Who: Tonks and Hatter
When: Late afternoon-ish
What: tea time!
Where: The cafe
Rating: PG, I think. Mostly just weird.
Status: Complete

It had been amazing to meet Ginny, who was the one person who knew for sure that Tonks wasn't completely insane, talking about magic, witches and wizards, Hogwarts, Aurors, and other stuff from her world. But the young woman had been very shaken up, and Tonks had left her alone to recover. She knew that they would talk later, when Ginny was calmer. If that ever happened. Ginny could definately have a temper sometimes. Course, it kind of ran in the family. Tonks had once seen Molly absolutely enraged about something, and it was a scary sight.

She'd left the young witch alone, and headed off to explore some more. It was hopeless, though. She and Marcus had been over pretty much every inch of this place, and she knew it almost like the back of her own hand. Which was a silly statement, now that she thought about it. How often did she stare at the back of her own hand?

Deciding it was tea time, since it wasn't quite late enough for dinner but was after lunch, she headed off to the cafe to grab some tea and biscuits. There was only one other person in the place. For a second propriety and friendliness warred inside her, but in the end she went over and stood beside him. She'd never met this person before, but he looked so strange, she just had to say something. Anyone out of the ordinary was definately someone she was interested in.

"Hullo! I'm Tonks! Are you new here?"

She gave him a friendly smile, and an overly-enthusiastic wave that ended up hitting into one of the golems walking by. It ignored the clumsy witch and kept going. She shrugged and turned back to the strange man, wondering if he would be annoyed with her for just walking up to him and making conversation.

"Oh, right. I have to kill people sometimes for my jobs. We're supposed to take them alive, if we can, but sometimes... we have to defend outselves. Well, this queen doesn't sound very nice, does she?"

The Auror shrugged and waved down a golem to bring some cakes and things. It was awhile until dinner yet, and she was feeling a little hungry.

"Sounds fun, having a place change all the time."

That was about all she got from what he had said. The rest was a confusing jumble, but that was okay with her. It kept her on her toes. Also, the small creature he was playing with was quite fascinating.

"London is boring, especially the muggle parts. All stone and brick and it always rains. One of the things I like about it here is that there really isn't much in the way of rain."

"What job requires you kill?" He asked, sending a sidelong glare at the rock creature as it neared, still not too fond of them even though they had brought him his tea. As far as the Hatter was concerned, rocks had no right walking after being motionless for so long. "The queen is wretched."

Offering another shrug at her interest in Wonderland, he allowed thoughts of his old home to fade. He rarely took note of the change; knowing simply that it occurred, but never finding it much too interesting.

"What sort of parts do muggles have? Stone and brick -- The rock men are called muggles?"

"I'm an Auror, dark wizard hunter. We're not really supposed to kill if we can help it, though."

She saw his glare at the creature and was vaguely amused by it. She had been unnerved by them at first, but they wern't that different looking from giants. Just shorter and better-dressed.

"No, no, muggles are non-magic folk. They're just people, though. But they live in a different part of London from most of the witches and wizards."

"Is the point of hunting not to kill your prey?" Hatter glanced down as the odd mouse creature vanished once more, curling up in the inside coat pocket again. There was no telling what sort of things were in his pockets, of which he had many.

"You should have some honey in that tea." He commented, pointing a long finger at her cup before sipping his own again. Of course, there was no honey to be seen, and he hadn't the slightest idea what type of tea she had, but he fancied that it would make the liquid have a more appealing color. Never mind that it was completely off topic.

"We're supposed to bring them to trial and stuff, you know. Bring them to justice and all that."

She watched him fascinated, wondering what sort of magic must be in his clothing. He seemed to have an unending supply of them. She found herself looking forward to what he would do next. All she had in her pockets was her wand, and some pocket lint.

"Oh! Honey! That sounds bloody amazing!"

Ignoring that she'd already sweetened her tea, the wand came out again. The summoning charm was repeated again, this time for honey instead of sugar. Obligingly, a pot of honey flew over and landed on the table.

"See, it changes the color, isn't that nice! Brilliant idea, Hatter."

"Trials are a dreadful business, often ending in beheading for most involved. I should rather be killed first then have a trial second." Trials in Wonderland made about as much sense as everything else, and were never very pleasant.

The Hatter turned his head to watch the honey pot fly towards them, tsking at the odd behavior. "My honey and sugar pots are not quite so well behaved. They never come when I call." It was a shame, but he'd fix it promptly upon returning.

"Oh yes. The color is better. I should like to see a tea colored to match your hair though. I imagine it would have to be very hot though, undrinkable.

Tonks had never been directly involved in a trial, though she understood that sometimes Aurors needed to be witnesses. She, luckily, had never had to do so, and was just as happy for that.

"Fair enough. I've no idea about that."

She frowned at the tea, challenged by what he had said. Surely there was some way to dye the liquid... she knew many charms, and one of them would surely do. She brightened up almost immediately. A spell she'd learned ages ago would surely do. The incantation was simple, and she did it in her head while waving her wand at the tea. It immediately turned a brilliant red.

"There! I knew there was something. Red tea!"

