Wolfsbane anyway."

Brigitte had never heard of belladonna being used for curing lycanthropy and filed away that little tidbit of information away in her mind for later. She obviously wouldn’t be able to cure herself with it since Elminster said it had to be used within the first hour and Brigitte had been infected for well over a year but if could be useful if she ever lost control and bit someone. When he suggested that he might be able to help her Brigitte felt a rare bit of hope rise up inside of her.

Sadly, it was not to be and Brigitte felt her hope deflated when Elminster told her this. “It’s okay”, she replied sadly in a soft voice. “Thanks for trying”, the werewolf added. She continued walking through the flowers in search of monkshood but after a brief period of silence, Brigitte resumed talking.

“Have you met many werewolves?” the brunette woman asked curiously. She only had contact with three werewolves in her life. The one who bit her sister Ginger, her sister Ginger and Jason, the boy Ginger infected. She was curious to know if there were others out there likeher.

"In fact, I have met many afflicted with lycanthropy. Not all of them were wolves however. I have met werebears, weretigers, all sorts of people afflicted with the curse. I just wish I could have helped you more."

Elminster sighed as he continued with the young werewolf through the garden.

"I was surprised to hear that your world had little to no magic in it. It was my understanding that lycanthropy was a magical or a supernatural curse."

“You’ve met weretigers? And bears?” The teenager remarked, looking at Elminster directly. “That’s…” she was about to say ‘fucked up’ but since she was afraid such language might offend the older man, Brigitte finished with “…amazing”. Her lip quirked when he mentioned wanting to help her more and the girl gave him a slight smile. “It’s okay. I don’t think my lycanthropy is easy to get rid of anyway”. When the sorcer mentioned lycanthropy might be caused by magic, Brigitte shook her head.

“Not mine. I might consider it a curse but it wasn’t given to me by a witch, wizard or what have you”, she replied, bending over to look at a tall leafy plant. There were no flowers on it yet but that leave shape was familiar to the teen and relief flooded her. “Maybe the first werewolf was caused by magic but usually my form gets passed on through being bitten or mixing blood.” Brigitte broke off a leaf and examined it further. Monkshood was very poisonous and even touching it could be dangerous since the toxic venom could seep into a person’s skin. Brigitte would never recommend a human touching it but since she had a stronger resistant and tolerance to the poison, she wasn’t worried.

“I found it”, she said out loud to Elminster, holding up a leaf. “But it’s not bloomed yet. I need flowers for my—“Brigitte broke off. She was about to say ‘injections’ but didn’t know if she should share that tidbit with Elminster. Some adults had a real aversion to injecting drugs. “For my research”, she finished.

"A biting or blood mixing is the usual transmission method in my world as well." As Brigitte mentioned that she had found it, Elminster joined her next to the plant in question. Indeed it had yet to bloom.

"This, I'm sure I can handle. Allow me." Elminster straightened and searched his memory for a spell he had not used in a long time. He found it and began casting it. It would accelerate the growth of the plant, so that it would bloom in seconds instead of weeks. Finishing the casting, the plant suffused with a green glow and bloomed almost instantly.

"There you go. That should be more than enough flowers for your research."

Brigitte watched curiously as Elminster cast a spell over the plant, her eyes widening as the growth accelerated nd the plant glowed. Within seconds dark purple blooms were pushing their way out of green shells. "Oh my god", Brigitte breathed, her pale fingers reaching hesitantly to touch one of the flowers. It was real and felt soft at her touch.

"That was amazing", she added, looking at Elminster. "Thank you". Being careful not to harm the plant too much, Brigitte nimbly removed a few stems covered with purple flowers. It would be enough to allow her to make a fair amount of the poison she needed. After she was done, she carefully slipped the stems into her bag.

"How did you learn how to do magic?" she asked curiously. It would be amazing to have such talent Brigitte thought but she was curious of where it came. "Did you learn it or were you just born with it?"

"It was no trouble at all" Elminster assured her as he handed over the blooming flower. He was glad that he cast the spell well. He was still somewhat unnerved about having had a spell fail him earlier.

"Oh, I've known how to do magic now for over 1000 years or so. It was something that I learned over many years. Although, I did have the help of Mystra, goddess of magic. She took a special interest in me. Chose me. Gave me powers beyond that of normal wizards. In return, I've helped keep Faerun safe since then." He sighed again, remembering his home and his lost friends.

"What about you? How did you come to be a werewolf?"

Goddess of Magic? If anyone else had made a statement like that Brigitte might have laughed but Elminster was completely serious. Well, he is from a different world. They must have gods there, she told herself. Still Brigitte, who had never had much faith in her own religion, had trouble dealing with the idea of gods. She decided to simply nod instead of argue.

Brigitte opened her mouth and closed it while she debated what to tell Elminster. She already told him more than she normally shared but he had been pretty open with her too. Plus, the old man had helped her and answered her questions. Brigitte decided she at least owed him the same.

"I...uh...I infected myself with my sister's blood. She was attacked and bitten and I--" Brigitte broke, a bitter chuckle crossing her lips. "And I thought I could find a cure and save her."

Elminster looked at her with a half smile. She had risked everything, even herself in a gamble to save her sister. It reminded him of himself when he was younger.

"I wish that I could help you and your sister. But it appears that we are all trapped here. And my powers are not at their full here. For now though, I can help you when you need the wolfsbane."

Brigitte looked down at the ground shyly but returned her eyes to the older man after a moment when he spoke. Since Sam's death she had been incredibly hesitant about letting anyone help her. Thanks to Ghost's betrayal, she was also somewhat wary of offers of help as well but Elminster's offer to help her with the wolfsbane brought a slight smile to her lips.

"Thank you. I...I'd appreciate that. You have no idea how much", she added softly. "I just wish there was something I could do in return to help you but I haven't got a clue about magic and as for getting off this rock..." Brigitte trailed off, looking around helplessly before shrugging. "I haven't got much of a clue about that either".

"There's no need for you to do anything in return. I am glad to help. Indeed, should you ever need anything else, please seek me out. My room is number E242. And should I find a way to return to our homes, I will let you know."

He looked at her and wondered what her life would have been like had her sister not been infected. Or, for that matter, what she might've been like in her home world.

"If the time of the full moon comes and your potion is not ready, tell me and I will endeavor to help you make it. Also, should you need to be restrained during the change, I will do so. For the moment, I will return to my room and see if I can find any more information on lycanthropy. Is there any more I can do for you now?"

Brigitte was grateful for Elminster's offer and was glad that he wasn't at all unnerved by werewolves. If anything he seemed all too eager to help. When he suggested helping her with the 'potion' Brigitte shook her head. "That probably won't be necessary since I'm just distilling the monkshood right now but I find anything to add to the serum then I might stop by to ask your advice".

As for the suggestion of being restrained during the full moon, Brigitte had to admit she didn't quite like the idea. It's necessary though, a voice argued in her mind. Do you really want to be on the loose and threat to all the people here?

No, that was the last thing Brigitte wanted. Elminster's suggestion made sense and not just for her. Immediately, Brigitte thought of her wild sister, Ginger, who was still loose on the planet. Who was no doubt getting herself into all sorts of mayhem. Brigitte could need help restrain Ginger too.

"Thanks...I might be calling on you for that later on if this serum doesn't work out", the brunette finally said. "Speaking of which, I should probably head back to my room and get started on it. Thanks again for all your help".

With that Brigitte took her leave of the garden. Perhaps she would stop by the library on her way back to her room. There could be some useful information on Belladonna there.
