Day Six
Who: Tonks and Marcus
What: 'Sploring on mountain bikes
When: Day six, afternoon
Where: The bike trails in the hills
Rating: PG-ish for language and fighting.
Status: Complete

She was falling into a bit of a routine, and really, she couldn't say she minded it. Every day or two, either she would pop by Marcus' place, or he would come by hers on his way out to do something. They were spending a lot of time together, but maybe that was only natural. After all, they had similar views on how much they loved being trapped here. So many people seemed perfectly content to just stay here forever. Not Tonks, and not Marcus. It was a bond, of sorts. Of course, it didn't hurt that she genuinely liked his company, either.

Today, just as she'd been trying to decide what to do, her new friend had dropped by with the proposal that they go hiking in the hills to see if there was any way of escaping there. She grinned at him and counter-proposed, which was why they were soon zooming along the dirt bike trails on old-fashioned bicycles. All in all, she decided, she liked her broom better. Too bad she hadn't found one yet. She had yet to catch anyone actually cleaning up or doing anything janatorial, or else she would have snagged one ages ago.

The witch, whose hair today matched the bright blue of her jeans, glanced over at the Ranger. He'd had a hard time with the concept of a bike at first, but had picked up quickly. Quick learner, obviously. She smiled at him and waved, steering with one hand. It wasn't that much different than a broom, really, just a whole lot more work. She'd never had any problems at all while on broomstick, and it translated over to the bicycle, as well.

"Alright now, Marcus?"

Marcus took Tonks' head start for all it was worth. He pushed his peddles as hard as he could and soon was rocketing over the ground at a rate that could most aptly be called 'alarming'. Behind him, he heard Tonks cast a spell, and then suddenly she was shooting past him. He knew that, at his speed, if he hit a bump or a loose rock he would be cougar lunch, but she was going suicidally faster than him. Marcus knew what that meant. He had to be faster than her to avoid being cat lunch, and that wasn't going to happen.

"Tonks! Why would you do that? It's going to have me for dinner!"

Marcus peddled as if his life depended on it, which it very well might as he saw it. Just because none of them were allowed to kill each other didn't mean they couldn't be killed by a wild animal did it? Unless, he supposed, the cougar was a fellow inmate that had been abducted. Why else would there be wild Earth animals here?

Tonks laughed, and held onto the handlebars with just one hand, pointing her wand behind her with the other. If Marcus was worried, she could help him out with that.

"Accio Marcus' bicycle!"

Suddenly, pulled by the power of her magic, his bike was not being propelled through the air by his feet anymore. Instead, he was flying towards her, and landed with a thump beside her. They were now quite a bit ahead of the cat, but the power of her repelling charm had worn off, and she was going under the power of her own pedalling once more. They were about halfway to the ranch now.

"By the way, my wand wouldn't work for you, unless you can do magic. Just so you know, cause you asked before."

The words were panted out between desperate gasps for air. She was in good physical shape, but this was something beyond what she was used to.

Marcus was busy panting and pedalling hard when Tonks lifted him and his bicycle into the air. It was completely unexpected and, given the context, completely frightning. He had been devoting the entirety of his concentration to the rather large predator chasing him, and none to any possibility of flight.

"Tonks! Oh, my god, Tonks! What are you doing?"

When he began to descend the long arcing trajectory Tonks had set him on, he was convinced he was going to crash unceremoniously into the ground, rapidly forming a broken, twisted pile of metal bars and cougar food, so, when he landed evenly on two wheels and was able to keep his balance, he was completely astonished.

"Is there nothing you can't do? That was amazing!"

"I can't walk down a perfectly straight, empty hall without tripping..."

She heard a low growl, far closer than she would have thought possible, and gasped before swearing and daring a look back. Apparently, big cats could run really fast. She'd definately learned her lesson.

"Oh, bloody... Marcus, grab my hand, okay?"

She held on tightly to the bike with one hand, and steered it closer to him, as close as she dared without actually being that great of a bike rider. She held her free hand out to him, and stuck her wand between her hand and the bike handlebars. She didn't need to actually wave the wand, just use it as a focus for her magic.

"Take my hand, Marcus!"

Marcus was about to laugh when he heard the growl behind him. Apparently even magical flight couldn't help them escape from this thing. They were in serious trouble.

When Tonks swerved towards him, he thought it was nerves at first, and made ready to get out of her way, but when she stuck out her hand to him, he thought she was crazy at first. Well, he had started to think she was crazy when she magically stung the big cat into adrenalin-filled rage, but this was something new.

"What? But we'll both lose control!"

