WHO: Tonks and Sarah Williams
WHAT: SLUMBER PARTY!
WHEN: Day 33, evening
WHERE: Sarah's room
WARNINGS: PG-13?
STATUS: Complete

Tonks really didn't know quite what to think about the whole thing. In truth, she didn't have all of the story, and she knew that. But she did know that someone was hurting, and she was too good-hearted to just sit back and let that continue. She'd liked the girl in their conversations, and thought it was more than time for them to meet in person. So she headed over to Sarah's room, stopping briefly in her own to pick up some pajamas. The rest, she figured, the Planet would provide.

First, however, she did stop at the kitchens, and picked up some ice cream. She couldn't decide for flavors, so got four different kinds. Two were normal, chocolate and vanilla, which she figured a muggle would hopefully like. The other two were wizard flavors, pumpkin and a special one that changed with each spoonful, much in the way of everyone favorite jelly beans.

Loaded down, she finally made her way to Sarah's dorm, and then to her door. The golems had been very helpful, all she'd had to do is ask where the girls room was and she was pointed in the right way. So, less than half an hour after their conversation, she found herself outside Sarah's room with her hands full. She knocked with an elbow, because that was all she could manage, and then blew some of her bright hair out of her eyes because she couldn't use her hands. Like her shirt, her hair was a brilliant, lovely green. She also wore a black skirt with black and pink leggings underneath.

As she waited for Sarah to open the door, she wondered what would happen. To be honest, as long as she had a good time, she didn't really much care. She'd been doing a lot of ringleading for trying to leave the Planet, and could use a nice break.

Sarah had half expected Tonks's offer to be just one of those polite things one does to make another feel better but never really follow through on. She'd been lying on her bed, hugging Lancelot to her chest and thinking about everything. She had just let her mind go anywhere it wanted, which was something she hadn't done in a very long time because there were so many things she just hadn't wanted to face. Searching her soul was not a favorite pass time for her because it usually dredged up truths about herself that were ugly.

So when she heard the knock on her door she was startled. Sitting bolt upright, she dropped the stuffed animal on the floor. Her first thought was that Jareth was at the door wanting to talk. She quickly dismissed that as she remembered Tonks suggesting ice cream and makeovers. She hoped beyond hope that was who she would find on the other side of the door when she answered it.

"I'm coming!" she called. Sliding from the bed, she quickly threw on a fuzzy blue bathrobe over the casual sweats she'd put on after she'd come back and decided not to go out again for a long time.

Relief rushed through her as she pulled the door open and there stood a very female person on the other side. A female with green hair and arms full. "Tonks?" Sarah asked, reaching to take some of the other girl's load of ice cream.

"Yeah, that's me!" Tonks, of course, had a very pronounced accent. Somewhere between the upper class one of her mother, and the Cockney one of her father. Needless to say, it led to an interesting effect all told. She grinned at the brunette. "I didn't know what to expect, since we've never met in person."

She willingly gave up some of her burden, and then gestured at the other woman once she had a free hand. "I'm overdressed! But I brought pajamas in case we wanted to do the whole sleepover thing." She held her an oversized Weird Sisters shirt, on which the band, of course, was dancing around playing their instruments. That and a pair of shorts made up her night clothes.

"Can I come in? I think you have to invite me. Not because I'm a vampire or anything, but because this bloody planet has weird ideas of propriety. It can kidnap us and force us into odd group activities, but Merlin forbid we go into each others rooms without an invitation!" She chattered on happily as they transfered ice cream from her hands to Sarah's.

"I got lots of flavors, cause I didn't know what you would like." She handed over the cartons one at a time. "Chocolate, vanilla... thought those were pretty basic... and then pumpkin and this one might be kinda new for you." She held up the last container. "Every spoonful will taste different, I don't think muggle ice creams do that."

"Oh um, come in, please," Sarah said, backing up and, taking the ice cream that Tonks had given her, she put it on the vanity. She wasn't sure what to think of all of this yet but Tonks's energetically buoyant chatter and presence was so infectious that Sarah found herself smiling in spite of her previous seriousness.

