Well, not what I was expecting when I began the story. (Which was why you began it that way, I suppose. :-)

Great use of canon. I like this epilogue.

Dark, intense, wow. I normally shy away from chan--I somehow skipped that warning--but this was a very good read. The relationship with Lily was so very, very well done.

Very well written! I think I need to be more alert to figure out the ending >_< but the characterization was great and the angst was unremitting. In that and its length, this is like a tribute to the great angsty Snarry chans of earlier years.

This story is a seamless fusion of canon and new elements, and is elegantly told. You've painted a perfect picture of Snape as a man who is utterly, resolutely committed to doing whatever he must, no matter the cost to himself. And you show, in all it's painful detail, exactly what it does cost him. This line:

Sentimentality might've otherwise been useless to him, but in his past, he found purpose for the present.

Just so much yes.

Lovely that in the end, he's managed to gain back at least a portion of what he's lost -- and perhaps has even more to gain still. A much more satisfying epilogue for him, I'd say.

Also, I have to make note of this little stroke of dark comedic genius:

"What a lovely night! The skies are so clear I can see nearly all the way down to the school grounds. It'd be quite a fall from up here."

Indeed. Your characterization of Albus is perfect.

Oh, this was excellent. You write angst brilliantly - it's there, it's so real and so very painful, but yet it is subtle and feels more like an undercurrent to the story, rather than dominating it. (If that makes sense? I'm very tired!)

Wonderful.

Wow. That shook me up a bit and left me feeling a little gutted. The mix of canon and your ideas melded so beautifully together. Exquisitely, even. This isn't what one usually goes for during the holiday season, but it leaves me in awe. Your characterization is spot-on. It's very well written. Your epilogue leaves me wanting more. *ashamed*

Thank you, secret Santa.

I loved all the fascinating magical elements you introduced and how they fit perfectly into the canonical parts of your fic. Oh, the angst! But so well done. ;)

The detail of how the memories are captured, categorized, numbered...and how they're used (as well as the punishment for doing so)...was my favourite part.

Thank you very much for sharing this with us.

Wow, this is such an intense read. Canon is weaved so wonderfully through the events that take place in this fic.

And I'm really glad it ended on such a positive note. The angst was becoming a bit too much for my weak nature. :)

I love how you took canon facts and told a completely different story with them - this is such a believable account of things that might have happened. I love your Severus; how he's resigned himself to his fate and to do as he must, and how he is living through the present only with the help of the past. The built-up of the Snarry is so careful and slow and painful, too, just as it ought to be.

Intense and beautiful. Great job!

I adore fics that take us behind the scenes of canon and fill in the blanks and interesting, compelling and creative ways. And you've accomplished it so well! Great use of all points from book 7 and before, and I love how much more you added to Snape's struggle with Harry due to Voldemort's evil.

*applauds!*

God, I'm reeling. I feel sick and elated at the same time.

I think I actually would have liked it better without the epilogue, but it would have been so much more devastating. Still, it really moved me, really effected me emotionally.

Your writing is confident and flawless and, like everyone said, you seamlessly weave canon with your own story. It was so interesting to see those scenes from Snape's perspective.

Really wonderful. The most effecting fic I've read yet this season.

Oh. My. God. I'm just in awe of this story. Whoever you are, mystery Santa, you must know me and my tastes very, very well, because this is everything I could have wished for in a fic. Everything. Excellent plot, angsty twists and turns, a hopeful ending that leaves the bulk of its promise to the heart of the reader and characters with complicated motives.

Things that made me fall in love with this fic:

Severus' room. I love that he had to be in the right frame of mind to access it, and that he was never sure, day to day, if he would see it again the next time he tried to access it. I love the symbolism of it, too, which mirrors his character so well: the room, locked away with uncertain access, where he keeps his most precious memories, is just like the very private man we know from canon, who keeps his memories locked away safe until the very end.

Which brings me to another really amazing thing about this story -- its seamless joining with canon. These could be lost scenes, they're so tightly woven together with the canon story. In canon, Voldemort never recognized the love Snape still held for Lily, and that made him blind to Severus' disloyalty. It's these kinds of little puzzle pieces you've made that fit so well with canon, which make your story so rich and believable, and so very, very enjoyable. I couldn't take my eye off the page, except for one point, when I got out OotP so I could follow along, and fit the scenes in (yes, I was that excited about the story!).

