The drive back to Blaine's house wasn't especially long -- half an hour with morning traffic -- but it was enough for him to work himself into a spectacular set of nerves.
Maybe he'd misunderstood. Maybe Kurt hadn't meant what he'd thought he meant. Blaine was slowly accepting the fact that he wasn't as good at picking up on subtleties as he'd like to be, and he was terrified of misinterpreting and messing everything up again. He'd spent the last two days feeling like there was a fist closed around his chest, and focusing so single-mindedly on the musical that it was probably a little obsessive to anyone who'd been paying attention. He'd already let Kurt down, he couldn't bear to fail Rachel, and Artie, and the Warblers, and -- everyone.
Kurt didn't hate him. Just the smile on his face had made it easier to breathe again, and the knot in Blaine's stomach loosen for the first time since Wednesday night. He'd disappointed so many people -- his parents, his sister, himself -- but disappointing Kurt had knocked the breath out of him more than anything. He wanted Kurt to be proud of him.
He needed to make sure they were on the same page, this time, at the very least. Kurt had opted to follow him back to his house in his own car, and having that much distance just for a short time was enough to make Blaine nervous, and determined not to screw up spectacularly again. If Kurt wasn't ready, nothing would happen -- simple as that.
By the time Blaine unlocked his front door and pushed it open, he felt calmer than he had in days, even with the thready hum of nerves.
