Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
The Cyberpunk Meme

Welcome to the future. Unfortunately, it's not all it's cracked up to be. The very definition of the term cyberpunk is "high tech, low life." These are worlds defined by poverty or absolute control, where the net is your only escape from the troubles of the world. Cyborgs, metahumans, AIs, corporations with undisputed power are what's being served out here. Do you have what it takes to survive?

To get started, you can create a scenario for yourself, or merely go to the Random Number Generator and choose a pre-made one for you and your partner.

1. You or your partner (or both) is a hacker who just stumbled across the biggest information leak of your lives. This could make or break the two of you, if you know how to handle the consequences of your following action.

2. In the real world, people wouldn't waste their spit on scum like you. But in the net? You're a god, peddling information and resources better than Wal-Mart. Just be careful who you talk to. Not everyone thinks what you do is a good thing.

3. The corporations, the government, the gangs, the machines. It doesn't matter who it is, but you're tired of their interference in your life. Are the two of you ready to take them on?

4. You're the king or queen of your private enterprise. You have it all: A private army, AIs capable of placating the masses, connections even better than the government, and a demeanor that could charm Satan himself. However, there's still that little nuisance known as the underdog, and they're knocking at your door.

5. You just got that newest drug shipment in, and it promises to be the biggest trip in your life. It promises to make you stronger, faster, smarter, and sexier, all in one hit. The only thing left is to try it.

6. People are disappearing, and no one seems to notice or care, except you and your partner. The only thing? They're also your worst enemy.

7. You've just been kidnapped, and unfortunately, your partner's the kidnapper. What's their motive? Can you escape?

Anything I forgot, go ahead and play it. Make your own world, your own personalities. Have fun!

His brows both arched, just a little, "Interesting." He gave a shrug then, "We'll have to see how this goes."

He can see it's an IV solution so Charles leans forward, working off his jacket and setting it aside to roll up a sleeve. "Has it ever not worked on anyone? This somnicin?"

He shook his head, "Not that I've heard of. I know some people have an averse reaction to the government issue stuff, but that's not the Somnacin itself so much as what they add to it. It can be addictive in a very small percentage of subjects, and there are certain other things they add to it to cut down on those properties."

He shook his head, "Really it's easier to fight the addiction if it happens than to risk the side effects of the other additives just in case." Another small smile, brow arching as he unspooled one of the lines, "You ready for this?" He asked, having set the timers carefully, they'd both go under at the same time, but Arthur would wake a few moments before Charles, long enough, if he needed it, to make a getaway in the case of some sort of trap. It had happened before.

(ooc: so this works a little differently than Inception-canon. It's a bit more like the Matrix readyroom, building from the ground up. Cooperative shared dream-building, no risk of Limbo, no need for a kick. The timer runs out, everyone wakes up, though some people might still want to cling to the dream-state, as with any drug.)

[ooc: ok, good to know. ty :)]

Hm, becoming addicted to a possibly dangerous substance the government invented. Not exactly a good thing. But Charles does a light scan of Arthur's mind and finds that he has indeed done this many times without the issue of addiction.

"Quite ready," Charles says, giving over his arm and leaning back a bit in his wheelchair.

He nodded once, settling into his own chair, sure, a lot could happen to a sleeping body in five minutes, or four minutes and fifty seconds, in his case, but Charles seemed simply curious and nothing more. He could work with that.

They 'woke up' in a vast-seeming, empty space, "Here we are." He said, turning to Charles, "Most of us call this 'base camp', empty subconscious space."

For someone who's never dreamshared before, Charles is strangely comfortable in this environment. And standing on his own two feet as he strolls around Arthur in the empty space. "Like a blank slate."

Arthur nodded, "Exactly like that, actually. Only one where anything is possible." He made a sweeping gesture with one arm, leaving a trail of jewel-toned butterflies skittering off in the wake of the movement, their wings tinkling softly like seashell windchimes. Vanishing completely once they'd passed out of peripheral vision.

"Fascinating..." he watches the butterflies moving up and away. "It doesn't feel like a dream." Or more correctly, it doesn't feel like he's asleep.

"It's not meant to." He said, "Well, not with the mix we're using, you're supposed to be aware of what's going on."

Grass starts to grow under their feet, a tree sprouting in a matter of seconds as Charles does his own playing with the scenery. "You could run any number of simulations in here." It did beg the question though, "And if anything bad happens to you in here? Such as a nightmare?"

Arthur nodded, just watching the other man build, he'd taken to it more easily than most, "Nightmares don't usually get in, though there are some people who make Somnacin mixes that are solely for nightmares. It's not ... not really good business, though."

"Generally? Nothing, aside from waking up to an adrenaline dump, your body reacts the same to being scared in a nightmare as it does in real life. Heart rate increases, breathing too."

"So...one just has to ride it out till the medication stops?"

Buildings were being added around the edges, mostly memories from Oxford campus.

He nodded, "Exactly, or go with it. Lucid dreaming is lucid for a reason, everyone can take control of all but the most deeply-rooted nightmares, with the right sort of incentive. I've turned a few around with the right suggestions to the dreamer."

That got another quick smile out of Arthur, nodding, "Exactly. Always good to have a spotter, someone who's been there and done that before." A nod towards the buildings then, "Oxford?"

Charles grins, looking up at the formed buildings. "Indeed, my alma mater." There really didn't seem to be a limit of what you could create in here.

"I got my degree there...also spent quite a bit of time in the pubs nearby." He chuckles at the memory.

He puts two fingers to his temple, feeling around with his ability. The only minds available being his own and Arthur's. It's a little more fluid, their thoughts, while being asleep.

He gives a small memory of Arthur's a pull out into the open, both of them suddenly in the middle of a room where Arthur's hooking up his friends to the Pasiv and getting them ready to go under. "Hm...interesting." And a little surreal.
