Nate had been watching over Harlow for the last few weeks since she'd gotten home from the hospital. Granted, she had no idea he was watching over her because he was in his dog form. Occasionally he would be able to sneak away to give Zeke updates on how she was doing. He knew that he was only a shifter and could only do so much to protect her, but Nate was willing to do whatever it took to watch over his friend.
It was getting close to that time for him though and he could feel it coming on. Soon he would need someone to replace him, be it in animal form or human. At least for a week. But that was something he could worry about later. For the moment he simply curled up against Harlow and did his best to stay awake as she slept.
At some point in the night, Nate had fallen asleep himself. Normally he was able to stay in his animal form when asleep but when it was closer to his time of the month, it was harder to keep shape. Mainly because he kept having these vivid dreams that left him feeling needy. He hadn't even realized he'd shifted back to his human form while asleep, he simply rolled over and wrapped an arm around Harlow, pulling her in close to him. Her warmth was comforting and he nuzzled his face in against her neck, taking in a deep breath of her comforting scent.
It had needless to say been a rough few weeks for Harlow. Nightmares happened often in her mind just replaying what she could remember of the events. The cold dead stare of the guy who refused to let her pass. She’d side step, but he would move right along with her. No response to her words. Not a single thing until shortly after he cut her neck with something in his mouth. She vaguely remembered hearing he had spoken a single word, but she couldn’t decipher what on earth it was; as she was just too far gone in that moment to have heard anything right. She just knew the large - well what she thought was an animal turned out to be Zeke had stopped him from killing her. Still, the nightmares played on often.
That night however she had successfully slept nightmare free. It helped that she had taken a little extra on the pain medication to really knock herself out. Perhaps it was how she didn’t feel the shift of her bed when the lovable pup she had named Mister Fluffers had actually changed into her friend Nate beside her in the night.
By morning her body was actually relaxed at first when he nuzzled up against her. At first there was no reaction, she slept soundly even as she had initially been pulled back against him. It wasn’t too long though before her mind began to stir again. Her body slightly adjusted in his arm and against him as her senses were slowly waking with her. It was that feeling of him up against her though that sparked more alertness. Her mind recalled she hadn’t gone to bed with anyone other than Mister Fluffers the night before. Harlow’s eyes shot open as a scream escaped her before she could contain herself. Throwing his arm off from around her and hopping right out of bed in the oversized David Bowie t-shirt she had slept in. “Who-” she began to yell, but found herself confused seeing her naked friend on her bed. “Nate?” she questioned feeling dumbfounded. “What the hell are you doing in my bed? How did you even get in here?”
One moment Nate was engulfed in a warm fluffy cloud of good feelings and Harlow's body against his. The next, a scream had his eyes shooting open and him pouncing to his feet, arms up, ready to fight whatever it was that was there. "What?! Where?!" His gaze frantically moved around the room, trying to find the threat while he was still working on the whole waking up fully part. Then it dawned on him. He was not in his dog form. He was human and Harlow was actually human and… well… This was awkward.
Slowly, Nate's hands moved down towards his sides and he relaxed a little, realizing there was no actual threat. "First off… Never wake me up screaming again. Second…" How the hell was he supposed to explain all of this?! He had no fucking idea. He had just been woken up in the worst way possible and there was no coffee and… well fuck it.
"Sorry…" He murmured as his eyes moved up to Harlow's. There was really no other way that he could think of to explain things. Other than to show her. So taking in a deep breath, Nate changed his form. One moment he was human, standing before her. The next, he was a dog that hopped up on the bed and lowered itself into submission before slowly belly crawling over to her side of the bed and then looking up at her with those crystal blue eyes. A knowledge behind those eyes that she likely had never even noticed before, trying to convey to her that he was harmless.
Her eyes had just stared at her friend who was naked on her bed. It didn’t make any sense, how did he even get in? Harlow knew she took a little extra on her pain medication the night prior, but surely it had just helped her relax all the more to sleep and not put her in some weird trance where she’s blindly opening her door. Her mind was racing with the ‘how in the hell…’ type questions when he started to speak with his notion of never waking him up screaming again. Her expression was a little dumbfounded. She wasn’t offended he was there, she was just confused as to how he got in there.
Then he murmured his apology and Harlow again was trying to form words, asking him how he got in. Before her brain and mouth connected for another round of questions though, she watched her friend turn into the sweet dog that has been hanging out with her these past few weeks. For a moment she just started, lips parted in disbelief and shock.
Slowly her lips began to motion together, words again were trying to form. Unfortunately simultaneously she was starting to feel weaker and weaker on the inside. “Mi-mi-mi-mister Fluffers?” she stammered out the question, “Y-you’re-you’re a-a dog?” She wasn’t afraid of him, she was in shock of the moment. She’d never known anything like this to exist outside of fictional movies and books. Watching her friend turn from person to dog was a little much to start her day on and perhaps that was evident with the way her body wavered as her eyes seemed to roll back into her head before collapsing to her bedroom floor. Fortunately avoiding hitting her head against anything on the way down.
For a moment, Nate thought that Harlow was taking all of it quite well. Even if she was stammering a little. He had even managed to raise his head and give her a goofy dog grin with his tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth when she referred to him as Mister Fluffers. Which had amused him from day one. Just as he was about to change forms again and commend her on how well she was taking things, he watched her eyes roll back and she dropped to the floor like a sack of potatoes.
