Spider-Man was perched on a ledge just below the roof of a department store, doing his best impression of the gargoyle three feet to his left, when he heard the gunshot coming from two blocks away.
"Aaaaand we're off!" He was in the air before firing the webshooters, needing to lose just a little bit of height coming down from the taller store. The surrounding boutiques were mostly new installations, complying to some neighborhood code of conduct that prescribed they all be a certain size, color, and completely devoid of the architectural genius that had made New York City such a grand old lady in previous years.
He arrived just in time to see the power all go out, leaving some suspiciously shadowy figures skulking awkwardly around the jewelry store. "Must be a Midnight Madness sale," he muttered. Landing silently on the roof, he looked around to see how the burglars had gotten in.
There was an air vent on the roof that appeared to have been jimmied open and wiggled through - not the way most would have chosen to go willingly unless they had maps, diagrams, knew how much weight the vents could hold, and how to stop any and all security systems along the way. That meant only one thing to Spidey. "Damn." This was not going to be his night, was it?
Rather than follow that same path, Spidey looked over the edge of the roof at the face of the building. There was only one big front facing window with a southerly view. The moon just now in the west, so there wasn't that much light to see inside by. If he went in after the thieves, his eyesight would be no better off than theirs were.
Time to shed some light on the situation. Going around to the west side of the building, Spidey hopped between it and the next until he was positioned right, then with a breath, and a muttered, "Here goes nothing," he sent himself crashing feet first through the west facing window, covered inside the shop by shelves of merchandise and thick paper.
"A surprise party? For me? You guys shouldn't have!
"No, really, you shouldn't have - today's not my birthday day!"