"Don't worry about being overdressed or anything," she said, her voice sounding flat in her own ears compared to Tonks's upbeat accents. "I'm just... not planning to go anywhere anytime soon so I figured I might as well be comfortable."

Offering her guest the vanity chair, the only other place to sit in the room besides the bed, she sat down on her comforter, pulling her knees up to her chest and wrapping her arms around them. Try as she had before, she still could not shake this childhood bedroom with its girlish stuffed animals, keepsakes and posters and playbills from her mother's performances.

"And um, sorry about the clutter. I can't make it go away, even if I clean it. Which I tried earlier."

"Thanks!" Tonks smiled encouragingly at the brunette and stepped in as requested. She glanced around at the room, which had the right amount of clutter for her tastes. Not nearly brightly colored enough, of course, but then Tonks favored colors that might actually stand a good chance of making someone's eyes bleed.

"If there's one thing I've learned, it's that a girl should only be as dressed as her hostess. It's only polite." Once divested of the ice cream, she ducked quickly into a corner and changed. She left her clothing in a neat little heap in that same corner, and made a mental note to not forget them there. "Now I'm prepared for anything!"

Dressed in her very comfortable, and not even remotely glamorous, night clothing, she seated herself at the offered chair. "I like your room, though. It's really pretty." She smiled at the girl and then drew her legs up so she was perching cross-legged on the stool. Somehow, despite her horrible clumsiness, she managed to not fall off.

While she waited for Tonks to change clothes, she picked up Lancelot from the floor and brushed him off as though the fall to the floor had dirtied him. She set him back on her pillow and settled back into her sitting fetal position, feeling small and cold in spite of the sweats and bathrobe.

Oh, thank you," Sarah answered politely to the compliment on her room. "It's the room I grew up in, well until I all but destroyed it when I was 15."

She pushed escaped strands of hair behind her ear and looked around at all of the familiar, memory triggering things in the room. The glass dancer music box. The panda bear slippers. Her drawing pencils on the vanity beside the four cartons of ice cream Tonks had brought. She let out a shaky sigh and forced a smile to her lips again.

"So, um, thank you for coming over. What happens with these makeover and ice cream sleepover things? I've never actually been to one."

Tonks had to be a good judge of character, and observant. It was a requirement for her job, and she never could have done as well as she had without those crucial skills. So she noticed Sarah was upset. In fact, by what she was seeing, upset didn't seem to cover it. She watched, feeling empathetic as the girl picked up the bear and set him on the bed.

"Destroyed it? But it's like this now?" She frowned slightly and then shrugged. "It must mean something to you, then, if it goes this way... you said you tried to change it, right?" She was pretty sure she remembered the other girl saying something to that effect.

There were a lot of really interesting things in this room, and Tonks couldn't see why anyone would want to destroy it. But if Sarah had wanted to, surely she would have had a reason for doing so. She couldn't presumse to understand what the girl had been through, especially considering the bits that she already knew.

"Oh!" She grinned, back on familiar territory. "Well, first I think I should brush your hair." She got up from her position on the chair, almost falling on her face as she did so, but she quickly righted herself. Then, she walked over to the bed, snagging a brush off the vanity as she went. Once at the bed (having, of course, tripped several times on the way over) she settled down behind Sarah comfortably. "Okay, so now we talk and I brush your hair. Then, we switch."

"Yes," she answered. "It looks exactly the way it did the day Jareth took me to his labyrinth. The clutter and everything. I can clean it and change it around but always goes back to the exact setup when I come back or wake up."

It felt strange to admit that to anyone but she'd had no one to admit anything to in her life. Something about the way Tonks presented herself made Sarah feel she could trust her implicitly and seemed to invite confidences. Or maybe Sarah was just desperate to talk to someone. She decided it was a bit of both.

"It reminded me of him - er still does really. So I had a fit, I guess. That was the first time my father and step-mother tried to have me committed..."

Sarah felt herself suddenly want to smile again as Tonks endearingly made her way through the room in the most clumsy way Sarah had ever seen anyone walk. She was finding it next to impossible to stay in the foggy depression she had been slipping into before Tonks had arrived.