Despite his current level of anxiety, he hadn't completely lost his head, and, if he was honest with himself, he did trust Tonks, despite her presently magnified daredevil streak. Without letting himself think about it too much, Marcus held out his own hand and grabbed that of the witch on the bicycle next to him.

Their hands made contact and she linked her fingers with him. Okay, so that part wasn't strictly necessary, but it was very pleasant. She held on tightly to his hand.

"Stop peddling in five... four... three... two... NOW!"

She stopped peddling, trusting Marcus to do the same, and suddenly, there was a twisting sort of feeling. They disappeared from the slightly hilly bike path, and appeared very close to the place where they'd picked up the bikes in the first place.

It had been an exhausting trip, and Tonks didn't let go of his hand right away. Instead, she sighed and leaned forward against the handlebars of the bike.

"I'm getting too bloody old for this..."

Marcus held Tonks' hand tightly, and stopped pedalling exactly when she instructed him to. He had no idea what she had up her mystical sleeve, but if he was going to go along with it, he had to go all the way.

He hadn't been sure what to expect, but being twisted into thin air had definitely not been it. What the hell was happening to him? Just as quickly, of course, they were back, sitting on their bikes in front of the garage, no path beneath their wheels, no cougar at their heels. Marcus let out a long breath, then turned to stare at Tonks.

"You're getting too old? If you're too old, how do those fellows with white beards and pointy hats do it? Or do they even want to?"

He stopped to catch his breath.

"Tonks, I swear you know more magical spells than anyone I've ever known. Now, I know that that doesn't seem like much, since I've never known a witch or wizard before, but I'm including fictional characters, and some of them know a fair bit of magic."

He noticed he was still holding her hand, but felt no pressing inclination to let it go. He wondered when she would do it.

She turned to look at him, raising her head from it's resting position, and grinning at him in a very tired, but good-natured sort of way. Their linked hands hung between them, and she didn't pull away.

"I dunno, I've just always been good at using spells in ways no one expects. At least the poor cat is free."

She sat up again and swung her leg over the bike so she was standing between his bike and hers, still holding his hand, and supporting her bike with her free hand.

"Oh, and my clothes definately would not fit you. Yeah, I sometimes wonder about old people, too, but then you don't see a lot of old Aurors, really. Don't usually live that long."

His assessment of her magical abilities had her beaming at him in pleasure. She'd been called talented before, of course, but he really went far beyond any compliment she'd ever recieved.

"Thanks, Marcus. I try my best."

Marcus also got off his bike, making no effort to release the young witch's hand. It seemed they were both a little drained from the exertions of their outing. Now that the rampaging cat was gone, he found himself able to relax. Tonks wide smile was comforting and contagious. Marcus smiled to see her smile, and felt better for it.

"Well, take it for what's it's worth, seeing as I'm a 'muggle'."

At this point, Marcus attempted to turn and walk his bike back to where he had originally taken it, and realized he was still holding Tonks' hand. Suddenly self-conscious, he attempted to let go casually, afraid he would make it seem like he was electrically shocked or disgusted.

"So, um, that was a good ride, hey?"

Her hand fell down to her side, still warm from his fingers. She suddenly grabbed the bike with both hands and started walking it to the golem who was waiting for their return. She was blushing, a little.

"Oh, yeah, really brilliant bike ride... cougars, really fast, will keep that in mind..."

She was babbling, and quickly turned in her bike before turning to Marcus. Her cheeks were still pink, and she looked away quickly.

"Right, then. I'll see you later, I expect. I need food and a shower and things..."

Babbling. Definately babbling.

Marcus nodded, barely noticing Tonks' blush, too busy wondering if she was noticing his own fidgeting. Truth be told, he had enjoyed holding her hand, touching another person. It was a comfort to him, here in this bizarre place, and he hoped he hadn't taken advantage of her.

"Right. Yes. Really fast. Alright. Food and shower. Good idea."

Marcus handed his vehicle and helmet back to the animated attendent, and turned his mind to his own replenishment. He did think food and shower were a good idea, but wanted to make sure he did them in the opposite order Tonks did, so he didn't seem like he was copying her or following her around. Not that he would be using the same shower as her!

The same thought about showering together occured to her, and she blushed much worse than before. Hastily she backed away, tripped over a pebble, but kept going.

"Right, then, Marcus. Bye."

She gave him a little wave and a smile before turning around and heading for the restaurant. It wasn't just a convienant excuse to get away from the awkward situation, she really was hungry. Quickly, she disappeared into the building.

Marcus watched her go, having truly enjoyed their ride, despite the incident with the cougar. Then turned to head back to his room to have a shower. Though they hadn't reached anything but a wild beast, Marcus couldn't help but feel they had learned something important about Mirage. He just couldn't figure out what it was.
