Fic: Quiet
Random Sephiroth snippet. Enjoy.
"You will be perfect someday."
Those are really the words Sephiroth associated most with his father. The man, a mage of some skill and infamy, had always said them to him as he had trained Sephiroth in the powers of magic. His mother had just hummed and agreed, but it was well known that something had happened after Sephiroth's birth that had made her...simple.
Not that Sephiroth really knew or cared that much about either of them. Something about the way his father looked at him, as if searching for something, always made him wary of the man. Always had been. It had been a relief to finally be old enough to leave home and not be dragged back by his father's connections to court. How the man had gotten those, he had no need or desire to know.
Sometimes, though, Sephiroth wondered who the rest of his family was. He looked nothing like either of his parents. His father had black hair and eyes so dark a shade they looked black as well, and Mother had brown hair and deep green eyes. It was a mystery where he had gotten his hair and eyes, and there had been a few rumors when he had been younger that his mother must have had an affair with a demon to get those colors. But Father never said anything, and just told Sephiroth that his was his child, no matter what the other fools said.
When Sephiroth turned ten, he knew he wasn't normal. Even compared to other mage-gifted, he knew he was odd.
He heard voices.
Mostly just one. A woman's voice, quiet and sleepy, as if she didn't really know he was there and was just mumbling in her sleep.
Sephiroth never told anyone else after he mentioned it to his father and the man had quizzed him a strangely intent look on his face, hands tight on Sephiroth's arms. The man had asked him questions that he hadn't been able to answer, and then, afterwards, been muttering things about magical essences and contamination.
Sephiroth had never spoke of the voices again. Not even to Cloud, who he had felt an ease with unmatched by anyone else.
He wondered, with his father's constant talk of essences and magical signatures and contaminations and, most importantly, Jenova, just what his father's research had been about. Why did Shinra support him so much?
But asking would require him to see the man again, and that was something he refused to do. Even though the dreams and the voices got worse at times, he refused to put himself in his father's power again, especially now that his mother had died.
Now, when the voices grew, he had found a much more simple and enjoyable solution. He simply crawled into Cloud's bed and laid against the older man, and the murmurs in his mind quieted to nothing.
Maybe one day he would ask Cloud, ask and see if he had heard of others who had voices like his, who had come to Cloud to have them calmed. Maybe. For now, he was content to lay against the man and enjoy the quiet.