"Brush my hair? Okay. That sounds relaxing actually. What do we talk about?"

"Huh." She thought about that for a short time. "My room looks just like the one I have back home." But she'd made a conscious decision for it to look that way. In fact, each morning, she changed the color scheme to match her hair. Marcus' room, however, had changed, but not by any sort of direction on his part. So it could obviously vary.

She settled down behind the other woman, brush in hand, but snapped her fingers before she started using it. "Wait... ice cream!" She pulled out her wand and flicked it. "Accio chocolate ice cream!" The bucket obligingly flew over, and she spoke directly to the Planet. "Hey, can we get two big bowls and two spoons? Thanks!"

The eating utensils appeared, and Tonks dished out two big bowls of the cold dessert. Truth be told, she sort of thought Sarah could use some fattening up. The girl was practically emaciated. With her bowl, she ate with one hand and brushed with the other.

"You have gorgeous hair." It was, too. Dark, flowing, beautiful. Of course, Tonks could make her hair look like that, but this girl naturally had it. It made a difference.

"You're fortunate then. It must be very comfortable for you." That had come out automatically but it suddenly clicked why her own room was so stubbornly this way. Ultimately we do what we want to do, she'd always lived by that creedo. So deep down somewhere she wanted to be reminded of this all. That thought made her feel a little nauseous and she was grateful when Tonks mentioned ice cream.

Watching Tonks get the ice cream from the vanity and then into the bowls was bordering on delightful to Sarah. She'd seen magic before, obviously. Jareth had done plenty of magic. But not with a wand and not like this. She watched with slightly wide eyes and her smile began to appear more sincere.

With the bowl of ice cream in her hands and Tonks brushing her hair, Sarah felt soothed somewhat. She picked at the ice cream a little but not much of it disappeared from her bowl.

"Thank you," she replied to the compliment about her hair. "It's not as pretty as yours though. Your hair matches my eyes." Which was such a silly, irrelevant thing to say that she almost felt foolish. "I'm envious of your magical abilities. It must be so great to be able to do all of that with a wand. And you catch dark wizards too, don't you?"

"It's alright." She shrugged slightly. "I mean, I think it's important that people go out of their comfort zones a little sometimes, you know?" Which was why, she supposed, she'd allowed herself to fall in love with a space man from another time and place. She nibbled at her ice cream thoughtfully between strokes with the brush.

The wand rested on the bed where she'd put it down after her charm. It was, in a way, a sign of trust because Tonks would be in a great deal of trouble if she ever lost it or had it stolen. Not that it would work all that well for anyone else, but she did need it. But she didn't think Sarah would grab for it, so she relaxed enough to set it down.

She could feel the girl relaxing under her touch, so she set her nearly empty bowl of ice cream aside and focused her whole attention on brushing her hair. She knew how comfortable it could feel, and she wanted the other woman to relax a bit.

"Yeah, it does!" She clearly didn't think the comment was stupid, and in fact, she sounded delighted by the comparison. "But my hair can be any color, really...I'll show you later." She set the brush down and began to but Sarah's hair into a loose french braid. "So... you're pretty upset, yeah? Wanna talk about it?"

Having had more than her share of being outside her comfort zone recently, Sarah didn't nod a response to that. Instead she nibbled at a spoonful of ice cream not really tasting it a whole lot.

"Really? Any color? That's fantastic. Now I really envy you!"

Sarah would never had reached for the wand. It never would have occurred to her that she could make it work because she didn't have any magical powers of her own. She was fascinated by it though and thought maybe she would ask Tonks later to show her some more of what could be done -- if that wasn't against rules or anything.

"Yeah, a lot happened today. And yesterday," she answered and she did feel more relaxed, lulled into saying more than she might have otherwise. "We tried to call a truce because of the past but it just... ended badly."

The large grin she gave the other woman wasn't fake at all, despite the fact that they'd been talking about some pretty intense things just a couple of moments before. Though she hadn't forgotten it, of course, but she was the sort of person who really would rather focus on the positive. She would take care of the things she needed to, but until she had to, why dwell on it?