Welp. Could have been worse. He thought before shifting back into his human form and moving next to Harlow on the floor to pick her up and put her in her bed. Nate sat down on the side of her bed once he got her situated. "Harlow?" His hand reached out and stroked her hair before coming to cup her cheek. "Come on Harlow… Wake up… Don't make me go get some bacon to wave under your nose…" he teased.
One moment she had stood there in her oversized shirt watching her friend change from human to dog, the same dog she had been spending so much time with. The next moment she found herself feeling the comforts of her bed beneath her body. Her eyes remained closed as her mind slowly started to pull focus while she regained consciousness. “What about bacon?” she asked in a whispered voice that had been partially mumbled before her eyes fluttered their way open. Harlow looked at Nate, letting her eyes focus on his face for a moment.
“Nate?” she questioned before a slight swallow. “Did you really just turn into Mister Fluffers?” For a brief moment she wasn’t even sure if she actually saw what she did before she had fainted. Maybe she was just more stressed than she realized and what happened in Eureka just seemed to be the catalyst to push her over the edge. In a way she was worried he would say he hadn't and she’d need to sign up for a padded room. A sure sign her mind had just completely snapped if she was now going to imagine her friends turning into animals.
He chuckled a little at her inquiry about bacon, that let him know that she was alright more than anything else. His hand moved forward, brushing her hair from her face as he smiled down at her. The time had come to clue her in on the supernatural world, whether he wanted to or not. Though honestly, he thought it would be more helpful to her than anything. Especially given what was known now.
"Yes. I turned into Mister Fluffers… which… I find amusing that you chose that as my name." He grinned again before turning serious. "We have a lot to talk about, Harlow. There are things in this world that you don't know about. Things that you need to be made aware of. I am one of those things." He paused for a moment and took a deep breath, having never really had to explain this before. "I am a shifter. Mister Fluffers, is my animal form." Best just to cut to the chase, he thought.
Harlow didn’t flinch when he touched her, he was her friend. Someone who had become a trusted friend at that. Before she could comment on naming him Mister Fluffers though, he turned serious and started opening up. It was strange as he continued to speak, talking of how she needed to be aware of things she didn’t know about. “A shifter…” she quietly repeated as he spoke of how the dog she’d been caring for over the past few weeks was indeed her friend before her now.
“So… you’re a shifter?” the words came out slowly as she had laid there on the bed looking up at him. “Do you change into anything else? How-how does that even work? How is that even possible?” Her mind seemed to focus on him and race with questions at the same time. It also took note of things she’d done around him so freely in his dog form. Not to mention the things she had done for him beyond feeding and playing with him. “I…” she trailed a moment and paused, her eyes focused on him. “Am I dreaming? Is this real right now?”
Nate was glad to find that Harlow wasn't freaking out entirely. So that was good. She seemed to be taking the news quite well for a human who'd never known there was anything else out there that wasn't human. Well… entirely human anyway.
When asked about how shifting worked, Nate kind of shrugged a little. He wasn't entirely sure of it himself, it just was what it was to him. He'd been born that way and it was all he knew, which he explained as much to her as he assured her that she was not dreaming. It was in fact very real.
He sat there with Harlow for a while, explaining as best he could about the life he knew. Nate assured her that a dog was his one and only form. That he didn't know any shifters that had more than one form. He was pretty sure that wasn't possible. But he did explain that not all that shifted were shifters. Which led him down the werewolf path and then the strigele path. Which was what had attacked her.
After explaining that bit, Nate grew very serious and took her hand. She had no idea what she was and he was about to break it down for her. He explained that she was a nephilim. That her blood was like poison to the striegele, which could very easily hurt her as much as it helped her. They would not be able to feed off of her, not for long anyway, before realizing that it was poison. But in the same regard, if many found out what she was, they may want to kill her because of it. Which was why Zeke never left the hospital and why Nate hadn't left her side since she'd gotten home from the hospital.
Truth be told, the woman didn’t know how to react to any of it. One moment she’s living life, sort of, believing she and all around her are ordinary humans. The next moment she’s waking up to find out her friend is actually Mister Fluffers; the name she had so affectionately donned on him in his dog form while staying with her, or as she now learned, watching over her.
Harlow remained quiet as she listened to Nate as he explained and answered the questions she had to the best of his ability. Her mind just sort of felt blown as he talked about that night she was attacked. It was hard to believe, but it actually made more sense to her than what she thought happened. The guy didn’t have razors in his mouth, he had teeth.
She lost so much blood, because he was drinking it. She had actually seen a large animal, it was Zeke who must have changed when he intervened and saved her. The cuts on her neck were from the teeth that ripped her flesh as the Strigele had pulled off her when they spoke the one word she couldn’t recall. A word she now guessed was this nephilim term her friend said she was. Something that saved her, but also put her in danger.
It was a lot to process for Harlow. She wasn’t anything special, she couldn’t be. There were a few moments as Nate had spoken where she felt a little light headed, like she could have passed out again. Fortunately she was able to push aside the feelings when they arose and listened to him. She clearly needed to know about all of this. About how certain things weren’t just in the movies, they were in real life, even if they had a different label on them. It felt like so much more than it being that simple though and she really wasn’t sure what to make of it all. Harlow just did her best to listen and take it in as he shared with her.
