Who: Elminster and OTA
When: Day 5, late afternoon
What: Elminster arrives
Where: Outside the library
Rating: PG-13, just to be safe
Status: Complete

Elminster sat, contemplating the horizon. He did this from a wooden chair which he had enchanted to float 50 feet above his tower. This is where he did his serious thinking. The vista was always so peaceful, looking out over Shadowdale, the city he had chosen to make his home. He had just received some disturbing news from an ally of his, a Diviner named Rumah. He had apparently foreseen some impending disaster concerning Mystra, not to mention the rest of the world. Closing his eyes, he focused his magical energies on making contact with Mystra. As he felt her familiar presence in his mind, a horrible scream tore through him. It was as if the whole world was screaming inside his mind! His vision, enchanted to view the substance of magic itself, was going wild. Furthermore, his chair was now plummeting towards the ground. Elminster used the power stored in one of his rings to slow his fall to that of a feather. Something was very wrong. Elminster, on the way down, recognized the scream as coming from the voice of Mystra. Raw magic began manifesting all around him. He decided the
situation was desperate enough to risk a spell, even with all the roiling magic around him. He took a deep breath and teleported away. He did not, however, reach his intended destination.

After a brief moment of disorientation, Elminster popped back into reality, though not where he intended. He landed hard on his rear, in a hallway. Nearby, an open door led into a room full of books. Elminster picked himself up, brushed off his robes and said "That was a near thing. I nearly didn't make it. Now, where on Toril am I?" Looking around, he noticed the door and, above it written in large letters was the word "Library".

"Well, at least wherever I am, they speak Common." Elminster said to himself. Then he remembered the roiling chaos of magic he saw before he teleported out. Quickly, he muttered an incantation designed to detect the presence of magic. As the reassuring presence of the Weave made itself felt in the back of his mind, he also quickly enhanced his sight again, so that he could see the raw magic flow around him. Oddly, the spell seemed to require more concentration and effort on his part than he was used to. It was as if the Weave, although there, was somehow distant. He completed the spell and opened his eyes. Instantly, he recoiled, blinded by the sheer amount of magic present around him. It was as if the entire planet was charged with a greater amount of magic than even he had ever seen. He staggered down the hallway, dismissing the spell as quickly as he could, but before he could regain his sight, he ran straight into someone, knocking the both of them off their feet.

"My apologies" said Elminster, as he slowly regained his feet and his vision, "You'd think that at my age, I would've learned to watch where I was going. Elminster, the Sage of Shadowdale at you service" he said with a bow, offering his hand to help up the person he had collided with.

Elminster looked at the plaque, read and reread the inscription.
"Welcome to Mirage.
This is your new home.
Your every need will be fulfilled.
You will have a place to live.
You will have food and clothing.
You will have entertainment.
You will have company.
You will not be able to leave.
You will not kill. Ever.
If you have questions, ask my assistants.
Love,
The Planet"
"Hm." said Elminster. He turned back to Legolas and listened as he lamented their predicament. He looked around, remembering the layout of this room, in case he ever needed to get back to it.

"If this is indeed the case, then I will make the best of the situation. But first there is something I must try. If it works, it could mean freedom for the both of us." He concentrated on a spell he had used many times, one of teleportation. He concentrated and once again it was more difficult to cast the spell than he remembered, but he got it of and felt himself momentarily vanish from the world. He reappeared and looked around. He was precisely where he was before, standing next to the plaque and Legolas.

"Oh well. It was worth a try. Thank you for being patient, Prince Legolas. Can you tell me where I am to live? And, for that matter how long have you been here yourself?"

Legolas laughed, but not in a mean way. Just in the way that he was constantly amused by pretty much everything and anything. He shook his head slightly. This Wizard was dealing with things very well, almost too well. But that was a good thing. He hadn't looked forward to an angry Wizard. That would be bad.

"My Lord Wizard, the pink-haired witch already tried something similar to that. She walked around for a couple of days, constantly blinking out and then in again."

He nodded and then gestured towards the door.

"If you will, Lord, follow me. I will get you your key, and then show you to your room."

He hoped Elminsters key had the room number on it, as his had, or else he would have no idea where to lead him.

Elminster nodded and followed Legolas. So, he thought, he wasn't the only one with magical talent here. Furthermore, he wasn't the first to think of teleportation magic either. This bared investigating.

"What can you tell me of this pink-haired witch?" Elminster asked as they entered a new room. It was nice to have a competent person there with him, able to explain to the best of their ability what was going on. This pink-haired witch he had mentioned seemed to be a decently competent mage. She might be able to tell him something about the state of magic in this place. Come to think of it, this Legolas also seemed to know more about what was going on. He might prove to be a good knowledge source in future.

It wasn't a long ways to the foyer, and as Legolas had expected, the box on the desk was blinking, signalling a new arrival. He was starting to get the hang of this place, he figured. He gestured gracefully with his head towards the box.

"Inside there is your room key. After you get it, I shall show you to your room, my Lord."

At least, he hoped he would. He wasn't even sure the number would be on the key, he was just hoping. Still, best to cross that bridge when he came to it, he figured.