"Oh, we look brilliant, really." She struck a pose in the mirror, then stuck her tongue playfully out at the brunette girl. "Now, we're settled. Although my shirt is green... does anything clash with green?" She frowned, thinking that over, and decided that a little bit of clashing wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

The look she gave Sarah when she started quoting was a bit confused, but at the same time, there was really no edge to it. She was just glad to hear the woman laugh, to be honest. She didn't have to understand why. "Hand in hand to hell..." She grinned. "You know, hell is a completely muggle notion."

She preceded the other woman out of the room, tripped over several things on the way over, and glanced over her shoulder at Sarah which made her narrowly avoid walking into the doorframe. "Witches and wizards don't really have religion. If it weren't for my dad, I wouldn't have even heard the word."

She giggled at Tonks as the other woman stuck her tongue out at her. She hadn't forgotten their conversation or the promises she'd made to keep secrets. It was next to impossible, however, to stay down for very long with someone so up! in the room. It felt so good to laugh, really laugh again too. Sarah started to feel almost happy for the first time in a very long time.

"Ummm," Sarah said thoughtfully. "I think certain shades of blue and probably orange clash with green. I think you'll be fine once you're covered in flour and sugar though."

Sarah looked a bit mortified that Tonks hadn't understood her quote. She clapped a hand over her mouth then let it fall away to say, "Oh no! It's just a line from Shakespeare. Richard III. I don't really think we're going to go hand in hand to hell over cookies..." She made a mental note not to go theatrical again but it seemed as she got swept up in the exuberance that was Tonks, she was reverting back to a place in her personality when she'd been precocious, enjoying plays and acting and generally being more outgoing than she had been, after her mom... after the labyrinth.

Recovering quickly so as not to make Tonks feel badly, if she might've for her reaction, Sarah followed her out the door and asked, "What is it like to be surrounded by so much magic all the time? Is it wonderful?"

For a second, she flicked her hair through several shades of blue. Once that was done, it was orange. "Well, what do you think?" Her hair finally settled on the bright pink that she favored, and she arched an eyebrow at Sarah. "It's okay, though, because orange makes me look like I'm about to be sick."

She turned to look at the girl as they stepped out of the room, vaguely alarmed that she seemed to be so worried. "Shakespeare... I've heard that name before." She was quite proud of herself. "He did that thing about the faeries, but missed the whole point of them..." She smiled encouragingly at the other girl, letting her know that she wasn't offended. Although she didn't even know why she would feel that way, but Sarah was clearly anxious.

"Being covered in sugar sounds brilliant!" She kept her gaze on the girl, which meant that she tripped over her own feet even more than usual. But this didn't alarm her in any way. In fact, she was so used to it she didn't even notice.

"Magic? Merlin, I dunno. It's just normal." She had never been around anything else, so didn't really have basis for comparison. "It feels rather odd to be in the muggle world, actually, and not be able to use magic. I sometimes wonder how you can get by without it, really. So many clever little machines you've made!" She spoke thoughtfully. "You see, wizards and witches do most things by magic, so we never had to make those ... automobiles or airplanes or whatever you call them."

"Yes, I guess he did have a play about faeries. A Midsummer Night's Dream. It's funny really. Men turning into donkeys and all." She smiled at Tonks, her expression unfortunately conveying that she was having a hard time not noticing the tripping and off-balancedness. "But you're right. He did miss the point. Faeries are nothing but pests like gnats. They destroy the garden and they bite if you catch them. Hoggle used to spray them with pesticide to rid them from the bushes at the labyrinth gates."

Sarah fell back a little, allowing Tonks the lead. She and Jareth had never finished their tour together so she wasn't exactly sure where the kitchens were in this place.

"It sounds like you have the life of Riley, Tonks. It must be so nice to be able to use magic for everything. I can see why you'd be out of your element in a muggle world without being able to use magic. We do sort of... plod along in the difficulties. What's it like catching dark wizards?"

Tonks shrugged, the smile on her own lips acknowledging that acknowledgement of her clumsiness. She was comfortable with it, as she'd better be after being like this her entire life. She didn't say anything about it, just shared a moment of silent amusement with the girl.