I was also very impressed with your delineation of Snape and Lily's relationship. I especially liked the vignette where Lily is asking Snape again and again to talk about the Dementors. I think that really rings true; she feels something in her, the magic, maybe, that drives her to know more about her world that she doesn't know about, and I can see her being that headstrong, pestering Severus until he tells her what she wants to know. These scenes of his youth with Lily provided the perfect counterpart to his anguish at her loss, to his obsessive and unhealthy behaviors with his memories of her. They make us feel his losses even as he feels them. This was very well done.

Snape... wow. You've shown in painful detail what a horrible position Dumbledore's put him in. He's ripped in two, maybe ripped in four, even, and your storytelling ability has us bleeding and trying right along with him. *swoons*. To ride for so long that thin line between seeming to serve Voldemort and doing the right thing by Harry, and then the way you show him trying to cope, like the fracturing man he is... wow. I bled with him. And in the end, being forced to do what he would have liked to have done in different circumstances, to have to live with that lie and still he did it, just rings so true with canon Snape. *melts*

And Harry, oh God, poor soul, he leans in and takes what he wants, he finally gets Snape, and then -- after OMGHOTSEX -- Snape comes back to his rooms to find Harry amidst all the memories of Snape taking him, raping him... when Harry says "Take them...all of them. Last night..." Potter paused, his voice breaking. "I want to forget." And Snape, after giving him everything, to the cost of his safety, his position as a spy, his morality -- he gives Harry this, too. I was just devastated. I could feel Harry's hurt and I could feel Severus' heart tumble down, down, and I felt like I could cry at the tragedy of it all.

But then, the Epilogue (and can I just say I like that it was 20 years later?) :-) No lengthy explanations, just "anti-venon", and really, that's all it takes to explain it, doesn't it, and they have a chance to start afresh, with everything back safe in their minds. Just that chance for the tragedy to be repaired, was the perfect ending. Just perfect.

Mystery author, I can't wait to find out who you are so I can go read everything else you've written. What an amazing, amazing gift.

Thank you. *hugs*

I believe Veni has pretty much said everything on what I love about this story. Really, if JKR writes cross-gen slash, I'd have no problem believing this is a part of Book 5 that she wrote but somehow needed to cut out. Your Snape is written so well, his characterization is flawlessly consistent through all the canon/fanon switches. And Harry... I'm glad to know what happened 20 years later!

Very nice, mystery author :)

Wow. This was quite a trip. Interesting use of canon and some very touching and angsty speculations into what was between the lines and behind the scenes, not to mention some additional spice.

Well written and long, just the way I like fics!

I read this fic way earlier on in the exchange, but I had such a reaction it, I couldn't formulate words for a review. I'm still not sure I can.

I was looking forward to Deathly Hallows because I wanted to find out Snape's motivations. I just knew that after DH I would be able to go back to previous books and understand more what he was doing. You've done exactly that. You've infused my favorite Snape and Harry scenes and given them context. You've taken what JKR gave us in DH, but also added your own.

Snape's characterization renders me speachless. It's one of the most important aspects to me as a writer and reader, and you've thoroughly mastered it. One of the reasons why the rape works for me is how Snape behaves under the orders. I think it's something Voldemort would ahve expected Snape to do (especially given Voldemort knew Snape had something for Lily-although underestimated-it would have been a way to break Snape like Voldemort's treatment of Draco in HBP). Snape might've felt like he shouldn't do it, but at the end of the day, he might have had trouble not meeting a demand. There's something twisted and dark in Snape that would have done that. It's just so fitting.

The way Snape looks at life and organizes his memories is amazing. When he starts to create memories for Harry, too, I thought was such a subtle but powerful way of showing his outlook towards Harry as changing.

The ending was just so powerful, and as I was reading it, I was breaking -- but now, after giving it some time, I actually like the ending right before the epilogue as the ending. The other part of me that much prefers happy endings loves the epilogue you've created, too.

There's something about this fic that's so gut-wrenching and perfect, it also makes me uncomfortable. But, I think it's so uncomfortable because it hits so deeply, if that makes any sense.

OOH. I knew I had something else to say. Dumbledore. You've absolutely captured my post-DH view of Dumbledore.

Wonderful job.

I love this insight to Snape. It is so IC and gives him so much more depth. I like that the whole fic seem to expand on what happened in the books. Your use of canon here was fantastic. Snape is so focused on doing what he must that he gave up so much of himself. He seemed to be addicted to repeating those past experiences in order to keep himself going in the present. Harry's reaction to the memories of what Snape did to him was classic. And I like that you had him request that they all be removed. It gave them a chance for a new beginning in the epilogue. And such a wonderful epilogue it was! You have wonderful writing skills and the enviable ability to really see into your characters. Such a great revisit to Occlumency fics of past with the added information of the end. A truly great fic!