"Oh, the witch? I have often seen her exploring the grounds. I have heard she wishes to excape, her and a man who calls himself a Ranger. Her name is something very strange... Tonks, I believe. A strange human, even stranger than most. That is all I really know of her, except that she carries a strange stick with her, and is friendly. I seem to always see her speaking with someone new."

He waited for the Wizard to get the key as he talked. Again, he really didn't mind telling stories, when he had a good audiance. This strange old man was definately that.

Elminster picked up the shiny key and looked at it closely. There was an inscription on it in Common, which read "E242". He assumed that this must be the designation of his room. He showed this to Legolas, in the hopes that he might know the location of his room.

"Please, stop calling me 'My Lord'. It's been a long time since I've been lord of anything. It's even been over a hundred years since I've had an apprentice. Tonks, eh? I may have to seek her out. There are some strange things about magic here."

A thought occurred to him. "Legolas, how many humans are here as compared to other races?"

"Well, my Lord Wizard, it would seem that you are in luck. I believe that Tonks is in that building, as well. Follow me."

Legolas had not gotten as far as he had without a few skills, and one of them was a keen sense of observation. He watched a lot more than he appeared to, and knew things people might not expect him to. Which wasn't to say he knew everything, far from it.

"If I am not to call you my Lord, what shall I call you?" He looked at him enquiringly before answering his question. After all, if the Wizard didn't want to be called Lord, he wouldn't call him that. One thing the wise learned was not to offend a Wizard.

"I believe most of them are human. I am the only Elf, and I have seen no Hobbits or Dwarves. Nor, thankfully, any of the Orc vermin. I know there is at least one vampire, I think perhaps two or three. Most, however, are human, of different ages, from different times and different places."

He led the way towards the 'E' dormitory as he spoke.

"Please, just call me Elminster, or El if you'd like." said Elminster. It seemed that fate had decided to place his living quarters in the same building as this magic-user named Tonks. As he puffed away on his pipe, he tried to figure out what, if anything, all the people here had in common. Most were human, only some had facility with magic, and there were a couple vampires.

"If there are indeed vampires present, how is it that they do not expire in all this sunlight? And from different places and ages you say?" Elminster thought for a while, and then continued "If this planet is indeed responsible for our stay here, it must be hugely powerful. No entity in my world since the time of Ancient Imaskar has been able to reach across to another world. And no entity that I know of has been able to reach across time. Indeed, we should be wary of it." They continued to walk through the complex toward the building containing Elminster's room.

"Very well, then. I shall call you Elminster." El, he decided, would be much too informal. He would probably die of the shock if he called a Wizard that. Though Legolas took very little seriously, wizards were one thing he most definately did.

"I do not know that, my friend. Perhaps in different places, vampires behave differently. Yes, we are all from different places. I hail from Middle Earth, and no one else here is from my land. It is all very random, the planet just seems to take anyone from anywhere. It is something to be wary of."

He led them to the door of the 'E' complex, and then to the stairs to the second floor.

"That is true. I must get in the habit of thinking ... differently. And I agree. Anything that acts that randomly with that amount of power is something to keep an eye on." said Elminster as they strode up the stairs. They reached the door labeled "E242" without difficulty. Taking the key, he inserted it into the door lock and turned. Inside was an exact replica of his tower room, complete with his shelves worth of dusty tomes. It also had the addition of a balcony looking out over the resort.

"Well, that was unexpected." said Elminster. "This looks almost exactly like my room back home in Shadowdale. Right down to my tomes. Although I did leave the bed unmade, and this one is made neatly." He turned back to Legolas

"Thanks again for all your help. Is your room like this also?"

Legolas nodded in full agreement. He didn't expect that they could do much to be on guard against such a powerful force, and unlike some, he didn't hold out much hope for escape, but he would do what he could to keep himself safe.

He laughed at the Wizard's response. He probably should have mentioned the little detail about the rooms changing to suit their owners.

"No, the rooms depend completely on their owners. I should have mentioned this before. Mine looks like a forest. You must have wished yours to look as it does."

He paused in the doorway and looked at the man curiously.

"Is there anything else you would like to see, or any questions you have?"

"I was actually wondering if you could tell me your room number. And the number of the witch you mentioned, Tonks." said Elminster "You seem like you know what's going on around here, and I could always use someone who knows the area. And I would be interested to chat with another spellcaster."

He looked back at the door with Legolas standing there and said "Thanks again, Legolas."

Legolas nodded. "You can find me in room B 246. As for the pink-haired witch, I do not know. I only know that I have seen her and the Ranger come into this building."

He wasn't, after all, a stalker, just someone who kept his ear to the ground.

"If you need anything, please come see me. I have enjoyed speaking with you, Elminster who is not a Lord."

Elminster half-smiled at the title Legolas had given him.

"Thank you again, Legolas. I have no doubt I will be seeing you around. I intend to explore this place fully. Until then, I bit you farewell."

Elminster bowed, closing the door and deciding to inventory what he had wished into existence through his room.