"How would you know about faeries?" She could have sounded scornful, and indeed, many of her relatives would have, but she merely sounded interested. "Most muiggles haven't even seen a faerie. Did one bite you? Did your hand swell up? Some are poisonous."

She glanced back to talk to Sarah, which of course led to more near collisions and falls. But she just kept on walking. "I dunno. Sometimes I think muggles are lucky. In some ways, wizard culture is the same as it was a thousand years ago." She grinned brightly, though, at the mention of her work.

"Oh, Sarah, you have no idea. It's incredible." Her eyes sparkled with delight. "Instead of just waiting around for bad guys to attack your family, you take them out first. It's dangerous, but worth it completely." She led the way through the hallways of the main building.

Sarah wondered if Tonks was more graceful when in her magical world but she wasn't going to ask. She still thought it might be very rude to point out that she noticed it even if the other woman had caught her unfortunate expression.

"Well, I don't know what they look like in your world, but they were very sweet-looking. Like little blonde children with wings. But they apparently are like locust or something and they bite. Yes, one bit me but it was only like being bit by a bug. I left them alone after that."

She stumbled on her own feet then and put out a hand to steady herself against the wall with a sudden burst of laughter. "What was in that ice cream, Tonks?"

Regaining her balance she commented dryly, "Sounds a lot more effective than human law enforcement. The bad guys have all of the rights and the victims have little to protect them until after they've actually been victimized. How did you get into that job? I mean, what made you want to hunt dark wizards?"

Tonks considered. "Yeah, some of them do look like that..." She wished that she knew more about it, really. She tended to stay away from the mischievious creatures, and had only studied what she needed to about them. So she really couldn't elaborate more than she already had.

She turned around and raised an eyebrow at the girl. It might be normal for Tonks to stumble around, but she got the idea that it wasn't for Sarah. "Maybe it's contagious?" She tilted her head to the side. "You only ate the chocolate ice cream, right? Not the one that changes flavors? Because that one might have been alchohol flavored and gotten you drunk."

She waited for Sarah to right herself, and thought about what she had said. "I guess it's because we have potions to make people tell the truth. So if we catch someone we think is a bad guy, we slip some of that to him, and they spill everything. Makes it easier to sort out the good guys from the bad, and makes for less mistakes."

Not all mistakes, though. She remembered her cousin, Sirius, and how everyone had assumed that he'd betrayed his friends Lily and James. But that was fairly painful, and she pushed it away. "It was while I was in school, actually. An Auror noticed me, and thought I'd be good at the job." She smiled fondly while thinking of Mad-Eye Moody. "I miss him. But... what about you, Sarah? What do you do?" She'd monopolized the conversation long enough, she figured.

"Yeah I only had the chocolate. But um, well, to be honest the other day when I got really nervous, rum was suddenly in my coffee. I hope I didn't do that again with the ice cream." She wasn't sure she should really bring that up, just like a good amount of other things that seemed too personal to tell anyone. So she dropped it quickly and smiled as sunnily as she could manage and started walking again.

"Oh, we have truth serum too but it's not really legal in most interrogation settings. Someone has to do something pretty bad I think. Something that threatens the country's safety. Or at least that's the way they make it look in movies. I like the magic world way better though. What an honor to be singled out like that!"

Suddenly it seemed so quiet in the hallways that she wondered where everyone else was. She bit her lip and the unruly strands of hair fell from behind her ear across her face. "Me? Well, I haven't really been able to do much. Um..."

Tonks couldn't hide her interest when Sarah told her that, and she didn't even try. "It's bloody strange, just when I think I'm getting used to this place something else happens. Now it can change our food into other food? That could be dangerous. What if..." But she eyed Sarah before continuing that path, deciding that the young woman didn't need to add Tonks' worries onto her own.

So instead, she just kept walking along with Sarah, stopping when they got to a large set of double doors. She pushed them open, gesturing for the younger girl to precede her in. "Really? I didn't know muggles had that sort of thing..." She frowned, slightly disturbed by that idea for some reason. But she didn't think about it very long, because there was more interesting conversation going on.