His eyes went wide for a long moment, staring at the tea, pressing a finger to the side of the cup as if to test the temperature. "If I am returned to Wonderland, you should take the queen's throne." He commented, leaning back casually once more, impressed with the show.

"Why should you always carry a watch when crossing a desert?" He asked, having been so long since he'd asked a proper riddle. The last one he'd asked Alice, and she still had yet to give him an answer. He had so very many riddles, but only one or two answers.

"Yeah? Queen Tonks?"

She grinned a little. The idea had a slight allure to it. Sounded much more fun to be a queen than to be in a war. Of course, if she had to pick, she'd choose to go home. But it was more out of a sense of duty than anything else. She took a drink of her tea, ignoring the color completely. It was just cosmetic, didn't affect the tea at all.

"I dunno, why?"

She was rubbish at riddles, but enjoyed laughing.

"Queen of Hearts." He corrected. "Or perhaps the Red Queen. I dislike both, but the Queen of Hearts wishes me dead more often."

After asking his riddle he took to stacking his tea cups and saucers, eventually drawing a pack of playing cards out to make a castle around the cups. When she asked for the answer he stared for a long moment at her. "I don't know." The Hatter replied.

"I do love watches though." He pulled a long gold string from his pants pocket, on which four pocket watches hung -- of course, none told the time. Date, month, and year on one. Another had a spiral on it in shades of pink and blue to reflect his mood. A third had 1-12 on it like any other watch, but in a completely different order, and with only one hand. The last was totally blank.

"Alright, so the Red Queen it is. Anyways, it matches my hair color."

She ate a couple of little cakes and pastries once the golem brought them, and wished once more that she had pockets as interesting as the Hatter's. She laughed when he said his riddle. It wasn't the traditional way that she was used to, but it had been a long time since Tonks had been worried about that.

"Watches? I had a mini sundial that I wore sometimes... I should show you sometime! If I can find one in this place. I wonder if I could create one?"

He shoved the watches back in his pocket, gaze following the golem as it neared again. Blue eyes flickered to the small cakes, a smirk pulling across painted lips, and fingers curling around one. The Hatter took a bite of the sweet cake, and then chucked it at the rock creature's head.

Pulling off the top hat, he punched it through, inverting the hat so it was black instead of red, and returning it to its place. Surely the creature wouldn't recognize him now.

"Why do you carry a tw~iig?" He asked, pointing to her wand curiously.

She clapped her hands in delight and laughed as he switched his hat from red to black, and, focusing briefly, did the exact same with her hair so that they again matched. Her wand came out again, and she waved it. The tea turned black, instead of the bright red it had been before.

"Brilliant! Your hat is just brilliant!"

She watched as he ate the cake, and then raised an eyebrow. It took her a second to even know what he was asking her about. Oh, right, her wand.

"It's how I do magic, my wand."

She concentrated, and a bouquet of beautiful pink flowers sprouted from the tip of her wand. She picked them off the end and offered them to the Hatter.

"Not my hat." He watched as she turned her tea and hair black to match his own. A neat trick but he lost interest after the first go around. Now it was just a curiosity.

"I'm a Hatter -- The Hatter. Keep them 'til they sell." He explained. Granted, there really wasn't much in the ways of currency in Wonderland, and not many wore hats there either. Never bothered him any though, he was quite happy with his collection.

"I would like one. What tree did you break that from?" Hatter accepted the flower, dunking it in his tea and taking a bite out of the petals.

"Alright, well, still, that's a bloody brilliant hat."

She laced her fingers together and rested her chin on them, looking at her odd tea and conversational partner. She quite liked him, she decided. Unusual, yes, but that was never a down side to her.

"This wand? It was made by a wand maker. It's beech wood and mermaid scales."

She held it up and peered at it before tucking it safely away.

"You'd need to find a really good wand maker, if you want one of your own. I don't think they exist in Mirage."

"I think I can make one myself." He said. How hard could it be to smooth a stick, stuff something in it? He had all kinds of things in his pocket that would no doubt work well enough in a magic twig, right?

Hatter poured the contents of several cups into one larger one, sipping the strange mixture. It was ---

Awful.

He shoved the mug away, taking the one from his hat and pouring a fresh cup.

She had long ago finished her tea, and was quite full from all the biscuits and cakes and things. Also, being herself, she was a little restless. She didn't like to stay in one place too long, never had, and probably never would.

"You can try. Let me know if it works, alright?"

She tucked her hair behind her ears and looked at him for a second.

"I think I'm gonna go do something, Hatter. I like talking to you but I can't sit still anymore."

"You're always doing something." He said knowingly with a slight nod. "Go do something different." He tipped his hat as a way to say good bye, sure that he would spot her around again eventually. Even if he didn't it wasn't something he was all that concerned about. She wasn't even gone yet and he was already more preoccupied with mixing cream, sugar, left over pink flower petals from the flowers she'd created moments ago, and testing the taste.

"Yeah, I guess I am."

She grinned and him, rose, and promptly tripped over the leg of the table. Quickly, she righted herself, with the ease of long practice. With a wand, she was pretty good. With walking, not so much.

"See you, Hatter."

She turned around, waved over her shoulder at the man who was busily doing... something, she wasn't quite sure what, and headed for the door.