"It was a huge honor, I know. Moody is the best Auror ever." She had a bit of a hero worship thing for her mentor, though she didn't usually share that with him. It would just embarass him. "Well, did you finish school? How old are you?" She chattered on, not realizing that she was maybe being a tiny bit nosy.

"Oh, uh, I wouldn't worry about that, Tonks. I think it must've been something I wanted subconsciously. Like my stupid room..." Sarah said as reassuringly and neutrally as she could. Truth be told, there was nothing scary about this planet except for the way it had such a direct line into her subconscious. Something she knew was a plane of nightmarish landscapes and claustrophobic pitfalls all meant to punish herself. But that was something she would never tell anyone about.

"Thank you," Sarah said as Tonks pushed the double doors open and she walked in past them, glancing over her shoulder at the other woman, feeling a little unsure. "Yeah, humans have found all sorts of ways to be horrible to each other. Most of them are outlawed but there are some people who still act in spite of the law."

Sarah felt a sense of pride for her new friend's accomplishment filter through her for a moment. Then she turned around in a circle, looking around the room they were in with an expression of complete awe. Distractedly she answered, "Yes, I finished school. Barely. I'm 18... How old are you?"

Tonks just shrugged slightly and kept smiling. To be honest, she didn't fully understand why someone would subconsciously make their room into a memory of a bad time, or their drink into something alchoholic. But it didn't bother her particularly, because she figured that it would all work out for Sarah in the end. That was just the sort of optimistic person she was. And, of course, she would do her best to make sure the brunette girl got there.

"Yeah, no prob..." She walked into the kitchen, glancing around at the beautiful kitchenware. She'd never been all that domestic, but she was pretty sure that someone who was would be blissful right about now. "Merlin... Mirage doesn't do things by halves, does it?" Everything they could need to make about half a million chocolate chip cookies was already out and waiting, and the witch whistled softly to herself.

"Oh... wizards do that to each other, too. I think it's a human thing, not just something muggles do." She frowned thoughtfully. "The Death Eaters are like that, doing things that are outlawed. But they don't much care, they do them anyway." She shrugged with one shoulder. "Human nature." She took out her wand and some flour poured out into a bowl, directed by her magic. "Oh, you don't look that young... I'm 24."

"And of course, he has the matching mittens, bright pink and frilly, to go with his apron..." The whole thing was hysterical. She was starting to wonder if she'd ever be able to stop giggling.

She was glad that her joke had translated. There was so much difference between the muggle world and the wizard one. She'd heard that one from her father, though, but she'd hoped she wasn't dating herself on it. Apparently, Sarah found it funny, and that was good enough for Tonks.

"It's been awhile for me, too." Gradually, she got herself under control, wiping her streaming eyes free of the tears that had been rolling down her cheeks. She pushed herself up off the floor and looked around. "Merlin, look at this mess..."

"M-matching mittens?!" That gained Tonks another peal of laughter from Sarah who was almost hoarse and eventually had to resort to snorts to express her amusement. She held her stomach as the laughter bordered on making her nauseous.

Sarah stood shakily to her feet after Tonks, leaning on the counter with one hand as she did and sliding back down at least twice in the eggs and flour cementing on the floor beneath her feet. "We don't have to clean this up ourselves do we?" she asked with wide, very amused eyes. "We covered everything didn't we?"

Finally on her feet, Sarah picked gummy mixture from her hair which was now a disheveled mess around her shoulders. She sneezed and almost started giggling again but held on to her cool with a huge, stupid smile instead. "Makeover is a must now."

If she kept going, she was going to laugh again. Now, that wouldn't normally be a bad thing, but she'd laughed so hard that she actually felt sort of faint and light-headed. It wasn't impossible to think that she might pass out if she giggled anymore, so she took deep, calming breaths.

After awhile, she felt like she could move again. She was shaky, but she managed to get to her feet. Although, like Sarah, she slipped several times. But finally, she was standing and looking at the havoc they had made in the formerly tidy room.

"Merlin..." She turned to her friend, smiling brightly at her. "I have a new plan. We should get Mirage to make us cookies, and we should go have a shower."
